I mean kudos to this author for writing what she wants, but I can't get over still keeping the original names for what's basically published Jasmine/Jafar fanfic
@@ashannaredwolf8485 I think Disney is allowing this because they know the people who read this are probably Disney parents who will raise Disney kids.
@@ashannaredwolf8485 I mean what are they supposed to do? Fail at suing her because the names aren’t copyrighted and then have “Disney sues erotic romance author for Jasmine/Jafar fanfic” plastered all over the Internet?
@@ReadswithRachel Sorry I'm really bad at detecting tone through text so just to be careful, I didn't mean my comment to be rude or anything, and I apologize if it came off aggressive!
Erotica can work without plot, but I find that erotic romances that actually have plot and character development are still much stronger and more impactful
I do love Jafar. Not this Jafar, but the beautifully made and composed musical Twisted. It's by the same company that did A Very Potter Musical and the line "It's all your fault, Jafar!' pops in my head far too often.
Twisted the musical is so good! Btw there is another “Disney” Dark Romance book series called Never After, and the book shipping Jafar and Jasmine is called Twisted, so I feel like it was inspired from the show possibly 🤷♀️ or the line from the original movie
I don’t think anyone has answered it yet, so regarding your question about whether (bodily) fluids can ruin a leather chair, the short answer is yes! If it’s fake leather, moisture will absolutely accelerate how fast the fake leather will start to peel and break down, and real leather can get stained, warped, or outright damaged by excess moisture. So Jafar’s concern about his chair was, in fact, quite warranted! 😂
Saucy Jasmine would be in my wheelhouse. The only time I liked the virgin main character trope was when the special-special girl is prophesied to have a powerful bloodline. That would be cool. All men and boy moms would fear her.
Gilbert Gottfried did a dramatic reading of Fifty Shades in like 2017 or something, and I would lay down my life in a heartbeat to ressurrect the man so that he could have a collab with every booktuber under the sun, or at the very least, become a professional spicy audiobook reader.
@@ixeliema That dramatic reading holds a special place in my heart tbh. Gottfried was a treasure. Also I grew up with him not just as Iago, but Digit from Cyberchase, so hearing him talk about anal took me out permanently lol
"in some ways this was better....worse...and exactly the same as neon gods" man i feel that lol. I think I liked it more but not even sure if I can remember what parts of what go to either story. It's just an amalgamation of katee robert in my brain.
“He is taking his balls and going home” got me dying in the middle of the break room at work 🤣 ☠️. Please don’t stop with the jokes when you review shmerotica !
i assume there has to be either some deal or loophole at play here. Which honestly, good for her. Fuck that big ass corporation. Get your money, Katee!
One of the tricks in media law if you’re *bending* the rules is to make it so embarrassing, no one would take you to court over it. Like if you made a character based on a real person, you would make the character so horrific they wouldn’t want anyone to know it was based on them. In this case, it’s simply not worth Disney’s time to prosecute. They’ll get bad press by having their name associated with smut. They also aren’t losing any money here-they’re never going to monetize this kind of material. It was a smart move on Katee/the publisher’s part.
the way i fully believed they had to stop fooling around to go play dungeons and dragons....... i'm too asexual for my own good. (this video is a DELIGHT thank you so much)
Regarding the House of Mouse, I *think* she can skate on these because none of them are actually original Dis creations - like, Hades is from Greek mythology, Jafar is from 1001 Nights, Peter Pan is in the public domain. And because it's written and not drawn, there's no "this is clearly visibly porn of our characters" angle.
Bahahaha omg I completely agree that alladin’s dad is the only daddy in the franchise believable for me. The clips from alladin you interspersed cracked me up. Honestly there should be a cross over with Gilt where Alladin’s dad’s HAND OF MITUS comes into play
shit, my dad calls me that. he called me that when i was a kid. i am not a fan of people making normal childhood names weird. this is exactly why i stopped calling my own dad daddy.
