I don't like when people say "Papyrus doesn't know what death is." Because of course he does. He's a grown ass adult. It's just that either he refuses to believe that certain characters in whatever ending are dead or he refuses to believe that you killed them as he always sees the good in people. Papyrus isn't naive, he just refuses to believe that anyone would go to the extent of killing, especially the human who he befriended. That's why he's one of the only characters that Flowey actually talks about. Papyrus's beliefs are the antithesis of Flowey's "Kill or be Killed" mindset. Papyrus believes anyone can do good and make a difference if they really try, and with Flowey's limit on feeling emotions without a soul, it's something he can't wrap his head around.
He also confirms he was scared of you if you spare him during no-mercy. He knows you could have killed him, but he hid it because he wanted to help you.
I know that UT characters can of course lie, but that Sans saying to Papyrus that Undyne and some other characters (i can't actually remember) are on vacation and him saying "I hope they're having fun" sounds kinda naive from Papyrus.
@@UndertalenjoyerI think it's more likely Sans wants to keep this stuff from his younger brother to spare him the pain, not necessarily that papyrus is genuinely that nïeve/gullible. Him 'believing it' may be too avoid worrying sans, or something he says to frisk's face as the original comment suggested.
god, alphys ending is just so... real. she WANTED to call you, just to let you know she hates you and wishes she killed you, and doesnt sugarcoat it, she just directly states it, with a pained smile on her face. she's such an underrated character

Damn Undyne really gets shafted in the neutral endings doesn't she? She is either dead or depressed in literally all of them except two, and those two are just variations of each other.
Well, i suppose that is the natural progression for her character. Since she is everyone's hero, and she failed to stop you, maybe even befriended you, is natural she would blame herself if you killed someone

and gosh just. the endings where sans says "This is what happens when people like me take it easy." like. he only fights you when you kill absolutely EVERYONE. if there's anybody left alive... he just doesn't do anything. and... these endings are him realizing he should've done so much more. *could've* done so much more. if he'd just gotten off of his ass and stopped you, so to speak. it's just... it's sad
It's implied that while Sans doesn't know exactly when they happen, he at least knows that Frisk is resetting time. He doesn't interfere because he knows that whatever he does could just be reset. When Frisk leaves the underground and you get one of the neutral endings, that's when Sans realizes he might be stuck with the current timeline. That's at least my explanation for the No King anding and why he is suddenly a hard worker in the Papyrus ending.
@@ninjawiz7932 You know, it’s funny. When Sans first discovers the time-space continuum going haywire, it’s actually Flowey’s fault that it keeps happening. However, his conclusion that the Human is responsible for the resets ends up becoming right despite the initially wrong answer, because the Human had taken over the save function by then.

God, the Alphys one is so fucking chilling. You have to remember that up to Undyne, this is genocide. You only have Toriel’s number. Sans FOUND your number just so Alphys can call you and tell you she should’ve killed you when she had the chance. Not to mention hearing someone as meek as Alphys telling you with full confidence that she HATES you and wishes DEATH upon you… Christ. This is worse than genocide. At least in Genocide, there wasn’t anyone left to hate me.
Alphys ending is just so... raw. All other endings are Sans calling you to either let you know what has happened and possibly to threaten you, Mettaton ending is cool for that edge, but Alphys ending? SHE was the one who wanted to call you, and only to let you know that you deserve absolutely nothing. Her entire view of humankind was crushed by her own lack of action and your excessive action, the only thing keeping her going the fact that she ended up doing the best thing she could have done: save as many people as she could while facing her worst mistakes, and being rightfully praised for her bravery. She is so... HUMAN for this. And you are not. And this realization has broken her into the best version of herself, through hatred and guilt. Paraphrasing the ending of one of my fave movies, I wonder who the real monsters are.
The best part about "I should have killed you when I had the chance" is that as you read further into Alphys lore, it becomes clear that it's not an empty threat. She's actually incredibly powerful, having access to a ton of super advanced technology. She could definitely have killed you at just about any point after exiting the ruins. But in all but the Alphys ending (and true pacifist), she cannot convince herself that she has the ability to do good things, because whenever she uses her technology, the result is, in her words, "a screw-up". In many ways she's held back by what she thinks she can't do, while Sans is held back by what he knows he can't do. They both have mental trauma preventing them from using the true extent of their abilities, but only Sans gets recognized as a deep character as such.

