Nintendo traded input lag for slowing down the game to the ping of the slowest player, and a hat in time has client sided movement meaning to the server the characters are "teleporting" and thats ok for a coop mode in a 3d platformer but in smm2 it would just allow cheating. minecraft also does client sided movement whetch is why its so easy to cheat.

@@rob-son not everybody! only when your matched with someone with a poor internet connection. people that play a lot of smm2 online a lot will block anyone that consistently lags there matches. plus as you rank up, you get matched with other players in your rank. players with higher ranks tend to have better internet connections, so as you rank up the lag will happen less often. so if you like the idea behind VS mode, then stick it out a few ranks until you start getting a laggy match every 15-20 games.

@@StarrDust12 i don't just mean cheating with a client. i mean players walking straight through enemy's and walls on your screen because on there screen there just not there. and this would happen easily, even on an unmodified copy of smm2. im certain you or anyone else would hate seeing that in (almost) every match far more than the first few ranks being rough because of someone else's high ping. but maybe im wrong...

Nintendo’s servers have been this laggy for years now. They’re just too lazy to fix it I guess.

Diego Medina don’t pardon Nintendo for not knowing how to make online work. Literally every other large company in the games industry has better online then nintendo. It’s not like it’s hard, they just refuse to invest in it. Either don’t bother with online or at least make it playable

And Splatoon 2 online was free at launch.

Splatoon 2 doesn't lag because it doesn't wait for every player to update in the game (however you can see the lag in other players very clearly) Mario Maker 2 lags because it waits for everyone, which makes sense because it is a race, as one player could lag behind and that would be unfair

There are a number of factors at play, including the software being run, the quality of the player's internet connection, and the quality of any WiFi networks that may be involved. The switch hardware isn't one of those factors.

The system can handle Mario Maker 2 levels with all sorts of crazy stuff happening in singleplayer without dropping frames, so the CPU and GPU are clearly good enough. There's even the occasional multiplayer match that works just as smoothly as singleplayer. The problem is the game's netcode + poor player connections. @Greenboo5 already mentioned this, but the game is designed to wait for input from all players before continuing, which produces the results seen in the video. Splatoon 2, however, allows the game to continue even if a player has some dropped packets, which is the behavior you typically see in online games.

VirtualGD I still don’t understand why they didn’t give you the option to choose what level tags you want to play when you create/join a room. It would make things a lot better for multiplayer

That's another issue with the game... on top of the tags not always being followed, they can be edited by ANYONE who clears the course*. *unless the level creator locks the tags, which I didn't know was a thing until I saw someone else do it.

I think that when you make a level they should make you choose between single player and multi player, so people design the level for either 1 or 4 players, not both

The tag is meant mainly for searching for levels, and not the online... SO WHAT IS EVEN THE POINT?

@@slop313 No, they commented this because it is a genuinely flawed system with a relatively easy fix. That fix being the one described. Also they could add a separate point counter to the Co-op mode, giving people a reason to play it over the versus.

That's kinda the point though, is it not? You aren't competing for points, you aren't even competing at all. It just supposed to be competitive without the points. Just Multi-player but without trying to race to the end.

I can see maybe keeping no points system, but ending the level as soon as just one person reaches the end is kinda stupid; it gives basically no encouragement to actually work together, in you know, a cooperative way as the mode is seemingly intended. If I'm only halfway through the level but it stops because somebody else reached the end, with tons of time still left on the timer, I'm not going to have as much fun as I would if I had a chance to complete the level as well. The reason I do suggest having points is because one, well getting points is just fun, and two, if there's bonus points for others also finishing the level in a good time, then that actually adds encouragement to _help_ the other players, rather than leave them to fend for themselves and dash for the end on your own. As I pointed out in my original comment, in the current function of the modes as shown in the video, literally the only difference between the versus mode and the coop mode, is that one gives points at the end, and the other doesn't. That does not seem like good game design to me.

@@firockfinion3326 Sounds like a better solution would be to not take all players out of the level once it finishes. There's no need to put points in a casual side of comp, especially since we both know people are going to finish early for points with little regard for "bonus points".

Also I've seen people with terrible internet joining in just to lag other people matches, they usually have the most obvious troll names and once they drop off the online experience becomes super good.

The game shouldn't slow everyone down if one person has a poor connection -_- ... the standard for multiplayer is if someone has a bad connection you show them an icon e.g. a broken chain with a message bad connection and occasionally correct their position if they desync. Then everyone with a good connection can play normally, those with a bad connection may be annoyed... but with their own internet ... not the game. Also... the game should either only include maps tagged as "Multiplayer Versus" on multiplayer ... or it should have the option for you to flag your level as "Not Suitable for Multiplayer". Since right now you can be thrown into levels that simply do not work on multiplayer.

That's why I don't design multiplayer levels. I just don't know how to

From what I've seen buying mario maker 2 without online subscription, the only thing you can access is story mode and level editor. Playing anyones levels require online payment. Which is kind of sad as they could have limited that to just that aweful multiplayer and allowed people to share levels for free.

It's kind of funny, though, because they've done it _alright_ a couple of times. Splatoon 2 has problems, but it isn't unbearable. Has a good ranking system, you can play with friends, isn't absurdly laggy, etc. They could literally just copy Splatoon in most of their games and have minimal complaints, but nah, let's just do some other dumbass bullshit and fuck it up for no reason whatsoever. That works too.

Ike Yang the thing is Nintendo doesn’t use servers, it’s all peer to peer. Meaning every switch connects to each other, so if one person is lagging everyone will lag.

First of all: *their Secondly while yes a user should always try to have the best internet possible in any online game for anyone, the fact that Nintendo uses a peer to peer connection only makes the problem worse, as with servers typically a user's poor internet only impacts them and any person interacting with them. As can be seen with games such as Mario Maker 2 or Smash Bros, any time someone has a poor connection the framerate drops significantly to make the game nearly unplayable. This could be excused if Nintendo was still offering this service for free; however, even if it is still cheaper than most services Nintendo puts this behind a paywall. There is little to no improvement than the online on the Wii U, which was free. I do not believe it is unreasonable to expect improvement in a service when it requires money. TLDR: Yes the user should have good internet but Nintendo's approach to peer to peer connection is unreasonable for the price and the user experience.
