I Played The 3 Worst Rated Golf Courses in America! 

Hi there! I actually work at Bonaventure, I am glad you gave the course a shot. As the reviews show, the course used to be worse for wear. We have recently gone under new management and we’ve been rapidly improving our course trying to bring it back to life. A couple things to note, the bathrooms, the key is attached to your cart key as it has 2 keys, if you look closely at 6:33, you can see that. 2. the billboard is not on our property and we hate it just as much as the highway right next to us, but what can you do? Also, we are getting new carts this winter! We as well have a new greenskeeping staff that is working on our property and holes 1,5, and 17 were completely stripped and redone. I am glad to see us out there on the internet, regardless of the criticism, we have a lot of work to do. Greenskeeper from Canada here - Those "damage" marks that you said were maybe caused by the mower (edit: on the first course) are actually intentional slices made by a specific machine. It can affect putting for a few days unfortunately, but it is how to propagate creeping styles of grasses. The slices will cut the stolons produced by the grass and create new growth to replenish bare spots. So yes it looks like they are trying to bring that course back to life. Fun Video!

The Florida course looks like Augusta National compared to the other dumps.

I play Bonaventure at least once a week. The management there has really made some great improvements. It's no wonder MrShortGame was surprised by the condition of the course as all the reviews he posted were at least four months old. A lot can happen over the summer, as in repairing the sprinkler system and the rebuilding three greens. Those new greens are a work of art and in perfect condition.

Was the second course actually closed? It looked like you never made contact with anyone, shouldered your bag and went off. The fact that you scored as well as you did was amazing.

This series needs to go viral...share it, post it...we need to make sure Matt makes all his money back on these videos...

That has to be the course record in San Antonio. If 3 of the top players in the world were with you I'd be shocked at any were breaking 75. Every putt is russian roulette. Loved every minute of it.

This is definitely your comedic niche. I just love them as they make me laugh as mentioned on the last one while getting through chemo. I laughed so hard again and the comments had me rolling. Appalled at the conditions but this is comedy at it's best. Still want to play a few wholes with you when we wrap this treatment up and I'm cancer free! As someone who grew up in Lake Elsinore and since moved, it pains me to see what the Links of Summerly has become. When that placed first opened it was so pure. Such a tough and fun layout that you just didn't get anywhere else.

Love these series. What a great idea. Please do more of worst golf courses of America reviews. The fact you fly to play these terrible courses just shows extreme dedication to the series.

Course 2 has me crying right now. How you were able to keep it serious during any of that course is beyond commendable.

I love it when you take us to such nice courses as these. Locally two of our courses closed due to lack of water. Nice to see green on a course and some of it was even connected. Keep up the good work and searching for more of these treasures.

As an employee of a golf course ,at 6:57,,those are punch marks for seeding on the greens ,and we do that tees too. Mowers only leave lines ,and uneven terrain on greens if uneven or offset, COME TO PINE HILL IN MEMPHIS TN ,when u get a chance

The first course is clearly being repaired. I couldn't stop laughing when you played the second one. That was great content right there. My sides hurt from laughing so much. I've never seen such tall grass on the "greens".

Matt, never laughed at a golf video so hard in my life. Also, thanks for the tip on scammers. You cannot tell a true offer from a scam. They mimic a true offer so completely they are virtually indistinguishable!

First course the greens were aerated with knives in the aerator rather than coring tines. It’s a relatively common practice to open the greens with little disruption. It’s not a substitute for coring (nothing is and nothing is better, change my mind) but it’s great in season. It looks like they’re trying to fix it up.

I hope this series continues. Honestly the most entertaining golf content in my recent memory.

You have proven to me that a good golfer can play pretty well regardless of the conditions! Thanks for the entertaining travel review of the three worst courses in America. I played a few holes at the sand golf course just east of Tonopah, Nevada, back in the 1970s. The course had been abandoned by then. The fairways were just desert that had been cleared, and the greens were made of sand. I always wondered what it might have been like when it was maintained.

Matt your commentary had me rolling until I had a coughing fit😂😂😂. I would not have drank from that water jug though. Hopefully you didn't get Typhoid Fever! 😅

That second course had me in tears😂 I loved seeing a puff of dirt on each shot and watching your ball bounce to and fro on its way to the hole. “Rolling 5 on the stimp” 😂😂😂

That Texas course looked to be the worst thing I've ever seen.

I live in south central Texas. The crazy thing is, I’m sitting here watching the video thinking to myself, this dude really has to go to Lakeside golf course if he wants to go to the worst golf course on the planet. I kid you not, 2 minutes later, he pulls up Lakeside golf course. Absolutely wild 🤣🤣

I get tough conditions playing in the Great White North. But at least owners here try to operate properly. It's comical the state of those bad courses. Really like to see more of the series.

