Dear Emma, for a while now I have been wanting to recommend you a book that is quite special to me. I only hope that if you end up reading it, you find as much comfort in it as I did. The English translation version of the book is called "The Gray House" and it is written by Mariam Petrosyan - an Armenian author. Have a beautiful day :)

I have just started this and have been laughing so hard that I am literally doubled over with tears! I have never read anything so funny! Thanks to you, Caroline and Katie from Books and Things for really introducing and encouraging me to read Dickens! I am so thankful that you have opened that doorway for me. I don't think I would have even thought about reading Dickens if it wouldn't have been for you ladies and your enthusiasm. Hopefully you will reach all those people that don't even know they are missing out. Sadly these days, many people do not even read.

I've tried to read Dickens in English. I read/ listen books in English all the time. But when comes to classics I just miss a lot. 😔. Sooo... spanish translation is the only way. Luckily we have really good translations. I'm trying to get my hands in every book by Dickens since I' ve read Great Expectations thanks to you and the debate is also pushing me!!! Team Dickens here (just in case it wasn't clear enough).😂 Hugs from Argentina 🤗🇦🇷

I loved The Pickwick Papers, it had been years since I first read it and I got so much more out of it this time. I read it on Project Gutenberg and listened to an audiobook (at 2x speed) on Librivox at the same time, and wrote a short summary of each chapter in Notion afterwards, so it wasn’t a very leisurely read 😂 but hey, it was efficient. What struck me as similar between Pickwick and Childhood, Boyhood, Youth is that in both, a young author is experimenting with how to examine human nature and turn it into art; Dickens does it through watching the outside world and bringing his characters into contact with it as much as possible, whereas Tolstoy does it by turning inward and giving us the inner life of the protagonist with a degree of honesty that is breathtaking. So far, I’m still #teamboth. Surely there’s been a dissertation written at some point comparing the various ”sidekick Sams” in literature? Sam Weller may not be the first archetypal sidekick/double/foil, but he’s certainly one of the better known ones. Also, Snodgrass never writes a single poem; Winkle is totally inept at all the sports he undertakes; and while both Snodgrass and Winkle (as well as Sam) end up married, Tupman the romantic is still unattached at the end of the book. So much of the humor of the book is derived from the actions and fates of characters being in direct opposition to their stated goals.

If you have the opportunity, do read the compilation of Dickens' earlier works "Sketches By Boz". It's mostly an observation of English society during that time and more in tune to reality compared to the plot driven Pickwick. And reading Pickwick afterwards would be more rewarding.

"Pickwick" is smashing. Despite much that is dated, it's still hilarious and more than hilarious: it is utopian in the best, most believable sense. Mr. Pickwick is often clueless, but he is truly a good and agreat man. Mr. P was one of the models (along with Don Quixote) for Dostoyevsky's "The Idiot," Prince Myshkin.

I didn't manage to read the Pickwick papers - quarantine had most libraries shut but it sounds wonderful!!! some of those passages are too beautiful :,( will be seeing you lovely people at the war and peace live stream tho!!! Very very scared of this book. Every night I've lifted it up just to feel the mountain that is the book and I feel my heart crumble every time I almost drop it onto my face.

I really want to recommend a very underrated book called The Didakkoi. It's about a little half-Romani girl who is send to a normal school. She deals with loss of her grandmother, constant bullying and harrassment from her classmates and general depression and distrust of people. It's sad and heavy in a lot of areas but things do get better for her. I really like the Romani culture they described in it and also how Kizzy goes through so much mental trauma. It's an amazing read.

Loved your analysis! lol it sounds like we had opposite experiences of the book; it took me a long time to get through the first half, but once the episodes started to tie together more in the last third or so, where the only real plots were the debtors prison and Winkle and Arabella, I got really hooked and finished the book in just a few days. (I also really loved all the legal stuff haha, makes sense bc Bleak House is my favorite Dickens.) I ended up giving it 4 stars. Off to watch the live show!

‘The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon’ which is where ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ is from, sounds very similar to the way you describe the ‘Pickwick Papers’. It’s diverse in its substance, i.e. it has love stories, gothic stories, essays, folk tales, beautiful descriptions of nature, history, commentary on rural life, Christmas, old traditions, society (particular in America and England), and etc. if someone has enjoyed ‘The Pickwick Papers’, I believe they’ll certainly love ‘The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon’. I’m pretty sure Washington Irving was friends with Dickens at some point, and one influenced the other or vice versa, which I suppose would kind of explain the similarities. P.S My edition of the book is called ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Tales’!

Emma I hope you're giving Dickens a chance without your bias (having read more from Tolstoy). Based off of your review, you seemed to have liked Pickwick more than Childhood, Boyhood, Youth. There's no 4th wall breaking flaws in this first book as Tolstoy had and it's realistic like most said he couldn't be and that Tolstoy had over him.

Just a thought..I'm not an expert but doesn't the katharsis Aristotle talks about take place afterwards, not during the tragedy? It allows to get into the story properly and 'live it'. If it's all wrapped into humour throughout, do we really get engaged properly or are we distanced from the beginning and we just shrug it all off with laughter? Always enjoy your videos ❤️
