This was fantastic! I loved how in depth you went on each of the changes and it goes to show how insane some characters in this game really are.

The fact that you can switch out Serge in new game plus for battles is when the real fun happens. Until then black and white are so important for elemental synergy. After that point you are finally free to embrace that odd ball party you know you truly wanted... but sadly at that point you can use pretty much anyone because it's new game plus...

That's really good, it feels quite accurate overall. And any differences would probably be more play style and character preference.

Great video. I know we differ on some things but you were spot on for the most part IMO. I think people under value Spriggs utility and Fargos "brokenness". As i said in your previous video Cure All becomes available as a rare drop under Viper Manor and is the best heall element up to the point you get Fargo besides all you mentioned about him. No matter how many playthroughs i cant resist having him in my party. Plus hes a pirate. Only thing I would do is bump Serge/Lynx and Glenn to the very top. I know you gave your explanation in what you were making SS tier about but Mastermune/Twin Einlanzers just completely breaks the game at the end. Id just have to put them way up top because of how broken/OP they really are

A year late to the conversation, but I'd like to argue against the statements of White & Black Innate characters being redundant with Serge or Lynx depending on the point in the game. I personally find it incredibly helpful to double down on White or Black Innates to go with Serge/Lynx to boost his power even further since they'll also benefit from turning the field White/Black (this is why Harle is such a popular and powerful character: She and Lynx enable each other to deal insane damage since they both want a Black Field to fire off their Techs and Black Holes). It's also handy to use a High Magic White/Black Innate in addition to Serge/Lynx to fire off the summons (especially in the case of Saints since you can't use Unicorn to clean up what Saints didn't KO). doubling down on elements can also benefit other non-White/Black Innate characters. For example, while you rank Korcha super low (I personally found him to be 2nd best Blue Innate since he's very comparable to Serge), he can still work great alongside Leena, since making the field Blue for her to summon Frog Prince also makes Korcha hit MUCH harder. Another thing I want to note is that it's not particularly ideal to take just the stats into account when tiering them. For example, Orcha, for example, has a party healing Tech, which makes him incredibly unique amongst Reds, who primarily focus on single target damaging techs. This isn't even taking into account the number of characters who were ranked without accounting for their utility techs (like Riddel), or characters who have AoE techs (like Karsh's AxialAxe) Another example is Mel. While having low Strength, she is unique in that she's the only Yellow with a high Magic stat, which makes farming Thundastorms worth doing. Additionally, she has a Double Tech with Kid which, according to various sources, has a boosted chance of scoring the Rare Steal. To top it all off, she's also one of the few characters to get a Lv.6 Grid Slot by the time you reach Fort Dragonia for the first time, AND isn't weak to the Blob Boss's attacks, which you'll be dealing with a lot of before it casts Icebergs to trap. Lastly, I wanna make an argument in favor of Karsh & Razzly over Glenn (or at least closing the gap between Razzly & Glenn in Razz's case). Karsh is already very close in power to Glenn physically, and comes with a very solid Magic score, making him a far more versatile than Glenn, along with having an AoE Tech while Glenn's are exclusively single target. His lower Stamina regen is negligible as you can just slap on a Stamina Belt to fix that problem easily, and his best weapon is the Rainbow Axe, so he doesn't lose any power in NG+ runs, unlike Glenn. Additionally, getting Karsh is mandatory for progressing through the game, while Glenn is optional, and picking Glenn (on a Fresh Run) means getting two incredibly mediocre characters. Picking Razzly, on the other hand, nets you Blue Serge and Mel, on top of a few more boss fights for Stars, a whole extra dungeon, the ability to steal a pair of Moonglasses from Harle, and a Triple Tech for Leena to partake in (if you do Razzly's quest right). Razzly's low bulk isn't as much of an issue (nor should it be to you seeing as you ranked some equally frail characters pretty high with no comments on their frailty lol) as she has high Evasion & evasive gear on top of the wide array of gear you get to boost defense. Rods' fierce attacks being super inaccurate is negligible as you can just chain a bunch of Weak Attacks to build up Element Power and fire off a Tornado.

