I'm an oil painter, it's my passion and love. Being an artist makes me truly happy. But now I'm also a UX Designer, and even though I enjoy it and I am kind of obsessed with it, I never tell people that I'm a UX Designer, cuz it's not who I am. I think the same goes for you, it's okay to not make our careers our identity. We are more than a job. Wishing the best for you!
@@LindaQueLeenda Agreed, people define others by their careers, and because of that - people end up choosing careers they don't want to choose - just for their social status or perhaps the money. But I think in life that stuff doesn't really matter. Indeed, their jobs don't define who they are inside. That's what matters the most.
Dang! Your experience is exactly what my current journey is. I have been the sole UX Designer for the company and I have been looking for jobs 3 months after landing the job. Educating the PM and stakeholders is absolutely the toughest thing and design only occupies a little room. I have my lows and can’t complain much because of the salary…. But it isn’t always about money. Congrats to your new journey and hopefully my opportunity will come sooner!
Congratulations on your newest opportunity! This is definitely an inspiration for me personally I am currently having that burn out stage in my newest job and wanting to launch into UX/UI design as a career. ❤️
I went from graphic designer to UX designer with a bachelors degree in graphic design and a masters in UX design. UX design has to be your passion. If its not your passion the job can become too much and very stressful very fast. You also need think skin, a lot of people will criticize your work, that’s too make the work better. It’s not too Hurt your feeling but to help you come up with a better design. Any job in the design industry is very stressful, having a passion for it helps coup with the stress.
hello! I actually am currently applying to university and I don't know if I should do a graphic design major or just a design major because when I finish I want to do a masters in UX design or product design too so what would you recommend?
@@maggieshahine2201, I would recommend getting a degree in design of some sort. If you are going for a masters in UX then you’ll want and need a formal education in graphic design. UX design is rooted in graphic design and uses a lot of design rules that you’ll learn from graphic design. As a graphic design student you’ll also will take a course in UX before you graduate with 4 year degree. When I was in college, my major was graphic design and a part of my education was taking a semester in UX design. That’s really how I was introduced into UX design and found that I really loved it. I then searched for a university that had a master degree program in UX design and I found that a lot of them had a masters program for it. I ultimately choose MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art). I learned a lot about UX design; the course is about 1 year and 3 months long. Their acceptance rate is around 58% I believe, they are selective so you’ll need a strong portfolio. I had a little of graphic design mixed with UX design that made up my portfolio and ultimately got me accepted. Best of luck.
I'm new to UX/UI Design and I just started taking some courses on the fundamentals and enrolling in courses that I can learn how to use software and all that. When I saw the caption for this video, I was scared because it seemed like you didn't like the role. But after watching the video, it's a problem with the team you had to work with and not the profession which is a relief. Thank you Charli Cheung
literally listen to what happened to you makes me think of recent situation that had feeling myself a failure, while struggling with the sense that I'm stuck and not growing as a professional in the UX field... But listening to you, and seeing how everything went through gives me confort, and makes me feel enthusiastic... thank you for creating this content 💖💖
Thank you so much for sharing ! I can relate 100%. I made my studies 99% of my identity and when I graduated/worked 2 years in my field. I was exhausted and mentally lost. Love your transparency and vibe ! Have a great day 🌞
It's cool to see how self-aware you are of your own feelings! Something you said really resonated with me.. how your first two years of getting into UX was basically drowning your life with UX only. I feel like I'm in that position right now, I just got my first ever fulltime UX job last week. I'm so grateful to be in this field that I love so much. My life has now been consumed with learning everything about UX, every YT video, every Medium post, every podcast. It was interesting to see your perspective on how it takes over your identity, because that's literally me right now and I don't feel it as negative.
Thank you for your story. Glad you were able to find something that is making you happy! I’m very fresh to the ux/ui world and am itching to apply to positions, but still got to work on my portfolio. Understanding company culture and their values are extremely important to me and my general well being. So this was very refreshing to hear!
I am so glad you shared this, I literally had almost the exact same experience. All of this happened while I was planning my wedding AND house hunting! It was with a small agency and I was a senior art director and it was terrible. I started looking for a new job within the first month. So scary and stressful.
