Awesome 😊 I’ve been watching the show on Netflix recently so the timing of this video was perfect cuz there’s so much i don’t think I saw of this show because of my age at the time it was on air (I’m essentially catching up so to speak). I have a slight obsession with podcasts now too😂
The irony that Mojo is responsible for the girls creation both because of him trying to mess with time in a later episode, and in being such a bad lab assistant, he got the professor to break a thing of Chemical X. Now that's some good stuff there.
This video is fantastic and very well-done! I love hearing all the anecdotal stuff as well as some of the behind the scenes research into the episodes. And I especially loved hearing you praising the art and sound design for each episode! And my favorite episode of the season is Octi Evil (even though yeah that title is pretty lame) but I agree with your other choices like Boogie Frights, Ice Sore, and Uh Oh Dynamo.

This is true. Maybe Stuck Up, Up and Away was meant to be in the first season, but ended up as a holdover episode for whatever reason. It was the first episode of Season 2 and she was in two more episodes that season.
@maskofthedragon He's not the only one-time villain either. I know these were in the first season, but Mr Mime and the hypnotic cat are also there. I think Abracadaver or someone else from a one-time episode is there too. The Rowdyruff Boys are also visible, but they did get five episodes after all, and two were full-length, while they got their own ending in the fifth since the girls weren't in that episode at all.
Abracadaver and the Boogey Man (who I’m assuming is the one off you’re thinking of) weren’t added until the The Powerpuff Girls Rule! special. However, everyone else mentioned is in the intro from the beginning. This may be due to the practice of ordering one season and cutting it into two. I know that’s more recognized in today’s age, but I see no reason why this couldn’t be practiced back in the 90’s
@@crystallotus3422 I also think that it was the "unfinished" version of Princess now that I think about it. If you notice, in the intro she has white boots, but when she wears that outfit in her finalized design, the boots are black.

The Powerpuff Girls & Rowdyruff Boys were based on the nursery rhyme: girls are made of sugar, spice & everything nice whereas boys are made of snips, snails & puppy dog tails. The Powerpuff Girls intro showed the girls being created with sugar, spice & everything nice with the extra ingredient Chemical X. That intro foreshadowed that eventually in the future, there would be 3 superpowered boys created with snips, snails & puppy dog tails with Chemical X. The Rowdyruff Boys were BOUND to happen.
Although of course, the nursery rhyme actually says boys are made of "slugs and snails and puppy dog tails". But where's Mojo going to find slugs? It's amazing he even managed to get the tail off the Talking Dog.
I love that you brought up the Rowdyruff Boys' theme being an inverted version of the Girls', I always loved that detail and can't stand that RU-vid lacks any fan renditions of it.
I can definitely understand Bubbles being the favorite PPG amongst the general consensus. She does get some of the best character episodes and she is adorable. My personal favorite was always Blossom. She's a great character who is kind of underrated by how few character episodes she gets compared to her sisters.
@@gracekim25 Yeah, as an adult I love them all! Though my childhood favorite was Bubbles, I do still find her super cute but I've also gained an appreciation for Blossom.
I do remember accidentally thinking Buttercup was a boy😅 because green (I was a silly kid with that old mindset and somehow didn’t catch on she’s a girl😳 I do feel embarrassed for making such a mistake)
2:32:11 I think part of the reason why YuGiOh got censored that way was because 4kids operated on network channels like Fox, while Cartoon Network was a cable channel. Network channels had stricter rules for kids shows back then. This got to the point that Saturday morning cartoons on network channels were just preschool shows, Disney channel sitcoms and 4kids
Tbh, I didn’t even think of the Powerpuff girls that much aside from “oh, that shows pretty good.” But hearing you go so much into why you love this show so much is enrapturing - your presentation of your thoughts is amazing to watch. I’m glad you’re able to share why you love this series so much, and giving me a new appreciation for this show!
I really admire how in this show a lot of episodes start off from the villains perspective and the PPG are only seen when the villains start causing trouble. It helps makes the world feel so much bigger. It's quiet the challenge being able to keep an auidence entertained even when the protagonist(s) aren't around.
9:09 technically we DID get a view of a newscaster voiced by Tom Kenny emulating the narrator in Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends. In the season 4 premiere, Challenge of the Super Friends, it opens with said newscaster saying something along the lines of “The City…IS IN PERIL! And I’m Terrified!” It’s the closest I believe we’ve had to a physical representation of the narrator.
As someone who draws a Cartoon Network comic all the time but can't find the time to actually rewatch the old shows often, it's nice having videos like this to watch that reminds me of characters and moments I forgot about.
I really, really enjoyed this. I know how long you've been working to make a retrospective this big and excited to see where it goes. Be sure to pace yourself! You know we're all excited to hear your thoughts on every episode of the Powerpuff Girls and their lovely little city of Townsville. BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THAT!
One thing I also love about Him is that In Tough Love, its one of the few if not only time, the girls threatened to KILL their villain. Granted they said "Dont you ever do that again." "It will be your last!" I know it wasnt DIRECTLY sayign they would kill Him but it was more of a indirect way
I’m not against shipping either but I also remember The Rowdyruff Boys episode for having some of the best action in series and the boys pretty memorable characters regardless. Literally being evil gender bent versions of the girls helps.

