Ahead of my first trip to the UK for OLL '23 in Norwich I thought I'd look at every SNES game that only came out in European territories. This doesn't include games like Terranigma that was also released in Japan.

Sensible Soccer is almost like a religion for a certain segment of UK gamers in the 90s. It was the best playing football game, hands down cos of "after touch". It's best on the Amiga (as most Sensible games including Cannon Fodder are) Is Terranigma missing off your list? It was Japan+Europe exclusive...it's normally the main PAL SNES game Americans lament not having over the pond

NES was always just "Nintendo" here, and SNES was just "Super Nintendo". But I never heard anyone spell out the letters when speaking Norwegian, that would sound kind of weird here. If using the shorter names it would just be Nes and Snes. Same as we say Nato, not N-A-T-O.

@@stimorolication9480 It's so interesting how it is different in every country. When it comes to just saying the word or spelling out every letter, I feel like it's pretty random here in Germany. We also say Nato, but then there's A-D-A-C or words where both are common like RAF.

Cannon Fodder was a huge hit on the Amiga, made by one of the best developers of the Amiga golden age. Definitely a good time. A really unique and fun RTS-like. Asterix and Obelix are huge cultural icons in France, and are very popular all over Europe. Any new Asterix comic (which are released irregularly) tends to receive preorders in the many millions. A lot of the humor is based around puns and French politics and current-events, which makes it all the more extraordinary that they are still translated well into other languages. In France we even have a Asterix theme park, which is one of the most popular theme parks in the country. There are two very good Asterix games on the Sega Master System, which are probably the best games the franchise has ever received. Lucky Luke is another comic that has been very successful in Europe. It also had a very popular cartoon spin-off. Sensible Soccer (by the same devs as Cannon Fodder!) vs Kick-Off was, during the early 90s, a HOTLY debated issue on many school playgrounds! Sensible Soccer is indeed a game you can play, and it may well be one of (if not THE) best selling games on the Amiga. The SNES port isn't quite as good as the Amiga original, but I still find it quite fun once you figure it out. If you want to get a good British/Euro perspective of what gaming was like on the other side of the pond, check out Kim Justice's RU-vid channel. She has many excellent videos about the Amiga, SNES, and Mega Drive in Europe, including long form documentaries on a lot of major European game developers, including Sensible Software (of Sensible Soccer/Cannon Fodder fame). She also has videos specifically on Cannon Fodder and Sensible Soccer.
@stimorolication9480
@stimorolication9480 Год назад
Asterix also had a great arcade game by Konami. Cannon Fodder and Sensible Soccer were indeed among the most popular games on the Amiga, and those are still the best versions. However the Mega Drive port of Cannon Fodder plays pretty well and looks as good. Even Mega-lo-Mania plays well on Mega Drive. Super Nintendo unfortunately wasn't as well suited for Amiga ports due to the low screen resolution. I have never been able to get into any console ports of Sensi. SWOS on Amiga is the best. It even filled up our PAL screens with full 320x256 resolution. Perfection.
@Jayce_Alexander
@Jayce_Alexander Год назад
@@stimorolication9480 oh yeah I forgot about the arcade game. You are absolutely right, that was a great game. With great animations that really capture the feel of Asterix. And yes that is a good point, the Mega Drive was very well suited for Amiga ports. Another World and Flashback both play better on the Mega Drive than the SNES, I think (Flashback is fine on the SNES, but the MD version is better; Another World on the SNES had too much lag imo), and I quite enjoyed the Mega Drive version of Leander too. It also had some pretty decent PC ports. I like that with the older generations of consoles, like the SNES and Mega Drive, each console had a very strong identity of its own. You recognize a Mega Drive game or a SNES game when you see and hear it. Different graphics, different sounds, but also different in which genres and styles were more common. That's probably one of the reasons people are still so attached to those two consoles after all these years. I love both, because they each have their own strengths, and very strong and unique game libraries that feel very different. 😁 And while it's not a console, that goes for the Amiga too. Unique sounds, unique graphics, and a wonderful game library with some really unique and fairly experimental games (Sensi and Cannon Fodder included).
@stimorolication9480
@stimorolication9480 Год назад
@@Jayce_Alexander I agree with every single word. I had lots of games for the Amiga, in large parts due to the rampant piracy. We had very few games for the Mega Drive, and didn't even have a SNES. It's been great getting to know all those console games I missed out on, and love both platforms now.

- I can't help but when I look at Archer Maclean's Dropzone that the Astronaut guy looks like the character from the NES game Solar Jetman. 😃 - Also wasn't Tintin on the cable station The Family Channel back in the 90s?🤔 - Man that Winter Gold game looks incredible for SNES graphics and visuals at that time. Interesting exclusive games. Surprised some of these didn't make it over here. Thanks again for making this video JohnRiggs. ( P.S. By the way I loved Waterworld as well. Kevin Costner was good as the main character and Dennis Hopper just always plays the best flamboyant villainy characters. 😀)

Dropzone was on the C64. I've always thought it came after Defender, but we're talking months only.

Yeah, Dirt Racer and Winter Gold are Super FX games. I agree Winter Gold is really cool, I should spend more time with it, as well as with Super Dropzone. I own boxed copies of both, but haven't played them much so far.

I can remember there being a ton of outrage for cannon fodder when it was released, feel old now!🤣

Spirou is also a Belgo-Franco comic like Tintin but from different creators. The graphical style is very different but I understand how they look similar in game form. Both are focused on adventure and have a journalism/investigative theme. But Spirou is more modern in its humor and have more wacky/fantastical characters.

Hi John, hope you enjoy the UK. I think for Sensible Soccer you've selected the teams but you have to make one of the teams blue and this is for the human player, otherwise the computer will play itself I think.

Spirou is just like Tintin a Franco-Belgian comic strip. Same with Marsupilami if you remember that one. Asterix is very popular in Europe, and that one is also Franco-Belgian. Comic strip, cartoons, live action films and a big amusement park near to Paris. Like your Liverpool stuff. Having a baaaad season though.

I dont know what's going on with your play of Sensible Soccer but it's one of the best football games pre-Fifa and International Superstar Soccer. I'd argue it IS the best football game pre-FIFA and ISS. The best version was Sensible World of Soccer for the Amiga - you could play 20 seasons of a career.

In Sensible Soccer when you choose a team, you have to press the button TWICE, so the C next to the team name becomes a P. This way you tell the SNES which team is controlled by the Player and by the Computer.

You can use the SNES mouse when playing Cannon Fodder. I rarely played the snes version. I did however play it on the Amiga 500

I'm a tad surprised the Christmas game had the American Santa motif as opposed to Father Christmas.
