I punctured... and FIXED it!! [First ever puncture on my KTM 790 adv, rear tire plugged]

First, but probably not last puncture I have ever experienced on my motorcycle!
Nothing dramatic, could have delivered my bike straight to the workshop and have the tire replaced but decided I might as well try and fix it so I am more prepared in case it happens somewhere I cannot ask for help so easily!

Thank you for sharing this! I bought a tyre repair kit myself when preparing for my recent Norway adventure. I had put on a new set of Pirelli Rally STR, which are quite soft and have a reputation of being puncture prone, so I thought I'd better stop relying on just being lucky all the time. Anyway, I got to Lillehammer, had a great time on the TET, drove up to the peak of Blåhø and literally touched the clouds, and continued up to Lesja before I turned back into Sweden and home again. I got a couple of hundred gigabytes of GoPro material but no puncture, so I am still just as inexperienced with tyre repairs as I was before, but at least now I have the equipment. Plus, I have seen your nice demo of how to use it 👍🙂

Not being a bike rider now a days but a car driver when allowed I find small jobs are better dealt with as an adhoc maintenance alternative with of course a back up by a tire specialist but its a learning curve we should all go through as driver and riders. Cheers Runa.

Good repair, however this only good for tubeless tyres. You have spoked wheels so the spokes must have been sealed inside by tape. My spokes are not sealed so I must use tubes, so to repair I must remove wheel and patch tube. KTM have made it easier for you, nice. Here in Thailand I do not look forward to a puncture, although having said that, in the first few months I did have a puncture, but in a well populated area and as it was near dark a local put my bike in the back of his pickup and took me back to my hotel, and although Sunday next morning located a shop to do the repair for me, every village in Thailand has a motorbike mechanic, it’s great.

In Canada we call these tire repair strips "bacon strips" The first tool you used is called a reamer...you can not just screw it in, you have to bore the hole with it to make the hole large enough to use the second tool...however, your tires I think might have tubes...and are not specific to that type of hole repair...could be wrong. However, bacon strips are the best thing for tire repair...on tubeless tires...on cars, trucks and bikes. good for you for trying.

Hi Runa. Great video. To ansver some of your questions. Yes you are supposed to release the air in the tire. When you have manage to get the first tool all the way inn, the trick is to pull the tool out and in some time without any turn movement. Then you will get correct hole size for the plug. Be sure to have enough of the plug on the inside of the tire when you done. 👍

Your reamer tool is different than any I've seen. Is it knurled? Either way if there's still some pressure in the tire try to keep as much in as possible so the tire has some force for when you insert the bacon strip. Ie, have your plug ready to go, pull out the reamer, and insert the plug asap. Made a good go of it! Probably just as good as anyone else that's doing it for the first time, including myself 🤣.
@OffSheGoesADV
@OffSheGoesADV 2 года назад
It is kind of knurled, it looks like a strange drill. And thats a good advice, to have the strip ready and plug it right after drilling the hole! ... and put the glue on the opposite side from what I did, what a mess 😆 At least I know sort of what to do now!
@user-uk3ky6qc2n
@user-uk3ky6qc2n 2 года назад
@@OffSheGoesADV that's interesting. I tried looking up why but came up empty handed. It seems the ones marketed to motorcycles have the corkscrew style and regular tires have the straight reamer. Maybe I've been doing it wrong all these years 🤷😅. Are you on the advrider forums? There's a wealth of information on there. Be careful though it can lead to a lighter wallet very quickly 🤣🤣🤣

Most of those repair kits come with instructions, some do say to actually make the puncture larger. You do this by pushing and pulling in and out the tool. As said spoked wheels have likely a tube, and those need to be done differently.
@OffSheGoesADV
@OffSheGoesADV 2 года назад
I did try to make the whole bigger, drilled it over and over, ran it in and out 😊 As you can see from the video I did read the instructions. And no worries, KTM 790 runs tubeless tires.

Wow, you are smart for having a tubeless tire kit with you. However, once you patch it the way you did perfectly, then you are good. I have used them on car tires/tyres many times. Once done it is good forever especially the low tire tread on that tire. The tire was flat, so there was no hurry when to put in the plug or file it bigger. flat is flat. 😀But you could have put the compressor on it to inflate it and give the tire back pressure to insert the plug. Put your finger over the hole so it inflates and stiffens. Then your ready for the plug. At least you did it yourself. 😍
@OffSheGoesADV
@OffSheGoesADV Год назад
I actually did end up riding a few days in the plugged tire, cause the shop did not have a suitable tire to replace it with. And it was fine indeed, I was a bit sceptical but it is good to know it is solid 😊 And yes, def should have kept some air in there/inflated a little bit to make it easier to insert the plug 😂 Now I know!
@JohnSmith-uy7sv
@JohnSmith-uy7sv Год назад
@@OffSheGoesADV I've never had to do that to my 94, 1500 honda Goldwing. But I have the kit and the other smaller compressor from you know who. It fits in your hand and works great. I think even I might have been confused by the difficulty inserting the plug and seeing the tire collapse for a few minutes. 😉 Thanks for the response.
@JohnSmith-uy7sv
@JohnSmith-uy7sv Год назад
@@OffSheGoesADV Oops, and you can also, just push the plug with the tool against the hole and block most of the air coming out. When the tire is firm enough for you, then just push. Simple. 😉

It think it looking great. I have never done a puncture repair. I have to test it some time when its time to change the tyres. Probably one could have done the hole little bigger with the drill, then it would have been easier to plug it. On the other hand, as long as it works it works.
