I recently got a call from the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society, asking me to speak at their annual event here in Nashville. Without hesitation, I agreed and was pleased to also get asked by Chet's grand-niece, Meagan Taylor Anderson, to perform with her at one of the evening concerts. Today you get the heart of my speech from the event, and a book nook segment on Pete Anderson's new release, "How To Produce A Record: A Players Philosophy For Making A Great Recording."

Blind Lemon Jefferson use to run around with a local musician, known as Lead Belly, from the Shreveport, LA area 😁👌. Lead Belly's gravesite is around here, as well. We also have a bronze statue of Lead Belly playing guitar on the main strip in Downtown Shreveport. Wouldn't be surprised it if was his Stella thats modeled in the statue.

Is Shreveport still a music scene?

My Father took me to a Chet Atkins concert in the mid sixties with Floyd Cramer and Boot Randolph. I went up front to look at the gear and noticed Chat was using a Standel amp with black tape over the nameplate. I guess it was because he was a Gretsch endorsee at the time. I got to meet Chet when I taught at Cotton Music in Hillsboro Village of Nashville. I didnt know he was there and had never used a stratocaster vibrato arm and was wildly experimenting with pitch!!! Boy was I surprised that Mr. Guitar was there. I played Chet a Lenny Breau Be-Bop lick Lenny had taught me and he liked it. Glad you had a Great time Zac.

I always thought it was cool of George Harrison to always make mention of Chet as a major influence, and you can definitely hear wannabe Chet licks throughout the Beatles catalogue.

Awesome Zac - hope your talk was recorded! The performers at CAAS would've been all over TV back in the 50s/60s/70s. Now they play for the love of it and have to really be creative if trying to make a living of it. We're starting to lose now some of the generation that Chet and Jerry Reed first helped out and inspired - Buster B. Jones, Thom Bresh recently passed...hopefully younger players will pick up the torch on this beautiful style - it's so much more rewarding than playing Van Halen licks. Doyle Dykes, Richard Smith, Tommy Emmanuel and others all going strong...get out there to their gigs folks.

Attended CAAS for about 6 years. Really like the sessions where it’s like getting a lesson from world class players. Haven’t been able to go for several years now. Hope I can make it again while it’s still going on. It’s cool that you got to speak and play there.

Nice! I just watched Doyle Dykes (who I met when he was rep'ing for Taylor guitars at Guitar Trader in San Diego years back) who talked about being there. Love your channel, research, and playing. I'm 5 years behind Doyle, age wise, and countless years behind chops wise. Stay your course, it's very informative and entertaining, Zac!

CAAS is the most incredible gathering of guitarists one could wish for. I got to attend 3 or 4 times and always had a blast. Now I can no longer afford to go. There are alot of new up and coming players that are keeping Chet's style alive. It was never quite the same after Chet passed away but his music and his influence will never die.

Taking the opportunity to share one of my favourite Chet things: this wonderful story from Merle Travis ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9bdHRlG9T9I.html

There is a clip- or there was on YT of Chet and Jerry Reed- both playing Telecasters!

Yes, I have seen this before. I think that might be the time that Chet stated he couldn't do one of his tunes with the tele because it did not have a wiggle stick. Not sure if the tele was Chet's thing, but it was certainly Jerry's. But then, Chet (or Jerry) could make a telephone pole with strings sound great.
@JackTheSkunk

@@petertiffany8096 I always wondered if Chet was between endorsement deals at the time. Neither Gretsch nor Gibson would have been happy seeing him on national TV playing a Fender !! But then, he was Chet Atkins and could probably do whatever he wanted. 😅
