I read EXTREME horror books for a week and cried myself to sleep
Hello Creeps! I wanted to film another week long reading vlog where I read a few extreme horror books. I really enjoyed these and Gone to See the River Man really got me in the fall mood. These books varied from intensity from It's Me, Charlie to Talia. But I think my favorite this week was His Pain. Let me know if you've read any of these books and what I should read next.

Poorly written Extreme Horror books remind me of that South Park episode when the boys collaborated to write the most offensive book ever.

Love your channel! I want to preface this by saying I'm not here to try to get you to change your mind on His Pain. I actually went to pick up a copy of it because of your review. Enjoying both the read and the message you got from it is totally fine! I just wanted to offer a different perspective on a specific topic in the book. As someone who is recovering from post-concussive syndrome and (ironically) who worked on biomedical devices to help people with head injuries, I thought the message in His Pain about the woo-woo treatment was questionable. At least where I am in the USA, people with head injuries or related neurological issues are often told to just "try meditation and therapy" instead of getting proven treatments or medications. This is because medical systems want to make money, and the most profitable thing is surgery. Most treatments and medications are not nearly as profitable. This is partly why I went into my line of work to begin with. The woo-woo thing is a focal point of the book, and the author didn't offer any nuanced takes on it. I wish he had since gotten philosophical about other things.

"His Pain" intrigued me so much, I actually bought the book digitally and read it all in one go with this video still open on another tab. Having read so many horrible things on the Internet over the years, I don't really get disturbed by descriptions of physical violence or gore anymore, so the aspect of the book that really surprised me was how psychological and philosophical it was. I don't want to spoil anything, especially since this book is so short, but as you said in your review, that one paragraph really makes you stop and think. It's hard to recommend this book to anyone, but this story is definitely more than just shock value for the sake of shock value. Thank you for making this video, I'm definitely subscribing and will most likely be checking out more of these messed up books in the future.

If you enjoyed Kristopher Triana's writing, I would HIGHLY recommend his other book, The Thirteenth Koyote (and its sequel, Ballad of the Werevixens). They are both lengthy - 500+ pages - but SO GOOD. They are in the extreme horror/western genre. There is also a sequel to Gone to See the River Man titled Along the River of Flesh that is on my list to read soon.

I have read some truly bleak, disturbing hardboiled crime fiction from the Hard Case Crime label: Little Girl Lost, Songs of Innocence (both by Richard Aleas), and both Money Shot, and Choke Hold by Christa Faust. These are not remotely enjoyable books, but dark, depressing, and personally, I needed some beers and a breather after. Money Shot is the "cheeriest" of the four, by far.

I thought "gone to see the river man" was great. I thoroughly enjoyed (for want of a better word) the book and the sequel "along the river of flesh" was my most anticipated book of this year. I read it yesterday and it's one of my least favourite books of all time. It's basically a retelling of the first book, but not nearly as well-written and with stupid amounts of gore that is clearly just for shock value and doesn't add anything to the plot. it seems like it was meant to be more disturbing than the first book, but because of how stupid and unoriginal it all was, i just rolled my eyes the whole time before giving it one star. I wouldn't even waste your time reading it.

Been binge watching all these extreme horror books readings youve posted
@donventura2116
@donventura2116 11 месяцев назад
I'm new to the genre but imo extreme horror is the latest version of splatterpunk which has its own history, which could help you understand this new genre. Extreme horror is mostly the same as regular horror but the gore, sex, and violence are simply described to obscene levels in an attempt to disturb and disgust. Disturb and disgust often being the higher priority over dread and terror. Over the top scenes take center stage and I think that leads many writers to have unbalanced stories where awful things are described purely for shock-factor. Your challenge will be balancing the vile horror spectacles with a story that can bring meaning and contextualize the obscenities. Because the genre is so anti-subtle it seems tough to write for. A good film comparison would be Evil Dead and Blair Witch. Cartoonish hyper-violence vs quiet dread and minimal violence.
@ArtyDeez
@ArtyDeez 11 месяцев назад
@donventura2116 hmm, ok. So, for example, if my antagonist were to torture the protagonist, the difference between regular and extreme horror is how in depth I get in its description, such as the breaking of bones and tearing of flesh. I'm asking to make sure I don't seem hokey, as while the story is pretty rough, I'm not wanting people to think I'm being grotesque for the sake of disgusting my audience. The horrific moments have a very important reason. The disgusting nature of the antagonist shows how far she's gone. You get my drift
@AndaKent
@AndaKent 11 месяцев назад
I'm not sure if this helps but as a reader of extreme horror, not a writer of it, the books in this video were enjoyable because the over the top and excessive sexual (i.e. incest, nonconsensual acts) and gory nature added to the story/characters. They help to develop the character arc, or lack there of, and enhance the plot.
@ArtyDeez
@ArtyDeez 11 месяцев назад
@AndaKent oh, thank you for your input! I will say the story im writing is really rough. I'm just not wanting it to be too rough as to be seen as campy. The violence, the torture, and the very non-consensual touching all have a meaning. All of this is something the protagonist has grown up with. It's a life he has tried endlessly to escape from, and the story shows him a possible way out, only for the whole roof to fall on him in the end. The other important reason for all of it is to show how truly irredeemable the antagonist is. She was from a religious family and has gone the absolute opposite way into hate-filled depravity, to where all the horrible things she does brings legitimate tears of joy down her face. Sorry for the word dump. Appreciate your input a lot!
@donventura2116
@donventura2116 11 месяцев назад
@@ArtyDeez My two cents on how to avoid that campy feel is to indicate the emotional reaction of your protagonist or antagonist. If you're able to write their thoughts, then one or two lines about from either perspective can elevate a scene from torture for the sake of it to a meaningful character insight. Even if you can't show the thoughts, you can use dialogue to show what another character thinks of the other. If you can't fit any thoughts or actions into the middle of the scene, you can try to add a character moment at the end of the scene to reflect on the torture. From a structural standpoint, the scene can be used as a setup or payoff. One idea is to setup the protagonist's hubris or use foreshadowing and a reversal so that the torture occurs as a direct consequence of a protagonist's hubris/mistake to contextualize the violence. Sounds like you're able to connect the current torture to past trauma and events. That's a great setup to explore the relationship between protagonist and antagonist or how the protagonist is familiar with the pain and feels they're trapped in a horrible cycle. Do they pity themselves, sink into despair, or is the event a catalyst for breaking out the cycle? I think you're headed in the right direction.

