As someone who is writing a Christian book, this video was super helpful to ask myself those questions about my own writing!

I don’t read Christian living. I only have time to read scripture and commentary at this season of my life. Sounds like I’m not missing much.

You have to be very cautious at who you read. There are too many authors who don't actually write about Christianity. But your attitude sounds very limiting. You have missed some good material.

There are other Christian books out there that aren't the self-help variety that I don't think were mentioned. My favourites were "This Present Darkness" by Frank Peretti, a fictional story but highlights the spiritual realities that surround us without our knowledge. Also, back in the 80s - 90s, I really liked reading books on Bible prophecy, Grant Jeffery was a good author in that genre.

Thanks you so much for this faith! I’m still a teenager and I often look at “Christian” books and studies and really wonder if they’ve somehow missed Christ because it’s just so self-help centered. I often wonder if I’m the only one who has a problem with our shallow songs and books but your channel reminds me their are others looking for more.

Well, if you want something challenging. Stick to John Owen, John Bunyan, Jonathon Edwards, Thomas Brooks, Matthew Mead, Spurgeon... You're right; who wants to wade around in the shallows when you can jump in at the deep end in seeking Christ! God bless!

I completely agree with you. Because of the hype, I read Mothers and Daughters of the Bible and found it ridiculously mundane. I also read another book by Lysa Terkuest and was shocked at how little faith was in it vs. working thru her own issues. Seemed more like a therapy session. It's all watered down, feel good Christianity.
@aungele3

Lysa Terkeuest has very little discernment when it comes to Christian living. Most of her books are like a therapy session because it seems that’s where she gets most of her material for her books. Very little from the Word itself.

The book that blew my mind (it actually helped "renew my mind") in the last year was "Openness Unhindered" by Rosaria Butterfield. I found it contains solid critical thoughts that were cited (scholarly -- the author is one which helps). I agree with your thoughts on these books. I prefer books with more 'meat' in them else I'll spiritually 'starve'. I'm enjoying your channel :)

Ty for this video! Personally, I wouldn't have picked up these books. I'm extremely wary of Lysa and Shauna's beliefs as they are not rooted in Scripture. But your review was enjoyable to listen to and I'm so happy you encourage Christians to think critically about what they're consuming. Some things under the guise of "Christian" are just secular thinking in sheep's clothing. We don't need to be a part of the blind leading the blind when we have the light of God's Word to guide us.

I enjoyed your video quit a bit! I also struggle with Christian books bc they do have a shallowness to them. But these videos are also hard bc if I don’t agree with Calvinist view, or visa versa, a lot of time they turn into bashing. And while you brought up your theology outlook you don’t seem to have the typical “your are lesser” than attitude! I love that so much! When I begin looking for for book recommendations on RU-vid in this category I had no idea the rabbit hole that can consume people. This was refreshing and I look forward to checking out more of your videos!!

Oh my Faith, I am really enjoying following you. I’m quite a new follower. You are such a breath of fresh air :). I don’t want to put labels on denominations but it’s easier to for this context - I was saved in a very Pentecostal and charismatic church, left and then ended up in a Calvinist reformed church. I went from one extreme of Christianity to the other and I have had such a hard time trying to find a balance. Now I’m taking a step back and trying to figure out my faith and as a masters student, aspiring to study a pdh, I do like to read and study so I’m often reading or craving information from others. I feel like you are such a BALANCED inspiration for me. I love what you talk about. You share similar interest and concern. You are very polite and thoughtful of what you say, you are honest but not harsh. You set a great example to follow. I love what you said about boundaries with Lysa’s book!

Lysa’s book Good Boundaries and Goodbyes probably saved my life last year from a very abusive “Christian” husband. I liked your points about God and boundaries but I think overall she handled it really well in the book. God doesn’t want wives to be abused mercilessly by their husbands and keep forgiving, that’s a distortion of the message of the cross to give us freedom from sin and bondage. I pray this helps someone ❤

I read Breem's previous book, "Women of the Bible Speak," when it came out, and I enjoyed it. I felt like it brought some of the people in the Bible to life for me, and I found myself relating to them. Back then, I didn't own a commentary set of my own, and I still don't really care for footnoting my Bible notes with scholarly footnotes, so it doesn't bother me at all that she didn't footnote her cross-references. I mean, I've owned several bibles that cross-reference OT and NT verses, and I've always considered that common knowledge and public domain. She's well versed in the Bible and absolutely could have made that same realization herself without some man having written it before. So yeah, it's not a scholarly work, but she never claimed it is. It's a light read for women who, like me at the time, would like some Biblical Christian living application, not a dry commentary.

