Thanks for the nice comments about the Adventure Games. I was lead programmer on them, and it was an absolute dream come true for me to work on them, as a lifelong Who fan. Also, I met my wife when she came in to do animation on the Gunpowder Plot, so they had a pretty major impact on my life too 😀
@@crashbash8549 To to honest, the development itself wasn't a huge amount of fun for the most part - it was a very small team with a tight schedule (that couldn't move, as we had to release the episodes in time with the TV stories). The main reason we went for a single large story for the second season was the difficulty of essentially making four games at once for the first one :) That said, we got to visit the then-new TARDIS set in Wales, which was a great day. And, for a classic Who fan like me, it was amazing looking round the prop store. For some reason, they had the 5th Doctor's TARDIS prop in there, along with loads of other stuff. There was also a press day they did at our studio where they brought journalists in to see the game and also watch a preview of Time of Angels before transmission. So I got to watch that in our work meeting room before it was on TV. They also brought the paradigm Dalek props out to Sheffield train station, and had Nick Briggs voicing them live talking to commuters, which was a lot of fun. The video mentions the voice acting in the final episode - that one was directed by Gary Russell and recorded at Moat, where Big Finish do their recording, which probably helped a fair bit. I'm not sure how/where the others were recorded.
Im glad you got such a thing out of working on the adventure games and I want to say thank you for making one of the biggest parts of my childhood and im sure of so many ithers my age, played those games over and over when they came out, I replayed them again recently. Also just wondering if you could disclose any details on the potential stories of the second series? I've heard rumours of episodes that were originally part of this second series (There's a comment on this video saying Into the Dalek should have been part of it which I thought was interesting) Thanks again and thanks in advance!
@@sircampbelltenson7297 I'm not aware of any other plans for season 2. There may have been discussions internally at the BBC but certainly by the time we started working on Gunpowder Plot, it was always the plan to just do one longer episode for that season rather than the four we'd done previously. We didn't have other games planned that got cancelled or anything like that.
The most characters ever ? Doctor Who Legacy. The Puzsle RPG ! with free flowing gems! Hundred characters and the deepest cuts! I hold the world record for highest damage in a single attack. My RU-vid channel has the tricks and strategies anyone would need to learn.
The lonely assassin game was made by the same people who made the phone game Sara is missing which also has the "oh you found a phone on the ground someday" plot but it's more culty horror-y and just fantastic! Not surprised to hear that they managed to bring some magic to the doctor who games.
I’m really sorry to break your heart because it’s a fact you bring up multiple times: but the Emperor Dalek DID appear in the classic show, in ‘evil of the daleks’ in 1967 with the 2nd Doctor. Fantastic video though!
@@xxnoxx-xp5bl the Imperial Daleks are created to be only loyal to Davros - the other Dalek population which probably outnumbers Davros lot think otherwise and don't see him as an Emperor lol.
35:50 You can also spoil the Silurians at the beginning of the game. In the TARDIS, touching the console cause 1 of like 5 conversations to happen. For some reason one of the conversations replaces Amy with a Silurian. Don't know how or why, but it always happens on that one conversation.