Great to see a revamp of the tier list, not sure if anyone noticed but there was a typo for Karsh from B --> S (it was written B --> A instead) 😅

Fargo, Chrono Cross' living Captain Morgan's, truly is THE BEST! SWISS! SWASH! INVINCIBLE! I do like that Harle, though, and she and the other shot characters can get Sneff's ultimate deck The Pack of Lies from Terra Tower and it CRITS like crazy. I played through the game 5 times JUST to get Harle in my final party (2 additional times because I messed up my first playthrough not making saves at the right spots). There's just this weird nostalgia for Harle I have, she was like these weird harlequin clown girl mannequins at the mall, Idk.

So many good jokes in this one. I laughed out loud at Pip-tier.

I think you're skipping over what makes Leena so good. Her skills are so powerful by comparison. Maidenheart for a MAGIC heavy character to reset elements is amazing, especially midgame and Maidenfaith is imo the best ability in game. 99% hit chance + 20% phys damage boost and... an auto revive. So she becomes really strong, and with her own death protection which in this game is rare, and yet very valuable.

I'm so confused, I had the limited edition game and in that game when you get to the forthdragonia you where able to use the z move with serge and glen but I have been playing now on the ps emulator and PC but that move never appears anymore now its only with another character later on into the game

Just a question, but do you think that this tier list would be radically different when considering a New Game Plus run? Or if we omitted the consideration of innate colors and evaluated them based solely on battle prowess?

Any list that doesn't have Serge/Lynx in his own tier at the very top is wrong. Once you get the Mastermune you don't even need other party members. It's especially odd to place him below Kid who has poor availability and aside from the Moonglasses (which can also be obtained as a drop) doesn't even steal anything of value. Your list is pretty good otherwise although Macha is way too low and Luccia is way too high just based on their stats.

Hi, thanks for your time preparing this list, like everyone else I disagree only with little things, probably because we have a different experience and that's what make this game great. I think that Harle is the top black character because at higher levels, damaging techs give way to special traits, Harle have a lv5 tech that gives your entire party a Def and M.Def shield, she is the top black magic user and have only a little less Str than Lynx. This is why Fargo is the top blue character, he have less Str than Orlha and less magic than Marcy/Leena, deal less damage than Hero set Pierre, but he brings more utility due his stealing, but for me he tie with Leena because her lv7 tech that recharges all her elements is broken. If you want to breeze through the game then get Pierre and don't save Kid (for Glenn), but I can argue that Razzly is super strong early on and we have more resources at the end than the beginning.

poor Pip, it couldve been an SS tier, easily, if they fixed Pip. you can possibly equip multiple different innate-exclusive elements and you can pick a different evolution route each playthru, if you want. too bad its stats and grid, which are important are busted. Fargo, i agree that he is one of the best character, BUT SS-tier? not really. Serge and Glenn at SS, because of their ultimate weapons, the main reason are the hidden weapon effects: mastermune (hp regen/100% crit rate) and einlanzer -upgraded- (hp regen/5% physical dmg/high crit rate) about Kid, getting a spectral weapon earlier than usual is not a big deal to put her on S-tier. but honestly everyone is viable, even Pip.

Pip is S tier. You can't change my mind.

I like the list overall, but the way you describe synergy is so inaccurate, entirely because of the elemental field effect. Using a color notably decreases the power of the opposing color, so when you say a black and white character have good synergy together, it's blatantly false; they are effectively de-powering each other. In actuality, characters of the same color have synergy.