Okay, so after hearing your review of Faulkner's book, I kind of see the disconnect here. You looked up the four best-selling books in a category, but that doesn't tell much of the story of why the books are popular. Most books that I've ordered and read in the last year are written by people who maybe have a RU-vid channel or a blog. It just makes sense that a blogger isn't going to have the reach of someone who is literally on TV five days a week. Like, my FIL watches Faulkner's show every weekday. These books are also very often given as gifts. So, my husband knows that I like Faulkner and I enjoy books about Christian living, so he might buy it for me for Mother's Day because he noticed me looking at it while we were in line at Hobby Lobby or something. It's basically on the level of Chicken Soup for the Soul, and both of those FN books are easy to grab in line while buying journaling supplies and listening to instrumental praise. It says more about marketing than what people really want to read. I'm not saying I can think of a better way to judge what Christian women are reading, maybe looking at reviews on ChristianBook, or maybe sticking to the actual Bible Study category. I'd be interested to hear what you think about Mama Bear Apologetics.

I'm not a massive reader in the first place, I find it quite exhausting to have to read (even with reading inside my head). I even struggle to consistently read the Bible. I have my ups, where I'm reading a lot in one week. Then, other weeks I struggle to have that discipline 😭. I definitely am grateful that I can listen to the Bible on audio; it's a godsend. I love people reading things back to me, especially a mans voice, as it is a glimpse into feeling like if it was, Jesus, reading to me 🥰. I have always been cautious in what Christian literature I should read. But, this year I have wanted to buy four Christian books and a couple of non-Christian books. I want to be more intentional about reading.

That can be dangerous as a Christian and your principles are very well worth writing down whenever we open up one of these books. I have these books on my shelf, i.e. Christian living books, and I probably would take out of them a few points which, as you say, can be summarised in probably one page. Shannas book Cold tangerines was a fun summer read with short stories like literally wanted to pages per story, and that was interesting. But when I get theology from it? Doubt it! I’m with you. I wouldn’t throw away just the paper book covers but also what’s inside the book cover. All 4!

I love Christian Historical Fiction. And other genres. But I only read these when I go to bed. Bible study and Devotionals are in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon.

I think a lot of new age / new thought has sprinkled into the Christian Living genre.

I don’t know where you got that list, but I know better books came out in 2022 (although, I’m drawing a blank right now as to titles! 🤦🏼. Showing my age! ). But, I do appreciate your thoughts on these books because so many read these books because they are on the list and do not know how to discern what might be a bit from the truth.

I absolutely remove the paper cover! However, I can't dog ear the pages. I use sticky notes; it marks the page and gives me a place to write my thoughts about it.

I recommend the book Church of Cowards by Matt Walsh. You know it's not going to be a shallow read when the first chapter is titled Christians Not Worth Killing. I intend to reread this book every year.

Thank you for your reviews. I am a fan of Lois Tvernerg and believe her influence has allowed me to seek more of the same types of works. Psalms 42:1 It is as my eyes have finally opened and I can see and hear the word of G-d.

I am at the point where I’m thousands of dollars in on my library and I no longer consider buying books unless a trusted source recommends it. Christianity Today, bestseller lists, etc are definitely not sources I trust. Honestly, as an older, conservative, man I also don’t often watch content made by women but this is one of several videos you’ve made that I’ve watched and enjoyed.

🎉EXCELLENT video!! 🎉. Excellent principle and life take away---is what we are reading “Christian” Jesus/Gospel theology? or is it merely self help masquerading as Christian. They are capitalizing on labeling things as Christian. recently I’ve started limiting which publishers I purchase from -this helps weed out the ick.

I have and read I Haven't Learned That Yet - one of hte reviews made me look her up because they were critical of her father. I think the title did it for me LOL! I enjoyed reading it - but can't say I got anything out of it. Lysa's I haven't read - I've read several of hers and get caught up in them but they all seem the same - either apologizing for suspecting her husband of cheating, breaking up with him for cheating, God and counseling, then divorce finally. I just want to take my 56 year old jaded 'wisdom' and tell her to run for the hills!

I recently read Jinger Duggar Vuolo's book BEcoming Free Indeed- it wasn't what I expected - the pastor who writes it with her I could definitely tell when he was doing the speaking instead of her. but it was interesting - just not sure worth the price. I read it on kindle but was still a little pricey.

I don’t know if you listen to audiobooks, but you 1000% HAVE to listen to the audiobook version of “The Postmodern Pilgrim’s Progress” brought to you by the guys at Babylon Bee!!! You will so love it, and the audiobook version is absolutely stellar! 👍🏼⭐️🙌🏻❤️‍🔥

Thank you for reading them. Now I won't be tempted to do so. I'm just not into several branches of current Christian culture anyway. You didn't sound mean. You just said your true opinion in light of Scripture.

Here is a positive take to you "waste of time" comment: these books caused you to stretch and exercise your critical thinking, and understanding of Biblical truth. I sometimes listen to people that i know are ify just to see if anything has changed, to check my own understanding, and to see if i can argue the points made biblically. I dont think you wasted your time. You were able to practice discernment which just caused your faith roots to grow deeper and become more secure. Lisa Turkist (sorry for the botched spelling!) Is out of Elevation Church with Steven Furtick. So that should give you a better understanding of her background. I personally shy away from "popular" Christian reading because it tends to be too feel good. I like the more acedemic reads that make me chew on things for a while.
