As someone who was in an ab*sive relationship and made it out, I thought I recognized the signs, but I was so mad at myself reading It Ends With Us and realizing that up until THAT part, I had seen no red flags on Ryle until people pointed it out later in reviews, then after a reread, I saw all of it from the beginning and just felt dumb for not seeing it at first.

THANK YOU! I literally didn't like him from the get go. But I think what it is is that alot of girls are conditioned to side-eyed or brush off "minor" level of creepiness because in the media we're told to believe that behavior like that is normal because it's for the sake of love and the main character is handsome. Like it actually took me some time to realize how weird it was that Ryle got a portrait made of the picture he took of Lily only after meeting her once. We've been conditioned through many movies and media depictions that if a guy is handsome and has a tragic backstory then his actions can be excused because "he can change".
@aqsa629

ykw i like ryle, yeah HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE RAISED HIS HANDS ON LILY. nad nothing can be reasoned with that. but the thing is he was not all bad. he had some really good qualities. how supportive he was of lily from the very beginning. how he turned down his promotion and didn't move out of boston. how he never wanted to be in a relationship, never wanted to get married. he did that all bcz he fell in love. meanwhile lily still loved atlas. lily was never 100% in with ryle. he had the magnet the books and she even kept the number than lied. just think about it.

They probably do this on purpose. The way it was marketed and the way the book starts, it feels like they want you to fall into the trap that this is just another romance book at first so the message of the book is more impactful at the end. Not saying I agree with that choice
@lauravsthepage
@lauravsthepage 2 года назад
Colleen Hoover writes a lot about abuse, trauma, and mental health. I find there is often triggering subject matter in her stories. If you are someone who has triggers you should avoid, there are websites that you can search that will list them all for each book. It Ends With Us is listed as having scenes of graphic domestic violence on the sites I am looking at. I think assuming romance books will be just sweet and happy is ignorant of the vastness of the genre. Just because something is listed as a Romance doesn't mean that it wont deal with intense subject matter.

YES but also I felt like "People We Meet on Vacation" makes more sense when you've read Poppy's monologue in the last few pages. (SPOILERS) Because I understood it like she explains that she always wanted to travel to meet people that would accept her as who she is and she searched for that adrenaline rush and the intrigue, but in the end she notices she doesn't need to find new people on vacation for that anymore because Alex gives her all of that. So Alex IS the people on vacation she searched for. And I think that makes the title actually genius.

I really, really loved The Anthropocene Reviewed. I'm not a booktuber but if I were one, it would be my top recommendation too. Like, maybe I'm biased, but I LOVE John Green's writing. Like, not a fan of the plot of his books but HIS WRITING. I really think that his writing is really, really overlooked just because his books are extremely famous, especially in pop culture. And The Anthropocene Reviewed is the best way to get a gist of his writing. His eloquent thoughts, and his skill to communicate those thoughts in the most profound way is just a joy to witness. Even if someone doesn't want to read his works, they can head over to his YouYube channel Vlogbrothers. He talks about things in that same wonderfully profound way in his videos. I don’t think anyone realizes that It Ends With Us is a romanticized book about domestic violence. The intention of Colleen Hoover was to inform the readers about the gaslighting, emotional and physical abuse, etc., but *SPOILER* the ending was not it. The time Lily went to Atlas was not it. Lily, Atlas, and Ryle are all cringe-worthy. It was weird enough how the story only ever circled around Atlas and Ryle and their love for Lily, but the fact that the story ended with Ryle still being friends with Lily, and Atlas ending up together with Lily - what was that?? It gives the readers a a false sense of what really happens in domestic abuses. In real life, it’s not happy ending; you don’t end up with another man, yet again; and life is not perfect like that. The writing was good, I can say that, but the whole story and the whole plot was a red flag. When authors write stories about domestic violence, one can only hope that the victim don’t end up with a romantic relationship again - as if to say that you can only be saved/happy with a significant partner, and that you should be okay after experiencing that type of abuse because in the end, you’ll have a happy-ever-after. My two cents on it.
@disappearinghills
@disappearinghills 2 года назад
Yes, yes, yes! Completely and utterly agree with you. The book is a pure disservice to real victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault by reinforcing Ryle’s continued involvement with Lily and the baby. Ryle was a manipulative rapist, why give him a villain backstory WITH a redemption arch? The plot and details were honestly the laziest thing I’ve ever read, of course Ryle is a mega rich surgeon and Lily’s best friend also married to a multi-millionaire whom just happens to be Ryle’s sister. It’s so tone deaf to the real reality of women who go through rape and domestic abuse, and might have been written better as a horror. Honestly Ryle deserved so badly to go to jail and Lily should have cleaned him out for his money but instead he didn’t receive an OUNCE of punishment which was perhaps was the worst part of this badly written book. It literally gave the impression that if someone has a sob story they are simply allowed to walk away with no punishment, which completely justifies men being allowed to rape women and get away with it so long as their... remorseful?

