Another problem with rental companies using mileage stoppers is when people are too scared to report them... Rob...

Protecting them is enabling them. Next time, post the Vin so the future buyer doesn't get scammed.

These mileage stoppers are becoming more of an issue across the board as vehicle prices rise. Can't tell you how many dealerships I've gone to are using them on their lots flat out and somehow not getting caught. Heck the worst example I've seen is a 03 Mustang cobra with 4782 miles on the clock. Got ahold of the service history and come to find out the real mileage is 327,193. Would have been a great car to buy because it was very well maintained but the rollback made it worthless.

The millage stoppers Only block the cluster. Vcds or any other good diag tool can read the millage from the TCU (gearbox) not perfect but helps expose a car you might be buying

I live in Quebec and at least locally I can assure you most leases and purchases made on a credit bubble are rollbacks, it's a common theme and people assume everyone does it. My 05 LC has past 300k 10' Avalon has over 400k and my wife's 18' 3 series has 150k. That's kinda low mileage but yeah not considering the overall theme. 😂

they have been doing shit like this for 20 years+ on super high end exotics. 90% of all higher mileage like 5000km + F40s are rolled back. These cars were driven so much and so many are low miles now it's laughable.

Seeing as that was an exocic car, would it be a good idea to contact the manufacturer and see if they can prevent the owner from getting allocations/dealer support any more? Technically you wouldn't be reporting to the authorities, but can still essentially get him out of at least the higher dollar exotic rentals.

Imagine if you install that, rent it out, it crashes and insurance finds the device….

Rob, pull the gauge cluster fuse and take it for a spin around the block. I’m curious if this trick works on exotics also. I use to make a replacement fuse with a switch running to it to turn the cluster on and off, so you can still check speed and vitals on long drives.

OK lets clear up a few things 1. this is after market mod made by superkilometerfilter not an OEM hidden feature 2. its piggyback system which sits between the harness and ecu 3. lambos store the milage in 3 different spots, OBD port can get ACTUAL mileage but they sell a "filter" for that as well 4. screw these scumbags and report them!

The power move here is to turn off the blocker and drive it non stop for the rental period and take it back with 5000 extra miles on the clock. "Oh, you said unlimited miles!"

I love this kind of information Rob. You can roll back miles, but you can't roll back wear and tear. The key is looking for excessive wear or poor drivability when in the market for exotics especially.

great point, not only is the mileage higher, but it hasn't been properly maintained during those miles. you pay for a car with 2k miles, it actually has 20k miles and it runs like it has 40k miles

Isn’t that dangerous as hell too? Let’s say I rented that car in that condition, and started laying into it to see what it could do, and as a novice driver such as myself, if something were to fail and it caused a wreck. I hope you reported them.

Checked out that website and they service cars from simple commuter cars to delivery vehicles all the way to supercars. And unfortunately the only person who is going to end up paying for that fraud is the second owner. And that thing is easily removed so there is no visible evidence other than the issues the car has which if minor could be easily missed or explained away.

I just went to the device manufacture RU-vid channel SKF Speed. I can’t believe they just sell it on plain sight. And many people comments the video, so I assume a lot of people buy these. I just can’t imagine how popular these are in east Europe being the manufacture from Hungary

Hi Rob, very interesting, a couple of things. The first is going to be a surprise. Your comment regarding getting the rental comped by doing what you suggest is actually criminal in New Zealand and I am pretty sure it will be the same in the US and most other legal systems. Why? It actually meets all the tests for the offense of blackmail. You cannot say give me that other wise I will go to the cops. a slightly different example if you know somebody stole something from you and you say give me it back or I will go to the cops - same deal, go straight to jail. Maybe I did something similar many years ago and talking to some f(law) friends over a beer I realised why I got a 50% pass for Crimes paper at my law school. Yikes!! Please nobody should ever do this unless you want to share a cell with Bubba. Second thing, the window partially closing .... a S500 I had did similar things on the windows, sun roof etc. In my case you did a relearn process like push this button for 3.75 seconds(or something) then this one etc. It resets the sensors and electronics. Fixed it everytime. No need for a dealer. Used to take me 2-3 minutes not half hour or hour for the dealer's bill. It is very simple in my case. If you ask around someone might tell you what the sequence is. Same to reset aircon etc. Cheers John

True Milage is recorded in several other ways including the TCU, someone buying such an expensive vehicle should know to do the correct checks
