It's unfortunate that the interview process favors neurotypical people in this way. As someone with a neurodevelopmental disorder, I have to practice extra hard to not ramble, because my brain is wired in an unorganized way where I easily lose my train of thought and am forgetful. I would argue that I am proficient in written communication skills though; but, that isn't very helpful in a live interview.

I made it to a final interview and they told me I answered everything right but I was not well structured and not confident enough. I am crushed. I lost the opportunity even though they thought highly of my technical skills and knowledge.

It sucks doesn't it. Because your actual skills and knowledge are more relevant to a job than how you 'perform' on an interview on one day. Such is the game of job hunting :(

Agree with previous comment! If you tick all the boxes for the role but they ignore that because all employers want someone who comes cocksure ticks the boxes, but back in the real day to day grind, they’re unable to transpose what they enfused they can do but really can’t because they’re quite introverted and hard on themselves they sabotage themselves, but in an interview that the projection of what they want to be. Back to you!! You can do it, but don’t like being in interview scenarios or others where you have to talk positive about you. Yet in the real world, you would be left to do what you said you can do and in that moment you excel, you ask questions confidently whilst you’re finding your feet, whys that? I believe when people are on their stage that’s when you see them because they feel at home, secure and confident. Too many times an employer has ideal i their head of how the interviewee should talk, their tone i.e. business like or enthusiastic like a child and what type of answers you give. If it isn’t the same they can’t see past it because they’ve wrongly built up a perception rather than seeing the person.

I relate to this so much. Especially my most recent round of interviews. They love my skills and experience but I have this unstructured way of communicating trail of thoughts, and lack confidence sometimes. I just want my nice introverted job where I don't have to speak to people.

I think I just discovered why I didn't get the last job. I was so excited about the opportunity that I was all over the place which may have come across as scattered because I was so enthusiastic. They did seem a bit overwhelmed by my enthusiasm. I didn't read it at the time but in hindsight I can see how I came across

I noticed that it also the depends on the interviewer. From the beginning they were late and seemed uninterested so it's easy to get nervous and start rambling.

I guess that's why some give nothing away and have a poker face - they're testing if you can shut yourself up. Or they hate you anyway so it doesn't matter what you say!

As a Medical Secretary, I have over 20 years experience and im very good at my job. However, I have a speech impediment, which when under pressure effects how I articulate answers adversely. If it were written answers, I would walk it every time. I am currently in the interviewing process and getting nowhere.

It sounds easy for me to say- but you can take your time in answering questions. Plan to speak 3x more slowly than normal. With nerves this will take you up to normal speed. If you have a stutter break on the letter - relax and enunciate. ( This takes practice- ) Print out words you have problems with, and say them to a stopwatch at ever increasing speeds. If you look at Rowan Atkinson you will see how he overcame a stutter to become a great actor! If you lisp, or roll your rs there are exercises you can do ( youtube) just practice... breathe and practice. You are also eligable for speech therapy, as this is affecting your life.

What does it mean/show when the interviewer/recruiter you have happens to be the rambler? And how to approach this?
@johnkun77
@johnkun77 Год назад
My problem with rambling is when after I'm done giving my explanation there is a short period of silence. I find me asking myself "should I say more?" and I go on.
@Tornadospeed10

Probably because interviewers deal with people taking long pauses to think if the question caught them off guard or if they don’t know what to say. So they’d rather wait a bit longer to make sure you were not going to to continue

Thank you. It was shortly after Christmas when I got a call from a recruiting firm over a bookkeeping position. I believe my big mistake was just that - I just hyper-focused with my enthusiasm over one topic, like I was pouring my heart out to him. Despite it being a phone call, I could tell the recruiter on the phone was getting agitated with me. (as he had that "Silence...I don't know what to say...Silence" response) Next thing I know, 2 or so weeks passed, and I didn't hear from anyone about this job. My mom always told me to let my words be few. Few meaning let your answers be simple and straight to the point, that is. Sometimes, I wish I had listened to my elders. Very good advice pointers in your video. BTW - will add this video to one of my playlists.

Romans TenSeventeen Thank you for sharing this story, it is such a common situation. One thing I’ve done to overcome this is take a job interview when I wasn’t looking, just to practice interviewing in a low stakes environment so that when it was time to interview for a company I was interested I had a bit of practice. Thanks for watching and wishing you the best!

I keep watching your videos and I say this with respect❤: slow it down and lower your voice just a little. I often have headache listening to you and the video ends and I get to a point "so I know what NOT to do". Take some realistic situations and tell us about them. You only talk about companies and tech... What to do if you don't have much on your CV? What to say if you are asked weather you want children soon or not? What to say if she asks you how to handle a certain conflict etc.....

Hi, I need your feedback. I always give long story answers in my interviews , which i think give more clarity to the interviewer, but I always failed... What is the technique I should follow to give crisp, short and clear answers... I tried the STAR technique, but again the answer goes around the time of 1.50 minutes.I am so depressed with my habit... Please suggest...
@coolx9357
@coolx9357 3 года назад
I have the same issue, from what I have gathered, you don't need to give as much detail for the interviewer. Say more with less. Just look up examples of star method answers, and evaluate them to your answers. You may be able to eliminate 1 or 2 sentences from your answers, making them 1 minute. You just need to give brief answers, but not super detailed. You can record your answers and listen back to them to possibly see where you feel maybe that's too much info, and eliminate that part from your answer. Remember, basics first, if they want more detail they will ask, or at the end of your interview, ask them if they want clarification on any answer or etc.
