just like with the movies, the first two really are more aimed towards children. like my friend and i were talking about this and she really pinpointed it: the first books were almost roald dahl-like, the series kind of matured alongside those who were kids when the first book came out. but for those who want to do a more "adult"-reading of the first two books, my british uncle considers HP to be a scathing criticism of the british school/class-system. so reading it from that lense gives the first books more depth and has dimensions that those of us who aren't british might otherwise miss. and yesss it's really worth it for the later books.
Harry Potter is definitely worth reading and carrying on. The first 2 books are written like they are for children and are kind of light-hearted but they get a lot more adult as they progress. Not in a spicy way but they follow less with the trope of "good guys investigate mystery, they solve the mystery and everyone is happily ever after". There is more complexity, heartbreak and is a lot darker. Definitely worth finishing.
I would love to see that! She talked about doing that with to all the boys I loved before but then she didn’t in the end which is fine, but I would like to see that if she wants to do it!
I LOVE the Percy Jackson series! I’m actually rereading it right now and I never reread books. Im 24 and only read it for the first time 2 years ago but it has taken my whole heart. Percy might just be my favorite fictional male of all time
I LOVE Percy and I think I agree with you. I used to have a massive crush on him lol. I read the Percy Jackson series around the same age as you, I'm 27 now and I finally feel like I reached an age where I don't feel like I could re-read it like I used to, sadly.. But it's still so dear to me. So def enjoy it while you can!
In case you aren't aware, there's 4 other mythology series by Rick Riordan, some of which are spinoffs/other mythologies like Egypt and Norse, but there's also sequel series to Percy Jackson, which is "Heroes of Olympus" and then "Trials of Apollo" Could not recommend more if you enjoyed Percy Jackson
Haleyyyy I feel like harry potter is one of the only book series that cannot be overhyped!!!!!! Literally read it, it's awesome. I think book 2 is super enjoyable but 3 and up are my favs.
3rd book with the introduction of Sirius Black was a game changer. The one thing I found weird though was that there was a lot of “in breeding” in the group. Like with that much shared trauma I would not want to see the group for a couple of years. And honestly, it never seemed to be apparent until the movie cast came along. Like honestly Hermoine could have done better than Ron or Harry. It mainly happened because Emma and Rupert had some chemistry in the initial movies.
i love the fact that when I started watching this channel there were no book stacks let alone a bookshelf and now you have your little library coming along, it's so adorable.
I would definitely say that the first two Harry Potter books are worth it to get to the rest of the series. I wasn't obsessed with them either, but prisoner of azkaban (3rd book) is one of my favorites of the entire series. It really only gets better from there. Have so so much fun with it !!!
@@user-ce4sn5jf9c i get that completely. I reread deathly hallows this year at 19 and still enjoyed it so much, but that may be coming from a place of nostalgia. I do feel though that the writing is somewhat timeless. I think you should just give it a shot with POA and assess from there! I don't think it'll let you down :)
I started rereading Percy Jackson for the third time after your last video. I adore it. The romance is so sweet. I’m 33 and i never get tired of these lol. I’m on the second book now. 😊
The first two Harry Potter books are really magical and get you really introduced to the world, from their it definitely gets darker but that is what hooks me so much because you see so much character development and watch them grow up, I would highly recommend it my favorite series 💕
Hyped books tend to be overrated. They're constantly being advertised as the best books that could potentially be on anyone's radar. However I do have some faith that these types of books aren't always a massive disappointment. There are so many great authors all around the world that need more overseas recognition. Thanks for this video, Haley. We all trust you for all of your book recommendations. Best of luck to you in your future endeavors.
If the book is objectively bad and is still hyped up then i agree that it is overrated. There are some books that are really hyped up for a reason, a good book is a good book. I tend to watch recommended books videos and if a specific book is talked about a lot between different channels then I'll try to get that book. The pictures of dorian gray is one of those 😁
I agree. I read the first book AOTAR and I couldn't finish it honestly I think it was overrated. The writing style was smooth and good but I hated feyre I couldn't understand why the author made her think like that or act like that so yeah it was kinda disappointing I dropped it halfway.
