Welcome to Houseki no Kuni! We have: Quite a lot of depressed rocks A manipulative b stard An annoying rock who is annoying to the point that I really want to grab a sledgehammer and smash him to pieces Strange humanoid jellyfish things Tsundere rock A broke machine who has a ps5 for a brother Weird ass body horror Oh yeah last but not the least: suffering, lots and lots of suffering
@@Oueenazolatigressgina it's so sad cuz they were literally my favorite until Mr. Crusty performed his moon lobotomy Edit: and most of Crusty and Cairn's relationship was still so viscerally uncomfortable because Cairn barely even understood the concept of having a gender or sexuality, yet the moon people never failed to push their ideas on how Cairn should present their self instead of properly explaining the concepts and allowing Cairn to choose their own identity. Cairn just went along with all of it because of their obsession with Achmea. For God's sake, they barely had an idea of what MARRIAGE was before they were plopped in front of an alter and made into Crusty's "perfect little wife." They only ever been given the illusion of choice by Crusty instead of true free will. I can never be truly made to believe that he ever actually cared for Cairn or their well-being. He was only manipulating them in order to further traumatize and isolate Phos for his larger plan. Or to use them as a pretty little plaything to distract him from his dull, unchanging life. Because he's forever sad and Crusty.
@@ditzyrose700 true, I still wonder what Cairn would have been like if the pieces of Ghost wasn't in his eyes, both Cairngorm and Ghost are the victims in this case. Not to mention I read this fanfiction(cause I was bored out of my mind so don't mind me) where the partner of a guy, who was basically a yandere on crack, fell in love because of literal Stockholm syndrome, that enraged me to no end but Aechmea and Cairngorm's relationship....that was messed up on so many ways I didn't even know was possible
@@Oueenazolatigressgina I wonder if Adamant left the pieces in Cairngorm's eyes because he knew that one would not know how to function without the other. It would've been nice for Cairn to get a chance to live as their own person with the Earth gems for a while. The other gems would've at least been more supportive of their identity crisis- though living in their society comes with plenty of traumas of its own. Cairn might've been able to hold their own against some of Achmea's grooming. 🤢
Houseki no kuni is the only anime i WISH was continued as a animated series, such a shame, the whole anime and story are just masterpieces,And the animated show was just PERFECT
I feel like LOTL's art is to most manga what poetry is to prose. Yea, it's serving a function, but it often seems non-literal, or done as much for the motion of the moment as for the utility for the narrative. Also: as much as the story is about identity, it's also about trauma, and how sometimes, what doesn't kill you makes you Worse, in some way. Phos loses themselves over the course of the story. Moment-to-moment they might stay on task, but the reasons why they're doing what they are are forgotten, to the point where Phos starts taking actions against their original intentions. Phos's progression isn't growth. Yes, they become more skilled as they go, but the things they've lost along the way...
Phos is the most mentally abused protagonist in the limited area of stories I have read. It's extremely painful to read each chapter once things get going, but I simply can't stop, it's so well done!
i love how in the manga you cant be angry at anyone, because everybody has a reason to do what they did, i cant be angry at anybody in the manga, i can only just be angry. i cant be angry and cairngorm ditching phos because they were being controlled, i cant be angry at the lunarians because the gems caused their pain, i cant be angry at adamant because he loves his gems, the list goes on. i think its just a wonderful thing that they made a manga with no bad character, they are all good.
OH MY GOD you don't know how much I've craved for this... Sufferents is FINALLY covering my favorite manga, I'm so happy ;-; Also while I do see that this is a manga review, I simply ADORE the anime adaption. It fixed some of the problems you stated, and it was just downright GORGEOUS. Hesitated watching it at first since it was 3DCG, but I can now say with confidence that it is also my favorite anime :)
I was the same!!! when it was airing i was hesitant too, because it was 3DCG and i was afraid it was going to be like Berserk or Ex-Arm. But then i gave the first ep a try and i was instantly pulled in, then i saw some documentary about the making of the anime and how they worked quite a lot just to get the reflexion of the hair right, but was also easier to make the character models since they have the same body type and only the head that to be changed. It's an anime and manga that's been in my top 3 for so many years. (also another anime done in good 3DCG is Dorohedoro by studio MAPPA and is just so good)
Land of the lustrous was similar to Tokyo ghoul to me, which is probably why I was hooked onto the manga and phos as a character. With the manga finally coming out of hiatus, I cannot wait to see what’s in store. Happy you finally read it!!!
