I Prefer Using Primes over Zoom Lenses - Here's why 

Use both? When you can move, use primes. When you can't move, use zooms. Simple as that.

I agree with your point. I also like to shoot prime lenses and my go to kit has been 24mm, 35, 50mm and 80mm. Shooting for many years with these primes has really helped to understand the different focal lengths and when to use each one. At this moment though I have 24-120mm zoom which covers those four focal lengths that I love to use but keeps my camera kit more accessible since I don’t have to switch lenses. Although I have a zoom lens attached to my camera most of my shots are shot with 35mm focal length. I might shoot only for example 35mm focal length for a day, but have an option to switch to different focal length easily and I don’t have to carry my other lenses with me. I don’t change my focal length for every photo or zoom if I can walk to better angle. My point is that nowadays I use zoom lens as a different “prime lenses”. I hope you get my point. All in all I really enjoy shooting primes and I make my zoom like its prime lens with different focal lengths at different times.

Certainly an interesting and thought provoking perspective. I'm a Fuji shooter and have 12mm and 23mm prime lenses. However, I have the 18-55 which came with my first camera and I'm guessing but would imagine 80% of my photos are shot with the 18-55 and the majority of the rest with the 50-230. I just like the flexibility and have never even considered a style. I virtually never use the 23 (as it's covered by the 18-55) unless i just pop it on and take it for a walk. Then it just frustrates me as I can't change the focal length if required. I usually take two cameras (Fuji XS10 and Fuji XH1) with the above two zoom lenses but sometimes add a third camera (Fuji XT1) and the 12mm Samyang. Prefer not to change lenses when I'm out. So, sorry but completely opposite philosophy.

I only use prime Lenses, but I would not buy a Leica Q camera, too expensive and I do not like the 28mm focal length ! I use two 61 megapixels Cameras and Lenses of the focal Length 14mm, 21mm, 24mm, two 35mm, 55mm, 65mm Macro, 85mm, 110mm Macro, 135mm and 500mm. Sometimes I take only one Camera with one prime Lens, but most often I take two Cameras and two Lenses (or more Lenses). It is a great pleasure to use prime Lenses and in combination with manual focusing, manual shutter time, manual aperture and manual ISO, then it is a great joy to do photography !

Love you aspect of „fun“. YES! It is not my business and I love the personal challenge to try my best using the X100 only to get a „good“ shot. Just for me. ;-)

I have a trip planned end of summer to Yellowstone Park in the U.S. I have a Q2, TOO...I find I let t sit home too much as I'm somehow scared to death it will get sensor dust esp. when it gets very windy outside...even it's weathered sealed. Anyway you make some great points here. I'm gonna use it as my primary camera on the trip...a bit swayed here thx to you. 😄Have a couple Nikons. including the ZF,...well you mentioned if you don't get the shot...doesn't matter. In my case I think I'll just have the Nikon in the car, with a good zoom on it really only if 28mm is just TOO far away even I know I can crop in a bit with the 47 meg sensor. otherwise I'll mostly stick with my Q2 for many of YOUR reasons...well done.

I got a Voigtlander 27mm pancake for the fun reason. I tried out manual focus on my zoom lens and thought it was really fun. Then when I got the Voigtlander obviously it got even more fun because it’s not a focus by wire, but a real super smooth and high quality manual experience. Every time I hit focus it’s like I won a mini game inside of my camera, and it’s really rewarding.

POV: For travelling a zoom is better as 1. you don't know what to expect and 2. often you have no chance to return to the location. Otherwise I prefer primes. And strangely my main reasoning pro-prime is seldom mentioned in these discussions: let's say you will most likely mainly use one focal length range on your tour wth should you walk around with a bulky zoom (especially if you mainly going to use the shorter end)? For me primes are streamlined in a physical and mental sense. I should add that basically I hate to carry and change several lenses - usually I just grab one (prime) lens and concentrate on its character.
