this world has one of my favorite references in the entire game. The Poncho zombie is a direct reference to the ending of the Western movie "A Fistful of Dollars" in which the main character uses the exact same strategy as the Poncho zombie uses in game to win the final duel of the movie.
Ever since NMT, I’ve always felt cactus would be far more at home in the WW. It’s not only thematically fitting but her mechanics almost seem designed for this world. Her piercing and spike weed duck work really well against chickens, as well as acting as a way to damage prospectors and an emergency piano killer. But it’s dps isn’t high enough to effectively deal with bulls or gargs. I honestly can’t believe there isn’t a mod that puts a cactus in the Wild West.
0:25 since Egypt is already in disrepair, and the mummies are already dead and zombified, perhaps there has been a massive length of time between the fall of Egypt and the arrival of the explorer, it's just that it's hard to notice given the fact that they are all zombies!
penny says in the beginning of the world you are 4000 years in the past. plus jurassic marsh indicates there were human zombies living with the dinosaurs (edit: i say this to contradict the argument of zombified mummies, since the game just throws zombies in whatever time period it wants). its just an inapropriate zombie.
Always head cannoned this, even though it says ancient it could be referring to ancient as of the period you arrive. The original lawn for AE was also an excavation site, which explorer is probably a remnant from. You could probably throw lost city zombies into AE to sell the illusion of it being a dig site where the mummies have come to life, or even bring explorer into LC too, since the time periods would relatively line up.
Something to mind about Chicken Wranglers (or more specifically the chickens themselves) is that lobbed plants will try to aim at where the chicken is going to be when the shot lands. Due to this shots can sometimes miss either because the chickens die before they get to their presumed destination or they get blocked by something. Also, if you freeze Piano Zombies and Chicken Wranglers (either with butter, Iceberg Lettuce or some other stopping method that EA has shoved in the game somewhere) it'll prevent their abilities from going off, so you could technically kill Chicken Wranglers before they can even release their horde. (Though considering you have like a hundred ways of dealing with the onslaught, it's probably easier to just deal with it.)
I realize the chicken wrangler bit was a joke, but it made me realize that it might be a Zelda reference? In Zelda, if you attack one chicken, a swarm of them will appear and attack you. As someone who has only played vanilla (and hated it) and Reflourished (and mostly loved it), wild west has felt very meh. I loved it's concepts but not it's levels, but this video is getting me excited to check out other mods to see how they make use of the mechanics like minecarts.
"Not O.K Corral" levels in mods are some of the best designed levels in the game, but I feel like we can all agree that Wild West Day 35 (Vanilla) is easily the worst designed level in the franchise. No freaking contest.
It got fixed later on I think but the final NOC level in vanilla used to have an AWFUL feature where you had a random chance of getting Coconut Cannon as the last plant, and if you didn't the level was almost impossible to win
I really just like the feeling of how “wild” the Wild West really feels, with a bunch of ways for zombies to either rush your defenses, switch lanes, or come at you from the back rows. All worlds follow their theme decently well, but it’s not often I feel like the feelings of what the world is like is implemented well into the world. Wild West especially gets the feeling of a wild, unpredictable, cowboy era perfectly, something which falls a little flat down the line in later worlds. Great video, as per usual, unsubbing and resubbing again ❤
Wild West may have good zombies and good(ish) plants, but my favourite thing about it is definitely Not OK Corral, the best minigame in PvZ2 and of all the games in my opinion. The level ideas that can be had from it are amazing and it’s really fun to play. Best of all, it even works really well with the world gimmick, minecarts. What’s not to love?
Akshually, the Torch Zombie being in Ancient Egypt is CLEARLY a foreshadowing to Modern Day having zombies from other times in the present! I remember hating Wild West back when I was beating PvZ 2, and I'm still a bit iffy with it. I get the idea of changing the gameplay, and I can see why it can be fun, but I hated this when I was basically new to the game (I played PvZ as a kid before, but I basically never remembered any of it). When Frostbite Caves wasn't a thing, you have so little counter to Prospector Zombie and my braincells and time were used more than what I wanted. Lightning Reed is the best thing to ever come out in this world. The absolute goat
What if the ancient Egypt in game is actually set at the time when archaeology of egypt started to trend around the late 1800s. It would explain the torch zombies who are uncovering tombs and it would also explain why the area is a bit ruiny, like the cracked open area behind the lawnmowers Ancient Egypt lasted over 3,000 years so there would still be mummies and sarcophagi in both an actual ancient Egyptian period and a late 1800s period so that part works both ways Or maybe archaeologists from the late 1800s were time travelled to actual ancient Egypt and just kinda carried on dusting
Lightning Reed is basically a beginner trap. Once you get into the harder worlds, the plant gets very weak compared to other stuff. I personally found Laser Bean stronger albeit you unlock that later. Once you get into JM and beyond, the plants there are quite busted for the most part.
