I love her- deeply. I know, she's an extremely popular novelist. But for good reason. She's just so incredible at writing about..nothing.

I’ve heard a lot about My Year of Rest and Relaxation and I was intrigued by the thematic content, and based on what you’re saying it seems like all her books are such weird explorations of hyper-specific issues and afflictions and now I’m definitely interested in her and my tbr is outta hand thanks Gabe

I was looking to gauge other reactions to Eileen because I just finished it, and I'm glad to have discovered someone else who loves Otessa Moshfegh's writing style so much. I have seen a lot of criticism about her brutally honest and unabashed style but I think it is unique and jarring. I am a sucker for unreliable narration, desperation and dark comedy. You perfectly described my thoughts on how interesting she is! Eileen is also my favorite.

i've only read death in her hands, and i thought it was mindblowing. gotta read the rest of her stuff. i LOVE her writing style. it's gorgeous and timeless and economical... it doesn't feel like there's a wasted word, she says SO MUCH with every sentence I find. I also laughed out loud several times, but it also almost brought me to tears this video and discussion is excellent by the way

I am absolutely in love with the way you speak! SO much expression and intensity and passion! Thanks Gabriel. Enjoyed this. I just finished Death in her hands. Really enjoyed it. I have read all the others except McGlue. Moshfegh is so good. It’s rare that I find a contemporary writer that competes with the great writers of the past. But she is up there, she has the calibre.

This video was great! Ottessa is one of my all time favorites, one of few writers I keep tabs on closely and try to read their new stuff as it comes out. I’m re-reading My Year of Rest right now and it made me want to watch more moshfegh content so I’m glad it also led me to your channel! Could I suggest Akwaeke Emezi and Roberto Bolaño as other authors to add to your series? I would love your take on their catalogs! cheers x

Genuine question!! Looking for answers here… on page 234 of this book, Dr Tuttle asks her how her mother passed away and she says “I killed her” she supposedly “crushed oxycodone in her vodka” … did the narrator in my year of rest and relaxation kill her mom? I was so confused by this part because I couldn’t tell what was real and what wasn’t
@gabrielarmstrong1308
@gabrielarmstrong1308 2 года назад
She didn’t! It’s a running joke in the book that every time she sees her therapist she tells a new lie about how her parents died because Dr. Tuttle never remembers

Rest and relaxation is where I started and I think it’s a great way to learn her style, and it’s the one most people have read so you’ll have an easier time finding people to talk about it with. But now that it’s been a while since I read it I definitely think it’s not her strongest so if you do read it first and don’t like it i’d say try some of her other stuff before giving up on her work!

Otessa Moshfegh is a great writer. I would read anything she writes. She is a genius and she is not afraid to push boundaries. I think Vesta is out of touch with reality. Vesta is Magdna. Her mind is unravelilng. She was horribly abused by her late husband. I don't even belive she has a dog or a radio with a Preacher on the radio.

As someone who regularly helps an elderly member of my family empty their stoma bag I don't think the fetishising of body fluids and emissions as somehow shocking is particularly useful or authentic. Moshfegh suffers from what Marx would call alienation from what are normal, not-that-gross-really bodily functions. She strikes me as a weird mix of gross-out comedy, popular gore (Saw/Hostel films) and Beckettian literature.
