I Paid OVER $1,000 for These Broken Handhelds - Let's Fix Them! These go for about $300 just for parts but if I can get them working they're worth $400-500. I have to deal with the power issues, corrosion, and a bunch of leaking capacitors. These handhelds from the 1990s are pretty cool though and fun to try and fix.

Hey I'm not sure if you've ever done this before but regarding the ripped pads on that cap you're replacing at about 32 minutes, use some copper tape in place of the broken pads. Just cut to size and since it's sticky on the bottom, it shouldn't move much then just bridge the copper tape with a part you scratch off or run a bit of wire to it and it'll give you much more room to work with when soldering in the new cap. I did it to my Sega CD when I modded it with an FRAM chip (I ripped one pad and replaced it with some copper tape) and it worked like a charm!

I had connected it through a power strip/my mistake/ the heat softened the wire and gave a phase to the ground and the fridge started and stopped and so on endlessly, it didn't want to work. I removed the circuit board and saw that one of the capacitors was a little swollen, barely barely, it wasn't even visible. I found another one with the same specs from my brother's workshop/ rest in peace, he passed away almost two years ago 😢/ found the same one from a diode lamp, replaced it and the fridge worked. I found one of these at an auction a while back. No one but me knew what it was. A pawn shop owner was the only one bidding against me and he thought it was an old portable TV, because it had the tuner on it. It had 6 games with it, too. 4 sports games that were worth maybe $50 total, and Chase H.Q. and Soldier Blade! I paid $50 total at the auction, including auction fees. I had to recap the entire thing, because the sound was barely audible and the screen started fading. Got a recap kit off ebay, and replaced them all. It brought it back to life. I sold the entire bundle for $600, 3 years ago. At the time, that was about 20% under price charting value. I let it go because I was getting 10X what I paid for it, already.

On that first unit, immediately, as soon as that board got flipped over, I was taken back to the early 2000's, where a young 20's me was scoring all sorts of CRT monitors that flickered, or just outright didn't turn on anymore. A lot of NEC and Sony ones. I soon found that white glue had a tendency to become conductive when it yellowed and aged. Haha I've worked on a good handful of these and it's interesting to see how you tackle them! You definitely just need to recap them all fully, there's even a hidden cap under the middle metal shield that tends to go bad and sometimes corrodes some vias, killing off some of the ram>cpu traces and prevents loading games entirely, it's definitely a job to get them restored but if you do dedicate the time to them, absolutely worth it - was nice to see none of yours seemed to have the switching diode near the backlight transformer die on them though! Something to note is even if the transformer dies on them the game gear has one that you can pull as a replacement, works well enough! Best of luck getting them working

I was a sega master system kid growing up - my dad worked in electronics and knew the master system was the more powerful system and had a better color palette but he bought me a the turbo express for my 11th birthday and i was THE coolest kid in school because everybody wanted one. Was lucky to get 2.5 hours out of the batteries tho, my dad bought me rechargables lol. Always been a fan of the alternate systems.

I feel like between #1 and #2 you could probably get a working system if you're willing to troubleshoot.

Steve, maybe consider making a Discord server where all subscribers can come together? Maybe discuss electronics, help people with issues and so on!

Those K-files are used in root canals in dentistry. What you have there are hand files, so basically a twisting motion is how you would use them in a tooth to remove tissue. You could also buy a rotary and possibly use that instead of hand filing (different type of file) I would guess.

I remember playing Bonk's adventure on these. I liked that you only needed 1 cartridge for the home console and the portable.

Oh the Turbo/PCE Express is on the same level as the Sega Nomad, full console hardware in a hand-held. It's amazing to see that you got at least two of them working given their age and condition/state they where in. Side note: I had one of these and Lynx years ago and tried repairs around 2014.. that didn't go so well at all.

It's interesting to see K-files being used for something besides root canals. Great video!

I have 3 Turbo Express systems myself. One complete in box all original, one loose modded with a bigger screen, one loose all original. All recapped and working. I love the Turbo Express! The latest short video on my channel I quickly show and mention them.

I wanted one of these back when they came out. But they were soo expensive my parents said you have a Gameboy already. Yeah but I can't play Neutopia 2 on Gameboy or watch some analog television on a possible even more expensive analog receiver .

Good job on these Turbo Express consoles! The one that was modded was too far gone! The previous owner did not take good care of it!

Electrolytic capacitors suuuuuuck! The damage they can do is just brutal to any PCB. I'm glad someone made solid state caps because if they do go bad, no leaks! Steve congrats on beating cancer! May God continue to work through you and continued healing.
