I REGRET making this app (AVOID this app development pitfall)

Today I share a valuable lesson in app development using SwiftUI and AI. In this video I take you through my 24-hour journey of creating what I thought was the most technically advanced app of my career... only to realize it was a mistake.
Here's what happened:
- I built an AR app that lets you draw on any surface in the real world, similar to Vision Pro demos.
- The app uses advanced AR technology, allowing for real-time surface detection and object occlusion.
- I got carried away with the cool factor, continuously enhancing the app with features like image importing and placement in AR.
The catch? This cutting-edge AR functionality only works on the iPhone 15's new A17 Bionic chip, severely limiting its potential user base.
Key lessons for app developers:
- Don't get blinded by cool technology - always consider your target market
- Research device compatibility and market share before diving into development
- Use keyword research tools (like Astro by Mateo) to assess market demand
- Be cautious when targeting niche hardware features
- Stay focused on your main goals as an indie developer and solopreneur
I also discuss the challenges of maintaining discipline in content creation and app development, even when facing setbacks like illness. This video is a reminder that just because we can build something doesn't mean we should.
As app developers and solopreneurs we need to balance our curiosity and innovation with practical market considerations. Learn from my mistake and avoid wasting time on projects without a viable market.. (no matter how exciting the technology might be)
Apps by Adam Lyttle is the personal journey of an indie app developer, sharing valuable lessons and experiences to help fellow developers succeed in the competitive app market. My channel is based on one simple premise: "A rising tide lifts all boats" - I share my experience, teach what I've learned and highlight the mistakes I've made along the way.
If you're an aspiring app developer, established solopreneur, or anyone interested in the world of app creation, this video offers invaluable insights into the pitfalls to avoid and the importance of market research in your development process.

I don't think it's a pitfall.. The best times I've had in my 15 years of software development were when I randomly thought of something and got it working in half a day them promptly abandoned it. Tech demos are the best part of product development.

The app will need some time to develop, by the time you have something polished, adoption to iPhone 15 will have increased and a new apple vision pro will be released. 7-10 % i think is a lot actually. Make min version iOS 15. They are the early adopter you want to target. Maybe you could develop an AR SDK, I could use that for science applications. P.s. was too early to comment in the video, you are now discussing this

This is awesome, thanks for the video! There's def an audience for it. Forget playful drawing, and think of an engineer walking around machinery marking repairs up. Or a builder inspecting a house. I'd get cracking with it!

Conversely, this could be a Pro app because only early adopters have a powerful enough device. From October 2024, there will be new devices which could take market share to 20%. But really interesting to see you thought process with Astro. Hope you get better soon!

Hi Adam. Sorry for my broken English. For some reason I came across your video. And when I saw the dilemma you are in about what the use of your app could be, my mind went straight here. ru-vid.comPly9JuKwyB8 I will explain the point. - If it is possible to save the state of the drawings in the space where they were painted, it is not only applicable to inspection work so that another inspector can see where exactly the errors are, but also once the change is made you know where you left the marks. - This can also work as guides for places or for people with visual disabilities by being able to map their house + with offline visual recognition the app can help them navigate in their house or new spaces. - Custom AR Suits??? May Be??? But as you mentioned, this is only possible when the majority has access to this technology in a common way. Great Video by the way!

I would think Apple would provide such features as standard just to get people familiar with AR

You might have a point because it worked. It’s a feature looking for a usecase it seems

It's the companion feature to the Vision Pro - somehow people need to cheaply create that spatial data for the VR headset. Might be removed in later iPhone versions, we'll see.
