It’s literally one of the best PSP games. It’s full of references and comedy. It’s fun and not supposed to be taken seriously. It’s Daxter. It’s unfortunate you didn’t have fun.
@@RETRObutionofficial I find that the game is still fun, but it does feel strange going back to is since I realized that I didn't remember much of it. I was like "there was a construction site?" "Why don't I remember having to save the eco plants like in Jak 1?" Idk, it's interesting on how little I remember it.
The problem with the Spyro comparison is that collectables are option in Daxter as are most platformers. Daxter is also easily one of the best platformers on the PSP.
I thought exactly the same thing about this game: it isn't bad (just correct with 5,75/10) but it is very overrated: I even saw some players putting this game higher than Jak & Daxter X and even Jak & Daxter 1 (which is pleasant for me but not that much: 6,5/10).
One of the side characters in this game, Taryn, (the lady with the blue hair and red top) reminds me a LOT of the PS2 exclusive 3D platformer/fighter Kya: Dark Lineage. Love that game. Was a solid one. Surprisingly in-depth combat system for a game of its type too. Various combos like leg sweeps, low-hitting double kicks, a leg sweep - uppercut - straight ahead kick, different grabs depending on where you stand in relation to your enemy, jumping on an enemy's shoulders, groin kicks, sidesteps, a strange counter/shield that makes an enemy that hits it move in slow-motion for about three seconds... Quite a lot of variety in its platforming too. Freefalling, board sliding, wind gliding, animal riding, and very light puzzles and stealth. Stuff could flow into one another quite smoothly. Still had jank and doesn't live up to its potential for an interesting story as well as it could have, hence why i'm trying to spread word of Kya: Dark Lineage where I can.
amazing video as always, man! enjoyed the story time on this one :P I remember the reviews for this game were really good back in the day; but it doesnt mean it can stand the test of time
Thanks Cristiano :) I was a stupid kid back when the PSP came out so I probably didn't realise reviews were a thing. It meant I ended up with some absolute shitters like Crazy Frog Racing on the PS2 😅
I really enjoyed this game I played it for the furst time this year and all I played and beat it on my Vita Aye it wasn't the best but well worth a play if you enjoy the Jak and Daxter games
@RETRObutionofficial I wasn't trying to imply that your opinion was invalid Sorry if it came off that way I also Prefer the earlier Jak games I'm kinda torn if I like the direction they went with Jak 2 and 3 As a kid I didn't question it I thought it was awesome but going back as a teenager replaying the first just felt really good But I'm happy with you not thinking this is a great game It isn't it's mid And sometimes mid is just okay 👍
Oh no don't worry I didn't take anything negative from the comment. I just think Jak 1 is one of the best 3D platformers ever made and I wish we could've got a direct sequel to it rather than the kinda GTA ish style game of the later Jaka
@RETRObutionofficial I agree I do like Km Jak 2 and 3 and when I was younger I didn't think much about it but going back on the PS3 and the Vita I lamented the games we lost
Great video, loved the story, australian millennial here, never got a special religious wad of cash but my normally fairly strict parents told Santa to put jak 2 renegade in my stocking when I was 10 and I suspect it may have aged as daxter has for you, have had two tries at replaying (vita and retroid pocket 4 pro). Good stuff, keep it up, you've gained a subscriber 👍
My Psp battery exploded a few years ago, this is the first I've heard of that being a common issue. Just went to dust it off and play some Dissidia and found the battery casing popping off and opened it up to see not a pretty sight. Was stored in a cool, dark place for years so no idea how it happened but now I've got some closure I guess Mine also had a problem since day one where it would shut off at complete random. Not go into rest mode, just complete shut down. Sometimes it would go days without it happening, other times I'd get 5 minutes before it happened. Cost me a superboss win in Crisis Core twice. Just another thing to add to the list for anyone considering hunting one down these days
Battery replacements on systems that are as old as the PSP should be the first thing you do when playing again or buying one pre owned. With all old systems it’s also advised to have them serviced. First thing I done when I bought a preowned PS3 a while back. Massively extends the life of your device.
I respectfully disagree with your take. The combat wasn’t super in depth, but I enjoyed using the bug spray to stun enemies and the flame thrower too. I thought it was very fun during the platforming sections too. As far as PSP spin offs go, to me this one was best. I just really enjoyed the “vibe” of this game too. It really felt like a cozy Jak game. My mind is also blown that all these classic games are now available on modern hardware. Again, I respect your perspective.

It plays exactly the same. Source: I own a CFW Vita and actually tried the game recently. The Vita doesn't upscale or improve the framerate of PSP games, it just runs them like normal.
The story of staying up super late is so relatable 😂 I vaguely remember finally getting my PSP around 2005, it was a Friday I'm pretty sure (probably my Birthday, it's fallen on a Friday many times) I got my OG PSP "Value Pack" (the one which came with the Console and a Memory Card, Soft Slip/Case, Strap etc.) and EB Games gave an option of 2 out of like 6 games, I grabbed Daxter, which is why I bought the system (plus it's PlayStation 😅) and Ridge Racer cause nothing else appealed to me (may have also been the only other game still worth a decent amount in terms of individual price or something) I remember just playing Daxter non stop in my bed, then switching over to Ridge Racer and feeling really tired before I looked at the clock on the table and it was 1am or something (I was in 5th grade then, so whatever age that is... 10 or something?) which was stupidly late for me 😂
I spent a lot of nights up waaaaay too late playing games hoping my parents wouldn't hear me. And I remember launch lineups all too well, I got the 3DS on launch and the pickings were slim, you usually end up picking up some terrible game just because its something to play on the new console lol
I never had a PSP growing up but my friend did and this was his only game for awhile. When I was like 9 dude, it was incredible. Been thinking of fixing some of the pile of PSPs I have to give it a shot, but if I can just play it on PS5 then why bother?
I was pleasantly surprised , I honestly liked it better than sly 1 , it has some really fun platforming , nothing special but I got the platinum trophy in a day
You aren't the only one: for me, this game is just correct and I prefer more The lost frontier (even if this game is objectively worse). I would give to Daxter PSP a 5,75/10, not a bad game but not at all an excellent game as some many people try to make believe because of their nostalgia.
@@RETRObutionofficial the game felt like they got the interns to copy and paste the old / unused assets and cutscenes form jak and daxter and called it a day.
@@RETRObutionofficial Going forward I think I should have just watched and skimmed a video on youtube or just watched the cutscenes and skip to game 2 which is I less remember or 3 which I havent played and more so wanted too