I would like to note that Razzly's weapon type hits ALL targets on the fierce attack, and her Lv3 special move is also multi-target (scratch that part, it misremembered, her Lv3 is single-target). She is hands down the best at clearing out random battles. It's especially insane if you have another character quickly use a Lv1 EagleEye on her, then she can do Fierce -> Fierce -> Raz-Star, and that will end most random battles, pretty early in the game. Yeah her weakness against yellow is there for sure, but there are many ways you can mitigate that with equipment choices. It's not like she needs a boost in Magic or Stamina growth like most of the other characters, leaving her equips open to giving her better survivability (High Defense items and/or Yellow Plate). Also, she synergizes so well with Serge and any of the Stealing characters, because (in my opinion) it's best to have one black/white character, one blue/red character, and one green/yellow character. It means no matter what the boss innate is, only one of you will be weak against it. So Serge + Stealing character + Razzly works out very well in a trio. But I can't overstate how fast you can clear out battles with a quick EagleEye on Razzly, then 2 Fierce attacks followed by a Raz-Star (because all of those attacks will hit every enemy at 99% hit).

I used Norris alot because it was funny how he brought a gun to a sword fight. He was doing crazy damage for me, and yeah that lv5 tech was great for clearing randoms. He can also use Starky's Plasma Gun, which is like one attack less the spectral gun whatever it's called, so you can get by without making that. I thought he might be bumped up one. I guess for availability, you get him early enough as Lynx, and you can't not get him...

you should do a list like this but on the characters as characters design ignoring there combat cababilities. would be nice to see your opinion on the characters art wise

I would put Serge and Lynx above everybody else. Once you get the mastermune they just outclass everyone else in terms of raw damage. I would put Glenn right next to them, just due to how high his damage is, especially when paired with Serge. (Their X-strike duel tech is the only attack I could find that would deal 1000+ damage in the endgame.) I would also put Kid lower down in A tier, just because of her average stats. I would also definitely not put Fargo in the SS tier. While the ability to steal is very useful, I just found him lacking in strength compared to Leena. Her ability to recharge her elements is just too strong of an ability to warrant putting her below Fargo in my opinion.

Much improved tier list. I figured Serge and Glenn would be SS tier, since their damage is unmatched and nearly breaks the game. Fargo is definitely top of the line. I can see why he's SS. He's not the best at anything, but checks all the boxes you look for in a party. A party without him is either missing out, or is using 2 characters to stand in the gap he single handedly fills.

I may not agree with all the placements but I’ll say the A tier and above is definitely what people should be using for useful characters of the game, good job overall separating the bad with the good. The only gripe I have is Norris should be in the bottom of A tier. He’s an average stat character, good availability, good stamina regen and his Sun Shower tech is a strong multi hit without the AoE penalty. I hardly use yellow innate characters since they all pretty much got the shaft but it’s always Norris or Zoah.

Great to see an updated list with more of a spread. Been playing the game since release and generally agree with the list, although I don't find stamina as much of a deal-breaker nowadays after a few games with low stamina characters. Last few with the remaster, for example, my Viper and Zoah massively outperformed Draggy even without stamina belts. The only things I would really mention beyond niggling subjective bits are 1. Fargo is S tier for sure, but not SS. The best thing you can steal in the game is Moonglasses, and that's Kid. Plates are largely inferior pieces of armor without much use with the exception of yellow plate for Cryosphinx and black for Dario (assuming you're not cheesing through), though he's definitely strong enough to be very high; and 2. Nikki. He's not A tier. There is no point in the game that you'll have Nikki, but not a better blue character, whether it's Leena, Marcy, or Fargo. He never shines as a result.

Very nice list, much improved from the previous which was already good. I'd still love to see a tier list ranking the characters on their narrative rather than mechanical quality - unique dialog lines (ie not just generic + accent), relevance to the core plot (lynx/surge/fate/dragons/frozen flame) or significant side plots (dragoons, marbule, etc), best personal stories/recruitment scenarios, depth added to (or detracted from) the overall story or setting by their inclusion. Such a list would obviously be more subjective, but it would still be great to hear your take on it.

l mean.. it's more like Lynx is redundant with Harle. Harle is the best character in the game bar none, her stats are no less than 2 standard deviations above the average, nearly clearing 3 in a few cases. I understand that she has poor availability, but she's absolutely broken. macha should also be higher, her stats are also ridiculous. you also far underrated Riddel. She's far and away the best caster in the game and should not be on the same tier as razzly.