Used to travel to Lake Elsinore frequently for business. Went by the “Links” many times and decided to take my clubs (about 2012) to give it a try. My goodness has this place gone downhill! Had some rough spots back then but nothing like this. Company I worked with was right next to the jump school and we’d occasionally get a stray skydiver on the roof.

The one in Florida can hardly be called a golf course. It’s a piece of unmaintained property with 18 randomly placed holes.

I live in south Florida and used to play Bonaventure a lot (pronounced bonna-venture) I hadn’t played in years but went a little while ago and also left it a 1 star review lol. This used to be the premier course in south Florida and hosted a lot of semi pro events and qualifiers. As you pointed out the layout is really great with well designed holes (that first par 3 with the waterfall was the signature hole) and plays pretty challenging with the water and wind but it has fallen into disrepair. Just unkept with patchy greens, the rough is actually st Augustine and weeds and the bunkers are more dirt than sand. I bet you had a better experience at Osprey Point, I was there the day you were filming lol.

Great piece. When living in Palm Beach from 2000 to 2010 I played Bonaventure a couple of times. It was in good shape and as you said a challenging layout. You were funny and polite with all your comments for the last two courses.

Played on Elsinore Highs golf team for all 4 years and Summerly was our home course 2010-2014. Crazy to see how far it has fallen. Used to actually be a very nice place. It now fits in more with the rest of Elsinore now though..

That first course was actually super nice, it just needs some TLC. The last one... man, terrible. But it makes me miss San Diego so much. If you're still out there, do a review on Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook! My old home course :)

Headgreenkeeper on a course in Germany here .. that first course was very good .. the guys know what they are doing .. you had some very true putts on those greens ... i am sure the course has gotten better this year ...you have played on a course that is in its improvement stage .. the head knows what direction he is going .. to say you dont understand the problem about disease on the greens .. its not as easy as just spray ... like many .. you dont understand how much work goes on to stop dollarspot .. would be good if golfers could look and try and understand what goes on behind the sport they love

Aayy! I used to play the Links at Summerly a couple times a week as a high school golfer. Even back then (15ish years ago) it was looking a bit rough in a few places. It's a shame, as the layout was fun and a bit different from most courses out here. As an update, it seems the course is now closed, and largely underwater (it was developed below the lake level in case of flooding) and all of the carts are now at other courses with the old Summerly logos still on them.

I've played that Canyon Lake course I believe many years ago. What a transformation. No members, no golfers around, no funds, not upkeep. The drought we had last summer didn't help the situation eirther. The cart with no windshield? I've never seen that before. Your're the best golfer I've seen outside of the pros on tours. The short game is razor sharp.

This is like Survivor Golf Edition😅. Absolutely LOVE this series.

My thoughts are many Golfers seem to be spoiled and entitled. They want these perfectly designed, green courses with short fairways and greens. I look at the three golf courses and I see challenge golfing; taking golfers out of their luxury courses and putting them onto a random/chaotic course. I think courses like these should be designed for the tour. See how the real pros can handle "cross country" style golfing. Now granted, there is still room for improvement for various things. For Texas and California, I'm assuming there isn't much grass because lack of water/rainfall?

I love this! It's so nice when someone can have fun with the not great things in golf. That first one, seems a timing issue. Was bad, someone showed up who cares, and being that it's Florida got good conditions for making things better. I looked up the Lakeside Golf Club and allegedly it is open. Though per the Google activity tracker thing, it's less busy than usual. Which, not a surprise. Also less busy than usual, usual when?

Ten years ago I used to live a few miles from Lake Elsinore and played Links of Summerly. The fairways were greener as were the greens. Finding your way around the course wasn't much easier and I would have been completely lost had not the 2 guys I played with pointed me in the right direction! Now I live in Austin and could make it down to San Antonio and play the course there.......looks like getting a tee time might not be a problem. As Meatloaf says.......2 out of 3 ain't bad!

I could barely see the screen with the tears rolling down my face when we got to the second one. I was waiting for Matt to bust out the launch monitor to see if it could cope with the lateral rollout. 😂 🤣

Remarks about the first courses… I’m an assistant superintendent and the yellow marks you’re seeing is due to 2 reasons: 1.) when the golfer hits the green and doesn’t repair it right the grass in the middle of the ball marks dies 2.) The biggest reason is Operator Error.. he’s not fixing the ball marks before mowing resulting in the mower nicking the turf which causes those yellow mark.

