In October 2021, after the loss of my German Shepherd Hans, I rescued a Belgian Malinois puppy from the Orange County animal shelter. The crazy Malinois puppy, then seven months old, was rescue-only due to her behavior. She was just too wild and out of control to even be introduced to prospective adoptors. I had to go through a Malinois rescue to be able to pull her from the shelter, about five days before she was scheduled to be put down.
We are now six months past her adoption and she is a wonderful, friendly, smart dog. She is great with both dogs and people just wants to play all the time. She knows her basic commands and we are working on more advanced obedience and training. The combination of puppy energy and Belgian Malinois energy can be overwhelming, but I love her and try to make her life wonderful.

Wow she is so beautiful and she knows her commands. Did you train her to do all that?

Thank you very much. She seems to have had some basic obedience training already and I have just been building on that.

Sorry about Hans, he was a real companion of yours. Glad Gretel is bringing you some new joy. Zelda looks like she can only take so much of Gretel's energy.

I was just telling that to Latrice! She comes over for a few days but that's enough for both of them as Gretel just can't relax she always has to be bothering / playing with her. Yes, very sad about Hans, he was only 8 and it all happened very suddenly. Just about killed me.

@@FreddySherman Know how you feel. Wife and I had a 16-year old German Shepherd that passed away years ago. Strangely that breed is so human in their mannerisms and intelligence.

@@loudmouthnewyorker2803 I agree. He was my first dog, I never had a dog as a kid, only cats. And they bond so much to you, he was truly a velcro dog. I cry every day. We called him Hansel, so she is Gretel and that way I think of him every time I say her name.

Dude stop saying a command so many times. "Gretel sit sit Gretel sit sit sit sit Gretel sit". you need to correct her if she doesn't do it the first time. you're teaching her that she has to hear "sit" multiple times to do that command. I hear you say "no" to correct her but the timing is off at times. You also don't have a clear release word for her. If you tell her sit or down, she has to stay in that position until you release her with word like "OK" or "Free" or "Break". Mals are great dogs and good for you for taking her in but you need to give corrections when they're due and maintain structure.

So how should I do that? How should I correct her to sit on the first command? Yes, she needs more training to hold the command, she knows release words but does not wait for them, unless I repeat stay, stay, stay. Thank you, I appreciate the guidance.

@@FreddySherman For example, when you're training Gretal w/ a leash or long line, and you say "sit" but she's still standing, that warrants a correction b/c she didn't do what you asked. You would take the leash to pop the collar (physical correction) and say "no" (verbal correction) then restart saying "sit" - one command only. She may need help and you can lure her in a sit position, then when the behavior is done (she's sitting) mark that behavior with "yes" (or your marker word) and give a treat (praise "good girl"). Dog needs to understand what they did wrong and what you want them to do. Balanced training includes rewards for doing the right thing and corrections for not complying. This will lead to good obedience and a strong bond. Be patient and be consistent. There's a dog trainer I highly respect and he also owns a Belgian Malinois. Check out Robert Cabral's RU-vid channel - there are so many tutorials and training lessons (including how to teach stay) that can help you out. Good luck

@@FreddySherman I know it’s been a few months and I’m wondering if anything has changed. But it’s definitely important to have them obey first time told. You give the command, pop the collar on a slip lead, physically push down her butt, then praise with a snack or their favorite reward. And then do it about 67,000 times and they will get it. But the Belgian malinois is considered the most intelligent dog breed in the world, even over boarder collies. I hope you get him in to some dog sport or have him do some kind of job because those dogs are athletic workaholics.

@@hermitwatcher8997 Improvement but I should be doing more daily training to help. She's almost two years old and does listen better. Energy level and drive are through the roof, it can be overwhelming. She is crazy friendly towards all people, most days we spend some time walking around downtown Palm Springs just meeting people.
