it appears that one must give up some of their personal rights of privacy and freedoms in exchange for low income housing...this is similar to when you become employed at a company and are also forced to give up many rights in order to earn a living...this is both humiliating, degrading and feels like manipulation...

What I learned from low income housing, don't associate with neighbors unless you want to live their problems or are willing and have means to give.

Well love I'm glad you made moves. I grew up in the hood or low income. Real low income. I promised myself I would never live like that again or have my kids live like that. One reason why I went to the marine corp. I own my house well I use to I gave it to the mother of my daughter I plan on buying another house here in Tampa now. Last time I.was paying rent I was paying 1,350 a month for a condo. I bought my first house it was 4 bedrooms 3.5 baths mortgage was 600 a month. I pray everything goes great for you. Be careful I know some low income places be pretty violent.

My place was bought by an organization that runs low income apartments. You have to show a lot of documentation. Too nosy and intrusive for me. If I made any money on the side, it could get me thrown out. Too many rules as you described. So, I left. Everything you pointed out, is what I went through. Don't get me started on pet deposits and pet rent! Big Brother under the guise of low income housing! Not for me!

Frenchi J- that is so invasive! My family lived in government housing in Florida 20 years ago and right after we moved in I was home alone and using the restroom. I left the door open to the hall since nobody was home. Suddenly I heard someone pound on the door and open it like 5 seconds later. Boy was I getting my underwear up and my skirt down super fast. I ran into the living room and the manager and maintenance man were in my living room. I don't know who was more freaked out, them or me! I asked what they thought they were doing and they said they were coming to do the inspection and didn't think anyone was home. I told them I couldn't come because I was on the toilet and they had only waited 5 seconds anyway. The next day my husband installed a chain lock on the door. When the manager asked why, I said I didn't plan on them walking in on me again like that. All she said was OH.

You're right. I live in NC and when I was visiting my friend that stayed in low income apartments they towed my car. I never visited her anymore. She had to come to my house.

That’s a lot of inspections. They do try to come when you are not there. I had my stuff stolen when I was in housing. And I hated they just walk in. Thanks for this video

somebody in the history of low income housing was nasty and disorganized, had other people living there, had no food in the cabinets to feed their kids and fucccc'd it up for everybody else for the housing authority to have to visit every 6-8 weeks. that is ridiculous. great video.

complete nightmare. We had inspections sometimes monthly. They are prisons. Wilson Apt in St Cloud, Mn run by Matt Swanson. He is totally narcissist.

It isn’t like this in all areas. I lived in low income once and they were nice! Only had inspections every 6 months and they didn’t have any meetings or make you work more hours. It just was what it was and they were ok with that. And it was mixed also, some paid higher rent, some on state and disability and low income.

Thank you for posting this! I've been on the long list of several HUD homes in my area (near Tampa, FL) & have been trying to find a place to live ASAP that I can afford. I'm disabled & live alone in the same rental home for 9 years, but now my landlords have put the entire property up for sale & demanded that I leave right now. Individuals own the property (not a Corp), so I advised them that I know my rights & I know they can't just put me out without going through an eviction process (which they have no clue how to do - they have 10 acres w/ 3 small rental homes on it, which they've owned since the '60s). However, this makes me the "bad guy" in my current living area, causing them to argue w/ me over EVERYTHING. It's best that I just leave ASAP, before somebody gets hurt. LOL. Since I'm disabled & can't work, I live totally on my disability income, which is approx the amount I used to make WEEKLY before I became disabled. It's frustrating. Based on what you've shared here, it sounds like I might be trading one horror for another if I move into low income housing. I can't possibly attend monthly meetings about jobs (that I can't possibly get or perform). If somebody came into my house without my knowledge, they would get shot (I sleep w/ my loaded .45)....and THAT would easily become a life-long nightmare (I'd prefer to get through this life without killing another person). Most people in my position simply move in with a family member. However, I have no family left - they're all dead. I've contacted distant relatives, who all say they have no room for me & all want to pray for me. I'll accept the prayers, but I REALLY need a roof. I had 5 very close friends when I became disabled who all stepped up & helped me tremendously, but I've buried 3 of those close friends in the past 2 years.....and one is currently is in the hospital recovering from brain surgery, where her 10 yr battle w/ cancer is closing in. The one remaining friend is overloaded & currently has a live in helper (he runs an animal shelter from his home), leaving no extra room for me (although I think he would prop up a tent in his yard for me to use, if it came down to that). Anyway, thanks so much for the insight you've offered here about low income housing. It gives me an entirely different view from what all I've been told. I thank you for your honesty!