I guess the author wrote about her own experience and what she witnessed between her parents as a kid. If you read her notes at the end she stated that the story was inspired by it. She mentioned her father wasn’t a bad person. He “just” messed it up with Colleen’s mother by being abusive. Then later her mother married an Atlas type. Her father was never abusive with his kids (Colleen and her sisters). I guess she wanted to point out that just because someone is abusive with their partner they can behave differently with their own kids. (Now that’s an other question what kind of example they show..?) Now I don’t know what statistics says and whether this is an exception or not. The book is very tunnel visioned. It’s a fact. I didn’t like it either. It just made me feel bad and I didn’t find it ok that Colleen didn’t mention anywhere that the book is about domestic abuse. There were a couple of things I liked about it but for me it’s a two star read
@emilybatty1752
@emilybatty1752 Год назад
I agree in a sense but I guess you could say that maybe atlas and even ryle were both (literary) devices to show the contrasts of an abusive relationship - she had only ever known abusive relationships eg her parents - and the relationship she really wanted and deserved. Perhaps atlas allowed her to see the wrongness of Ryle and that she didn’t deserve the abuse she got. So by going to him in the end, she’s accepting this truth, and the love she actually deserves. And I guess it is describes as a love triangle novel (I don’t agree but it’s still Hoover’s intention) so it makes sense for her to choose. I still would’ve liked if it was like Waitress though, her choosing herself and her baby, leaving her abusive partner and rejecting the married man she loved whilst still having an appreciation for how he allowed her to see she deserved more than her own husband.

Jesus Christ is Lord. I’m serious, the Bible is truth. If you genuinely open your heart to Jesus Christ and do the inner work and personal reading something amazing happens. The key is in forgiveness. Start with your parents. That’s an important key that shows a lot of faith and love to God. They’ve loved you. So it should be easiest. Genuinely mean forgiveness inside your heart. Afterwards, breaking down before Jesus Christ and asking for forgiveness for yourself takes on an entirely new form. To be forgiven we must forgive. Until you take the first step on faith God stays at arm’s length. Jesus Christ teaches that in Mathew. Please, just see what it’s all about for yourself by personally reading these three books of the Bible. Genesis, Mathew, and one you chose yourself. Please, see what I mean for yourself. Just be genuine. It’s not hard. Please

i do NOT think youtube can be trusted lol..... there's usually a lot of overhyping. But you're also bound to find some gems within all the hyped books. I'm super iffy on reading colleen hoover... Huh, your opinion on The Anthropocene Reviewed was interesting! I really loved it, but I think it's because I felt very seen in the voice of the author since he seems to overthink things a lot but also find meaning in small things by being curious about them, which is something I do as well. I didn't really notice the early pandemic-ness of it, even though I read it only six months ago. Maybe it ties back into the being philosophical about things? Anyway, I don't mean to imply that you didn't like it because I know you said it was pretty good but for me it was one of my favourite books that I read.
