Getting multiball on Firepower is the most satisfying thing in the world, hell, keeping a ball in play for more than a minute is usually an achievement! I was convinced as a kid, there were electromagnets under the floor, and watching now as an adult, it's very clear this machine was designed to be [mechanically] extremely one-sided! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love how fast it was though, and when the ball cracks against the glass sometimes. I would remember the engineer would always give a scowl when it happened when this game was new, because it was something that rarely happened before Firepower. Williams always had the best sound effects, in both pinball and video games, even thought so many were recycled. PS. My new favourite RU-vid channel! Love it!

My family was in the coin-op business from the 60's till the video game collapse in the 80's. Been around pinball my whole life. I remember being around 8 years old and being enthralled with Bally's "Fireball" which I believe was the first multiball machine. Then when I was about 13 or 14 Firepower came out and I was just blown away. It really was the beginning of the "modern" pinball machine.

Balls-A-Poppin that Bally’s released in 1956 was the first EM pinball with flippers with multiball (was able to have up to 9 in play), Live Power released by Dudley Clark Co. in 1934 was the first EM pinball with multiple ball capability on the playfield. Balls-A-Poppin also had no chimes and had instead only the knocker which would sound off anytime a ball hit a lit bumper or rolled over a rollover switch would cause the knocker to sound.
@yadabub
@yadabub 4 года назад
As a youngster, my first multi-ball machine was very confusing. The game kept stealing my balls and wouldn't give them back. It seemed like the game was lasting forever as it gave me 'too many' balls. Then when it returned my balls, my flippers didn't work any more. On my second quarter, I didn't manage to lock any balls, so it felt like the game cheated me out of those 'extra balls.' I was left confused and disappointed by the obviously broken pinball machine. =D

I loved Firepower, but I hated working on the system 8. That long header connector between the CPU and the I/O PCBs was a PAIN! The WPC system was so much easier! Williams used the 1408 DAC for sounds and (later) they used a chip called a CVSDM (continually variable slope delta modulator) for speech. It’s a 1 databit chip designed for telephony communication so the sample rate was poor (about 3K) because that was the sample rate of a telephone. They stuck with that all the way up to Pinball 2000. Hey, remember the Bally “Squawk and talk” speech board? And Centaur also used a very cool echo board that Bally called “say it again” The first WMS pinball to use a synthesizer chip for music (YM2151) was the great Pin*Bot, which imo, was the best WMS pinball ever made.

I always felt this game called to me --- you could not resist repeating everything it said. FIREPOWER!!!! I sucked at pinball, and sucked at this game, but I played it possibly more than any other pinball game ever. You simply could not ignore this machine! ( Yeah XENON tried to lure people with "Try a tube shot!" - but everyone knew that fembot was a trap)

It took skill to achieve multi-ball on the early SS machines. Firepower and Flight 2000 were two of the most difficult games to get multi-ball. It's a far cry from modern pins where it seems like you don't really have to do much of anything at all to get multi-ball or a jackpot.

I remember playing this game, way too much. It just missed one voice announcement "Wallet destroyed" Nice to see it with the neon display tubes, non of this LED junk. LED's on the playfield ok, not in the displays. Maybe someone can come up with an amber seven segment display that mimics the gas discharge goodness, however I havent seen one yet.

Try cradeling the ball on either flipper. You can then get better control over it and then have better control over your shots.

with" bally", what you would do is make a "FIST" and hit the plunger with your "PINKY" finger, that way the POINT on the plunger will not "DRAW BLOAD"!!!!. , with "williams- have at it. one of the BIG problems with the electronic flipper units was dirty contacts( low voltage/ low current) unlike the electro- mechanical units, the arcing/sparking of contacts would keep the contacts "CLEAN". " I really did not know why ,but on "FIRE POWER" the right flipper contacts that "rotated" the "FIRE" lights would always get dirty(lights would not rotate)