Wow… I finished Gone to See the River Man last night and it was so much deeper than I thought it would be. I expected a straightforward and violent extreme horror story but shit got DEEP. I’m still processing how I feel about the whole thing but I can def say it’s super unique and unlike anything I’ve read so far. Very impressed and can’t wait to dive into more Kristopher Triana stories

as a constant horror reader myself, 100 pages a day is a good goal. that's awesome u do it! Id say im around 50 pages a day. I'm currently reading Hidden Pictures by Jason ReKulak. a recovering addict gets hired to babysit a sensitive boy. He draws pictures that get more sinister and detailed :o not bad so far. id also recommend Perfect Nightmare by John Saul.

I read Maeve Fly because you inspired me to and I'm so glad I did!!!! I think I'm slowly getting into extreme horror and it's a wild ride, for sure!!!! 😅

"His pain" made me feel lonely, like i wanted someone to understand my pain too. Its good writing that made me relate and empathize my unrelated trauma to his. I read it all in one sitting, because i was enthralled.

I was blown away by how much character development Kristopher Triana managed to get in such a short story. The twist definitely bothered and disturbed me because it hit too close to home but I thought it was a very good and complete narrative story. I had a hard time figuring out how to rate it because the contents bothered me but the writing was well done, so I split the difference and gave it a. 3.5/5.

It's definitely hard to rate books like these. They just don't really fit into a 5 star scale like most books do haha. And I agree. The main character was so interesting.

Glad to see you enjoyed the riverman book. Made me sick, but it felt deeper than most horror I've read. The only issue I had was the way the characters spoke to one another felt horribly stilted at times.

My favorite extreme horror is a novella called What Good Girls Do. Jesus, that novella both horrified me and made me cry so much. Another I liked was The Groomer by Jon Athan. I just got done reading The Girl Next Door and I thought it started slow but dang, once it started? Definitely rough. I think I'm the only person that really liked Yellow by Aron Beauregard (idk if I spelled that right). I just started Gone to See the River Man.

I'm wondering if at some point you could make a video recommending extreme horror books that don't contain upsetting sexual content? I'm a big horror fan and am curious and want to get more into extreme horror books but every single one of them that I've come across always has extremely upsetting sexual scenes involving pedophilia or rape or whatever that I just don't want to read about.
@AndaKent

Totally understand. Yeah, most of them are sexual in some way but the more I read, the more I'll be able to recommend specific categories. I'll keep you updated!

The way you described how you enjoy the wording of some of these books really compels me to recommend "The Cipher", by Kathe Koja; I just finished reading it over the week, and it definitely should be up your alley. Kind of reminds me of something Clive Barker would write, but more "poetic", I guess. Either way, the book is pretty dark, and not much like anything else I've read, so I definitely recommend it if you haven't already read the book!

You should read ''suicidas by raphael montes'', Realy good book! I dont know if theres any english translations yet, But i realy recommend this book ! Its extreme, really extreme.... The title would be suicidals in english, but i dont really know if there is an english version. I think its the type of book you would like because its... well, i cant find words to describe it .... Its about a group of teenagers that are planing to commit suicide and the book goes back and forth between the mothers of them in a police station and the teenagers in the past going to commit suicide. This isint a spoiler at all!!!! The book tells you this in the back cover!!!!

I really enjoyed River Man but I feel like it’s barely “Extreme Horror” IMO. The whole time reading it I was expecting more “extreme” things to happen and they never came… So maybe it’s a good gateway book into extreme horror if anyone is nervous about trying one.