I noticed that the best books are usually the ones that have their own little-but-big-enough kind of circle. You know what I mean? The ones like Better Than The Movies, Jenny Han books, Jenny Colgan. They’re kinda popular but overlooked
A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis is so worth reading if you haven’t yet! Really got me through some tough times. I know he scratched that itch I needed at the time too! Love to see the C.S. Lewis love here!
I became a fan of the series once I reached Goblet of Fire. The character development and emotional tragic backstories of the characters in the second half of the series is brilliant.
I got intrigued in the 1st one only and as I proceeded to read the following books. I felt more and more attached to them. When I reached the 5th one, I realized, oh no! There are only 2 left, I gotta be slow! I gotta be slow! since I knew it was gonna end very soon and I did not want to let it go. The best time of my life was the winter break in which I binge read it.
girl the Harry Potter book series is so GOOD, like you can’t be bored reading those, the 1 and the 2 are kinda like an introduction and then you get all the MAGIC and it will become your home !! You’ll also CRY A LOT, so prepare yourself
@@nfrankiksa4596 yes i think, you’ll rediscover some characters (like Ginny) and learn more about this whole universe, so I think yes u should but it’s up to you
In the first two Harry Potter books, everyone is still pretty young, so you're still getting to know everyone in a way that sets up the remainder of the series. It really is a magical experience throughout, and from a Harry Potter enthusiast, it does get better book by book (albeit books 3 and 4 are my favourites). It becomes darker as the books go on, nearly exactly in accordance with their ages as they grow older. A vlog on your hp reading experience would be sick!!
For ACOSF the last two hundred pages made the entire book. Having a sister made this story so personal for me and Nesta's realizations and growth throughout made my heart so full. As much as I loved Feyre, Nesta's spitfire and fierce nature makes her character so powerful.
Harry Potter is probably the best series I’ve ever read. It has mystery but also some romance and humor and once you start it i feel like there is no point not to go on
I agree I just finished ACOSF and I feel like the spice is repetitive but totally skippable, this wrapped up so nice, I loved all the character growth, and I think Nestas story is my favorite. But I agree if beyond the spice it’s not your cup of tea, spend time reading books you are more interested in.
I just started the Court of thorns and roses series (because of you 😅) and I’m in LOVE! I’m so happy it’s one of the books that actually live up to the hype
Especially as we are entering the fall/winter seasons and holidays - READ HARRY POTTER. It’s so magical and like a hug, and all the characters become your friends (or your nemesis) and the books often involve fall/autumnal vibes and Christmas vibes 🤍 It’s the perfect season to read them.
A court of Silver Flames was actually my favorite book of them all !! The writing is beautiful, new connections are made with characters that were difficult to understand throughout the first 4 books. I thought I would hate it but it was absolutely necessary to read 🙏🏼
oh my goooodness haley your description of C.S Lewis' non-fiction is EXACTLY how I feel about his writing too! i could never explain it properly but you hit it on the head! soooo dang good.
I totally agree with you about CS Lewis' writing! It's hard to digest sometimes because he has a lot to say, so I need to reread many paragraphs for it to really sink in. But man, his analogies are just... chef's kiss! I'm always like "YES! Exactly!" But could never formulate them myself so eloquently.
I’m in my Haley Pham Era. Defly my comfort youtuber, the only youtuber, the most amazing youtuber I’ve watched. Thank you Haley for being you! And inspiring us even if it’s just books. I pray God continues to bless you and give you strength and open other doors for you! Love you Haley!
Harry Potter DEFINITELY goes up from the first and the second book, once you get to the third one the plot gets a lot more interesting complex and it feels less like a children’s book. I wish I could read it again for the fist time cs its still one the best series ive read, you should so continue!!
I definitely recommend reading the entire Harry Potter series because it gets really good . I think book 2 is a little slow but book 3 and 4 are my favourite. Btw I love ur videos so much and you have inspired me to get back into my reading so thankyou soo much❤️❤️
I highly recommend His Dark Materials, read the original trilogy years ago and still try and read them every year, especially in the winter. One of the few books where I find myself thinking of the characters every now and then 👍
haley always manages to get me away from the bed and infront of the bookshelf to continue my current reads. thank you for the constant reading motivation
Percy Jackson is so good, but I understand that not a lot of people really enjoy it. The first two books are decent but definitely not the best in the series but the rest in the Percy Jackson series are SO GOOD. In the 3rd book things start to get real and more intense and the next ones in the series are amazing. Although, there are three series in total for the Percy Jackson universe (there are 2 other series in the same universe that meet some of the characters from Percy Jackson, but those books are about other things) which is honestly a lot but it’s so good when you finish it.
