In the U.S., North and South America are understood by most to be 2 different continents rather than 1 continent. Continent separation can be largely arbitrary. Some consider North and Central America separate from South America--some do not. Some consider Europe and Asia 1 continent--some do not. To be entirely consistent, if you consider North and South America as 1 continent, you should also consider Europe, Asia, and Africa as 1 continent as well because they are all connected (only being separated by artificial canals--Panama and Suez, respectively). Also, it is largely understood by people in North America and overseas that "America" refers to the USA and "Americans" refers to the citizens of the USA.