@@plantainsame2049 IIRC, in Extended Universe Dalek Chronology the Silver and Blue "Skaro" Daleks actually came after the (Grey and Black) Renegade Daleks! so they had a lot of upgrades from them, hence why they could Levitate, just not very high or for very long as it drained their power battery banks too much..so Stairs were still a no go , but, originally restricted purely to the Ruined Bunkers and the New Dalek Dome, some downgrades as well, such no Internal Nuclear Reactors for power like the Earlier Renegades, hence the need for the little "Dish" on the back to Receive Broadcast Power. Hence why they could Levitate for a short while to a low height while the Renegades couldn't, but Renegades did not need the Dish on their Backs and could use their Guns more Frequently, an inboard Nuclear Reactor rather than a Battery-Bank like on the Skaro Dalaks. So the 1960's "Skaro" Daleks are sort of the "Missing" Mutation between the Renegades and the (White and Gold) Imperial Daleks, as Davros based some of the Upgrades for the Imperials on the Upgrades for the (by then Extinct due to the events of "The Daleks") "Skaro" Daleks, with the Bronze "Time War" Daleks being the Successor to the Imperials, then the Paradigm Daleks, which also attacked an Alternative Universe that featured a Human "Doctor" ...thus making the Peter Cushing Films Canon, but only via AU!, being their Successors based, as were the Renegade and Skaro Daleks on Pure Kaled Genes rather than a Mix of Kaled, Human, and Thaal Genes like the Imperial and Bronze Daleks. There is also a "Fandom" Mutation that combines the more "Tank" like Bronze "Time War" Dalek Design with the "Imperial" Color scheme, (and it looks Incredible!) so possibly the Missing Mutation between the Imperial and the Time War Daleks. Dalek Lore is proper Complicated.. and that's before we come to "The Abomination" that is the "Special Weapons Dalek" ! Mutated Even Further and Sent Insane by the Massive Radiation Backwash from it's Nuclear Barrage Cannon, resulting in a Mutant so utterly unhinged that the Other Dalek's are terrified of it and Refuse to go near It (Hence the Rust and the Dents and the Oil and Grease Stains and General "unmaintained" Appearance that it has), and would even Exterminate it (as "Impure" and "Not a Dalek" due to the Extra Mutation from the Gun's Radiation) if not for the Emperor Dalek (Davros) Personally Ordering its Survival! There are also the "false daleks" from Jubilee (Daleks. Do. NOT. Sing!) , Old Disused Cases taken from Dead "Skaro" Daleks that lost the 1903 Dalek War against Earth (6th Doctor Big Finish Extended Universe) in Another Universe, and controlled by Mutilated and Brainwashed Slaves (People with Dwarfism and other Disabilities) to think and act like a comedy "Music Hall" Dalek for the Amusement of a Dictator and His Wife in a Terrible, Nazi Germany Style (like in "inferno") , "English Empire" that came about as the Result of the 1903 Dalek War.. if you really want to get Complicated. Yet, it does explain why 1960's Dalek's could just about Levitate.
@@simeonyves5940 Wait what source States that because from what I can tell. They seem To be three different versions of the empire Pregenesis post genesis and post time war They were all classic before Genesis. They were gray after and then they were bronze after the time war But this is just me spit balling. I'd love to hear more about what you're talking about Also, I'm pretty sure the movies with Peter Cushing are movies in universe And the doctor has had peter cushing appear in movies after his death
That Lego Dimensions has not only every interior for the TARDIS, but the Fourth Doctor's interior on a date that's a multiple of four gets the wood panel alternate interior is such a phenomenal bit of programming. Also no mention that the Silence vanish if you're not looking at them?
Also a few continuity errors here. I don't blame you at all, but the dalek emperor did appear twice in the classic era before 2005 in evil of the daleks and remembrance of the daleks. Also the daleks did fly before 2005 in remembrance of the daleks and also it is suggested that one flew up some stairs in the dalek invasion of earth, their second story. Not to be annoying, just thought I might say incase anyone wanted to know.
@@Deliveredmean42 Yeah, absolutely. I'm actually trying to animate 2 of the missing episodes myself. Both parts of a story called the crusade which I hope to pitch to the BBC when it's finished
Also apparently a Dalek was ment to fly in Revelation of the Daleks when it killed the "Grave Robbers" after the destruction of the Glass Dalek, but wasn't well visualised but I think they updated it with new effects if I recall.
In 1985's Timelash, the villain got turned into the Loch Ness monster as well, and it could have also been the Myrka from the infamous episode Warriors of the Deep
Corrections (because I have been obsessed with Doctor Who for longer than I can remember): Daleks were first seen going up stairs in 1988. However, Daleks have been climbing stairs since the 60s, as in Dalek Invasion of Earth, humans run up stairs to escape Daleks, it cuts to them running away down the street, and then cuts back to the Daleks at the top of the stairs (without giving clues as to how they managed it). The third game on the BBC Micro didn't have Daleks or K9 due to the fact that the BBC does not own the Daleks or K9 - not due to the game being a Doctor Who reskin of a different, unreleased game. The Dalek Emperor was first seen in the 60s story Evil of the Daleks, which is a TV story (and the last time Daleks were seen until the mid 70s). The Dalek Emperor would reappear in 1988, but it's not the same Dalek (Davros usurped the Emperor off screen, and the giant white Dalek structure he rides in during the boss battle in Lego Dimensions is how he looked when he was Emperor). You called them "Saltarans" - they're Sontarans. Amy in Evacuation Earth likely has the Sonic Probe her older self had in The Girl Who Waited. Despite these mistakes, thanks for the video!