I feel u. I had Section 8 and they attempt to treat u different. If u try to stand up for yourself by understanding your rights, they try to find things to bring charges against u. It was a way for single parents to live on their own, but if u can afford to live on your own choose that and save yourself the anxiety. Thanks for sharing...

I'm so glad you got the hell out of there who cares how nice it is you basically pay full rent in the senceof giving up your privacy and freedom and you no longer have control of your own life so you have shelter not a house or home for you or your child no way to live

This is such an important story. It makes me hot under the collar. I am so sorry that you went through such humiliation. You deserve privacy wether you have money or not. I believe the government would like us ALL to be under this much control. They are just practicing on low income folks. We have thousands of these new apt buildings going up I Orlando. My wife and I have a section 8 voucher and pay $475 and live in a 3.5 bedroom,1 bath, 1 car garage house in a nice and safe area and we both work, we don't deal with all the bs she dealing with, not worth it; we're about to purchase a house.

Sounds like my kids living in my house. It has made them not want to live with us. They want to be independent with their own rules. Sounds like these apartments may have had issues with others and now need to raise grow people. Glad you saw the light. In my pass I lived near section 8 folks and they would have parties until 4am and I had to go to work the next day. The worse was when some guys were in my backyard playing cards, seating in my chairs and drinking. I asked them to hold it down since I worked nights at that time. The didn't leave they just said ok. The next day I had to put the table in chair back in the house. I saw a middle class black neighborhood go down the tubes. Where there was grass was now dirt. There was once a screen door but now they just walk go thur it. This is why some people do not want section 8 or low income in their neighborhood. It hurts the decent low income people the most.

I sympathize with you, and anyone else needing affordable-managed housing. Unfortunately, there are so many others who abuse and violate (what should be common sense) 'good neighbor tenancy' rules that I must say - you would not have wanted to live there if the tenants were not 'policed' in that way. What results...loud music, people hanging out in parking lots and other areas, unsupervised kids, car repairs in parking areas, drug and alcohol problems, abandoned vehicles, unchecked visitors, code violations, disturbances of the peace, and the like make for a tenancy which is (probably) worse than hell. I KNOW! 🧘🏾‍♀️

They do that even in regular apartments at times. I had that problem in a regular apartment i lived in. I was so annoyed i moved out after the lease ended when they did the inspection the manager begged me to stay i wouldnt. When they see your single and black woe be unto you.

Section 8 housing needs strict rules or the apartments or houses would get destroyed. There will be thefts, drug abuse and MURDER. Be happy u have a place to stay.

They should make an appointment before they come! But these controls are necessary!! Housing projects were known to become a disaster!! If they want to keep this kind of housing this is absolutely necessary!

I don't know about United States but here in Canada inspectors and apartment managers by law cannot enter your unit without a twenty four intent to inspect notice

I live in a public housing development in New York City. They don’t do all that nonsense they are doing where you live. There is only a yearly inspection. Can’t have a dryer. Gotta pay extra for air conditioners. The rules and regulations can be annoying but I get it. You are getting an apartment at an affordable rate so they want to make sure you are maintaining their apartment. They want you to work. They don’t want you having men or anyone over because they want you to be focused on work or school (I don’t get the part about not being allowed to have a husband though). The meetings are for you to better yourself. I am glad you got out though.

Does anyone think its wrong the STATE deciding famley living rooms. Seems like parents should make the decision when kids need to have separate rooms.... maybe even the kids decide when they feel like the need a little more privacy.