@@cosmicsquid1285 the early Egyptian archeologist Khaemweset was literally the son of Pharaoh Ramesses II. He was an Ancient Egyptian who studied Ancient(er) Egypt. The pyramid of Djoser, which he restored, was about 1400 years old. Having people exploring Ancient Egyptian ruins in Ancient Egypt is absolutely realistic.
What I really liked about WW is the second Zomboss battle (Extra levels): You don't get any plant to damage the zombot, you only have spikeweed, electric currant, wall-nut and hypno shroom. The only way to kill the zombot is to hypnotise the zombies (You can transform them into gargantuars as this battle has a lot of plant food), while using minecarts to your advantage. The late game is especially hard, because chickens start to appear in bunches, but it's an interesting WW level overall
Damn you like it that's a hot take if I've ever seen one literally everyone hates it and for good reason it's one of the shittiest designed levels I've ever seen in any pvz game
@@danielfazylov6960 At least it's not boring nor spammed. Some old premium plant levels are spammed over and over, like the one featuring only snow peas and spikerocks. Though I would admit that this Zomboss battle should feature only plant food-boosted plants, or no chicken wrangler zombies.
@@juliennouvot7342the worst piece of shit lvl bc phase 3 is the worst shit imaginable and the stupid shit where zomboee HAS to go to the middle to die, for me he will not go even when a garg was attacking him in top row and I used my power tap and did no damage, then he rams my defense which killed a chicken wrangler and guess what NO ELECTRIC CURRENTS WHO DONT EVEN KILL THEM SOMETIMES WND NO SPIKEWEEDS SUCH AMAZING LVL DESIGN
I've always been a big fan of Wild West, a top 3 world for me. Great design, great theme, great music, diverse range of zombies and the world gimmick is cool. The unlocked plants are also pretty good, one of them not so much but even he shines in this world, and the level design is good for the most part, besides the Don't Lose More Than X Plants objective of course
I can see why you'd think chicken wrangler and jester are similar, but imo they're quite the opposite. when you see a chicken in the zombie line up you go: which plants do I pick to counter this? when you see a jester you go: which plants do I NOT pick to not BE countered? jester limits your strategies, while chicken just adds another layer to them, as you now have to worry about fitting aoe in your strat, if it didn't already have aoe, and managing it to take out the chickens. you can still use single target plants, walls that don't kill chickens, slow attackers and anything else wrangler counters, because as long as you bring something to deal with him, you'll be fine. inversely, bringing a projectile shooting plant against a jester, even if you already have a counter, is putting you at an inherent disadvantage, because as long as you have one plant that jester can counter, you have one more thing to worry about that destroy your defense.
Thanks for uploading every weeks, high quality, well edited vids, does make everyone have a good day. Btw nice video context right after just finishing wild west on a mod
In the first version of PvZ2, Poncho Zombies were more interesting, as you could use a coconut cannon to instantly kill them if their poncho was still attached to them regardless of if they had a grate or not. This simple difference gave coconut cannon more utility in Wild West and made the Poncho Zombies a more distinct threat! My theory as to why this was removed was because it was so obscure because it wasn't actively communicated to the player, so it felt more like a hidden exploit.
Now that I see it, I agree. Chicken wrangler having way more chickens than it looks like he has is horrible, truly immersion breaking. And I thought I could trust the game where plants fight zombies across different time periods to pull off realism. Smh my head Popcap, how could you
"Why is an explorer in the same time period as the egyptians whose ruins they explore" I mean, they are all dead, the egyptian zombies could totally still be around by the time explorers start showing up, although I guess that makes the world name a little iffy
I love how you added a music list in the description. It’s always frustrating when you hear a nice track and can’t find a music list. Your videos are in general always so polished and well structured. Definitely my favourite PvZ content creator on RU-vid. ❤
As someone who's pretty bad at the game, I like Wild West Using the minecarts well is challenging, at least for me And I did feel like Garlic and Starfruit would thematically fit better than something like Lightning Reed, But the zombies were quite fun, except for when the chicken wrangler got into an awkward spot again.