i decided to give the lonely assassins a shot because of this, and i must say that it’s the most fun i’ve had with doctor who in a long time. it’s genuinely phenomenal 10/10
Thank you so much for this video! Not only so I could see the games, but also for your words about Jodie. She got a raw deal in so many ways and I pretty much left all the fandom spaces because of how she was spoken of. I was kind of taken aback at how much it meant to me to speak well of her time as the Doctor.
I don't understand why people feel the need to be awful to actors who are just trying their best with the material they are given. Large fandoms like Dr Who and Star Wars really are scary things.
I always thought that the best way to make a Doctor Who game would be to make it an open world RPG with loads of different locations to explore from the show. There would be a character creation system so you could make yourself be the newest incarnation of the Doctor, or you could design your character to look like your favorite Doctor from the show. There would be multiple branching quests that you can complete in a number of different ways to complete your objectives. You can use persuasion to solve problems diplomatically; you could use your hacking and stealth skills to avoid enemies and solve puzzles. You could find and recruit companions to accompany you on your journey, or you could go it alone. Regardless, the choice is yours and you could carve your own Doctor Who adventure!
After spending way too much time playing around with Doctor Who mods for Garry's Mod(which are still the best video game Who content), I agree. These, like the really fun to fly and completely functional Tardis, would work so well in a true open world RPG. There are even some games that have figured out how to deal with open world time travel(No Time is one that comes to mind, but it's the simpler one), there really is nothing that'd stop a dedicated studio with today's technology.
@@BierBart12I rase you fallout who vagas a mod for fallout new vagas While the tardis models are less detailed And accurate actually flying it is more intricate And due to the nature of new vegas, you can do quests And where all the doctors outfits and A couple companions And the original masters And use different weapons like the Sonic the lazerscrewdriver and dalek gunsticks And it's in new Vegas which is already Is that a great role playing game so you can Continue playing as the doctor thew the normal story
Forgive me for nitpicking… 1.) The Loch Ness Monster actually plays a big-ish role in classic doctor who. Remember Sarah Jane even brings it up in school reunion. 2.) The Daleks elevated up some stairs before 2005. It was during the 7th doctor’s era believe it or not. 3.) The Dalek emperor made several TV appearances before 2005. The first time was with the second doctor, the last time with the 7th doctor.
If you enjoyed the lonely assassin I'd recommend the simulacra series, it's by the same developer and is a found phone horror series. It's so wonderfully made too!
Some of my favourite doctor who games were the flash games on the bbc website around 2010, and also that one FMV game that came with doctor who dvds around that time that was specifically designed for a tv remote. I thought that was so cool back then
Its great to watch this because I myself was curious about the Doctor Who games since my phase way back when. Although it was weird watching this. Really feels like 2012.
It's kinda crazy how so few of these games incorporate the concept of dying as the doctor causing you to become the next incarnation (dying as 1 makes you respawn as 2, 2 becomes 3, etc)
Final Fantasy XIII-2 had a time travel mechanic which I think would suit Doctor Who completely... Where you can basically travel to multiple timelines whenever you feel like, and when you return it being as if you never left... So you could have different quests and storylines happening concurrently (but, obviously, main quests being the focus to keep you following the plot). But I think a game where you have two or three stories you can switch between when you feel like or when it gets too difficult, all building to a final overarching plot, could be really really cool
The Gunpowder Plot game continues to be one of my favorite computer games I've played to date, just plain fun. And I don't know about you, but the Vashta Nerada game TERRIFIED me, so much so I was unable to complete it. Which is a compliment, because the Vashta Nerada are terrifying.