interesting theory I found the other day. many long time fans will know it I'm sure but for anyone who's new like me have a read. You know how HnK has plenty of Buddhist references and narratives, well the Seven Treasures of the Lotus Sutra is just another one. It says that there are seven gemstones that represent faith, perseverance, sense of shame, avoidance of wrongdoing, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. These gemstones vary according to translation and the specific Sutra, but they’re usually identified in: suvarṇa (金, gold) and rūpya (銀, silver) vaiḍūrya (琉璃, aquamarine / lapis lazuli) sphaṭika (頗梨, crystal) musāragalva (硨磲, conch shell / white coral) lohita-muktikā (赤珠, ruby / red pearl) aśmagarbha(瑪瑙, carnelian) If you look at Phos, they’re a Treasure in the making: they acquired shell legs, gold arms, a lapis head, a pearl eye and their original body was made of crystal. The only addition needed now is the last one, carnelian The original word referred to any red gem though and, well, Padparadscha is a red gem and they have already said that they would give their whole being to see that Phos’ mission is successful
I LOVE this anime and manga series so much and like HxH I'm STOKED it's comin back. If anyone reads this I'd recommend starting with the anime and continuing on from there into what's left of the manga so it becomes easier to distinguish everything and the anime is just BEUTIFUL itself so its worth it regardless I feel
I’ve seen this in a couple comments (about land coming back) is there some announcement I missed? As far as I am aware there are no new chapters right now.
I wish they continued Houseki no kuni as a show, because the anime was just SOO FRICKIN GORGEOUS,the crystal hair, the movements, the cg the voice acting, the intro and outro, its just soo beautiful
@@bestdadoftheyear7181 same but the studio is currently busy with beastars and CG anime takes forever to produce so If we do get another it'll still take awhile
I have all current volumes (11) and it's on the top shelf for a reason. I adore this series and how breathtaking it is. I highly recommend the anime too, shit was so good I bought the limited edition BD. I just wish more people would give the manga/anime a chance
Oh, my favorite manga being covered! Land of lustrous is one of those I read and it change me. I guess it was what I expected to experienced with Shingeki, that sensation after you finish Devilman Crybaby and you just watch the credits while behold so many things
Happily surprised more chapters will be out soon! The latest one could serve as an ending, but a terribly depressing one at that for our beloved, warped protagonist.
This, tomorrow’s Joe and Yotsuba are all tied as my fav manga🙏 I have all 11 volumes so far and I can not wait for the new chapter to drop. That cliffhanger hurt😭
Best Manga and best main character ever .never seen a development so fucking amazing and deep like phos . So exited for the new chapters but it's a shame it will take years to see the end
This manga is maybe my favorite right after Girls Last Tour Both of them is pretty similar too, the world is empty and the main characters will reveal what happened before throughout their Journey
Houseki no kuni is my favorite story. EVER. Having been immersed in it for years now, i dont see all of your complaints, but i can still understand them. To anyone reading this, read it. Do it. You have nothing to lose and an incredible experience to gain. See you all when chapter 96 finally hits.
Great video and perspective on the whole story without really spoiling much. I was so happy I picked this story up when I did because it was such an enjoyable read and really makes you think about a lot of philosophical questions. I always found the hurdle getting into it to be eased with the anime, which is also spectacular in its own right. To anyone looking to get into Land of the Lustrous that’s not a bad place to start.
land of the lustrous is one of if not my most fav anime/manga, as a artist myself it's just amazing how much work is put into everything the manga and anime are a work of art, i cannot wait from more chapters to come out
I watched the anime first and then jumped on the manga, which made it very digestible. I would recommend it this way. And also, it´s true that the characters are pretty hard to distinguish, but I think the core of that is that it lacks the colors. If the anime continues, I honestly think that it would be my top 3 anime ever.
