Psych nursing is a joke. Just pill pushing

i know i'm a year late but seeing this comment made my heart happy because ppl make it seem like you have to start out as a bedside nurse in order to be a successful nurse or make money. I'm a new grad nurse and I've done student nurse extern ship on a medsurg floor to just gain some experience before I graduate because clinical wasn't the best and I HATED it. that's when I found out bedside nursing is not for me and I want to only do positions that does not involve bedside or is not as demanding as the standard bedside care like OR or PACU etc.

Working as casual nurse or different career is the way to go. The culture, stress and burnout in nursing is not worth it. Most nurses who don't balance their work and life often end up with Chronic diseases and substance abuse issues. Always remember that we work to live, not live to work. God bless.

I completely agree. It isn't worth it. I think at some point in the future I definitely want to just go PRN or part time. It can be too much full time, mentally and physically. Thank you so much for commenting! :)

I did two months of beside (med-surg) during orientation as an LVN and learned very quickly that I would not make it long-term. So I switched to Psych and now I’m a year in. Currently back in school for my RN and not sure if I want to stay in Psych or do Nursery, Public Health, or OR.

Yes, it doesn't take long to realize if you like certain environments more or less in nursing! That's awesome you made the switch! It's so nice that we can switch specialties so easily in nursing. If one doesn't work out we can always try another. Keep trying until you find your place! You have some great options. Thank you for watching and commenting!

@@toniannwilliams1753 I told them that I wasn’t able to care for more than 4 patients and I felt unsafe all the way around. Plus, I felt like I needed a way out of Med-Surg. It was too much for me personally.

@@therealmt same! I know someone has to do it, but the med-surg environment is just not for me either. Thank you!

Yes, that's how it is. You get floated to areas where you never orientated, never work before. If something goes wrong, they don't care about your lack of experience. They just needed a body to fill in the blank.

Exactly. It is really unfortunate. We are just numbers. I hope it changes eventually, but I doubt it because healthcare is such a business. It's all about money. Thank you for watching and commenting!

One of the biggest reasons I see my students quit nursing is absolute and complete burn out. Nurses have a tough job, "great nurses" have an even tougher job due to being overworked. #zerotoheroprogram #seeyouinclass

Yes, it can be very easy to become burnt out due to being overworked/understaffed which seems very common unfortunately.

Girl, I also quit bed side nursing. The pandemic wore me out. I am now a Quality Assurance Specialist Registered Nurse. I do not miss bedside nursing. I'm in school for my masters and my goal is to open my nursing agency and one or two group homes. I gave 14 years to bedside nursing and I am done. Good luck with your career.

This is why I'm going straight into prison nursing and not doing bed side at all. I get told all the time I'm making a mistake making this choice.... My response is that it's a mistake going into a role that I will definitely leave. That is wasting my time and the hospitals time. I'm going straight into a job I know I will love. Everyone says I will 'de-skill'... But my answer to that is, is that I know I want to be a prison nurse so I will learn prison nursing skills when I work there. If I decide to change my career path in the future, then I will be able to get into other training sessions that are held ALL the time for free in the hospital or whatever position I choose. I'm so happy you have decided what it is YOU want ❤

I could not agree more Faye! People make it seem like if you go into a specialty right after school you’re missing out on a lot. I completely agree that if you know you want to work in a certain specialty you should just go for it. It’s miserable working a job you know you won’t like. If later on you decide you want to change specialties, you CAN, and you will learn what you need to learn. That won’t make you any less of a good nurse. Thank you so much for watching and commenting Faye!❤️😘

@@ashleyeve6641 Exactly this!! Nurses are sought after EVERYWHERE!! There is so much opportunity to train on each speciality so going into a job you hate for the sake of skills for a job you won't stay in makes no sense to me! Get in the speciality you want and then learn THOSE skills! And exactly, if you find decide to change speciality then you train up in that speciality when the time is right! It's a no brainer! You're very welcome, im always here supporting 🥰 I live watching your journey 🥰

I went to GI lab/endoscopy unit after 5 years of being a bedside nurse. I worked stepdown icu, cardiac telemetry, and medical surgical units. I love my new work place and I don't think I will ever go back to bedside. It helped that my co workers are fun and welcoming. I also decided to go back to school for my nurse practitioner master's degree. My ultimate goal is to be a stay at home/work at home mom. Good luck to you! Life takes you where you need to be. I feel like I wouldn't have changed anything about my nursing career as my experience at bedside helped me learn a lot and gain confidence to move on.

Fellow GI Nurse!! I got so much flack for being young & in GI that I let some nurses pressure me to go working in MICU. After a year there I came right back to GI. Bedside is not for me. My worst day in Endo is better than what I went through in MICU. My anxiety was through the roof nearly everyday. Good experience & no regrets but I’m happy where I’m at.
