So, I read A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, popularly heralded as The Saddest Book Ever, and now that I've read it, I can vouch for that attribute.
I finished A Little Life bout 4-5 days ago. I did not have to talk about it for a few days. It took a while for me to pick up the fragments this book made me.
See, there have been times that the book has made me teary-eyed, both for happy and sad reasons. But the last hundred pages destroyed me in a way, I went numb.
Yes, this is one of the saddest books I have ever read, and I will never ever pick this one up again. There’s just way too much tragedy in this one, and I think reading this book helped me cry, and get some of my emotions out of myself, which made me feel light. The characters are complex and well-crafted and the tale of their passions, hopes, and fears is so intricately woven. After I read it, I hugged the book for a while, and it was my companion that night.
Even after its exaggerated page count, not once did I think that the words were too long, in fact I thought, if maybe, the pages were longer, if there were more words embossed, something better could have happened with Willem and Jude.
See, this book is an exemplary work of art, but before you read this, please read the trigger warnings, and ensure you are in a better place.
The reason why I wanted to pick this one up was mere because I thought maybe, it will help in the release of my emotions. And it understood the assignment. So even though the book was sad, releasing those stuck monsters inside of me felt liberating.
And the reason I cannot actually recommend this to you is, I don’t know how this would make you feel. And if you pick it up, any moment you feel it’s getting too much, you have got to stop, Okay !!!
Also, Please understand, that a piece of work is not as important as your mental health being. You might die several deaths while reading this enigmatic work of art. But the trick is, that it might assist you in overcoming that, or it’d kill you more.
So, folks, be mindful before you pick this one up !!!