I know absolutely nothing about Doctor Who aside from the Tardis and weeping angels but this ain’t gonna stop me from watching an hour long video from Jon!
In the VR game, the part where the TARDIS materializes and you walk inside it for the first time is pretty magical. I'm sure the game loses 90% of its charm without the VR aspect
Doctor Who would make for an absolutely epic game if it had a decent budget. Imagine being able to pick your favourite Doctor (or make your own), design your own TARDIS, sonic screwdriver and pick your companions, and then travel through the universe and across different time periods saving the day, and fighting classic Doctor Who monsters! It would be incredibly fun and unique! And you wouldn't need any knowledge of the show to enjoy it. Doctor Who is very well-versed in making itself accessible to brand new fans.
This video was literally made for me. Gosh DW The Adventure games takes me way back. I remember trying to get them running on my Mac, they ran but very bad and I don’t remember how far I got.
Doctor Who would make for a killer immersive sim (a la System Shock, Thief, Prey, etc), what with the show's emphasis on gadgets, using your wits rather than raw firepower, and MacGyvering solutions to problems. Only problem is, those sorts of games are already pretty rare on account of how intensive and time-consuming they are to develop, so the realistic odds of seeing one from a _licensed_ property are about 0.00000001%.
Love this! Technicalities though… DALEKS are seen elevating up stairs in Remembrance of the DALEKS, a Sylvester Mcoy seria from 1988l. And the DALEKS Emperor makes their first appearance in The Evil of the DALEKS way back in 1967 AND in Remembrance of the DALEKS.
13:40 You should totally post all the hilarious clips of Anthony Ainley’s The Master. Btw the way, every time I watch Ainley’s The Master I can’t get Brian Cox outta my head. I keep expecting The Master to start dropping F-bombs 😂
The references in Lego Dimensions were amazing... seeing references to "Talons of Weng Chiang" in the Victorian period blew me away. I wonder how much crowd funding it would take to get a patch with more recent doctors and sets...
Fun thing about abandonware. It's technically still piracy, but there are large, open websites where people exchange it safely, without the usual dodgyness and possible malware of piracy websites because absolutely nobody is left to enforce the copyright
I'm aussie but I've been watching so long that the same law applies to me, if I miss an episode I get a text message from the royal family telling me to watch it or "you know what happens next" with a photo of the freezer
actually the sonic cutting rope with heat and melting ice makes sense. heat is just air molecules vibrating fast, and sound is just air molecules moving in waves. a certain pitch (or many pitches) could heat up the air around it
Public TV showed Tom Baker episodes in the U.S. in the 80s. So I loved Tom Baker as a kid, but David Tennant became my favorite of all time. Unbelievable performance.
You guys made this video at the right time lately been getting into doctor who! I love David Tennant so far alongside Matt Smith and Peter capaldi I'm looking forward to seeing the next doctor! And I've been curious on the video games thnx ❤
Daleks could deal with stairs in 1988 (Rememberance of the Daleks), but Mines of Terror probably would have paid an extra license fee to have Daleks. The cat was a brooch worn by Colin Baker's Doctor.
I remember getting Doctor Who Top Trump for Christmas one year, and being super excited. I mean a game where I get to exist in the Doctor Who universe, we don't have Top Trump where I live so the disappointment I felt when I learnt it was a card game was palpable. It sucks we never got a Doctor Who game during the Tennant era, I know kid-me would've loved it.
Lego dimensions has more Dr who areas you Missed you just need to use the Tardis in certain areas in other story stages. A Few Dr who themed and other sries and the last one in the Fantastic Beast level is Inside the ship in Red Dwarf another BBC show which is the only console game its ever been in.
54:07 in the most recent episode of the show celebrating 100 years of the bbc, Jodie did get to crossover with the more earlier versions of the doctor which i would argue counts
I remember playing The first of the Adventure Games back when it came out with my family and having a lot of fun with it. Also as a massive Portal, Doctor Who and LEGO fan I really wanted to get LEGO Dimensions and the 2 level packs I named but it was all far too expensive. I did end up getting the Chell and Cyberman minifigures plus a companion cube, those two are some of my favourite minifigures. I did watch playthroughs of the game and levels but this video made me wat to get the full game for myself because there's a lot more to each level than I thought.