The neutral endings always give me more chills than the True Pacifist or Genocide endings. Something about the music and/or the new society we created really sits with me on how our decisions sort of "matter", as opposed to the supposed message of Deltarune.
Yeah, chara destroying the world is honestly an act of mercy, these desolate waste lands you leave behind in some of the neutral endings are way worse.
@@TheRealSuperKirby It's only an act of mercy if you believe, as Chara does, that humans are inherently evil. Which is why Chara enforces the erase. Humans treated them awfully in life, and this human just treated the monsters awfully too by killing almost all of them. There is nothing left worth saving in this world; only more people with the capacity for violence.
For those that don't quite understand how to get the different neutral endings, there is a hierarchy for who to rule for the normal endings, which goes Toriel, Undyne, Metatton, Papyrus and Alphys. You will get the ending of whoever highest is alive, with the variants being the combinations of whoever else you killed (or made disappeared with Alphys). That's why there is so many Toriel endings for example.

@@danielgonzalez-vm5ljBasically, first Toriel goes on the high of her position, then Undyne do a coup and take over rule. If they're both die, a star of capitalism, with dictatorial plans would take rule due to his high popularity. Next, when everybody conected to elite would die Papyrus just happen to be the only one that would want to rule. And Alphis is so anxious that she do it only if you force her to fell DETERMINATION, after killing Undyne the Undying but without killing everyone. If there is no one alive there is no a real ruler, except a dog of course.
Toriel and Undyne can sort of switch places depending on who you killed, no? I'm pretty sure Toriel only takes priority if you haven't killed any other major character besides Undyne.
@@afanisthedolphin not really toriel does come up as she is the Queen But depending on what you did monsters might hate her policies forcing her out of the throne giving it to the second option ( undyne)
@@danielgonzalez-vm5ljalphys is heavily implied to end her own life in most endings where undyne or mettaton die - that plays a preeeeetty big role in her not ruling too. (That being said though yeah - in any situation that has her survive save for the one where she really does become queen, I think she'd be too anxious, guilt-ridden and full of self hatred to take up the job)
I think its interesting how in the no-alphys endings, especially the ruler mettaton one, what happened to alphys is kinda ambigious. Some might say she klled herself, but it could also be that she died in the true lab trying to fix her problems or is still down there trying to fix it.
Alphys disappears because she's depressed at that point, and I believe the last thing she'd do in that state is try to own up to her mistakes. So those two latter scenarios are unlikely. She either unalived herself, or shut herself in, in the true lab. Not as a way to own her mistakes, just to escape from reality. However there's also the Metatton's line "trust me, I looked", implying he also didn't find her in the true lab.

The fandom: "Oh my god, Toriel HATES Asgore." The game: *Toriel canonically keeps traces of him close such as having a ton of plants or making his favorite foods still and is extremely depressed her husband is dead in the neutral endings.*