When it comes to Fargo, "the secret ingredient is crime". Very literally. I dislike him, because it is just dumb not to use him. He becomes available around a time where the most crucial items are needed to be pilfered, and he is the only one capable of doing so. He is broken indeed for this very reason. I'd love to have a team of weirdos, but this basic dude steals the show... Sad.

I usually prefer magic users so I have some doubts to accept higher spots for Fargo and Orlha for example, but I recognize that it is a fair evaluation

What part of Pip is broken besides his stats? I did a vid proving his grids are fixed etc. Even at the lowest star level you can have him get his grids (12). Pip is actually fixed compared to all of the older versions which would reset upon turning the game off unless you knew the method to save his grids to the cache. Harle is easily SS tier. Fargo has no business in the SS tier. He's S tier at best. Pip eventually becomes one of the best fighters once he reaches his full potential, but that's pretty late so I understand if someone doesn't like Pip. Leah deserves to be higher because of her huge physical damage capabilities, but yeah it's preference.

I was worried you wouldn't see how awesome grobyc is =P Personally I think Norris could be moved up if we are talking casual play. You can snag Starky around the same time and moving Starky's alien weapon over to Norris makes him to pretty big damage for awhile after you get him. I do like fargo but I have used in for years. Skipped playing him this time except for on the dragon plates and had a lot more fun not feeling like I was forced to have him in the party. Fun list^^

I think I’m also a little unsure of your description of synergy in this game, I know you mention that black-white characters synergize well with each other, and I would agree if the element field didn’t effectively have one constantly weakening the other and vice versa depending on whose elements are being used. Granted, it’s most definitely the smarter choice to have variety-otherwise bosses of opposing innates would carry the ability to one-shot the party-but I think always opting for opposing elements is situational at best. To introduce even more nuance, I’ve personally been experimenting with the Turn elements while still keeping a semi-permanent party. I find that using the Turn elements in battles where you have more than one character of the same innate color is a very useful way of giving other characters new possibilities (i.e. fighting the Giant Gloop in Fort Dragonia - Another with Serge, Leena, and Pierre, turning either the boss or Leena/Pierre red with Turn Red). It opens up a lot of (albeit, situational) doors but I think it’s notable enough to bring to the conversation.

Seriously, I cannot BEGIN to tell you how much better this Tier list is than your previous one! It's INFINITELY better! In fact it's so good & I agree with so much of it that it's now my favorite Tier list I've seen for this game thus far! Nearly every character is absolutely spot on where I would put them and that is SUPER rare as I play a TON of JRPG's & I almost never come across this. I also LOVE how much credit you gave to Fargo. He is also my absolute favorite character in this game simply because of just how INSANELY valuable he is when you get him. Once I get him he literally does not leave my party for most of the game unless it's to train other characters. HOWEVER! If I had to nitpick, there are really only two characters I straight up disagree with their ranks, and that's Macha & Kid. Macha's stats are very solid all around & good enough where she simply does not belong in the C tier & should be B tier. Not that it really matters cus she is indeed not all that special compared to the better characters in the game & thus you probably won't use her anyway, but for accuracy sake I really think it's an injustice to put her that low. Her stats are just too solid & goo all around which is actually kind of rare, and they are better than even a lot of B tier ranked characters. She 100% belongs in B tier imo. But the worst by far is Kid. I truly feel that you have her grossly overrated. Her stats are VERY mediocre, like average as hell. She excels in literally nothing stat wise, nothing. Her stats are lower in every single way compared to literally every single other A or S tier character. Yes, she's the main character & yes her utility is amazing with being able to Steal, and considering she's the main character & has an awesome personality you tend to want to use her. However It's just not accurate or fair to rank her that high when she simply is not very good in combat. She just isn't, let's be real here. And all of this isn't even taking into consideration her awful availability, something you seem to value a lot. Yet you still have her ranked really high. I mean just look at her stats compared to other top ranked characters. She just doesn't stack up. She's weak, has low defense, mediocre magic, just mediocre everything really. I just don't see it... Also, if I had to nitpick just a bit more I'd say that you have Janice a bit too low. She belongs in the lower end of the A tier imo. She has really good stats all around & a great ultimate weapon. I am also glad that you redid Orhla. She is a great character & belongs among the top of the A tier imo.