CN did other bumpers in that style with other shows (I think they did one for tom & jerry and Dexter, if im not mistaken). I love how HIM’s first outing hinged on him not expecting Blossom and Buttercup to have basic decency and make up while his second hinged on the exact opposite.

This episode is so unfairly treated, cause many people simply don't realize, that as You pointed out: this is a comedy driven episode, which has a timeless message: What happens, if the power gets into the hands of the wrong person? And don't forget, that this episode(and the whole PPG) was made in a time when the world had sense of humour! Unlike today. What especially touched me, that You had really good points about the relationship between the Mayor and Ms. Bellum, citing, that He truly listens to Her. And, how I'm glad, that unlike many others, You discussed the Fuzzy and Ms. Bellum scene as well: Yes, Fuzzy is a VILLAIN and he doesn't treat Her with respect. So the the message of the series was not: "See, guys, this is how You have to treat an attractive Woman" NO! The whole thing is about Fuzzy's tyrannic, and selfish nature, which is revealed in this episode. But of course, with COMEDY. That's why it's good. How I wish, Your review to get many people to their senses.
I also see Buttercup's silence in Buttercrush as a way of conveying her unwillingness to express her emotions. Since she's the hardened tough girl, she probably doesn't want to admit to having feelings for someone else, and so she deals with it by keeping silent.
Tbh Bubblevicious was the reason why i fell in love with the show in the first place. I can remember being so dumb founded how i thought the show was to girly for my taste that when i saw that fight with bubbles was when i got interested in the show. Crazy how back than they could get away with something like that
I love the observations you've made about the sound design, because that really is a big part of what makes film, television, games, any media with an audio element, so enjoyable. The music, the sound effects, and even the actors' line delivery. Those are like the three pillars of sound design right there. Every part of the audio is distinct and memorable in its own way, just as much as the art direction and animation style. And I'd like to add that it makes sense they pay homage to Star Wars here and there, because those movies also have those three sound pillars. Epic score full of catchy melodies? Check. Hard-hitting sound effects that you instantly associate with the blasters and lightsabers? Check. Cheesy, but oh so quotable dialogue in just about every conversation? Super check.
Thank You for helping me appreciate the soundtrack, animation, background designs, use of color, and sound design of the Powerpuff Girls in ways I never did before Shadow.
"Boogie Frights" was the first episode of the Powerpuff Girls I was introduced to! Ironically I didn't watch it on TV but found it as a special feature on one of my cousins Scooby-Doo VHS tapes 😂
Scooby Doo's Greatest Mysteries. That was the one. I know because I also have that tape. Plus there were many other Scooby Doo VHS tapes that came with bonus cartoons like Dexter's Laboratory
As a fellow Pendulum fan, I feel like my PPG obsession definitely played into my interest in drum and bass and fast paced electronic music in general. The soundtrack is one of the most underrated aspects of this show just in general and I am glad other people appreciate it as well
That Fuzzy Lumpkins loop promo you described sounds like one of those ones Cartoon Network played during the Powerhouse Era where they would loop footage from either a show or a classic short, then have the logo popping up with the slogan underneath saying "Screwy, ain't it?" They seemed to do a lot of these.
5:03:56 I suppose but when they return in later seasons at least Boomer shines a lot in turns of personality in my opinion, he is mistreated and looked down on my his brother for being more innocent and I find myself liking him a lot in Bubble Boy I think it was called? As you can clearly see he wants to prove himself to his brother as he goes to steal some candy, but yeah I think their personalities are absent here though and I don't see many differences between Butch and Brick besides Brick being the leader

In other words, while they can be lethal/dangerous, their goal is quite innocent, destroying the city is just the natural need for them tl get the girls' attention.