I really liked the points about identity that you brought up. I'm a very androgynous dude, but that's an element of myself that I really don't like talking or exploring with other people- so when I saw that all the characters went by he/them, I was very pleasantly surprised. However, I didn't give it much more thought than that. I think mostly because the people I surround myself with would be weirded out by my takes on gender so I try and not think about it at all. But seeing you so strongly state that identity was your main takeaway and that it is represented in the presentation of gender with the characters makes me think I'll open myself up to that a bit more. So, thank you for that.
I really appreciate how much you emphasize that none of the characters are perfect and that Phos makes many mistakes. Too many people read this manga and come out of it insisting that Phos did absolutely nothing wrong, which is both demonstrably false and completely misses the point entirely. No one in this series is innocent and no one is generically evil either. Someone might have good intentions, but that doesn't always translate into good actions.
Thanks for talking about this manga, I think it doesn't get as much recognition as it should. I won't say it's the best manga I've read (tho for me it is), but it's my favourite one, the best part being Phos, as you said.
I remember watching and reading this a couple of years back when the anime had just come out. This is the one thing that made me understand the feeling of existential dread first hand.
morga and goshe were my favorite characters, they were so pretty and reminded me of pearl and rose quartz for some reason, then I read the manga chapter 48 🥰.
I love how at the end you said "this is a story that will take a lot of time" ... I picked up the manga aroun where anime left off sometime in the afternoon one day and literally inhaled it. I could not get up from my chair to stop reading it and go to the toilet or to bed. By 3 am, ma suffering ahs ended, I have finished the story my little tired brain going over what theck just happened when thinking about the last few chapters. I was a rollercoaster of emotions and I loved every second of it.
HUNTER X HUNTER IS BACK! LAND OF THE LUSTROUS IS BACK! BLUE LOCK IS GETTING AN ANIME! YAS! I'll chill before hurting myself, I learned that much from the stories
houseki no kuni is among my favourites. I went in innocently, only knowing that it was 3D animated. It had been in the back of my mind since its release, but I never got into it until suddenly I saw one of the characters randomly. That moment I dropped everything and decided to open it up. Little did I know only 12 hours later I would be left in shambles. I read it all in one sitting, which was probably not the best idea of mine out there, but growing so attached to Phos only to have that love for them wrenched in the cruelest of ways so quickly really left a large impression on me. To see how fast their descent was, despite being over the course of a very long time in canon, destroyed me. I want nothing more than for phos to have a happily ever after, but I'm afraid I wont get that. If you haven't read houseki yet, please do. It's my go to recommendation for manga. It's on the short side, has a lot of unique interesting elements, and lots of good characters to grow attached to.
I'm currently a bit obsessed with this title after watching the anime, so well done. There is one thing you said that I can't agree with, it's about equality among gems, there is none. They are divided by their usefulness determined by their physical durability, weak gems are not encouraged to fight but rather occupy themselves with other tasks. And this is where I think the story is coming together because you can't be something you want to be due to the circumstances of your birth, you either accept it or try to go against the current and see if this predetermined 'destiny' can be changed.
honestly the way to get started with this manga is watch anime first because its very hard to go through it with how out of loop the world of hnk is,even with anime it took me 5 episodes to slightly understand world building
I've been following this story since 2015. The highs hit good, and the lows hit painful. I grew up with this series, with phos, so I am bias to say I am in deep with this series. To be encapsulated by this world is t the very reason of my existence. I love land of the lustrous, I love phos. Beautiful bittersweet story, everyone should at least check out the anime.
Tbh i always kinda took it as Phos wanting to help everyone and making their mark but being too weak to do it But then when he lost a part of himself and it was replaced it was seen as good because before his weakness made him feel like a burden So he was ready to lose more of himself for others till the original Phos was only a piece mixed in with all the other new pieces kind like the pen question how if you keep taking it apart and putting it back together with new part when will the pen be considered a completely different pen Phos lost himself and took the sins of all others to become a new human