I'm so happy to come across your video! I've been in my senior design job for 1 year and 3 months now and I feel super stagnant. I just started my job hunt, which is the most anxiety filled and emotionally stressful thing ever!! But I know I need to do it in order to grow, get out of my comfort zone and get to the next stage of my career. Thank you so much for sharing your journey :)
Charli I love your ending thoughts about how grateful and fulfilled you are. I can tell you are a beautiful soul. You are striving to become better and are reaching new goals. I aspire to be like you one day. I’m currently in a rough spot in my career where I dropped out of grad school and thinking of getting into UX. I feel scared and nervous and even when you were describing your feelings of unhappiness in your last position that’s how I felt during grad school. But seeing you overcome these challenges just help me to know it really does get better. So THANK YOU for this video. I will continue to believe in myself and be proud for being brave and trying something new.
Thanks for sharing. Im going through a similar situation to the low point you hit in your career and hearing about how things went for you was helpful.
Thank you so much for sharing Charli. 🙏🏻 I am now in the exact same situation as what you have experienced with your previous job. How you have overcome this journey gives me so much strength to apply it on my own. Best of luck with your new role 😊💫
Thank you so much for sharing your story. We can often feel like our career defines us when it's really just part of what we do. Congratulations on realizing that you needed a change and allowing yourself to achieve something that makes you happy.❤️
I thought I was alone! But it seems like there is someone here with a similar story! I'm glad you got through the hard part I hope I can succeed too, thank you very much.
Thank you for sharing your experience and feeling. It is awesome and I totally relate to that. As a senior designer and a lead I feel UX/UI design is a really hard role. It is not only the design. Some company culture can make your work extremely hard and meritless. Designers are often passionate people and they love what they do - this is a double blade sword and can hurt ourselves so much. I often tell myself to detach from what I do hopefully this could be helpful to you. Congrats for the new role. It sounds they have great teams and culture. Good luck.
Thanks for sharing Charli! It’s very much what I am going through at this moment. I agree with you that we have to find a balance to keep our sanity and maintain relationships healthy around us.
I am looking for opportunities in UI/Ux and I am a complete fresher, even though I don’t have any significant experience I could totally relate to you as I recently had a bad experience with a company. So your experience inspires me to keep moving forward & not to give up. I have a long journey ahead that being said I have a lot of self-reflecting to do. So thanks for sharing your experience :D
Thanks so much for this video. I just quit my job due to burn out at my previous company and am now currently job hunting. The process can be disheartening so it's really nice to hear your experience.
Thank you for sharing! I'm glad that you are happy now. I had bad experience last year, too. I accepted an offer and when I start working I found that the job indeed is for juniors, it was really hard to take the decision and quit bc as you said I didn't want to be a quitter. So, I worked their for a year I joined different projects and worked really hard as a senior (regardless of the job description), built strong relationships, and when I quit by the end of the year I found better job. I wrote this to say don't lose your hope!
I always say the pandemic was both a blessing and curse at the same time. I was mentally tired due to starting work start out of college. Didn't like my job and I took the time to rediscover myself. I'm so excited to start my new job next Monday and start this new journey. I'm so happy for you. ♡ Self-love is very important.
Omg I’m literally going through the same thing with my fiancé and finding a new house. I’ve been a graphic designer for years transitioning to UX Designer and building my portfolio from current and past projects and it’s a lot. I totally felt this and glad my spirit guided me here because it was inspiring and gave me hope.
Thank you sooo much for sharing your story! I had the exact same experience after being so passionate about my product design job. I eventually quit after one and a half years of being there and turned towards my hobbies and travels. My bf said that I became much more happier. I’m slowly getting back to designing and looking for jobs but I’m trying to not stress too much. Glad to hear someone had a similar experience 🤍
I also work in UX and recently went through something similar. It's great to hear about someone else's experience and not feel so alone in it. Thank you for sharing, this really helped me.
Congrats Charli! Thanks for sharing this journey, I am going through a very similar experience, and it's encouraging to hear your story! I am happy to see that you made the decision, best luck with the new role and your UX career!
Commenting to help boost in algorithm! Stories like these are so important. Portfolios and case studies are often shiny and polished, but people and their journeys are never that perfect! As someone new to the design field (new grad last yr) its stories like these that REALLY give me confidence (: thanks so much for this great video. a light in the middle of my job searching journey. ((Also, as someone doing job hunting-- would LOVE your recs for good interview questions to ask... the stuff you pointed out abt design communicating w dev was so eyeopening to me!! how might I ask a design team for their perspective about that process, yknow?? stuff like that. even if it is more for senior interviews, every bit is so informative!))