@@mangaprofilepicture5820 She hadn't seen him in a few decades (probably the equivalent of a few years for them) and only knew limited information. Everything she said was either on impulse from a lot of resurfacing emotions or from plain ignorance. After all, she said that Asgore could have gone to the Surface, knowing that Asriel died by doing that and that Asgore wouldn't have faired much better with his own pacifism. (Asgore gives Frisk multiple opportunities to avoid their fight, will always leave them at 1 HP before a final attack, is looking away during the fight, and breaks the Mercy button because he feels he doesn't deserve mercy.) Not to mention all the mandates and rules Asgore made to make the Underground safer. There's a few things saying that traps and spikes need to be removed which Papyrus deliberately ignored. Asgore is also implied to have planted the Golden Flowers in Waterfall, which ended up cushioning Frisk's fall, because one of the humans likely did die from falling in that area. It's not like Toriel was doing much better when it's implied that one of the humans died from falling into one of the pits in the Ruins. (Toriel likely then filled the pits with leaves from the tree in from of her home.)
@@michaelcarlton1484Papyrus mentions the mandate is recent, and that they are thinking on getting rid of them, wouldn't say he ignored it, more like we fell before Papyrus had the chance to dismantle it The golden flowers in the garbage dump are more likely to be from seeds that stuck onto alphys (in the true lab she mentions the seeds stick to you and won't let go, and we know Alphys often goes to the dump) And no, no human died in the ruins, Toriel points out that they all went, and left And since Toriel blocked off the ruins, and the only exit is in her basement, is impossible for the soul to have gotten to Asgore's castle without Toriel's direct involvement (but she obviously wouldn't just send him the soul via fax, lol) The ribbon is also said to have been lost by it's owner according to the Undertale Demo manual (granted, the manual's canonicity is up in the air) so we have no real evidence suggesting they died there
Something I find kinda interesting about these endings is that when Toriel becomes ruler she declares that all humans are to be considered friends and when Undyne becomes ruler all humans are to be considered enemies, but when Papyrus becomes ruler, Sans tells him that humans can't be judged to be all good or all bad. Even though he acts like a total goober most of the time, he seems to be a lot more mature than the other characters, or at least he's more of a realist. I've personally always wondered how Sans knows so much about his world and the timelines and why he chose to take up his role as a Judge even though most of the time he prefers not to do any work which is why I've always been excited by the, now very likely, possibility that we'll learn more about him in Deltarune. Also it's very wholesome that when Papyrus becomes ruler he actually works hard to help out his brother. Anyways, Gerson and Mettaton are the most based characters in Undertale.
The most likely reason why Sans knows about timelines is because of flowey. In his fight, he mentions that "our research showed timelines jumping left and right". Which matches with flowey telling you that he started resetting a lot. He knows about the concept of resets basically, and figures out you can reset too by looking at you. He doesn't remember about past resets because of "magic", he just already studied resets, and is smart enough to figure out the details
@@underdragon2664 YES, EXACTLY, I'M SO GLAD YOU UNDERSTAND. sans does not know when resets happen, only that they CAN. no character other than flowey even knows when resets happen-- lots of people mention talking to asgore in his fight when talking about characters knowing of resets, but he doesn't know how many times he's killed you, only that he's killed you before (and he only knows this because you straight-up tell him).
@@geoman265. Yes, but that's not because of powers, it's because he is very smart. He knows you will die against him, and makes guesses each time just by looking at your body language. That's why after eleven deaths he says he will not be able to count, or because he slips up at 9 deaths (he says something like "that's 7, no wait, 9 deaths.")
There's Rupturetale based off the Alphys ending (few months after), so far having a complete ruins and snowdin arc, and they're both really interesting by having an introverted protagonist interact with an underground that's pretty shaken and broken after the slaughter. And Aftergore is a sound cloud series that expands upon many different neutral endings with unique tracks and dialogue.
King Mettaton ending with Papyrus is fangame material, but Queen Alphys ending is more for the fanfic writers, I would say. Adventure plot through the dystopian Underground vs. character studies with Alphys and Sans (a friendship I wish we had more content for, goddammit).
God I would love a comic/game/Au centered around the king Mettaton (w/ papyrus) ending. Dystopian glitter dictatoship ft Mind control? Complicated villain Mettaton with a side of angst?? Potentially morally ambiguous Sans and Papyrus??? C'mon there's so much potential here.
Something about Sans trying to help Alphys in the Queen Alphys ending is super sweet to me. Also them having some unknown connection in the past helps!
They can both trauma bond over having all this power but still feeling powerless. Also I would assume that in this ending Sans eventually means to let her in on the secret of the timelines, because while it would burden her with the same existential nihilistic depression as Sans, it would actually somewhat free her from responsibility for her past failures: Asgore asked her to attempt an impossible task, because she understood that Determination existed as a concept, but it simply did not work the way she thought.

The Neutral Route endings truly ARE underrated. Most of them are, admittedly, Sans and Papyrus-centric, ones like the Alphys Ending and the Mettaton Ending are interesting looks into the characters. Though, Dog Ending easily deserved to be the top of S Tier. Joking aside, I like the Betrayed Undyne Endings the best. And, yes, I agree; "I should have killed you when I had the chance" is the HARDEST line Alphys has ever spoken. I still don't get how people can hate her.
Alphys Is really underrated, Specially considering how massive her character development Is on both Pacifist and Genocide On Pacifist, she becomes like almost 100% confident after revealing her secrets, and on Genocide she’s a fucking hero
I always thought that the Neutral Endings were where you get the most out of the main cast. Seeing how each character would react to these scenarios really says a lot about each of them and really fleshes them out. I think my favorite is No King, because it shows that Sans knew the risk of making his promise and was really counting on you to not just treat everyone's lives like a game. Hell, he doesn't even fight you 'cause he KNOWS you'll be back to get another ending...
Yeah, I mean, he made his promise because he really doesn't care about anything unless you hurt his brother. Even then, he knows you'll just reset, so he's only temporarily pissed off. He only takes action when you resetting is no longer on the table because you are about to literally destroy the universe. The purpose of "you'd be dead where you stand" isn't that it's literally true, because he probably wouldn't have just killed the human on sight even with no promise. The purpose is to let you know that he knows what you are and what you're capable of, and to warn you against misusing your power.