Great video, but as i said multiple times in another video, pip deserve a better place, especially with easier process to evolve him in radical dreamer edition, his buggy grid is also fixed, unfortunately, his stat stay permanently buggy. Second, with his very good availbility (Well you can rerecruited pip after you get fargo), pip can get more mini level up, infact, my pip str is not that different with glenn end game. (maybe i got good rng with his str? anyone?) Third, He is the only char who can equip any element, change to any color innate, Yellow pip with vigora and Cure all? why not? This make pip a good choice for a support char, equip him with 3 stamina band, and he ready to cast strengthen, magnify, vigora, and color field, super fast. For me a vigora user has to be a str oriented such as fargo, and orlha.. A caster should not waste her turn to cast vigora.. Fourth, as you mentioned, pip is a glove user.. Well im biased toward pip haha, and i see what u did there by putting him in his and only one pip tier lol..

If I may comment on NeoFio; I'm not sure if it's because I gave them a spectral glove early (I did not know about the free one in Terra tower), but I found them to be doing a ludicrous amount of damage with techs. _Especially_ - funnily enough - her dual tech with Turnip, which was my highest source of single target damage with a tech by the end of my first playthrough. Flying arrow was doing around 750 (With mastermune), tossed salad was doing around 830. I don't know why this was. It just was.

I don't agree with EVERYTHING on your list but I def. approve of Marcy and Draggy being A tier. My Marcy got lucky and gained insane stats, easily my best caster meanwhile Riddel is at 20 magic before Sea of Eden lmao.

Great tier list! I think one of the best things about this game, though, is that you can play through and beat the game easily enough with whichever characters you like, regardless of their tier. I...really don't like Grobyc because the-way-he-talks-annoys-me, so even if he were SSS tier, I wouldn't use him; I can still get through the game just as easily.

ZOAH IS THE BEST CHARACTER IN THE GAME .. BETTER THAN THE REST COMBINED

I'd argue Orhla could be S tier... if you could recruit her sooner. She's fast, strong, decently tough and magical, and she's Blue with the glove weapon; if you could recruit her earlier, she could be a viable alternate to Fargo.

Why would the Radius + Zoah white tech be useful for Lynx? I thought white field effects would weaken Lynx's black elements?

Personally, I think your A tier is a little bloated, with Miki probably should be just behind Harle if a player didn't pick up Nikki.

Sprig should be in a special tier. Depending on Sprig's forms, they could be great or terrible.

At this point, Pip's placement might change since his glitch was fixed in the latest patch.

I am blown away to see pip is considered broken in the bad way. I've never achieved the Chrono cross ending without him, because I consider soothe to be such a powerhouse. When Lavos gets a turn, he *loves* to interrupt your element chain, which I got sick of really, really fast. I personally used white pip in archangel form, which buffs soothe considerably, so in order to simply not give Lavos the chance to act at all... I get to full element power, defend until everyone has 7 stamina, then cast yellow, red, green (putting the first character at 2 stam, second at 1, third at zero.) Blue (now -5.), Black (now -6), *Soothe* for white, and bam, I can cast chrono cross, no interruption. In fact, soothe is so strong, I could probably keep the chain going for an extra element if there *were* one. Soothe is an incredible ability, the healing is just a nice side bonus, but as a stamina management tool, I feel there is no one better in the game, especially going Archangel. Also, you could make that Archangel *Any* color you want (Including the colors that normally evolve the *other* way), and with planning, make it have three different innate element techs for crazy coverage, as those aren't unequipped on evolution. I always thought pip was fully and completely busted, stats totally didn't matter to me for my use case. Blows me away to see I'm in the minority on that.