You should really read the Twisted Tale series! It is a Disney “what if” series. For example, one of the books is “What if Aladdin never found the lamp?” I’ve read three of the books and I love them
Soo about the Harry Potter series...it gets soooo much better from here. I think that all books in the series are awesome, but the further you go with the series it just goes better and better and BETTER. Basically, I reccomend it a lot😊😊😊
You should continue reading the spin off of Caraval. "Once upon a broken heart" and "The ballad of never after" are my favorite books. It feels like you are living on a fairytale. Jacks it's such a mesmerizing and sarcastic character. And Evangeline is a cinnamon roll main lead. Highly recommend 👌
"Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets" is my favourite HP book. It's a mystery and for me is a pure fun to read. When I was little I read it 7 times in one week. Best time of my life😄💚
i feel like my favourite book in harry potter book series is the second one, but the others are also amazing just like some of them are a little slower paced than the others I love it as a kid and still do PLEASE CONTINUE THE SERIES!!!!!!!
'His Dark Materials' is a fantastic trilogy of books to read. It's like a teen book with a great mix of fantasy that appeals to younger readers, and some strong emotional, philosophical and theology themes for adult readers. I found it fascinating that I first read the books at 12, then again (multiple times) in my 20s. It felt like two very different stories that evoke totally new and thought provoking feelings each time. Bonus that if you listen to the audiobook, there is a whole cast of voice actors (i think that's the term?) for each character. It's also narrated by the author himself, Philip Pullman.
U should definitely read the rest of the Harry Potter series.. the book 1 is kinda slow paced unlike the rest.. It gets very hyped up from book 3 which happen to b my fav book from the entire series.. plz make a Harry Potter & twilight series reading vlog..
HALEY please keep reading Percy Jackson I also didn’t like book 1 or 6 for that matter BUT I read all the other books in a week and could not put them down! I would love to see you continue the series
You should definitely finish Harry Potter, the books just get better. I reread them all so many times and I'm always surprised by the growth in maturity of the characters and you get an insight into their emotions that they don't have time to delve into in the movies
If you want to read more historical fiction , you should read salt to the sea by Ruta Sepetys! The chapters are really short and it’s one of my favorites :)
Yes!! Ruta Sepetys is such an amazing historical fiction writer, so much research goes into her books and she tends to shed light on historical events that I had no idea about!
One of the first historical fiction books I fell in love with was Code Name Verity by Elizabeth E. Wein, it's about two young girls during WWII! Highly recommend!
The first two Harry Potter books are good but the third books is literal perfection. It just gets better and better. Please read it, it made my childhood. You are right Harry Potter just screams fall especially Hogwarts in the movies. It so exciting to see all the characters you romantize to see in television. The series just screams FALL. Plus there is a morally grey character who made the stans life. Read it. I've read so many of your favourite books like the cruel prince, etc. but the nostalgia Harry Potter gives is great. (btw I do know it. I separates art from the artist.)
Harry Potter is my ultimate go...everytime I feel I am down...all I have to do is to pick one of the books and my heart starts singing... absolutely in love with this
yes i totally recommend harry potter. i think the first two books introduce you to the actual story line but each book kind of has its own story and its really great and enteraining
I think I commented about the second Harry Potter book a couple days ago but, I just recently read it for the first time and it was really good ! It’s still building to the whole story but I enjoyed the second book a lot. I’ve just started the 3rd so I’ll probably have more to say very soon lol
Harry Potter is a series that only gets better as you read each book, it’s my favorite series of all time. It definitely deserves the hype it gets, in my personal opinion. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series. Don’t read the cursed child, that book is awful and no one considers it as canon.
This is so interesting to hear someone explain their experience with Harry Potter. There is nothing like Harry Potter. That book series got me through my childhood lol.
