There is a meter that fills up little by little every time you receive damage that's surrounding your characters picture. Once it's half way filled up you have the option to press down on your right joystick and it awakens you player. In other words makes them stronger. It only lasts for bit and once you use it you'll notice the meter going down slowly. Just imagine it as an hour glass I guess. And for some characters there are little cutscenes of them transforming like goku going super saiyan or naruto going sage of six paths mode.
