Okay I have a lot to say. My parents divorced when I was 5, but every year on my birthday both of my parents promised to get along and take me to a local pizza place so we could all have dinner as a family. The pizza place had a small arcade of 3 games and 1 claw machine, but one of those games was area 51. My dad and I used to play it every time. We had this tradition for nearly a decade and sometimes my dad and I would go just the two of us. This memory is even more special to me now after my dad passed away last year. Second, i laughed soooooo hard when you compared blacksite to cod because when I was in 7th grade i had $20 that a friends parents gave me because when i was staying at their house for a weekend, i helped them paint the inside of their house. (Their family was very wealthy and we were very poor). Well anyways, i wanted to get cod4 so bad but it was $60…but walmart had blacksite for $20 lol. (I still have the big box on my shelf lol). I only had a ps2 at the time but we sid have a family pc that could somehow run it on low. One thing that drove me nuts was that the steering for the car was done with the mouse and not the wasd keys. I do agree that the levels were really cool like the gas station. And that the alien designs were great. I also remember that the pistol fired as fast as you could pull the trigger, so i MASHED that button lol. There was even a in game tool tip that told you to do this. Even in 7th grade i remember thinking the iraq intro was weird. And i also remember it being the first “next gen” game i ever had and I thought that bloom and motion blur were crazy looking compared to my bargain bin ps2 games lol. Lastly, i REALLY like your video. I absolutely love that you always find something positive to say about each game even if they are all fairly mediocre. I subscribed because of it. I also appreciate that you mentioned some fairly obscure games and just assumed that people knew enough about each of them lol. It just made me feel like you really knew your audience of in-the-know gamers if that makes sense. (Such as stranglehold, i feel like a lot of youtubers wouldn’t just name drop that one as an example and would use something more well know ) Thanks for the video, it gave me some fond memories to look back on. My first thought when the video came up on my feed was “other than me, who is this video for?” LOL
Thank you for sharing the happy memories. I'm sorry to hear about your dad; I'm happy that you have that fond memory with him, though, that's wonderful. I'm super stoked you noticed the little mentions and references; the script is so important to me, so it's nice to hear stuff like that. Cheers ✌️
The original Area 51 arcade game got a kind-of sequel actually called Site 4: Area 51. I remember seeing it at my local bowling alley years ago when it was still in business.
It was glorious! I always found the first one kinda boring, compared to most rail shooters. I came across one of the cabs when on Ebay when I was 18, the full size one too. Not buying it was a big regret.
@@HyperTensionJohnny Don't remember. It was so long ago, and I was pretty young. The business itself closed down after it got flooded in the mid 2000s (it was one of those basement style places where you went downstairs to the main entrance). I have played the PS1 version of the original at a friend's place multiple times, and enjoyed it very much.
I used to work at Gamestop while i was a senior in high school. Our store still had a copy of Blacksite Area 51 for the PS3 and our manager let us play it for a bit in his office since no ever bought it.
I played them all but i never made the connection that they were all one series/franchise hahaha. I just thought area-51 was a generic enough thing to not be a copyright property and that they were all completely unrelated lol
Awwwww yeah! I loved the original arcade Area 51. I only got to play the demo of the PS2 one, and I thought it was cool as hell. Killer work as always, dude!
Hey just saying I discovered you a few days ago (the Double Agent video) and I then went on to binge all your videos hahah. Excellent work! Some of the best vids I’ve seen!
The old movie theatre arcade in the 90s... i remember this game but never played it all that much because it was next to a time crisis and that old terminator shooter which usually got more of my attention..... got another title to add to the pawn shop collection list though :) Great video as always, thank you for the quality content, hope you keep them coming
I only saw Area 51 site 4 in the wild once. It plays the same but with better boss fights. Casinos used to have full-time smoke-free arcade rooms. I remember Area 51 on Tiger Electronics LCD handheld being passed around.
God, I loved that 2005 reboot of Area 51! If there ever was an obscure Console Shooter that’s NOT Criterion’s “Black” or even the original Killzone that deserves the modern remake treatment…it’s that game. Not only would they force David Duchovny to step up his…game…in the Recording Booth to give us a more compelling narrative but if they had the cajones to bring back Marilyn Manson and expand both of their roles at the same time, I could see it becoming a booming franchise again if they also brought in Grant Morrison to punch up the craziness (since he was at one time shopping his script for the 2005 game’s movie adaptation) while adding some modern amenities. Blacksite Area 51 was just WAY TOO BLAND (in a Haze kind of way) to ever impress anyone outside of some gameplay mechanics; the original Arcade light gun game by Atari is still worthy of a look and even console ports imo This was a franchise I wish went somewhere since it punched above its own weight in the narrative/worldbuilding but fell apart with the gameplay (still fun to play albeit pretty anemic today) and plot 🤷🏽♂️ WB Games, I know you have the rights! Get to it!
1. Love your use of six dollar words. No cap as the kids say 2. Site 4 is really fun. My local arcade atill has it, but i could never beat it fast enough
I remember dumping quarters into 51 and Site 4 at my local bowling alley when I was a little dude. Site 4 was dope as hell. I remember liking it more than the original, but found it much harder. I don't think I could dig up a better memory only review though. I was also poor so I never got close to beating Site 4 (I think). I was always more of a Time Crisis and Silent Scope goober.
@@HyperTensionJohnny Hell yeah! Every time I am even remotely around some cabinets I ALWAYS look for Silent Scope. I don't find it often but when I do I remind myself why I loved it and curse my aging vision. Haha!
As someone who played it(was at some "retro" games and pinball machine store in a mall), yeah I liked it. Was more like a collection of mini games than an actual sequel. Still pretty nice. Just wish the Area 51 site 4 machine I played was in better condition.
@@HyperTensionJohnny you’re going to need to either emulate or use a 360 for the darkness 1. Darkness 2 is on steam(tip turn V sync off when you play as the darkling cause with it on you get stuck in a vent).
I really liked Area 51 2005. Hoping it gets remastered for both current consoles and pc one day. Lots of awesome FPS games like this one from the 2000s and early 2010s that just aren't available to buy. Blacksite Area 51 could've been great, but they definitely released it undercooked. I still don't get why it wasn't an actual sequel to Area 51 2005. As for the arcade original, memories of playing it at actual arcades unlocked. I think I did find a cheap used PS1 copy and bought it. Shame you can't use light guns with current HD tvs. Unfortunately, WB owns Area 51, The Suffering, and Psi Ops The Mindgate Conspiracy. They're a horrible game publisher.
I love Site 4. I actually kinda think the OG is kinda garbage. It looks good, but I find a lot of older rail shooters are way better. Would much rather play Space Gun or I even the home version of Virtua Cop.