Charli just want to say I've been exactly where you are as a fellow product designer as well. No job is really worth our mental health, and being creators and designers - when the excitement wanes from our job and we no longer care as much about the products we work on, it's time to move on. Congrats on facing the new role!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I like the direction and choices you made. You could have gone into so many different directions. You have wise internal instincts.
Thank you so much for the video. Surprisingly, I am now in the same situation as you were and I am considering leaving and also doubting myself... I don't know if I should be looking for a new job opportunity where I can be confident with my abilities as a UIUX designer. I got courage now.
Thanks for sharing, I felt quite similar to your experience although I am a solo ux designer in the team. Those negative emotions I tried to surpress slowly build up and I realize that it is not worth it,I am moving on too, good luck to your new job🎉
Wow, congrats to your new lead position. I’m in almost Carly the same situation now, and it feels really great. You have to go through dark times to appreciate the light side of life. Think of all the bad managers you had and the mean things they did and just be and do exactly the opposite. You’ll do great!
Hey Charli I know what you mean as a designer myself. It's so difficult getting stakeholders to understand the value of the design and see your beyond just output.
Thank you for sharing! I'm earning my google certification in UX Design and I don't always know what to expect or what I'm getting myself into. It's nice to hear someone give their insights, which in turn helps me to have clearer vision of what to expect in this field. I like the bubble information in your video too.
I know this feeling. For the same reason, I also quit my high-paying job as a full-stack developer. After around 1 year of exploring, I came to understand that I'm loving UX design. But whenever I tell people, they think that no one would change from full stack development to a UX role. But the point is not the pay, it's the interest because of which people change their roles. But many don't understand. I understand. Wish you all the best for your future :)
the toughest job of ui/ux designer is not design, it's convincing/educating your team and your boss just what the f is ui and ux, which is not about submitting those damn mockup screens the first week you join the freakin company!!!
I can relate how you're feeling. In my opinion, you really should leave If the working environment is not good for you. Remember your mental health does matter, as much as your physical health. Since workplace is gonna be a big part of our life, having a workplace that can give you a stable and safe environment, providing positive feedback is crucial.
That thumb nail!! I was like whaaaat!! now it makes sense after watching (: Also shout out to myself getting my first official UX interview coming next week😱I am not freaking out and doubting myself at all😂
Curious why did you feel you weren’t being appreciated as a designer in your old company? That would help other designers know what to maybe avoid. Would be helpful if you gave some details
I appreciate your vulnerable expressions about life and work. Your transparency let's me to finally see both the struggles and qualities of becoming a ux designer. I have a degree in teaching, and I am working on my masters in instructional design with an emphasis in ux design. I just started, so the only class that I have completed so far is a web design class in html and css. I was wondering if it would be wiser to get a masters in graphic design (which i would be sure to enjoy more than ID studies) with a ux emphasis?
Everything happens for a good reason. Just wanna say something personal that those hard days can be passed easily by just meeting and seeing our family which nourishes your emotions.
hey, Charli, thanks for your honest video here, here is a small question ,like how you answer why you left your last company these type of things during interview, shall i tell the truth ?? i feel this is a tricky question, but i have not find a good way , wish you all the best in the future~
would a ux design be right for me, I am a little introverted and I heard ux designers have to do big presentations and lots of public talking? Or it really depends on the company.
The more senior you get the more you'll be expected to take part in meetings no matter what role you're in. As an introvert myself, some days can definitely be draining but it's worth it imo
Hi, I’m new to this field can someone explain what’s the difference between senior ux designer and lead product designer? When I was getting started with ux I often stumbled upon ux being product design. Thanks!
In my experience, senior was about leading projects and mentoring junior and intermediate designers who weren't my direct reports. Lead has been working much more closely with the founders, strategizing our product direction, and building a design team.
I appreciate the sincerity of this Charli. I am looking into UX design, and was wondering if you recommend a boot camp for it? I’m curious about the General Assembly class, I only have a Associate’s degree. I’m looking into deferred tuition, tuition that I can pay back after getting coached for interviewing/job hunting and then getting a time frame to be able to land a job before being made to pay back the tuition monthly, I noticed some popular boot camps require a bachelors to get on this type of tuition payback plan. I would love your advice/feedback. Thank you 🫶🏻.
