I bought a $110 snare drum head made of kangaroo hide. Let's see how it sounds!

I found a drum head that cost $110! (with shipping) I have to say I didn't know how this would compare to a regular Remo Ambassador, but I was super surprised by the sound of this drum head! On top of that, this head from Kentville Drums is made from kangaroo hide which is very bizarre to me (these are all ethically sourced). This is should replicate the sound of old vintage calf skin heads. So let's throw this on my Pearl Sensitone and see what it sounds like!

Nice review DBO, thanks for taking the time to try out the product and record and edit everything so nicely. Just to allay any concerns from viewers about Kangaroo welfare - All the kangaroo hides we use are the by-product of a government controlled culling program which assists in keeping Kangaroo populations at healthy and sustainable levels across Eastern Australia. This program also helps to protect other native animals whose habitats are impacted by uncontrolled spikes in kangaroo numbers. Every part of a culled kangaroo is used and they are only killed by licensed hunters who have to follow a strict code of conduct and whose quotas are carefully monitored. If it wasn't a by-product, we absolutely wouldn't be using it. Our heads are not cheap, and we appreciate you buying one and putting some consideration into such a well thought out review. The price comes down to each one being entirely handmade in Australia from relatively expensive materials. That said, Kentville Heads fall in the mid-range bracket when it comes to rawhide heads on the market globally. They are definitely not for everyone though! As for the rims (or flesh hoops) they are made from solid aluminium. Just one of many facts about our processes and commitment to quality outlined in our wordy brochure ;)

You are supposed to moisten the edge of skin heads, and stretch them on the drum overnight before tuning and playing. This is why the head couldn't keep tension or tuning.

one of the main differences between real hide heads and plastic heads is real hide heads slacken off in cold temperatures and tighten up in warm temperatures, jsut like real skin does :) its why in some vintage drums you seen wired-in bulbs/heat lamps to keep tension on the heads and why they used to slacken them off in the old days so they didnt split during temperature changes :) if you put it back on a drum, use something warm to heat it up like a hairdryer on low heat for a few seconds, or rub your hand over it for a minute or so, and you'll notice a pitch change/tension change in the head :)

I think it comes down to personal preference and budget... The two drum heads definitely sound very different, but I think it's really hard to make a case that one is objectively better than the other. I can say that for my personal taste, for all three tunings, I preferred the sound of the remo.

Reminds me of the old calfskin heads we had before plastic really took hold. They had a great, warm resonant tone, but were severely affected by the weather. A little humidity and the heads loosened, dry spells and they tightened. I'm assuming the kangaroo heads are the same.

to be honest, this didn't seam very fair, you got yourself a Ferrari drove in a bumpy road and said that is the same then driving a corola, those kangaroo heads were made to use as replacement for calf skin, manly used for playing with brushes, or on a old snare with very loose wires, and vast dynamics, thats where it shines, if you are hitting rim shot on everything, yeah for sure its not worth it, if you still have that 1920 kit put this both heads on them and tell me if its not worth it.

I feel like this is just a wrong type of comparison, you are comparing a natural head to a plastic head and yes it is true that natural heads give you more of a warmer sound or vintage kind of sound but the main reason why people swap over to natural heads is also because natural heads tend to last longer as compared to plastic heads when taken care of. And because natural heads are, well... natural, they tend to be more temperamental in terms of tuning which could also play a part as to the tuning “problems” people face.
@randytan5471

A better drum head to compare the kentville head with would be the remo skyntone or any calf head from calfo or stern tanning!

Imagine just chillin' with your boys/girls in the outback, sipping on a beer, occasionally chewing some grass, hopping around in the sun, then all of a sudden some low-life human appears, shoots you in the head, tears off your skin and sends it across the globe to be beaten with a pair of drumsticks. When you could just use some kind of film with a metal ring as is conventional (though I'm unaware of a more environmentally friendly method), this seems rather barbaric, don't you think? Not a practice I would support financially, personally.

I guess the sound is a matter of preference. The question is, do you want to hit a kangaroo? 🤨 EDIT: ok, listened with proper headphones now and I have to say, I don't like the kangaroo in high, but then again, might just be that the sound isn't fitting the rest of the kit. Would be interesting to hear a full set of kangaroo in action. (🤦 That sounded just wrong now) SPOILER ALERT Thank God that 'in-your-face-delivery' isn't standard...