@@alexanderthegreat-mx5zu LOVE increases power exponentially. It's why you start out weak and all but by the end you can do bonkers stuff like killing Mettaton in one shot and killing Flowey even through his Determination like it's nothing. At LOVE 20, Chara's attack slices open reality itself.
It’s also because Papyrus never got your number, meaning Sans never knew your number, so he had to look for it (either through researching or looking through Toriel’s phone)
@@tyronisback5747 Probably the latter, he likely went into the Ruins found her phone and realized she still has our number saved and could call, then went to Alphys and was like "You wanna leave that message?" And there we get the ending.
I like to think that both of them wanted to call you, just that if it wasn't for alphys, sans wouldn't have done it. I just think that when alphys is telling you that she should've killed you when she could, he's like "fr"
I remember I once aborted a genocide right before killing Papyrus, mostly because of the "I really respect what you did back there" line. I'm kinda sad there aren't more aborted Genocide endings.
One time, I wanted to spare Mad Dummy really badly because I didn't want them to be a ghost forever. I wanted Glad dummy, but then I realised that I had to do Genocide.
It's because he's never actually happy, except maybe in true pacifist. He has existential nihilistic depression because he knows about the timelines, so from his perspective, literally nothing matters cause it'll just get reset. Killing Papyrus is the only thing that cuts deep enough to break through his facade, because nothing else the player can do is any worse than every day of knowing his choices dont mean anything because he does not have enough Determination.
eh...portraying yourself a certain way on the outside, and your emotions, have always been two seperate things. especially for a character like sans. he will always portray himself the same way, (unless hes given no other choice) but its a mystery how he actually feels.
@@armandomasoudi5041 fr tho, it's such a fanon thing to do *to take one **_fucking_** line* and just build a whole character around it, just... Sans is a dude, guys. A methodic, sometimes lazy dude who knows just a little more than others. Not a crazyman who goes anime-style onto the main character. Not the dumb man who does nothing but crack jokes. He has quite a strong facade though, you'd have to admit. Perhaps the reason he doesn't do much to you aside from genocide is because he wants to hide what he knows.
If you ask me, the Neutral endings embody the idea of Undertale greatest; they let you see directly how your simple choice to let one person live or let another one die so drastically affected the future of Monsterkind.
Didn't know they went so deep, I love it, glad I saw it at the end, just a little sad that they couldn't make some images or background to show more what they are talking about, but would be so rough in the depressing ones

