That's how you drive on motorways. Don't hog the middle and make it more dangerous for everyone else. How so many bad drivers are allowed on the road is madness. They should put a few hours motorway driving into your test there are so many blind people

Well, he had an office job, but, decided to jack it out of his own free will as he was not too happy with it or possibly bored stiff. Either way, he opted to take this new one on. Good luck to him. Other commentators are just saying the liberties that this Big firm in taking by not paying him his expenses, especially when he had to drive all the way to London and then back home. Not even being given a 1 night accommodation. Firms like that you avoid at all costs.

£500 excess? From a company making thousands off you. The trouble is people accept it and they get away with it. £100 for such a long day and all that hassle is an absolute p**s take. Car Giant can eff off! Better to get a delivery driver job with a supermarket or similar if possible. Good luck with your training 👍

A guy turned up to pick my car up on a foldable electric bike. He came down to Herts on a train from Newcastle and rode the bike from the station. I live in a village with bad transport links so he had the ideal method of travelling around. I'd certainly consider this option if you are going to carry on.

Slightly different but amusing nonetheless. I was at BCA Measham doing a collection during that fuel crisis a few years ago where garages were short on diesel. I got talking to this guy who was also collecting a car and he actually brought his own containers of fuel including petrol as an emergency, as often they had nearly empty tanks at BCA, they drain the fuel for themselves I think.

I did this about 12yrs ago, more or less got a return car coming back. But if not i found a few other guys that worked for the same company, double up with them, so basically if you are going to London and you have no return car, and they are going to Cambridge and they are picking a car to return with, you both goto Cambridge and then onto London, they give you a lift back, and then you do the same for them if they don't have a return car. Great vid as I do the exact same job. Semi retired and gets me out of the house. Best job I’ve ever had, the flexibility and enjoy driving different cars and meeting different people. I calculate each job and so long it’s above £10 per hour door to door then it’s worth it. However I try to avoid long journeys (100 plus miles) and electric cars I thought about making videos and reviewing the cars I drive, but the negative comments just puts me off

I was a trade plater for just under 20 years. These really are not the best terms in the industry that you are working on. I've never worked for a company where you pay an excess for damage or pay penalties for being late and I've worked for some really bad trade plate companies! Rate of pay is also not the best, it'll really hurt you financially when something goes wrong and things do go wrong. One tip, if you travel to the South East area of England, get a Network Rail card. It's a third of the price of rail travel (certain conditions apply). I used to make the cost of the card back in 2 or 3 trips and it can go as far as Exeter on one line.

I looked into doing this (or similar) and ended up not doing a single job. The driver agency made me jump through ridiculous hoops to qualify to do it and then took the piss massively as I was clearly being used as a last resort, are rather not being used. Waited nearly a week to hear from them then get a call out of the blue asking me to me to be 30 miles away at 8am the next morning where I would meet an inspector and a team of drivers that drive the inspected car to wherever. That's 60 mile round trip and could only be practically done by car at my own expense. Then I get a call at 7am the following morning saying the job was cancelled. A full week later I get a call at 8am out of the blue asking me to be 44 miles away in one hour, so an 88 mile round trip and again had to be at my expense by own car. That's taking the piss but I dropped all the days plans and got in the car. 15 minutes later and ten miles down the road they call again and cancel again. I asked them to take me off their books and delete my data. Final piss take? I started getting dodgy messages asking me if I was still looking for work as they had excellent opportunities for me, they were scams. The agency had clearly leaked my personal and private data.

Some years ago, I, too, thought of earning some 'easy money' shunting cars for a well known auction company.... you know the one....Big Con Artists. I was duly invited to their 'induction' where I quickly learned that this 'employment' was the nearest thing to modern day slavery. I politely left before the end (along with a number of other naeve-a-tees) & was so incensed, I wrote directly to their massively remunerated CEO of the day pointing out the obscene disparity between the 'worker drone' payments & her eye-watering salary. It won't come of any surprise to learn that I am still awaiting a response

Like some others replying, it's not easy. I did about 12 years operating out of an old airfield near Bicester - massive set up, delivering and collecting demo cars as well as some new lease cars. Covered the whole UK including Northern Ireland; several trips to Inverness and back in the same day. You have to be self motivated, independant and have a sense of humour - rocking up for a collection in the middle of nowhere to find no car, it's an abort, find your way home, you have to larf. Not so bad in the early days, averaging 3-400 miles a day and 10-12 hr days, but gradually ended up more like 12-14 hr days. Enjoyed it in a funny sort of way, the sense of satisfaction planning your day, but not easy by any stretch.