I am incredibly grateful that I read Acotar before I really got into booktok because it meant i went into the series spoiler free and I felt like I could really enjoy it
Please read 'once upon a broken heart' and 'the ballad of never after' next!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love your video's they've gotten me back into reading and those 2 book were just *chef's kiss* and i really think you'll enjoy them
Hi Haley I love you. You should definitely read the rest of the Harry Potter series. If you want to read more historical fiction you should read some Alan Gratz books bc there’s a lot of historical fiction especially about world war 2. Also please read the lunar chronicles it is so good!
Lots of people hate on the second Harry Potter book. I think it’s good! It’s not the best in the series but it’s still good. And then it skyrockets and is crazy good.
If you liked it ends with us by colleen hoover, get the second book 'it starts with us ' (comes out October 18th)! Btw love your channel and i have read a lot of books you have recommended
I love how you give reviews without any spoilers!!!! I'm on #3 of ACOTAR and I felt like I wasn't spoiling anything for myself by listening to the review haha
I love the Percy Jackson series! It introduced me to fantasy fiction, and you should push through; the third and fourth book are amazing, and I personally loved the other series in the riordanverse! After Percy Jackson, you should try Heroes of Olympus and Trials of Apollo, the second and third series in the camp half blood series in the riordanverse.
I love the Harry Potter books! If anything, you could save the rest of the series for when you need a video idea and just do a reading vlog where you read them all. Each one takes place during a year, so you get to grow up with the characters and witness some sad/darker things (nothing too dark though) but also cute/funny things like their first crushes and kisses! There’s so many interesting things like an intense wizard tournament, winter dance, secret organizations, even a war (but again, nothing too intense to be intimidated by). And unless you’ve already heard spoilers, there’s definitely a lot more plot twists! 💚
If u want a fall book you should read A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks! it’s a romance/coming of age and it’s sooo good. Had me in tears at the end but worth it!
If you feel interested in Percy Jackson but want a more adult series, I would recommend some of Rick Riordans other myth-based books, like Magnus Chase. It’s based on Norse mythology. (Vikings) If you are specifically interested in Greek mythology, you could probably just skip ahead to Heroes of Olympus, which has much higher stakes, and all of the characters are much older.
Since you asked for historical fiction recs you should check out Ruta sepetys all it was are super interesting, easy to read, the characters are so interesting, the plot always takes place during real events (but the stories and characters weren’t real) and there’s always a small romance sub plot
As someone who also loves CS Lewis and wants to read everything he has written I really appreciate you saying that you didn’t understand many of his references in “Surprised By Joy”! As a booktuber I could understand you might have felt pressure to act like you totally understand everything in that book but he was brilliant and lived in a different age and place so of course we won’t get it all and your saying that helped give me permission to feel and say that too. So thank you for that! 😊
I personally feel like Harry Potter starts to get really good in the third book but most people say it's the fourth book for them. Regardless I think you should finish the series
Love you vlog and book vlog, Looks like your going to need a new bookshelf soon which is great I think because you are reading and having a great time reading, :)
Ender's Game is great (although the comments section here clearly is unaware of that fact), and if you like the "deeper" themes you found in it, 'Speaker for the Dead' (one of its two sequels) is perhaps the most impactful book I've ever read. I absolutely love it. I'm glad you found Ender; I encountered him for the first time almost 20 years ago and he still inspires me. :)
Harry Potter series is totally worth reading. In my opinion it's getting better and better mostly. Keep in mind that you actually can see the characters grow and of course the themes getting more serious kinda. Hope you give it a shot and enjoy the books. I'm actually planning to reread them this fall and than watch the movies around Christmas cause that is a must for me to enjoy the holidays
In your ACOTAR reading vlog you said that you were kinda scared of reading POPPY WAR. I read it (I’m 14) and for me i it wasn’t that bad. The first book did have graphic scenes but I read it without imagining all of it in my head, so it was totally fine. The second book has less graphic. I don’t know about the third one though. Haven’t read it yet
Hi, definitely recommend you finishing the Harry Potter series. They are so well written, and the stories are just so fascinating, and it just really pulls you in! I’m not really want to read fantasy, but they are still my all-time favorite bucks!