the alphys ending has always been one of my all-time favorites. just, the jarring way she straight up says "i hate you" and "i really shouldve killed you when i had the chance" when shes the last person youd expect to hear that from, combined with her changing so much for the better as a person in the worst circumstances??? its so good. alphys shouldve gotten more recognition in undertales hay day, and she still deserves it now. shes such a good character.
I remember my first run of Undertale. I played it like I did a regular RPG, and I wasn't influenced by any outside media. I didn't know about the pacifist or genocide routes until I looked into it and looked up how to do it. I'm so glad I had that first experience, I think that made me appreciate this game more.
@@pineapple-gw2hh I think it was one of the Leaderless endings. Probably the one where black eyed Sans says "see ya", I don't think I killed enough monsters to get the other one and I don't remember ever seeing Alphys in the final bits of dialogue.
@@lavistalimited4747I've played Undertale with my friend after recomending him the game. He basically played No Mercy Route, because that's like normal thing to do. In the end, he spared Asgore and went to play Pacifist because he wanted, not because internet told him that it is the only way to play
@@Uragan00829 At first, I didn't know you could beat the game without killing anyone. I tried ACTing on a few monsters, but because I didn't notice any changes to the monster's behaviour or attack patterns, I saw no point in doing it again and went back to FIGHTing.
The thing that just kills me about the alphys ending is the silence in it , theres no sad music in it , no wind , nothing just pure silence You wiped out most of the underground and didnt even commit to finishing the job and you are left with the most depressing ending in the game
I swear Leaderless and Alphys ending are worse and way more cruel than genocide because you are leaving the few survivors to rot for dead with no way of escaping . At this point death is way more of a mercy for them and yeah genocide is enough bad already but at least no one was left behind to suffer in the end and to me this is a fate worse than death
I think the reason it takes people so long to get the 'spearheaded' joke is because Sans is almost always serious during these endings. He tends to drop the 'ha ha funny' and just tell ya how it is, but there's the few times he'll slip a joke in.
Ik I’m late but I wish there was an ending where it was basically the Alphys ending but they somehow found a way out of the underground and the last line being “See you soon” Like cmon just imagine how scary that would be to hear Sans or alphys say that knowing karmas out to get ya.
I have NEVER seen the alphys ending before, holy shit thats something crazy. I REALLY WANT TO KNOW, what would happen if there was a scenario where alphys exprinces this ending, the player reserts, then tries doing a playthrough again. With the only difference being alphys keeps her memory after making some anti determination machine or something i dont know, just a crackpot fanfic waiting to happen.
Even if Sans tells her about the timelines, she still won't know after the reset. The only way would be for her to recreate the process that created Flowey, and that would turn her into a sociopath just like Flowey.
Not gonna lie, I wanna see fangames for some of these endings as a "post-game" continuation of their situations. Some of them are pretty clear cut- but others could lead to some really interesting interactions.
in many ways, the neutral endings are far sadder than Mercilessm Merciless ending is the end of an entire world, sure, but everyones gone, theres no one to suffer, and you have already disconnected yourself from the game so the characters thematically mean nothing to you. Neutral endings are always somber, full of mistakes and no one ever ends up happier or better off, and to you theyre still real people.
My favorite is That one Froggit you first found in the ruins ending, Hes now the biggest communist dictator in the underground, He even says "ribbit (fuck you)" in the phone
Its always been really intresting to me that killing paps is most often a breaking point for rebellion the two would seem so unrelated but apparently hes just holding the underground together by sheer greatness
About neutral endings, those two comments say basically everything I want to say: "One of the things about this, all of those monsters words... Are never heard by Frisk on the surface. The connection obviously wouldn't be able to make it to the surface. If the connection did, monsters would have been contacting the humans on the surface long ago. Frisk-- the phone they have. It never got the call. It's just why the caller says something at the beginning like "Is anyone there?" No one answered. This is all just a message. All the emotions and feelings put into the calls are never heard. They are all talking to themselves to a phone." ~ @ZachMari "Well technically we heard it. There's also this. The phones of the underground run on magic, nearly everything does, they also probably have a completely different number system since there are about a few hundred monsters in there max they probably wouldn't need as many number variations so either they don't use all 10 digits for a call like we do or since their signal runs on magic it's automatically incompatible with human phones until someone like Alphys upgrades it to be able to call both.
Ending 61. Family Ending w/o Alphys and w/ Challenge - Reset. Do not use any consumables or equip any armor. Get All Yellow Credits except Amalgamates (and Mad Mew Mew in 101%). Get 2 Monster Candies. Get the Faded Ribbon. Get the Butterscotch Pie. Spare Toriel. Do not heal at the Box Road. Get the Tough Glove in your inventory and dump everything else in the box. Equip the Tough Glove. Trigger the cutscene in the next room. Die to Snowdrake in the same room. Get the Snowman Piece. Spare Glyde (Applaud twice, then Nothing thrice). Interact with the Snow Poffs in Greater Dog’s room until you get 30G. Spare Papyrus. Date Sans at Grillby’s. Date Papyrus. Interact with the couch in his house. Get the Old Tutu. Get the Abandoned Quiche. Dump everything in the box. Buy 2 Nice Creams. Drop both Nice Creams. Get Early Ballet Shoes and equip them. Drop the second Punch Card if you have it. Get 2 bars of Astronaut Food. Do not do Mad Dummy Skip to get the yellow credit. Next to Gerson’s shop, get the Butterscotch Pie in your inventory. Dump the Tough Glove and a bar of Astronaut Food in the box. Buy 5 Cloudy Glasses from Gerson’s shop. Head to the Temmie Village. Get Temmie’s credit on the way. Go to the Tem Shop. Sell the Butterscotch Pie first and press No, then Yes. Sell everything else but the Punch Card. Get everything you can out of the box but the Snowman Piece. Sell any item but the Stick or Punch Card first. Sell the Stick second and press No, then Yes. Sell everything else but the Punch Card. Get the last non-Snowman Piece item from the box in your inventory and sell it. Go back to Gerson’s shop. Keep buying Cloudy Glasses and dumping them in the box until you’ve filled both your inventory and the box. Go back to the Tem Shop. Sell all the Cloudy Glasses you have. If Tem wants to give you extra money, press No, then Yes. Make sure you do not sell the Punch Card. Repeat the backtracking until you have at least 2001G (or 1751G if you’ve died to Mad Dummy at least 5 times). Get Moldbygg’s yellow credit while backtracking. Buy 1G Temmie Flakes, College and Temmie Armor. Dump Temmie Flakes in the box and get the Snowman Piece in your inventory. Spare Undyne. Get Aaron’s credit and date Undyne after getting your menu back after Jetpack Skip. Date Sans in the Hotel after getting your menu back after Musical Skip. Do not do Snowie Core to get Astigmatism’s credit. Skip Mettaton. Do Alphys Elevator Skip. Save in Judgement Hall. Get the key to Sans’ room by reloading and talking to Sans multiple times. Get this ending.
Some of these neutral route ending are much crueler than genocide. Because instead of killing everyone quickly and ending all monster kind, you watch as the hopes of monster kind fall apart and watch as everyone gives up on life. There could be some counter arguments there but suffering is worse than anything.

