i love how in jazz there’s actually no right or wrong notes. you just play what feels right. There’s no such thing as off notes, only a bad recovery.

When you start playing an instrument you realize that the notes are subjective he’s playing this perfectly there’s no stumble which is better then every note being exactly what it’s supposed to be also when playing an instrument you tend to wanna go off script

The most important skill for a jazz musician is the ability to listen, and let other bandmembers speak when needed; all the chops in the world are worthless if you can't use them in a democratic way with the rest of the band. If it's the choice between playing with the most skilled musician versus the musician who locks in and doesn't show off, any jazz musician would pick the latter in a heartbeat.

I googled it in Japanese! It seemed that Jacob was the main guest of the public video recording event for the street piano temporarily installed at Queen’s Square Yokohama. I am not sure if he asked some musicians to get together there or not. The only thing I know is a lot of musicians including professionals and amateurs wanna have a session or a duet with Jacob! I agree, as you said, it's so rare to happen to see a performance played by world class musicians who just “happen to show up” around random public pianos. But it happens sometimes!! There is no such thing as a failed musician brother.

Improvisation takes a lot of practice! Also there is no such thing as a failed musician. The first step to improvising is just hanging out and playing notes within the scale. When you first start it won't sound great. It'll sound like your just practices scales with a bit of extra "flare". But as you practice and get better and better you'll build your musical intuition and you'll have a better "feel" of what sounds good next. All of the greatest musicians in the world, household names, all had to start as a beginner. They all had to tap their first key, strum their first string, depress the first piston. Only you can decide if you want to continue playing. If you want to, you absolutely should. You owe it to yourself to pursue goals you deem exciting.

So glad you enjoyed the video. That’s the most fun part of jamming with guys like Ueishi-San.

The more you play with other professional musicians the more you learn that much of what we communicate with each other is non-verbal. Also there are musical queues and shared language that gives the signals as to what is to come. Also, the language of music needs no translation. 🙂

Great playing but do you really people there just happened to be a guy in Japan who randomly decided to bring his trumpet to the mall and happens to know how to play a randomly suggested American song from 42 years ago? They did not just meet moments before this started recording, it is just a click-bait headline that detracts from an otherwise great performance.

@@curtisbme An incredibly popular American song from 42 years ago made by a 3 time Grammy winner and a man who is widely considered to be one of the founders of the smooth jazz genre. Combine that with many Japanese peoples' fascination with the West and it's completely believable. If you're really good at playing an instrument then odds are you'll have it with you a lot of the time to practice or play at shows for people. Hell, he could've seen the guy playing the piano and decided to run out to his car and get his trumpet to join in. Who knows?

Yup yup! Lots of very good communication, but also minimal as they followed a very standard jazz form. Main melodic lines, followed by solos, followed by trades, and either into the melodic line again, or straight to outro (which is what they did). Hang out at enough live jazz and you'll see this all the time. Its why people can literally just come together and play - as improvised as everything is, there's a very well known structure embedded into the scene.

@@JacobKollerJapan I appreciate it might be a cultural thing . When I was just turned 2 my parents took me to a jazz concert . They delighted in their daughter dancing in the space between their seats and the front of the stage . Not so delighted when I started to dance up the steps onto the stage . I certainly found it hard to sit still listening to you both perform which is why I thought I’d comment .x

If you look closely, most of the audience *is* moving in time with the music, they're just doing so in a subdued, publicly acceptable manner. (it *is* a shopping mall, not a concert, and Japanese have a tendency to focus on what's "proper")

As someone who formerly was a musician person from 5th grade to college, I'm more shocked at a trumpet that new dynamics other than forte. Lol his playing is amazing, I love listening to great musicians because it truly is raw talent.

@@WaterYaDune Yep, in my 20 years of trumpet playing I have come across plunger mutes. The type of bends he's doing here (beautifully!) are very common in jazz and are not performed with a plunger mute.

True, you can just use air to bend the notes. Mutes are nice, but they aren’t necessary for that specific technique.