I don't know if it's enough to bump her to S but an underrated part of Razzly is that her strong attack hits all enemies which I don't believe anyone else in the game can do without elements/techs. Though maybe I'd put her in S to cope with what I had to intentionally let happen by wasting time to get her Level 7.

Ok, Mojoy is okay to me and he has insane Evd for dodging single physical attacks. He is only need Vest and shoes. I am trying combine each character for accessories. So can ya make Accessories Teirs or something?

How about Janice being able to get her Lv7 skill IMMEDIATELY after you recruit her? (if you know where it is) I believe she's the character that can get their Lv7 skill the earliest. Granted, you can't allocate it it until you defeat the first boss in the dead sea; but still, it's like 2-3 bosses after you get her.

You missed the opportunity to call it the SS - Invincible tier.

Been replaying this game a lot on my switch and made a rule to never use glenn on my first play through bc he makes the game too easy lol. My final party for terra tower is usually serge/marcy/fargo or razzly or kid. Marcy has grown on me since shes easily the most balanced and strong character in the game. Im a heavy magic user on my new game files bc aoe makes trash fights easy. Norris imo should be A tier. Hes a good character overall and has access to starky's special gun from arni village that makes him one of the hardest hitters before miguel. Love your channel!

I love how much attention you gave to Sprigg in it this time. She's seriously underrated. All her forms are good, can cover every element, and you can have her transform into the same form as a LV1 tech to recharge all the elements that get used up(Assuming the enemy even lives that long~). Tho I am confused to how you define synergy. I am not sure how to see Black-White, Red-Blue, Yellow-Green as synergistic. I suppose they cover for each others weakness so that you don't have to worry too much about getting one-shot by an element weakness, but at that point you're kinda sacrificing one party member for the other to be at their best. I've always believed that synergistic colors were the ones that don't have to step on each others toes to be at their best. A team of White-Blue-Green, or, Black-Red-Yellow. As examples. They avoid the one-shotting problem, they might not get a boost, but you get to play with a full party. You can fill the Field effect with one color to empower who you need without shooting another party member in the leg.

You forgot Orhla in the B tier. One of the strongest characters in the game with good stamina, magic, and very high Strength. She’s Fargo without Steal but better magic. EDIT: by forgot I mean you skipped over her when discussing blue characters.

Regarding Poshul and the Dev ending, I brought Home Poshul to try to get that ending on the remaster and got the Acacia Empire ending instead. I didn't talk to Leena or get even a single Komodo Scale.

I saw the text of Karsh B => A as you said he’s S-tier. I completely agree with most of your tier list. I’d say Serge is higher than Kid, and I even use Draggy as my main red innate. Glenn is the best green along with Karsh. Draggy grew on me as the game progresses and is my fav Red below Kid. Apparently Karsh has stronger stat boosts than Glenn when I checked GameFAQs. Glenn though works sooo well with Serge. I’ll have to try Marcy over Leena. But when Fargo arrives I totally agree, he’s broken. The sword use is so good to switch between Glenn when you acquire a Spectral Sword in New Game +. Imho my favorite team composition remains as Serge, Fargo, Glenn. Orhla is also A tier yeah agree entirely from your description. Sprigg I think while super useful, acts a non standard Green for me and has limited use for me after trapping elements with CusCus. I like Glenn / Karsh more! But that could be my inexperience. Will have to try Zoah over Norris in my next run, but I like Norris’ gun a lot with his stamina recovery and element grid over Zoah. Harle is definitely A tier. I agree completely while she’s OP she doesn’t meld well with Lynx and she’s only available through 1/4th to 1/3rd of the game. Fargo after Vigora is just nutty. Easily the best swiss army knife. Fantastic vid and revisions. Can’t wait for your Sprigg guide! Early game my team comp is Serge, Leena, Kid. Then Serge, Glenn, Leena after Viper Manor. Lynx, Harle, Draggy / Sprigg mid game. Lynx, Fargo, Karsh mid late. Serge, Fargo, Glenn late game. What do you think? :)
