I was seriously considering getting an M1 mac mini but the 16GB version was too expensive when I factored in needing additional external storage. £200 for another 8GB RAM is excessive
Simon, it depends on your needs. 8GB of memory for most users is enough, now for somebody like myself that utilizes a lot of applications to create content I need that extra 8GB of memory. Don’t get me wrong, the Mac Mini with M1 is a powerful device but I don’t want to be closing some apps to be able to edit my content smoothly.
The M1 chip is well design to avoid page file usage unless is totally needed and will assign a section of the NVME that is not been use for that purpose. Now for my case and many other creator that will render some form of animations on the videos while editing on Final Cut Pro is excruciating to the NVME for all the read and write work that is performing when is caching files.
Every usage is different, Lightroom and Photoshop don’t use the same amount of memory as any other program that uses plugins for animations and have to render to see them on playback. I never said is bad is not just for me and my use that’s why I got the 16Gb version.
That's made for somebody that does need to work from it on daily. Is more like a supplement for people that want to have one sitting at their desk but they rather work out of their Ipad.