I think you should go try Sand Creek GC in Colorado Springs, CO. It's a nine hole par 29 course and it is horrible! Cracks in the greens, dead grass everywhere, and the worst bunkers I have ever hit out of. Once on a cold day, I actually put a big scratch in my sand wedge from just hitting a bunker shot! They have a very popular driving range that is open at night in the summer, so you can tell that is where all the money goes to. The course is sad, neglected, and just awful!

In the 1980's, I lived in the panhandle of Texas. Up there, there are two kinds of golf courses. If it is a city course in a small town, the city was looking for a place to dump their processed sewer water. Irrigating a golf course is a solution . The other type of course is one built by the local farmers out in a field so they don't have to travel to play. That Canyon Lake course would be an example of that. Maintenance is by volunteers. These golf courses reminded of of those things. They fall under the category of "just happy to have a place to hit the ball."

That second course was abandoned, right? On course 3 you were a bit harsh on Miguel - he said he couldn't find any RECENT reviews - it's not like he didn't look. But thanks for playing those for us! I remember playing near San Diego and finding the bunker bees - apparently they are harmless. That didn't stop me moving my ball out of their way though.

Makes me really appreciate the muni course that has 4 people take care of it a lot. Its a bit swampy when its rained recently but my goodness it isn't anywhere near this bad

I use to live in Canyon Lake. I laughed out loud when you mentioned you couldn’t put the markers in any deeper. The entire area here has a few inches of soil then thick rock!

Those lines on the green are likely from a recent verti-cut. I’m guessing those greens are Bermuda and they’re trying to harden them up or it’s part of normal maintenance plan. Verti-cutting is different from punching. You use a mower with vertically teeth and dig into the thatch layer, rip it up to the surface to be blown off or collected. Also…there typically is a separate entity at the course that cleans the bathrooms, but one of the assistant superintendents typically unlocks the bathrooms in the morning for the crew and golfers. Cleaning is only done a couple times a week. The more you know 🌈 Enjoyed the video! As someone who’s been in agronomy for 7 years, this was hard to watch without cringing.

I have actually played that Lakeside course near Canyon Lake. Grew up in San Antonio. It was much better back then, lol. Great series, these are a fun watch!

I wish you would come down and play the Louisiana State University course on Nicholson and Burbank. It doesn't look like it but it's open and they're charging $35 to play there. The University just abandoned the course and moved the college team to the nice U Club down the road. You should come put the on blast.

The part of the video where you were at Lakeside Country Blub in Canyon Lake, TX was painful to watch. I thought I've played at some bad courses, but that one takes the cake!

Canyon Lake Country club: In 1995, I had my collage graduation party, in the second floor, Main Dining Room. So sad, how this place has gone down hill. The dining room used to be great; miss the people who used to work there, the course was nice too, in the early 90's!

If you come to Alabama, The Links of Tuscaloosa is an absolute must for this series as well as cahaba falls country club!

Frog rock in Hammonton nj. Worst in summer. They let the fairways get so long you'll lose your ball hitting it straight down the middle. They have problems keeping grass so they over water and let it over grow.

I became a Pro in the 70s ... The first course is Far from qualifying as a Top worse course ... neglected Yes. Maintenace that do not know what they are doing or how to do it > Yes. The cart while used & beat up a bit ... offered a couple of features not usually offered on rentals. As for rakes > maybe they have a no replacement policy after somebody steal them. The course around Canyon Lake ... I grew up in South Texas ... we call that Cow Pasture Golf > without the cows actually getting in the way. The reason us Texas guys hit the ball well and play links courses well is because windy and dried fairway are fairly normal ... but at least most places have playable greens > that place didn't have greens ... they had 18 Ground Zero Disaster Zones with a flagstick. You drank the water ... that took guts! BTW > since when does the San Antonio Airport rent out cars with Florida plates ? California course ... what did they charge? Think of it as putting greens with hazards. Back in the 80s I did play a course in Rock Springs ... (sand greens) and it put the Rock in Rock Springs, and I mean rocks everywhere ...

If ever back in this area, near Boner-ventura, Ft Laud has a FREE 3 hole par 3 course with real grass run by Ft Laud park & rec. It also has practice area for both short game & full swing BUT the area is in transitional neighborhood so its best to go early AM & avoid the tougher crowds.

As a new player, I love bad courses, fairways don’t matter to me

First time watcher. I was TOTALLY shocked. That first course, is literally right down the road from me. I play it all the time. I love that course.

The second gave me two different vibes. It felt so dead and empty, seemed like you were in Chernobyl; then it also felt like a scene from a horror film where the golfer is killed at one point lol