There’s only one episode I’ve watched, and had over and over and over again for it is the best. It starts with two boring looking doofuses who get interrupted by what I presume is the doctor, he gives a coded message, sings and then he gets caught and beaten by one of those Daleks or something. Pure genius. I have tried to watch more episodes expecting the same level of genius but I always get a boring guy, sometimes with a woman and sometimes dressed as an elderly clown.
The start of the “The first adventure” chapter makes me want to see a history of video games in Australia, I wanna see where Australia, the UK and the US differ.
the emperor dalek just looks like a boss battle. like thats a video game developers wet dream for adapting a tv show or movie into a game. doctor who is kinda perfect in that respect for enemies. all. the little daleks which are hard to kill but over time you might get better at it, then you might meet the special weapons dalek etc etc, then the big emperor dalek, with a fight that would look similar to the glados fight from portal it's basically the villain roster every game developer wants, and it's not just the daleks, the cyberman have all these variants, cyber mats being the main one. doctor who villains are perfect for games because of this and because there are so many villains, sequals would work great, open world (or open universe games) would work great, and I hope now that doctor who is getting bigger again that we see more games that are much more higher end
I love the idea that The Doctor cares about a concept like gender so little that Ten's two thoughts when hearing "You're a woman now" are "So my voice must be kinda different then" and "OH I wonder what my girlfriend will think?"
When I was a teenager, I downloaded a game called Doctor Who and the Daleks, or just Dalek.exe for short, which was this kind of puzzle game in which your goal was to trick all the Daleks into running into each other and dying. It wasn't great, but it existed.
As a doctor who fan it makes me very happy when people who don't know the show watch things like this, to give them somewhat of a look into the shows history
8:07 I think I can explain this part. From what I've gathered, the BBC only owns the rights to the Doctor and Doctor-specific elements. But companions and villains are owned by the creator of those characters and the BBC would need to get permission from the writers or the estates of said creators to use those characters. So, as an example, for the BBC to use K-9 and the Daleks in this game, they would need permission from Bob Baker(K-9) and Terry Nation(Daleks). Edit: I think this only applies to classic Who. I don't know if this is still in effect for post-2005 Who.
Many Inhabitants of Britannia: Watch The Office or Doctor Who! Me, a german guy: I will take one Midsomer Murders and Geraldine McEwan's Miss Maple please.
i'm not even surprised that the doctor who lego pack was one of the best games, lego always manages to do the right things most of the time when it comes to video games like i hope they make a standalone game in the future and maybe even an animated lego doctor who episode 😭
8:05 "Is that a Dalek going up stairs? They're not meant to be able to do that until 2005!" Fun fact, 2005 was not the first time the Daleks had mastered stairs. In 1988, the 7th doctor had a close call with a floating Dalek in "Remembrance of the Daleks" the final Classic Who serial to feature the Daleks. The Doctor and his companion Ace run away from an Imperial Dalek who's workstation they'd just stumbled upon, naturally the Doctor spots a staircase and they run up it, only for a Dalek Agent to knock Ace out as she clears the doorway and then slams the door shut in the Doctor's face and locks it. The Doctor turns around, and that Imperial Dalek is already floating up the stairs to get him. No pause or forewarning, just 'oh s*** the Daleks can float up stairs now!' The Doctor gets away of course, but the episode ends there on a cliffhanger with the Doctor nearly face to eyestalk with a Dalek, and the stairs are not going to save him this time.
What I've learned from this video is that there needs to be some sort of Doctor Who stealth horror game. I remember when I was just a child and seeing Modern Who for the first time, everything felt hight stakes and dangerous. There were even moments I'd hide because I was afraid of things like the Autons or Clockwork Robots. The best gameplay in these games has often been lurking between enemies and some puzzle solving, so it would be amazing to see it done properly in this way. Especially if it was done in today's VR. Skulking around a Zygon ship, taking out the vents on Sontaran suits, avoiding the Dalek's line of sight, watching the Weeping Angels and hiding from the Clockwork Robots! Oh, if only. If only...