Thanks for sharing. Dealerships/auction sites/resellers are all looking for the most cost effective way of collecting and returning vehicles. Hiring teams of drivers eats into their already slender margins….esp. during off-peak periods where the volume of vehicles to move is so low they have drivers sitting around twiddling their thumbs. This is where you come in! You assume all the risk and they get away with paying you less than minimum wage - because they can argue you’re ’not working’ whilst making your own way home. The old model had a pick up driver who would collect 3-4 drivers once they’d completed their drops - take them back to base before doing the same again. Wasn’t uncommon to do several drops in a day. Minimal expenses as a result. Having to pay to get home - like in this vid - is a big issue. You can easily get stuck somewhere if public transport lets you down. Not to mention the price. This job is a good laugh but only if things don’t go wrong. It’s more suited to the semi-retired and those doing it for beer money and something to fill the day. As long as you make it work for you - that’s what matters. Just need a bit of good fortune too! Good luck!!

I was trade plating for nearly 20 years.There are a few smaller companies dotted about that you can work for as self employed but will factor in train/bus fares & taxis as well as estimating how many hours you will be out of the house & paying at a set rate per hour. Admittedly these are few in numbers but they do exist. The likes of BCA & these new companies that do everything off an app will not pay good money for the hours you put in.

The seller has already taken pictures before the dealers make their offer. The photos I take are to confirm the condition of the vehicle, both before and after I've driven it. The reason the dealer waits for my photos to release payment, is to have a 3rd party verify the condition of the vehicle matches what they've been told and that there has been no new damage between when they agreed to buy it and my collection.
@OH2023-cj9if

That makes you legally liable in any dispute! Not daft are they. If if was photos to prove you had not damaged it, you would not need to supply those pictures to anyone. Are you driving on a trade plate as doing this on your own policy would be extremely expensive and relying on other policies can backfire. I definitely wouldn't be working for that company.

It,s a cheap way car dealers use instead of transporting a car. Break it down 150 mile job transport be around £320-£380 on a truck , trade platers charge £1 mile plus fuel so be £190/£200. personally £90 for what you did is peanuts , but if your happy with that then it's ok.
@deans6571

I would say £90 for the day is pretty bad!! I'm training to be a driving instructor and my franchise school allows me to charge £80 for a 2 hour lesson!
@RobGoesRacing
@RobGoesRacing 6 месяцев назад
I've got my ADI part 1 booked for the 11th April 😉👍 Out of interest, what area are you and which franchise are you training with? Mine is suggesting £40 an hour, but others in the area are £38, so I wouldn't want to price myself out. I'll be going onto pink badge, but will charge less during that period. It's not £90 for the day though, it's £90 for 3 hours. You don't earn an income travelling between lessons, same as I don't earn anything travelling back here. As I said, I could have lined up another job, and if I were to do this full time, I would have.

I did this a few years ago, only had to use public transport twice as I always had a lift back from another driver, a part ex or a hire car waiting at the customers house. Decent job at the time, could make quite a bit at it but zero hours no job security.

Interesting job, and probably quite fun - but what a shocking rate of pay. It feels like they've just priced it from time arriving with the customer to the dropoff point.

I would not drive this car as a self employed contractor unless DVLA confirmed it had been re taxed for 6 months or more. Tax is none transerable. The penalty for diving like this untaxed is points on your license. Customer may cancel the tax online for a refund without the V5 document. You need trade plates to avoid re taxing and to be on the company insurance. No way a company will pay private car insurance without a 4 million policy just to pick a few cars up.
@oddities-whatnot
@oddities-whatnot 6 месяцев назад
I did this for a few years but had trade plates supplied at no cost from a prestige car dealer. Decent company, decent job, did well out of it but it was zero hours and although I usually got enough work, when applying for a mortgage it made things much harder so I needed a permanent job.
@sgsuper1150

Why would it need to be taxed for. 6 months? If it's same day expiry it's taxed for your journey. If you use trade plates, the plates are on the insurance database.

I commend you for your work ethic but I think the amount you were paid sucks. Almost 12 hours for £100 = £8.33 an hour gross, less return expenses and tax, plus the risk of that insurance excess. Might as well call it somewhere etween £4.50 and £5.50 an hour net. Disgraceful. Sign up for Deliveroo or similar in your local area. You won't be putting down a deposit on a Tesla but in comparison, it's a no brainer.

Thank you for sharing. The £100 seems a bit stingy to be honest especially as you have to fund your own way home. If the train was the only option it would quickly negate your days earnings. Can’t believe they don’t even offer reasonable travel expenses.

£100 is absolute peanuts for all that, I’m nit sure how you got all the way back for £9 - £9 would get me about 5 miles in an Uber. It’s the kind of job that is only for new arrivals to the country- ie the ones who are easily exploited. The worst thing is that you can’t even get the car back early so you can get home early, I bet they don’t even give you a lift to the coach station
