I would be so interested to see Jack do a video on Hozier, especially with his new EP coming out soon, because that man is a lyrical genius, and you can just tell he's well-read.
Would love to see you read some books/poetry that has inspired Hozier, seeing as his lyricism is also so layered and steeped in so many literary references!
Also watching this vid i realized that a line from his song Jackie & Wilson (‘she blows out of nowhere, a roman candle of the wild’) may have been inspired by On the Road which is so interesting
Would love to see you cover Hozier on another celebrity book club! He seems really into a lot of classical and Irish literature and I think it would be your taste
Can I just take a moment to say that these kind of videos where you go deeply into the culutural and the contemporary significane of books in an in-depth manner are my favorite parts of the channel and I hope we keep getting more and more of them. Thank you for blessing us all with you literary presence Jack xD
Matty is literally one of the faces of pop culture wdym??🥲 They're actually big but so is the world so i understand if there's still some people who are not aware of them haha
Matty Healy's taste in books is nearly identical to Richey Edwards', which is interesting to me because both have written some of the most profound lyrics I've ever heard in my life. I've always seen a twinge of Edwards in Healy, so it was cool to connect those dots through literature.
I read your comment and had no idea who Richey Edwards was and now my life is forever changed lmao, I absolutely love his lyrics and just the band itself❤️
On the Road always reminds me of that one scene in Gilmore Girls where Paris and Jess are talking about books. Paris: "I have one word for Jack Kerouac: Edit"
@@alansong775 of course context matters but it's still messed up. Not to mention that isn't his only problem. This dude is highly problematic and yes they make great music but as a person he is insane in the worst way
THIS was the most satisfying thorough video THANKYOU sooo much for including the enriching context within each book and also how Matty uses them as references. I think matty has also recommended the short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" if you ever make a list for a part 2
5:04 I love how Jack explains lyrics. I want a reboot of ‘Music and Lyrics’ where either Jack plays himself or there’s an actor who plays him decoding English lyrics as literature.
I really like Jack Kerouac too, it’s so cool to see how the text sort of “changes” every time I read it. Each new read you find something new that wasn’t there. My fave is Dharma Bums, I like it more than on the road honestly. I prefer his later work compared to his earlier ones, I like how introspective he is in his narrative, looking back to a certain time of his life. Something I find really interesting :D
If you loved reading Rimbaud, I highly recommend you to read Baudelaire’s work as Rimbaud was hugely inspired by him ! “Les Fleurs du Mal” is his most well-known work and you will find some of the most stunning poetry you’ll ever read in your life
I'm seeing The 1975 live next week and this video is just perfect. Love the way you talk about the books and all the references to The 1975 songs across the video.
thank you so much for the representation jack, i also absolutely hated on the road, it was just ramblings and no editing I'm so mad I wasted three years trying to read this
These videos are giving me life, thanks sooo much for keeping them both fun and totally informative with such a detailed description without loosing the focus on the book/artist
I love A Season in Hell!!! Also, there’s a biopic about the relationship between Rimbaud and Verlaine called Total Eclipse, with Leonardo DiCaprio and David Thewlis. It’s really good and pretty accurate.
I enjoyed this so much! Will read the last two books as I’ve already read “On The Road”… I can hear you speak all day long and The 1975 lyrics puns were just amazing 💕✨
One of my very favorite Burroughs books is Cities of the Red Night. A 1981 apocalyptic sci fi novel where the population is afflicted by a radioactive virus. And I have seen him read multiple times. I love his musical collaborations with both Laurie Anderson and Kurt Cobain (Nirvana). I live his voice and delivery. There are many videos of him reciting and just talking. I miss you, Uncle Bill. RIP. Rimbaud’s poetry is terrific. Born in the 1850s. He got attention for writing as a child; the bulk of his work was done in his adolescent/young adult years and he stopped writing at age 20!!! He lived an adventurous life and was a gun runner. He died age 37. His bio is very interesting (as is Burroughs’s).
I was in a literature class about The Beat Generation and when I tell you I didn't understand a single book I read in that class....I didn't understand a single one. Especially On The Road by Jack🤧🤧
On the road was the first book i read in english when i was learning it (it's not my mother tongue). Changed my life at 16!! I felt so seen, i think we all crave that kind of freedom as a teen. HOWEVER, Kerouac wasn't the best person or role model. As I got older I explored other Beat authors that are amazing and not a piece of shit lol! would def recommend going further than Kerouac or Ginsberg if you're interested in the Beats at all
i love matty, i love the 1975, i love jack and i loved this video!!! your in-depth explanation's of the book and their relevance was brilliant jack. also: that commentary about william s. burroughs and not excluding him from the queer canon bc he's 'problematic' - such a mature perspective that i wish more people considered. (P.S. i was waiting for infinite jest lmao, i feel like matty references it in so many interviews)
I found my favourite book through “other voices” by the cure, and I believe Robert Smith uses plenty of books for lyric inspiration. I wouldn’t say he’s really a describe him as a “celebrity”, but he’s got pretty good taste and great lyrics!
Great video! Have been looking forward to this since you announced you were making it. Love The 1975, and I enjoy your celebrity book club videos. I'm a book nerd and a music nerd, so would love any videos you do on singers, songwriters, musicians...Thanks for the video! Going to be looking for the Rimbaud book.
This makes me SO uncurious about Matty Healy as this collection of books is aggressively unsavory. You, however, remain as savory as red pepper and cashew soup!
Poetic lyrics that are stunning and complex. I only know one of their songs and I guess it must be the exception that proves the rule !? "I only called her one time, maybe it was two times, don't think it was three times, can't be more than four times..." 🤣
loved the deep research and thank you for introducing me to the movement beat generation! leaving this video having learned something new about this world 😂
I LOVE finding more booktubers that are fans of The 1975. They're my favorite band of all time and I listen to them so much and I just love them so I was definitely excited to see this video pop up!
Once at a backpacker bar in Cambodia with that exact Kerouac quote on the wall, I took the bold stand that On the Road is lazy writing and then became known among the backpackers as “the woman who hates Kerouac.” Now I feel validated. Thank you. (*but I agree with your notes on historical context)
I love love love the inclusion of all these quotes! Though I think its unlikely I will add any of these books to my own TBR, a bit too masculine for me. Really cool to hear about though, gives some insight to The 1975’s lyrics which sounded sort of random to me previously.
@@worrywirt I don’t tend to care for books, such as these ones and other popular ones like Catcher in the Rye that are really coming from and focused on a traditionally masculine perspective. It doesn’t make them bad stories, I just don’t enjoy them myself with the occasional exception. Stories can absolutely be gendered, as long as they come from human beings who are choosing to tell their stories from gendered perspectives.
Jack, I love this channel so much. I trust your opinions. I would love to see you do a review on Hozier. And books he has recommended. Hozier is probably one of my favorite songwriters. He is a poet. And has wonderful taste.
great video, just letting you know that tumblrinas are well aware that on the road inspired supernatural and yes,we lose our minds because of it regularly :)
I love how after talking about the third book being a take on capitalism and how it makes life not about living but having, he directly goes into how he didn't love reading the book but was grateful to have read it haha
let’s not label matty healy as just “unhinged”, he made some pretty racist comments about ice spice quite recently and i’m tired of people just sweeping that under the rug
if you understand society of spectacle you'd understand how shallow your understanding of matt healy's public persona/his general disposition i think. he's in no way a racist lmao. read adolph reed
Loved this video and all the song references you got in! It would be so cool if you did like a viewer’s book club, where you read our favourite books and judge us based off them!
