Imo the second one turned out the best, but the very first one really reminds me of Norman Rockwell's style ! I like that one too. What would happen if you used pink instead of white, would that even work to reduce the whiteness you're not happy with? Also what if you did an under painting? Like tried one portrait with a green under painting & one with a red under painting? I've never painted with oils, so I'm genuinely curious! I also think the whole composition is pretty cool as well!💙

Dude. This is phenomenal. Usually I'm not that interested or too scared to do art challenges, but I'm definitely doing it this week. Your use of colours and tones in your paintings is beautiful. It's awesome to see an artist who also sketches out their subject matter free-handed using a photo reference rather than just tracing it. It's a great skill to have, so I applaude you! Instead of painting, I'll be using a ballpoint pen so hopefully they turn out as well as yours has!

It's really interesting to see you juggle with the not-so-simple concept that's a self-portrait. I personally love drawing faces, but I'm more of a graphite wh*re XD So it's very refreshing to see you use paint as a medium. Lots of people underestimate the challenges that artists can "face" (pun-intended) when they undertake the task of making an autoportrait, the most familiar subject, because of how critical we can get towards ourselves and how trained our eye is to spot all the little mistakes we make, that's why I always had the tendency of avoiding self-portraits altogether. I've finally had the courage to make one with graphite, and as a challenge I've done it upside down 😂... Not quite up to what you've achieved here, but it was definitely a fun experience. Keep up the good work buddy 😊

The first time it can be intimidating but the more you do the easier it becomes. I stretch all of my canvases now instead of buying them because it's cheaper and the surface is better than the factory smooth finish of store bought ones. If you want any help I can give you a couple tips.

Daenerys I would love that... maybe I’ll have to try again. Thanks so much!
@Nerflover10097
@Nerflover10097 4 года назад
When you are using wooden stretcher bars make sure they are straight and not warped. If they feel too tight when putting them together give them a light tap with a hammer so that they're flush. Ensure that you have a two inch border of canvas around your frame and make sure that the beveled side is facing down as that is what the canvas is going to grab on to. Make a mark using a ruler on the canvas and make a small tear with scissors and then tear it by hand so that it goes straight. Pull one corner firmly over the frame and put one staple in the middle of each side so that the canvas is evenly distributed. For the corners it's difficult to describe in writing, but try to fold with the edge of the frame so that it comes out straight. Make sure to pull the canvas tight as you staple, but you don't have to exert yourself as the gesso will tighten it even more. Your staples should be at least an inch apart. When you are finished stretching it take a hammer and tap the staples to make sure they went it. If it sounds like a drum when you tap the canvas it's ready to prime and paint! Sorry for the lengthy response hopefully that's helpful, worse case scenario if you make a mistake you can use a flat head screw driver and pliers to remove the staples it's very forgiving.

Is starting with the nose an academic method of drawing faces? Im a self taught artist, and the loomis method never worked for me, and i found that starting with the nose is the best way for me to judge the rest of the proportions and really capture the face. Just found it interesting that you do the same thing and didn’t know if it was a trained thing or a preference. Thanks!
@slewp
@slewp 4 года назад
Will Rogich not really sure. I think there are a lot of methods out there for sure. I don’t really have one nailed down. I kinda fumble around till I think it’s right. But you can arrive the same I think for starting anywhere

With the people I've talked to the only successful truly good method is the one that works well for you. When I've read interviews from ppl like Loomis they usually reveal that they don't strictly follow their own rules even - e.g. Zorn palette is great and he used it tons. But he had tons of other colours around too for when he wanted them. I know when I do figures some poses are best with line of action, some with value building, some with gesture, some with bean body construction, etc. The more strict academic route I'd say is Bargue casts (best for pre-impressionist work) with Niccolaides guesture construction, though Loomis (comics-ish) and Bridgeman (illustration-ish) all clearly give results. And each extends to different styles more effectively. From what I've read the best method is to look at how an artist you like approaches and breaks down the visual image for 1-10 months then try something else. The parts that work will stick with you. The parts that hold back.... Well look carefully and see what you like in your work. Ultimately if it works for you and makes the art you want it's not wrong :) (but it's always worth experimenting with different methods). So starting with the nose sounds great to me
@Illusionaire1
@Illusionaire1 4 года назад
I think you can either go for the eyes, or anywhere else. Since the eyes are what people usually look first, there is some pros in starting with those and making sure you get it right. But if you don't like starting this way, then anywhere else is fair game.