Exactly and I classify Leaderless ending as the worst one because while we as the player didn't go on a complete genocide what was done was worse than simply wiping out monsterkind . We left the ones that were left alive trapped in the dark ,with no way of escaping and with no hope of ever having a better times. They have lost families and friends and on top of that are doomed to rot to death in despair . Sans can't become their full time leader since he himself admitted that he isn't particularly suited for the position and he blames himself for not trying to do anything to stop Frisk even though he us probably aware that whatever he does is pointless because it will always reset and all the progress would be erased
I love your voice for Sans. It's not overdone or too deep like so many other voices people give him and it actually comes close to fitting both his personality, wit and voice.. uhh.. thing. The thing the game plays when he talks. I have no idea what the fandom calls that noise. LOL. (And that menacing Sans voice gives me chills.) Your Papyrus voice is also adorable and fitting. Lacking the annoying nasally-ness that many other VAs give it.

i mean, horrortale is one of the most popular aus and its based on the ending where undyne becomes queen. and im sure theres some others too. but yeah, it does feel like theres some missed potential with a lot of these endings.
The Alphys ending really struck a chord with me personally. I was once in a past relationship where I did little to nothing about the abuse I was facing from my ex. I kept turning a blind eye for so long until eventually, I couldn't and everything was right in front of me. It felt like my whole world view had been absolutely crushed, I had fallen into this pit so much darker than I had ever faced before. And yet, it was that breaking point that got me to get up and try to mend what little I had of myself, to try and be a better version of myself where I would take action. I'm nowhere near perfect but I'm getting better. And then, I look back and think of all the times I should've spoken up or taken the opportunity to escape, thinking, "I should've left when I had the chance". It's like how Alphys felt about the player, scarred that everything happened but learned to try and be better for the sake of everyone else. And then wishing that she could've taken the opportunity to take action and save her friends, or better yet, kill you when she had the chance.
It's absolutely mind-blowing to think about how much time and effort Toby went through just for all of these extra endings due to specific little details and certain events, and it makes me appreciate him and his games a lot.
Ngl, i kinda want a flowey takes over ending. Like, if you kill everyone as per usual, but then decide to spare flowey after he kills asgore at the end of genocide. I'm just saying that because i think flowey is one of the most interesting characters in the game
I like the theory that Payrus simply keeps sugarcoating everything and knows well what happened. He simply keeps up his facade to bring out the goodness in you.
You're so real for the Alphys ending. That line is the biggest reason why she's my favorite character in the game. Miss girl is in only two endings and ate both performances up, give her an Oscar! I love the idea of the neutral endings as a whole but my only biggest complaint is how jarring of a tone shift there is when you abort Genocide via sparing Monster Kid. It kinda hurts her ending too if you think about how she should've been evacuating everyone but then you spare MK but kill Undyne (Or really spare her too) and we're back to wacky hijinks with the killer robot so she can make herself look better. Overall that's my only criticism of her ending though- And it isn't even really connected to the ending itself. Just UT and how it handles the game when killing certain monsters
you're TOTALLY right, there should've been a unique ending for sparing monster kid. or even a unique mini-route entirely, where you're kind of in a blend of neutral and genocide 'cause everyone's already started evacuating but undyne hasn't un-died. but then again, this game already has so much to uncover, and i bet thinking of all the neutral endings that would branch off of this path would make toby fox's head spin LOL
@@clawcakes2 Yeah I get why there aren't more lol, but at the very least it should default to meeting Mettaton only with just extra dialogue about you sparing them or not. With the rest of the game being the same as normal Genocide + EX or Neo before defaulting to Queen Alphys (Or Undyne if you spared her)
I'm pretty sure the Alphys ending makes a plot hole when sparing Monster Kid, too? Alphys never watches Undyne's fight with the human- and the call "with crazed desperation in her voice" that Alphys says was motivation to start the evacuation had to come before the Undying fight. My best guess is "everyone's hearts beating as one" in the Undying fight caused a knock-on effect within Alphys's soul- just as being a part of Asriel gave every monster knowledge of Frisk's name. Making herself better to the human isn't just a self esteem matter too- I'm pretty sure she states her goal in that was to gain trust to stop you from killing Asgore. It's an awful decision after you kill all but MK, but not completely heartless. (Unrelated, but I think it should have been harder to get ratings in the Mettaton EX fight if you kill lots of people. "More dust piles means less potential viewers, darling!")

