I purchased a 1930s German large-format camera: Mentor Studio Reflex. And then I fixed it!

I found an old German large-format camera on eBay. I believe it is from the 1930s. The slow speeds we partially stuck, and it was missing film holders. And like all cameras from eBay, it needed some care!
I fixed it and made film holders for it. I still need to improve the holders, but I took a few pictures. And it kinda works!

I’m mostly now working with medium and large format reflex camera, love them for what they are, and I’m just not that eagle eyed anymore. A large ground glass makes focusing so easy. And I’m also a big fan of those old f/3.5 Tessars. As you know and mentioned, the Mentor’s shutter are quite different to the Graflex ones. It’s reassuring to hear that they’re nevertheless as easy to fix. Thanks a lot for this great video.

9x12 cm was a very common film size, so film holders for this format should not be difficult to find. I even found some at the Finnish Kamerastore.
@ShootOnFilm
@ShootOnFilm Месяц назад
It's not the film size but the external shape of the film holder. It is a totally different outer size -- standard 4x5 and 9x12 holders are the same external size but this is much smaller. It also needs to slide into rails that are missing from the standard holders. I have plenty of 4x5 and 9x12 holders, but they don't fit -- or didn't fit. I actually decided to modify this camera and build a new back to it :-) Now they all fit -- both 4x5 and 9x12.

3D printers are quite cheap and easy to use these days, no reason to pay someone else for the printing service when you can get a usable printer for a couple of hundreds. The best thing about 3D-printing is to be able to get a prototype in your hands almost instantly and for very little expense so you can see if the design works and improve it in further iterations as needed.

@@Murgoh I'm a software engineer. I spend my day with my face in a computer screen trying to integrate systems and figuring out why things don't work. Today, we can't escape the computer screens, but we can look for places here and there to avoid them. This is one place. I can put my face into a screen to design something and then disengage. I can't imagine I would enjoy 3D printing as a hobby in itself and I can't imagine I will need so many widgets and tchotchkes over my life that I could justify the time to learn 3D printing and deal with the mechanical aspects of the printers (I hate my lawn mower for similar reasons). I also cannot imagine wanting to design and print anything grander than an occasional widget or tchotchke. Old cameras let me tinker and film gets me away from the computer screen. I still do some digital photography and I digitize my negatives, but I prefer even in photography to look for places to minimize the screen time. I should probably also start reconsidering my youtube addiction.

Congrats for repair ! is it a 9x12, or a 12x12 (== you can do also landscape by 'rotating' the back) Wouldn't it be not simpler/cheaper/... converting/exchanging the camera back to use of modern 4x5 or 9x12 film holders ? I consider to do this for a tiny 9x12 from the 1920s later the year. Ok there I plan a shift of the focal plane by a few millimeter back... which to be honest does not harm "the" reflex view finder, as it has none. BTW I: I have aligned myself Toyo and Linhof (with adapter to Toyo) lens boards to simply any lens (including pinhole) exchange. Do you consider to align on e.g. graflex boards == add an adapater to the mentor and remount the f3.5 tessar ? BTW II: I might have even looked on the same camera you bought, despite I was/am not yet ready to buy a pre-post war mentor 9x12, 12x12 or 13x18 yet,. Having so many other camera gear construction work to work on still. But I watch the market ...;-) My dream would be 2.7 165mm Tessar... bacause it covers just 9x12 (not 4x5). unfortunately they are very rare and expensive

@@ShootOnFilm I was contemplating putting a Horseman back on my medium format Mentor 1926 (I also only have one double sided sheet film holder) but will now rather modify a few Horseman roll film back. The 1926 has the advantage that the groundglass plane can be shifted (that was originally to account for colour plates, there are no more colour plates being made, but that feature is still useful). That way the camera stays original for when I find that elusive original roll film holder… The f/2.7 Tessars are even better. I would expect the 165mm to cover 4x5.