A five hour breakdown of the first season of PPG is fucking insane dude. I'll def get back to this once I finish my rewatch. I think I'm around the same age as you, your story about getting into the Powerpuff Girls resonates with me as I became a fan around the same time (although my memories of when I first watched the show exactly don't exist sadly). PPG is such an important piece of media to me, one of the first (besides Mario) that really got me interest in being creative and I can credit it to probably being the main reason I got into character design. I'm always glad to see others so passionate about PPG and you're definitely one of the most passionate and through people out there.
Great video man, and nice new avatar! Here's my favorite episodes this season: Boogie Frights: I loved the disco vibe of the Boogie Man and his crew, the Professor displaying his fatherly advice to the girls and Bubbles overcoming her fears. Also this was the first episode I saw, since I used to watch it often on a "Scooby-Doo" VHS tape. Abracadaver: Just the idea of a zombie magician is awesome and I love how they tied everything together with the use of magic tricks. Bubblevicious: Bubbles goes HARDCORE! That's all that needs to be said. Just Another Manic Mojo: It's always amusing when villains have low-key days, and this is no exception. Having the girls act like local kid neighbors made this one even more entertaining. That, and one of my favorite lines in the show ("I have forgotten my wallet! Curses."). Uh Oh Dynamo: Both the fights and the titular robot were awesome, and I liked how they showed more of the Professor's worrying dad side. Learning about the anime that inspired the mecha made me appreciate it even more.

While I agree that instrumentation is an important factor in music composition, what makes THAT track "creepy" (or eerie) is that high pitched/"scratched" sound that appears on the left speaker while it slowly descends to a much lower note, it's known as a "glissando". Of course, the dissonant chords also play a role.
I unfortunately wasn't around during the golden age of The Powerpuff Girls, but I remember getting into the original series from one of your videos and ever since I properly checked it out, it's become my favorite show of all time, and I agree that it doesn't always get the recognition it truly deserves. You not only put our appreciation for this masterpiece into a proper retrospective, but also went above and beyond. You helped me fully realize how great this show truly is and it's all fueled me with overwhelming inspiration as someone who admires and practices animation. I've been thinking about the possibility of this video for a long time and to sit down for 5 hours and watch the whole thing was truly an almost mystically wonderful experience. I agree with basically everything that was said. I don't even need to explain what I love about this show because every possible thing about it was stated in the video. I hold a great amount of respect for this series and your coverage on it's first season. It's so surreal to hear all your unabridged opinions after all these years. Great job with this review! That decade of conception and hard working production really paid off!

Out of all the classic episodes, The Rowdyruff Boys was my favorite largely from how it offered a new challenge for the girls. The girls were always stronger than their foes and were only put on the rope because said villains either tricked them or had dumb luck on their side. Here, the Rowdyruff boys basically asks the question of what would happen if the girls were put against someone who was already on their own levels in terms of superpowers and the results were not pretty. It's here that the girls struggle to defeat the boys because they have never fought anyone on their own level, let alone three, especially ones more willing to fight dirty. This was one of the few times where the girls genuinely struggled until Mrs Bellum told them the boys weaknesses. It was such a creative episode

I remember the WHAT A CARTOON shorts competition they did and ppl voted on shows. The audition for this one had bubble and fuzzy and he made her hair a chicken wing lol I was so happy it won and became a full series! There was another pilot I liked called FISH AND CHIP I wish got picked up but didn’t. It was so cool to watch the pilots and see what shows got greenlit
I finally finished the video, and given the length, I can see why it's your favorite series. I didn't have cable for most of my childhood, so I didn't watch PPG that much, but my VHS of Scooby-Doo's Greatest Mysteries included Boogie Frights at the end. My favorite episodes of this season are probably Mime for a Change, The Bare Facts, and Boogie Frights. Also, I now have to picture what you look like with long hair lol. Great video!

Excellent video! I don’t think the bumper you were talking about with Fuzzy on his chair exists but there *was* a collection of bumpers that were just a simple scene on loop for about 15 seconds with the CN logo and “Screwy, Ain’t It?” under it, fading in near the end. I think they stopped doing these before PPG premiered.

I noticed when you were talking about the Howie Scream in Paste Makes Waste, you seemed you be referring to the wrong scream since while it is used in that same scene, the clip you showed was the "Eyaghh! Eyaghhhh!" scream afterwards which I have heard in several shows as well, mainly in various PPG episodes but occasionally other stuff like Dexter's Lab and My Life as a Teenage Robot. The Howie Scream is probably mostly remembered by animation fans for being the last scream used in the intro to "Aaahh!! Real Monsters."

