Rhinoceros Beetles (Xylotrupes gideon philippinensis) are truly some of the most spectacular and majestic creatures of the insect world. This is why I was thrilled to add some beetle larvae to our growing menagerie of creatures in the 'Antiverse' (my Ant Room).
Back in October, when I first got the scarab beetle grubs, I prepared growth chambers for them, to house them as they developed into beetles. I was told they were going to emerge by Christmas time, but when both Christmas and New Year passed with no beetle in sight, I finally made the decision supported by your votes, to go in and look for them! What we discover in this video will truly amaze you, as well as my grand idea for us to have some fun with a beetle tournament.

I had a rhino beetle like that once. One day I was playing with it and showing it to my dormmates at my boarding school (which is where I found it). It was so fun to look at it crawl around on my arm and scare my friends with it. It was all fun and games until my friend was holding it, letting it climb his arm when... it’s shell opened spreading it’s giant wings. It stood still for a few seconds. What little time we had to react, some of my friends ran, some stood still cold in fear, some screamed. The one with the beetle on his hand tried not to panic. And then... it flew. Buzzing around, the dorm everyone was in chaos until it landed on my friends towel where someone picked it up and make sure it didn’t go of flying again. We decided it was time to let it go at that point. It was fun playing with him, but you know as they say... if you love it let it go

For your next batch of beetle larvae put one dog food piece per week in each enclosure. This helps the beetles grow into much bigger adults, mostly having bigger horns. Also congrats on the beetles! Like so ants Canada can see so next time he gets even bigger beetles!

The Outdoor Explorer Actually not all beetle larvae can feed on dog food piece maybe some beetles such as the Goliathus species’ larvae can feed on dog food as their larvae is a little carnivorous.

When he was saying 'precious finds' I found myself whispering, "please be females, please be females, please be females..." Yes, I actually cheered when the girls were revealed! lol! I'm suddenly addicted to bugs. Which is so weird because I'm a bug-o-phobic. BIG time. I despise all insects. Yet here I am. Cheering for insects and actually smiling when they do well. So strange. I choose Hephaestus, because in mythology he was a nice guy who invented all sorts of useful things, but was spurned for being a cripple. Also, most of the Greek Gods are horrible people. Zeus cheated on his wife dozens of times with mortal women and abducted women. Poseidon also cheated on his wife. Ares slaughtered thousands for entertainment, slept with Aphrodite (who was married to someone else) and is the master of some of the most evil and destructive spirits there are, such as Eris. Apollo murdered the Cyclopes in a hissy-fit. Dionysus was constantly drunk and had little or no sense of proper judgement. Hera killed, attacked and tortured almost all of Zeus' mortal wives and children. Athena spurned Hephaestus, and refused to befriend him due to him being a cripple. Aphrodite slept with Ares while she was already married, had to be bribed into marrying in the first place and played a significant part in starting the ten-year siege of Troy. And Hades conspired with Gaia, in order to kidnap Persephone, who was a teenager at the time!

Hades didn't conspire with Gaia and didn't kidnap Persephone either, she also wasn't a teenager, Hades invited Persephone because he wanted to court her, she loved it down there because she wasn't treated like something fragile like her mother treated her. The reason they have different size horns is because the food. The food u are giving them is not the best too.It like u giving mealworms to ants, Sure they will survive but it's not as good as roaches. White rotten wood mixed with cow feces(U can use black soil with high percent of poop) seeing that the container is small u need to change 75% of the food for the larvae every month. The thing u said about rain is not 100% true. Beetles when they are born it will take about 1 month for them to become active.(It like they were just born and need time for the blood to run through there body) So in about 1 month from them being born they will come out and find food and that is when they are ready to breed. PLEASE do not let them fight next week. If u do Most of the beetles will not be ready and very weak and after the fight most of them will have really shorten life. U can breed them 1 month after the female starts eating. PLEASE I BEG DON;T LET THEM FIGHT YET. It will shorten the beetle life and is not good for there health. If u throw the losing ones out they will also die without a chance since they are not ready to find food. They can't fly till the resting period is over(As I said above 1 month) As a beetle lover and breeder please don't do this yet. Thank u and I hope u will hear me out. Toop Sriramatr , it really sounds like you know what you are talking about. So I really, really hope he sees your comment and takes your advice. I have never really cared about beetles, ants or any type of bugs! But I, along with everyone else I’m sure, am invested in these beetles now and I want them all to do well. It sounds like they have a very short lifespan already, it would be such a shame to let them battle it out and shorten their lifespan even further. I used to catch June beetles when I was young, a very common thing to do in summer if you live in the countryside in the Philippines, but these giant beetles I kinda avoid, they kinda scared me. They are pretty harmless but looks scary when flying lol.

Mikey, I have been following you since those videos of a tetramorium caespitum colony starting in a pumice stone nest, I think its a little after that first video of you collecting a myrmica rubra colony. And through all this years, I have seen how this channel have become so popular, I never imagined such a niche channel about ants would have almost 2.5 million subscribers!! And I just feel so happy for all this succes you have and I love how you keep popularizing this amazing hobby of ant keeping and educating about ants, insects and wildlife in general. Of course, I remember you. I rarely come across those who have supported the channel since its very different and humble beginnings back in 2009 (OMG it's been a decade! How?!!). Happy you commented. Wow a decade already, it almost seems like it was yesterday! I was like 10 years old around that time and somehow stumbled upon your channel and since that moment, I have loved ants and insects in general, they are so fascinating! When I finish college and start supporting myself I hope to FINALLY buy one of your formicariums, its been one of my dreams since I first discovered you channel hahaha. Probably it was little early to dig up the beetles. Some of the beetles were not ready to be out. as you can see the second beetles was still has lighter colour compare to the 1st beetle, but this happens often and beetles are strong, so no need to worry! Give few weeks for them to be very active and very hungry! And very excited for future videos of them! Maybe breed some of them?! Good luck!!!!

Also if you put the males in the same enclosure they will fight for the food, and cause stress for the Bbeatles, but it will take few weeks for them to mature and start fighting, so I guess you still have time to prepare the each enclosure.