It's probably not quite the same thing, but I remember there being a game with a similar concept on the doctor who website years ago where you were exploring some place with only a torch and you had to keep track of and avoid the weeping angels while I think collecting things? I was a kid back then so I'm sure it wasn't actually anywhere near as good as I remember it being, but finally getting caught by an angel was my first ever jumpscare and I remember it fondly. so I definitely agree that a proper stealth horror game would be amazing and would really capture the essence of what it was sometimes like watching doctor who as a child! also imagine a game based on the vashta nerada!
I used to play the old flash games on the BBC website back then, so maybe the Doctor Who website had some extras I never got to play. I really wish I could have experienced this. I'd love a VR horror game of both the Vashta Nerada and Weeping Angels!@@a_platypus
I am choosing to believe you excluded the mobiles and flash games from your list not as a categorical standard, but in order to preserve your own sanity and piece of mind
There is actually another reason Mines of Terror doesn't feature K-9 or the Daleks and had to use stand-ins. That's because some DW concepts are owned by the people who came up with them--for example they need the Terry Nation estate's permission to use the Daleks. So to save on licensing costs they used a stand-in.
51:20 This is why in most games when a non cutscene conversation takes place I stop dead in my track to not risk running into a cutscene or something else that will cut off the dialogue.
It's always wild hearing how much more popular Doctor Who is in the UK than the US. Over in the states Doctor Who is that hipster franchise you pick up when you're too cool for Star Wars or Star Trek. Edit: Also, you only have to count David Tennant once to get to 14 considering the War Doctor exists.
Does anyone else remember Doctor Who Legacy? Loved that game on mobile. It was like a bubble game where you can pick your companions / doctors, and they would fight in episodes. Soundtrack was phenomenal too.
I remember playing the adventure games when I was a kid. I could only play them when I went to stay at my dads for the weekend, since we didn't have a computer at home
I had a BBC and I remember playing 'Escape from Moonbase Alpha'. Whilst not a Doctor Who game, the aim of the game is to find the Doctor on level 7. It also features Daleks (now known as Metal Maulers).
I find the number of British RU-vidrs nostalgic for old pc over consoles weird, because despite being from the mid 90s so almost as old as most of them I didnt even meet anyone else with a home pc for gaming until the late 2000's right before high school
17:42 so for the same price as Doctor Who Top Trumps, you could’ve instead had one of these: -Armored Core: 4 Answer -Forza Motorsport 2 -Halo 3 -The Orange Box with Half Life 2 and all its expansions, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 -Super Mario Galaxy -Oblivion -Project Gotham Racing 4 -WipEout HD Fury -Test Drive Unlimited -Metal Gear Solid 4 -Mass Effect -Dead Space
I would love a Doctor Who game with RPG elements where you start with a recently regenerated Doctor (the which you create), where you wake up with no recollection of what happened and having to build your way, and little by little learning new abilities and customize your powers and appearance over time.
In Dr who canon, there are several explanations for the Loch ness monster (Terror of the Zygons, Timelash, probably others I'm forgetting). Daleks have been mentioned flying since the 60s, but the first time we saw one hovering above stairs wasn't in 2005, it was in the 80s (Remembrance of the Daleks) Also I'm fairly sure that an Emperor Dalek appeared in Evil of the Daleks, a 2nd doctor story. Though this one is shaky, it may just be a different important dalek Sorry to be the um actually guy, I just like sharing things I know
I've honestly played like 4 different games with that same "you found someone's phone" concept. A Normal Lost Phone, Simulacra, the one I'm literally playing on my phone right now... it's a good concept but it's been done a lot.
so actually fun facts. the reason daleks werent in the mines of terror i think is because of legal stuff. because Terry Nation managed to keep the rights to daleks. so whenever daleks are needed to be put in Dr Who, Terry Nations estate needs to get paid. same thing for K9, whose rights belong to Bob Baker and Dave Martin. so one would assume the reason K9 was replaced by "Splinx the Cat" and daleks replaced by Controllers is probably related to the rights stuff and not wanting to deal with that