Also for Octi Evil, purple is made of blue and red. With Him's colour scheme being red, Bubbles' is blue, so they get put together. For Paste Makes Waste, what Elmer does when he becomes a paste monster is in line with things like Stephen King's novella Carrie. This shy, colourless girl is bullied mercilessly and then starts to develop her power. When she's pushed too far, she does what Elmer does - attacks everyone without discriminating. Except instead of apologizing, Chris tries to run her over.

Now this is a passion project! Just got done listening to this, and I offer my congratulations and support for the next 5 of these. The Powerpuff Girls wasn’t a show I was there for during its run, but it still reran often when I was in primary school. (2001 baby btw) Season 1 was still popular in my day. I still remember watching Bubblevicious and Boogie Frights for the first time, and being amazed by the creativity and daringness they exuded. Those are just a few of my Powerpuff memories, but your’s were fun to hear, and added significantly to this feeling like a celebration of the show, as much as an episode-by-episode analysis. As for my opinions on Season 1, some of my favourite episodes include Octi Evil, Bubblevicious, The Bare Facts and Mime for a Change, and my least favourites are Ghesundfight and Paste Makes Waste. This is gonna be amazing.
Wasn't Bubblevicious nominated for some kind of award? I think it's probably the reason why Bubbles is a favourite with so many fans, particularly the kids like me who started watching when they were tiny.

@gracekim25 Me too! Back in the VCR days when they released five episodes on each one, Twisted Sister was a featured episode on one of them - each video featured one on the cover. Other cover featured episodes included Monkey See, Doggie Do, Boogie Frights, Dream Scheme and Bubblevicious.
I have so many memories of this first season. Don't remember the episode title, but one of the first episodes I watched was the one where the girls were having their birthday party. I also have a lot of fond memories of playing the flash games on the CN website and waiting for forever for the games to load on dial up. Thank you so much for doing this video! *Edited to add* I remember the Fuzzy Lumpkin bumper, too!

Fuzzy?.. and HIM?" 5:11:50 That part with their reactions and all of them crying (shown at 5:12:58), was one of the times the show made me feel genuinely disturbed. It doesn't make matters better due to the fact that the voice acting in that scene makes it sound like the actors themselves really are crying, in a disturbingly realistic manner, as far as I remember, given that I was pretty overwhelmed by it. It also made me not want to watch the episode for a long time. It's a good thing their tears can bring them back to life.
I remember when my mom made me a bubbles dress that I could wear regularly, and I wanted to wear it all the time. I loved her as a kid to the point in second grade I wanted everyone to call me 'bubbles' and wrote that as my name on worksheets and tests. love you still to this day, bubbles
I've got some kind of trauma with "paste makes waste" and that episode about Mitch abusing the school's pet that becomes a monster, everytime I watch those episodes I feel like crying so much, I don't know why those episodes affect me this way, I just feel horribly sad watching them, even as an adult
Also: Chris Savino wrote Mommy Fearest and Tough Love. He is an evil bastard (although I am a *healthy* Loud House fan) but he is mostly good at writing.

@@ShadowStreak Impressive. Also, as someone who's watched your PPG content for years, it feels great to see you talk about the classic PPG rather than that reboot. Season 1 in my opinion was a great introduction season and it had a lot of great stories. Bubblevicious, The Bare Facts, Uh Oh Dynamo, Octi Evil and Boogie Frights are examples of episodes that always stood out to me

Talking about this episode, I also LOVE the gangreen gang, but unlike you, I thought Craig's main inspiration was Matt Damon's solo project/band Gorillaz. Also, Ace looks so similar to former Alice in Chains' singer Layne Staley, who was rumored to having had gangrene in the 2000 Live Concert DvD (using sunglasses so that he could, supposedly, hide it), a year before his sudden passing due to drug overdose.
I used to stay up until midnight during the weekend to watch this show. The Powerpuff girls, Courage the cowardly dog and Samurai Jack were my favorites.😊 What a nostalgia trip this has been 😄 minus a few things such as, this not being a dub and the episode titles weren't being told to you by the narrator. (something I kept waiting the whole vidoe for😂) And then remembering that Fuzzy Lumpkins has a very weird name change in the Swedish dub, "Läbbe Slusko" Läbbe being taken from the slang för Läskig= Crummy/Nasty. And Slusko= Slop + an O, so I guess "Nasty SlopO" (what, even?) Kinda out there but kinda also instyle with the miss rep Fuzzy gets in the his first episode I guess. 🤔