HERE FOR THE KAZEEM APPRECIATION. I would agree, that movie ruled and if they’d given it the budget for the score and animation it would have been an ACTUAL masterpiece
I just know that the erotic books about Captain Hook that are written out there were inspired by the author seeing the live action Peter Pan movie from like...2003 and maybe a bit inspired by OUAT's Hook. Also, Jafar's staff/cane being on the cover of the book just gives me the impression that it's probably going to be used when they have sex (though, I could totally be wrong).
Hades of Wicked Villains is NOT dead in Neon Gods, NG Hades just thinks he is. There’s a reunion short you can get from signing up for Katee’s newsletter that brings them back together, and it’s surprisingly sweet.
@@jasminv8653 I didn’t say it did. But it literally costs you nothing to acquire, unlike most “DLC,” and given it originated as a short for her Patreon, the fans wanted it. Your opinion is obviously in the minority 🤷🏻♀️
Literally every time I consider reading a Katee Robert book, someone pops into my life in some capacity to remind me that her books are copy>paste>copy>paste. I already read the Jafar/Jasmine that Emily McIntire wrote (spoiler: didn't like it) and didn't even have this book on my radar - I'm going to go ahead and trust the fates on this one.
As a person who has read this book and tried to read the Emily McIntire book, this is so much better, I couldn’t even get very far in any of McIntire’s books tbh. I love the connected universe of this particular series and I like that books are a quick read.
Not only do I love your content (you’ve introduced me to so many great new books!) but I also love your advocacy for people. I’m ace/demi and trying to rebuild my comfort with physical pleasure for my own body. I appreciate your judgement-free pro-sex attitude toward emotional and physical affection while highlighting the differences between consenting rough play and dangerous controlling behavior.
Idk how the author got away with blatant Disney fanfiction, knowing Disney. But good for them, I guess lol. I love the princesses and villains, but I'm more of an Ursula fan *cough*, so I can understand why people read this. Also not a villain, but Aladdin's dad👀
Yeahhhh my oldest has to have a big dental procedure (my youngest had one last february which was even more expensive, thankfully my oldest needs a bit less work) so I've been pretty diligent about uploads in order to cover it and not have to do a payment plan. Frickin teeth and then christmas.
I just keep picturing Jafar in disguise when he was tricking Aladdin to take him to the Cave of Wonders... " Whoever has the gold makes the rules"... The teeth 🤢
I remember stumbling upon this series and wondering how Disney's lawyers didn't come for these books. Yes, I know parody is a thing, but with how protective the mouse is over their brand and how they've cracked down on p*rn parodies/art before, I really can't help but wonder.
my big concern is if the characters are all adults because in the disney movie i’m pretty sure jasmine is a minor. and is there still a big age gap between the two?
Jasmine is about 15 or 16 in the movie, but I’m pretty sure this book made her an adult. (I can’t confirm the latter statement, though; I haven’t read the book.)
The way I paused and considered not listening MULTIPLE TIMES. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to ruin whatever is left of my innocents but I am too curious to not listen
I had a visceral physical reaction when I heard Rachel say that Jasmine was asked to dress as a school girl before they had sex in the dungeon. Like....no....
This was a delight to watch. I feel the same about stories, where character and plot development is very important to me, so erotica... generally wouldn't be my thing. Also, that's Aladdin's dad???? 👀
I had this book recommended to me YEARS ago and didn't read it because I... did not want to. But I've always been curious about it as a whole so this was perf. Thanks for doing the dirty work for us!!
I've read several Katee Robert books and they are all the same. I keep picking them up thinking this will be the time she "shows" instead of "tells," but no. Canonically, Greek gods go into all sorts of adult mischief, disney villains on the other hand...If you like spicy but need quality writing and fairy tale vibes read Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber anthology.
Like, no sorry but why TF is every other licensed Disney character in this book??? Why couldn't we at least stay in Agrahbah? It's like a pornographic House of Mouse spinoff with no cohesion or flavor lmao.