I liked your story. But I am glad that they do not "allow" boyfriends" to live in with you. Because too many grown men looking for a momma to take care of them: lazy and lethargic. They "pimp" themselves out for a place to live, and deep down inside: these type of men are really heartless. They really do not care for the woman, just using her for their living. They need to get a job. And if a boyfriend has a job, then clearly you would not qualify for a low income apartment, unless he has a low income job. But the way they are "all accepting" of gay couples, and they do rent together....so..? IDK how one couple can "rent" and get by with it, but other "couples" can not. This world gets crazier and crazier as time goes on. :(

I reside in low income senior housing and I don't find the rules unreasonable. The classes I've attended were quite helpful. The rule for guests minimizing their stay is to keep the tenants safe. There have been tenants that have had overstaying guests and have taken advantage of the host tenant by moving in and living for free. I don't mind the "walk-throughs" either. As a retired home health care professional, I use to work in these buildings and have seen my share of hoarders. The administrators SHOULD check often to ensure that hoarding does NOT take place. An explosion of vermin population can cause a myriad of health issues. I'm sure that this lifestyle isn't for everyone. Research any living situation before embarking on any change. Good luck!!

They don't do inspections on low-income housing buildings here, and they are filled with grown men with no job living with their 65 year old mothers, garbage everywhere, drugs in just about every apartment, shootings every week. I'd choose a group meeting and inspection over that shit any day.

Stop lying. I received a voucher and they barely bother me. They ask me income questions rarely only when it's time for recertification. Must report any changes to household composition and income changes within 10ndays. I never had anyone tell who I can and cannot have in my apartment. Stop misleading people. Usually when people claim no privacy of because they are trying to get over and have someone stay there who shouldn't be. Smh

I Pass by those apartments and they are very beautiful. We were in the area the other day and I told my friend they were low income she didn't believe it. They do that because other have bought in bad element and made it bad for everyone. You have people that are nasty and they want the apartments to stay nice. Also to get you independent and not get comfortable in with the cheap rent. I have a friend who said it wasn't worth it with 5 kids Girl i would have went off if I woke to 2 men looking at me. This section 8 housing program sounds like hell! I live in a low income housing and I don't have any stipulations that you have had. Have you looked into landlord and tenancy act or is section 8 housing covered under the landlord tenancy act? It sounds like these companies are breaking the law

I think it's rediculious the low income apartments makes people have inspections,i lived in one back in 1991, when my daughter Crystal was born.And they did inspection to.But they didn't do meetings, that's is rediculious and they act very greedy.

Only 1 inspection from HUD since being here. 24 hour notice before coming in our homes,we are not suppose to have unauthorized people living here but they do not harrass people about it unless they really notice it.

You have to watch out for mold in any place you rent..mold will make you very sick..kicking someone out because if a shoe.wow. these apartments are invasive to privacy. Meetings hell no. Definatly put one of those stabilinzing security sticks on your door so nobody can come in unless you let them in.i have heard too many times maitenence people just walking in.and they do not have a legal right to just walk in unless you know they r coming.

Where is this apts? I live in apts in arizona and their low income apts and i being living there for 7 yrs and i havent had those problems i live in a 2 bedroom 1 bath and i only pay 196.00 with utilities included.. .

I understand what you are saying. But you are an exception. So many people sneak in drugs, men , family members and they destroy the apartment. Again, you sound as though you really try to do well for yourself and your children. But so many don't. And often these people try just to take advantage of the assistance that is provided for them. What a terrible experience. Im sorry you had to go through that. The excessive inspections are a violation of personal rights. Also, for those meetings is a gross assumption that people were not self sufficient. What if you have a career such as a teacher? They don't make enough money to live in a decent place when first starting out. Their income level should not force them (or You for that matter) to give up personal rights.

If I could have a safe cheap place to rent I would let the inspector check anywhere in the place. Who cares? I have rented places and been questioned who I have sleeping over and had to register visitors. Mind you this was in a low crime area and no taxes were going to my rent. It was a full market price apartment that I was paying myself. That is just how the world works, the good part is with renting if you dont like it you can just move.

I realize all things in time however, you will overcome your current circumstances. I was denied Section 8 when my children were young. But they are grown adults now. Something to think about though, be aware that once you've reached that next level up ... the so-called 'middle class' you may find that boot on your back again. Somebody at the controls is making backdoor deals and de-regulating everything that was put into place. Many are having difficulty keeping their homes ... not mansions, not castles, basic 4 wall structures. Some people have just given them up and walked away. I'm not even gonna talk about the elderly and disabled. Watch as well as pray, it's bad.