Sparing Monster Kid makes a plot hole in the genocide run as a whole, since even Mettaton says she's evacuated everyone during our "thing". But after we fight Neutral Undyne, our previous path is never addressed. Which- Again- Is weird for the person who said she was watching our journey. It almost feels like they'd be doing this whole song and dance to try and distract the human so they don't kill anyone else? That's literally the best theory I can come up with- They're pretending everything is okay? True, I forgot that she wanted to befriend them so they wouldn't want to leave and kill Asgore. I was more thinking about the way Mettaton described it as her trying to be the "heroine" of our story. But I think there's bigger problems when a rampaging human that's known for killing monsters got past Undyne, regardless of the one child they spared

Betrayed Undyne without Alphys is just so fucking saaaad man. I'm glad it's on S tier. It's just so sad, seeing the confident royal guard in pieces and even saying that revenge won't do anything, God it hurts.
the neutral ending where only papyrus (and various monsters) live is so heart breaking. "sans told me they all went on vacation" like WOW the emotion in that one line is devastating given the context also90 DAMN sans and alphys with those RAW lines. DAMN

Genocide is horror; we're just not used to a horror movie where the protagonist is the monster. It's like reverse Frankenstein: The twist in Frankenstein is that the "monster" is actually the protagonist and the human is actually the monster, whereas the twist in Genocide is that the protagonist is actually the monster and the "monster" is actually the hero.
I still remember my first playthrough of Undertale back in 2021. I went completely blind to the game, didn't know any spoilers, didn't know about the pacifist/genocide mechanic, so I pretty much played it like a normal RPG. The ending I got on my first playthrough was the Papyrus ending. Here's how I ended up with that ending. I killed Toriel because that's what she wanted, for you to fight her and prove yourself. I didn't want to kill her, but I know about the pacifist mechanic and multiple endings, since I went completely blind. I killed Undyne and Mettaton because they were trying to kill me. But Papyrus was super easy to spare. I didn't see him as a threat at all. So I tried the spare feature because I got an opportunity to use it. Maybe the Toriel fight influenced me a little. And of course, I killed Flowey too because he has been after me throughout the whole game, so I didn't get Flowey's hint towards the pacifist ending after Sans's call. Not gonna lie, when I got to the ending for the first time, it was really haunting. Sure, it's not as bad as the leaderless ending since Papyrus was still alive. But I knew when I got that ending, something's not right. I still thought it was a good game, so I started googling to learn more about the game. And of course, learned about the pacifist mechanic. So I went after the true pacifist ending on my second playthrough. And a game I thought was just "good" just became one of my favorites video games of all time!
She's definitely the most intelligent character, at least in the main cast. When she's willing to put her agency to use, it's damn near the most impactful thing in the game, aside from maybe the TP ending
Honestly, I find the endings with a depressed Undyne hit harder for me than Alphys' one-liner. Simply hearing a larger-than-life character like Undyne be described the way she is in those endings, with her not even able to muster up the energy to come to the phone to get angry at the player is just...sad
One ending is missing here and it's the one that for some reason most people forget- the one where you spare everyone but don't give Undyne the water at Hotland. It's one of the only endings where you don't kill a single monster but still get a neutral ending. Papyrus talks about how Undyne came down with a really bad fever. I haven't seen anyone ever talk about it even though I got it on my first playthrough.
I like how a 3rd of these endings are just Sans and Toriel becoming roomies, how wholesome. Then another 3rd are just Toby deciding he doesn't like Undyne anymore
And the no Papyrus ones getting 10x darker due to Sans threatening us. As long as Papyrus is alive Sans is pretty indifferent about the state of the underground... Its sad and adorable at the same time
Been replayin' UT and gettin' all sorts of Neutral endings. Mostly because I wanted to do Betrayed Undyne w/ Date & Challenge for fun on So Sorry day. I love the Alphys and Papyrus endings so much, so much melancholic hope within them. To a certain extent these endings are also why in my Deltarune playthrough I'm trying to pacify via fighting rather than acting; since it makes the fights more tense damage management rather than clicking funny buttons.
@@potatopotato3284 Challenge is one of the things Sans can mention at the start of the phone call. It's where you can't use consumables or armour and be Love 1.

