WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange spoke publicly today for the first time since he was released in June from a London prison. Assange addressed the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in France about his 14-year legal saga after publishing evidence of U.S. war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. Assange was freed after pleading guilty to a U.S. charge of obtaining and disclosing national security material. Democracy Now! broadcasts the first time the world has heard Julian Assange's voice since he was arrested in 2019. "I eventually chose freedom over unrealizable justice after being detained for years and facing a 175-year sentence with no effective remedy," says Assange. "I am not free today because the system worked. I am free today, after years of incarceration, because I pled guilty to journalism."

Incorrect. They didn't try to torture him. They did torture him. 5 years in solitary confinement alone locked in a small cold tiny cell 23 hours a day every day for 5 long years IS TORTURE. He may now suffer from PTSD a mental health disorder they killed his mind and spirit he suffered a stroke he may now suffer panic attacks depression and anxiety and suicide ideas we don't know what they have done to him.

This is a man who committed no crime. As he said, he is only guilty of journalism. But he was detained in a high security prison for years and it nearly broke him. You can hear that in his voice. Incredible international pressure had to be applied to set him free. When freedom came at long last, it was with the condition of agreeing to never investigate his own incarceration. Materials relating to his time at Belmarsh are denied him. What world do we live in? Julian is a famous person. In his unjust plight, his fame was of some help. How many nobodys are being treated like he has been?

I recall only one time that Britain refused to be a puppet that was back in the 1960s. When the then UK Govt decided to not send British Troops to Vietnam in support of the U.S. for once listening to the British public in the 1960s to not send British troops to Vietnam. Vietnam was a very unpopular war with the public in Canada, US, Europe, Australia and the UK at the time. Other than that rare occasion. Like rest of Europe more or less they do whatever U.S. says. I think there is a word for it its called Empire. U.S. has an Empire and UK and Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand along with Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Phillipines are under it. British had an Empire once too although more direct rule. U.S. prefers a more informal indirect rule Empire. Either way history proves Empire's are not good for individual freedom and human rights. Just ask the people of India regarding the British Empire in their country?

Diese Art von Führung des westlichen Bündnisses durch die USA braucht, auch in den anderen Staaten des westlichen Bündnisses, kein Mensch. Die negativen Beispiele des Verhaltens der USA nehmen anscheinend an allen Fronten ständig weiter zu, auch hier sollte die Weltöffentlichkeit von den USA und deren Verhaltensvorbild abstinent leben.

I'm glad this channel is finally doing the right thing in this man's case but I also remember them being part of the chorus that was screaming for his head only a few years ago because he revealed true information that 'helped' the 'wrong' candidate. Truth is truth so please be better in future because Dumbocracy Now is extremely guilty/complicit in what happened to him & it's utterly shameful.