The society in ancient Egypt actually lasted so long that they had their own archeologists studying the pyramids before we did. The explorer is totally reasonable
5:10 Mostly unrelated to the commentary, but I remember when I played Altverz WWX-I, I got stuck there for soooo long for some reason, but the game does literally tell you that you might need future plants for some of the Extra levels, so I went into Far Future, got some plants there, went back, and beat it. Then I got to WWX-II and it was a conveyor level with a plant limit with lots of piano zombies that gives you plants that are almost exclusively only good in bulk, and I tried on and off to beat it, and I’m pretty sure it took me until I got through I think like half of Lost City to beat it. Mind you, this is with me playing the side content as well.
I used to live in the"Wild West" but it's not really "wild" over there. It's basically just a normal place but with less grass, more sand, and way, way, hotter.
You know I can agree with this philosophy because of the design of wild West yes I used to play this game but the fact that they kinda nailed the wild west right then... Btw my favorite day in wild west is day 8 I think they did that day well made unlike Big wave beach day 16 or even modern day 16 dear god what were they thinking I even had so many resets because my tablet couldn't handle the game and just crashes
Currently the split pea is really handy on dealing with pink zombies and then the roller skate zombie after they blast through your plant defense on rainbow mode. Also the electric plant is excellent when you’re trying to arm multiple lanes in a horde.
Wild west really doesn't have anything I dont like about it, its plants and zombies are all fun to use and face respectively, none of them are an octo zombie or a ra zombie, they all matter and have unique uses. And the gimmick is quite interesting, it can be annoying if you don't use it but it is quite fun to make use of when you base a strategy around it. I dont mind the challenge of the objectives, either since the world as a default is not that hard they aren't as big of a deal as bwb 28
I played PVZ2 when it first came out, just a casual player. But after going through the levels and unlocking Wild West and it was instantaneously my favorite when it was still the last level back then. Everything from the mechanics to the plants(Lightning Reed my beloved) and especially the music still stuck in my head long after I left PVZ2 when seed packets were introduced. I just love it in general and the level that comes to mind when hearing PVZ2 for me.
I always loved that poncho could keep a player panicking even if they didn’t have the armor underneath, and mixed with the mine cart gimmick could distract more paranoid ones while ones that DO have the armor get into your main defenses
14:47 you can stall hoards this way by swiping it very fast because of the stepping movement system on pvz2. you start the eating animation but once the plant in the minecart moves it stops and restarts the walk cycle so your just stopp the walk cycle before it walks lol.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the poncho zombie was inspired by Back to the Future III, in which Marty McFly uses a metal object to protect himself from a bullet
Seeing the old map was so weird, i thought i was crazy with how the map changed. Or how cabbage was a tutorial plant. Not seeing it after 10 years feels nice, its the exact way I thought it was.
Actually, ancient Egypt has existed for so long, it actually had its own explorers and archaeologists who explored their OWN ancient ruins! Its crazy just how long ancient Egypt has really existed.
I really hate it because my lawn has to be symmetrical. It’s like an art form for me! This is so important to me, I will make my lines weaker to keep it aesthetically pleasing
Great video! However, I'll voice my opposing opinion on lighting reed lightning reed can fire between 3 different lanes, and indirectly also the 2 lanes beside those. this, combined with the low sun cost, allows you to potentially create an armada of intense damage across all lanes. I suspect the reason you don't find it to be as good is because your strategy involves a lot of sun production, which the lightning reed barely makes use of. Additionally, you place the sun producers ahead of the damage dealing plants. This works great for your strategy of 1-2 lanes of high value plants whilst you reinforce it with tons of sun producers. Thanks for reading my comment, and I hope you have some sort of response, though I'm not gonna make expectations.
Minecarts is a amazing function in the game. Like building a Rollercoaster with only dirt blocks you got because you don't wanna use any wood. Using the minecart to check out your world while you see yo- shit, wrong game.
As someone who has owned chickens, and plan to own them again once I can figure out how to revive my dog so that they don't get killed again by raccoons, I find this perfectly reasonable, he carries two chickens, but when you kill him the chickens eat him and reproduce at rapid rates creating a swarm, this is how chickens work, when protected by a sufficient guard, in this case the other zombies, and given food aplenty, in other words the body of their previous owner, they will fill the container they're in with their children. This is why there are two chickens, one is male, and the other is female. So logically, everything shown in game is perfectly logical and reasonable.
inconsistencies with the times zombies come from could be explained that those zombies are actually ones Zomboss brought with him, then dressed up to “fit the theme”
huuuuh i know thou aint reading this but i really watch your content a lot and i was thinking if you pirated a version with all plants or bought them, asking because i always wanted to play with those