@@clawcakes2 Yep, you kill So Sorry and they give you only 1 exp. So they're the only monster you kill after dating Undyne. It's very silly and most likely an oversight, but that's how you can do it.
I'm so glad you ranked the alphys ending and the mettaton w skelebro agents endings at the top - they're both definitely the coolest by far and i really wish more fan-content explored some of the endings like that. Pacifist and genocide are cool endings sure, but all the neutral endings have so much potential to be explored and looked at!
God, I LOVE the Alphys ending!! Legitimately my favorite neutral ending in the entire game (besides Dog Ending lol) Like, you get so much characterization for her in that one, and I just love being able to see what it would take for her to confront her anxieties and take action against a very real threat to the lives of everyone. The entire trope of just looking at what it takes for a character to take major actions like that and change whatever they have to under pressure is one of my favorites, and I love how heartbroken Alphys is about the situation she was put in, but she chooses to keep going anyway because she has to. And the fact that she doesn't really stutter at all in the phone call because she doesn't doubt herself at all about how much she hates you and that she just needs to get all of that off her chest. I'm so happy you put it as the best ending, it really us the ending of all time

Get All Yellow Credits except Amalgamates (and Mad Mew Mew in 101%). Get 2 Monster Candies. Get the Faded Ribbon. Get the Butterscotch Pie. Spare Toriel. Do not heal at the Box Road. Get the Tough Glove in your inventory and dump everything else in the box. Equip the Tough Glove. Trigger the cutscene in the next room. Die to Snowdrake in the same room. Get the Snowman Piece. Spare Glyde (Applaud twice, then Nothing thrice). Interact with the Snow Poffs in Greater Dog’s room until you get 30G. Spare Papyrus. Date Sans at Grillby’s. Date Papyrus. Interact with the couch in his house. Get the Old Tutu. Get the Abandoned Quiche. Dump everything in the box. Buy 2 Nice Creams. Drop both Nice Creams. Get Early Ballet Shoes and equip them. Drop the second Punch Card if you have it. Get 2 bars of Astronaut Food. Do not do Mad Dummy Skip to get the yellow credit. Next to Gerson’s shop, get the Butterscotch Pie in your inventory. Dump the Tough Glove and a bar of Astronaut Food in the box. Buy 5 Cloudy Glasses from Gerson’s shop. Head to the Temmie Village. Get Temmie’s credit on the way. Go to the Tem Shop. These endings are amazing and your tier list is very agreeable. I'd say my top three are 1. go to hell. 2. Alphys 3. Exiled Queen w/o Papyrus. (I like the raw angst okay)
i haven't really touched undertale in a long time. i've never beaten the game, only watched playthroughs many years ago, and after the release of deltarune, i kind of forgot why people like undertale in the first place. but watching all the neutral endings like this, man... this-- all the angst, all the different branching paths, all the character arcs and relationships and silly dialogue and horribly chilling scenes-- is why people love this game.
Shayy’s voice acting really really sells these endings Like obviously it’s nice to differentiate the voices of the characters but the subtle inflections imbue the performance with more emotion than just reading it normally would Making some of Papyrus’s lines strained to make his cheeriness a little more fake and Sans’s anger show through some dialogue even though his expression doesn’t change Like it is heartbreaking and it is upsetting and you can feel the difference it makes That is class Well done
I just love the endings that get really depressing. They just make me feel something. Normally when playing Games where you have to defeat certain bosses or enemies you dont feel bad about it because the outcome is just regular. But Undertale really makes you sit there and realize what kind of cruel soul you are and if you know the true pacifist ending it makes you feel even worse. The reason why i also love those depressing endings is because it makes you think about how the monsters live now or what happend to monsters who "disappeared". For example in the ending where Undyne lives with Sans and Papyrus after killing only Mettaton. It just sounds so hard to read that Alphys has disappeared and that Undyne is sad about the fact that she couldnt save her from you and that getting revenge wont bring anyone back. It just makes me think about where Alphys actually is. I mean we only killed Mettaton so we technically never harmed Alphys. My thoughts were always "She either hid in the True Lab to be never seen again or she went to the dumparea in Waterfall and jumped down to take her own life."

multiple things -papyrus ending was the only ending that made me tear up a tiny bit, denial is a coping mechanism for pain -mettaton ending (with papyrus obviously) is actually a lot better than i thought -alphys ending has the fucking rawest line in the game, only go to hell rivals it -i am angry that didn't find out about family ending + alphys i need to do that, as well as some of the other raw endings that's it
There's actually one last "neutral ending" but it isn't a phone call. It's fully different from all the others. The hard mode ending. I just love that one.
I know this is five months old, but... Betrayed Undyne /w Date should've been S for one reason alone; Papyrus of all people telling you to never come back is such a heartbreaking, soul-crushing comment. Like, even if its from the perspective of "Its just for the best", it just shows how hurt he is inside. Fuck man...
The first nuetral ending i got was the "go to hell" one and for some reason i felt so emotionally wrecked and guilty for it. Idk why lol Also, does anyone know HOW you get that ending where mettaton takes over? Just curious.