As someone who has been getting into kinky NBC Hannibal fanfic, everything I’ve read on AO3 is still somehow better than this. I truly can’t with these erotica writers.
Your transitions into the promos kill me. What I was definitely not expecting was sex toys, but here we are. 🤣🤣 You never fail to be my favorite booktuber.
I was really disappointed in this because I read some of the author's other work and I was like, yeah. This is a good time. Then I find out we're dealing with just another author who gets "inspired" by other people's IP and doesn't bother to hide their theft of characters and then is praised for originality. I followed her on social media at one point and she was openly promoting these as being the Disney characters. She went on my never read list sooooooooo fast.
@@ReadswithRachel I think if she had a deal with them, she wouldn't have changed the spelling of the names. And I find it very unlikely that she does have a deal with them due to the fact that they have their own line of adult romance novels. Unless she has been contracted to write one of those or has said herself that she has Disney's approval. Otherwise, she's just violating copyright. And while that might not seem like a huge deal because Disney is so big, it really opens the door to violating smaller creators' IP. That said, really nobody seems to care in the romance world when people are "inspired" by stuff they don't have the right to play with.

Look, I fully understand coming up with a fanfic and thinking “hey, I have a pretty good plot here; maybe I could rework it into an original story!” If one goes that route, however, one should maybe change the names to lower one’s chances of getting sued?
YESSSSSSSSS cassim literally had no business being that fine but the animators went all out on his design anyway. i was probably like 8 when i watched that movie and my eyes bulged out of my head LOL where's his erotic fanfiction!?
I just cannot get behind the whole "my father sold me to [insert sexy bad guy]" premise. I can suspend reality for just about any other premise, and go along with it even if it's outlandish. But any contemporary book that begins with a grown ass legal adult saying "my dad sold me..." just makes me roll my eyes. No he didn't. He can't. Not in this universe, at least. How is that legally possible? I am going to have to see the legal paperwork and the state and/or federal bodies that approved this transaction. And if there isn't any, then it’s human trafficking. Also, hats off to the author for the whole element of "consent" and safewords, but why does Jasmine have a safeword. You mean to tell me Jafar is super cool with buying other human beings and murder, but draws the line at not listening to a safeword?! Ugh!!! I know I'm overthinking this, but that's exactly the point! The whole adult being sold premise just cannot be ignored in my mind. Edit to add: I was so busy on my tangent, I completely forgot to thank your Rachel for another amazing video! I love your reviews, whether it's a book I'm interested in or know I won't ever read. You always have such insightful (and humorous) commentary.
I like Katee Roberts Books but man, she writes the same fucking book over and over again. If it wasn’t for the interesting relationship pairings, I’d probably never read anything of hers again. Also, the audio for this book was horrible. Jafar’s voice actor makes me full-body cringe.
How do you sell Disney porn commercially? I thought Disney lawyers didn't approve of that sort of thing. I'm confused, because I got a hassle because I wrote a story involving a public domain character who just had a name that was sort of similar to the name of a DC Comics character.
@@ReadswithRachel In the original story as Scheherezade told it, the character Jafar was based on was just called "the African Wizard" (Aladdin and the Princess, BTW, were Chinese).
@@arcadiaberger9204 Antoine Galland got the story of Aladdin from the Syrian Maronite Catholic storyteller Hanna Diyab. (who is an interesting figure in his own right btw, his memoir the _Book of Travels_ provides some insight) The Middle East had a long oral storytelling tradition, and it's unsure where Hanna Diyab heard it from. Perhaps he was influenced by the Tang dynasty wuxia tale of Kunlun Nu (崑崙奴), or even his own life story.
I loved Aladdin as a kid, but no matter what, I always forgot that Jafar was in the film. He was such a nothing-villain to me that Iago was more of a threat.
No but my first Dad crush WAS Aladdin's dad. Like I never saw Aladdin as a crush. He was just kinda... a jerk? But holy sh*t Aladdin's Dad is so... that man is just; whole series is justified with just him, the Genie being the Genie because we love him, and adorable little Sultan.
