As a BP resident, I do have to agree that the BPLRT is completely horseshit and I avoid it whenever I can. It's so uncomfortable and doesn't even save that much time as compared to taking the bus. Not sure why it still exists considering the fact that the whole reason it was built was to bypass traffic held up by the KTM train, and the KTM no longer exists so?? I'm still very perplexed by LTA's decision to upgrade the LRT instead of demolishing it
As a BP resident, the Bukit Panjang LRT is the superior of all the LRTs and as our former minister of transport kaw boon wan once said, it is exactly like a roller coaster
1:30 I used to *_really_* hate the TEL exit signs, but I now prefer them over the traditional exit signs as the Locality Map and Exit Directory are much more useful since they contain all the exits and nearby landmarks. The only thing is that they should put those on the platform itself as at some stations (e.g., Woodlands), different escalators go to different exits. My personal ratings would be: *Bukit Panjang LRT (1/10)* - Extremely bumpy, acceleration & braking are extremely violent, announcements work half of the time, and noisy from the outside. *Circle Line (4/10)* - Dark, crowded, noisy, old. *Downtown Line (5/10)* - Crowded all times of the day, and side to exit at each station thing you mentioned at 4:50 *North East Line (7/10)* - Smooth and comfortable, can get a seat most of the time, and is quite fast. Just nothing interesting about the trains or station design. *East-West Line - (8/10)* - Classic, fast, and comfortable, but I can never get a seat at most stations. *Thomson-East Coast Line (8/10)* - New, comfortable, and nice station designs, but a bit slow due to the route it takes. I still rely on NSL for most of my NorthSouth journeys. *North-South Line (9.5/10)* - OG line and somehow still the best. Although using the same trains as EWL, NSL feels less crowded even when going to/from the CBD during peak hours (and empty trains are a plus). NSL also has better scenery than EWL. -0.5 cause it keeps breaking down
@@jtho8937 Well, old as in the stations and train designs look very old, despite the line being less than 15 years old. The darkness and dullness of the stations and trains gives the impression that it was designed ages ago, and the crowdedness at the stations also gives off the same impression that they didn't future-proof it when designing the line. Also at some stations (e.g. one-north) the signs have not been replaced since forever and you can see the yellow stains on them.
In defense of the NEL, ~There are train waiting times. For some reason the station you visited (Outram Park) had some system issues on that day ~i gotta agree that it is quite crowded and packed, though its still quite efficient considering the minimal delays it had caused over the 20 years. ~System wise, NEL itself is quite dated and yes there are different chimes (the lower one is recorded earlier in 2003 and the newer ones were updated versions) ~There are tunnel lights for all underground systems, just depends if the operator wants it to be turned on. ~The announcements can get muffled at times, but its more or less improved with the new refurbed C751AR ~The noise control on the NEL, CCL and DTL are fairly more well controlled compared to the kawasaki ones (NSEWL/TEL) ~Acceleration and braking wise, i gotta agree on that. also SBS>SMRT :D (coming from NEL user)
agreed, the refurbished C751A is a breath of fresh air. although i can't figure out why the info panel above the doors feel quite laggy though (if you look at the video playing at the right side of the screen), maybe the computer is underpowered
Thanks for this video man! Gonna use it in class to enhance my swtudents' writing on scenarios in an mrt train. A feast for the senses. Best alternative to bringing the whole lot down to an actual station itself.
Actually I prefer DTL lighting somewhat over TEL cuz it feels calmer. Esp since you're commuting & passing by the same stations everyday, the lighting on TEL feels very overwhelming and overstimulating
I think you missed out on the Sengkang LRT. I think it's a little different compared to Punggol, in that the LRT was built after the HDB blocks were built, compared to the Punggol line being built around the LRT line instead. Might want to check it out as well, the feel is slightly different in my opinion.
wanted to do this for the longest time but never got the courage to. You accomplished something extraordinary and I wish I could be as courageous as you to complete such a time consuming task. Jordan, you are a walking w man. Dont let anyone tell you otherwise
Glad that the algorithm recommended this, especially since I've recently started reading up on the MRT system. Thanks for this video, I believe the ratings are quite accurate! I agree with your points, but I want to try and explain some things: (Assuming that your journey was Springleaf -> Woodlands -> Choa Chu Kang -> Bukit Panjang -> Botanic Gardens -> Buona Vista -> Outram Park -> Punggol LRT) 1. Yeah, Bukit Panjang LRT is bad. They built the infrastructure in Bukit Panjang first, before the LRT, so the LRT has to avoid all those buildings. While the LRT in Sengkang and Punggol were planned together with the infrastructure, so it's much better there. 2. There are not one, but two CCL - EWL interchanges, Buona Vista and Paya Lebar, but yeah Buona Vista is way closer to Botanic Gardens. 3. Why is the EWL so crowded? If you look at our MRT map, should one live in the west, the only line to get out of the west and towards the CBD is really just the EWL. So even tho they use 6 carriage trains for EWL, it's quite crowded. 4. It makes sense for Outram Park to be crowded too. If you look closely, it is the only EWL - NEL interchange, as well as the only EWL - TEL and only NEL - TEL interchange! Overall great video, and I hope I helped to answer some of your questions!
Great video! TEL would score the highest for me if it only has more seats. EWL at 7 is being too kind, since it’s the worst travelling experience for me with barely-there air conditioning and a stench that can only come from sweaty students and PMEBs. Also, a new fleet of train is in order as it also feels the most worn.
As Indonesian who loves Singapore as a city so much, this is my dream to conquer in the future! To ride every single MRT / LRT Line in Singapore! Great video and explanation Jordan! You have a very soothing voice Keep up the good work and continue vlogging unique videos like this! Cheers
my response to this video 1:11 It's caused by the tunnel noises. Not the train itself, although some do have very loud flatwhells 3:29 There are announcements on the trains. Its just on some units that they're either too soft or they completely spoiled. Even if the announcements could be hardly audible, there will be station announcements saying "train departing, please stand back" 4:37 Hume station 👀 5:04 train enthusiasts be like: "pathetic" 7:29 nonKSF fans would like to know your location 7:51 There are waiting times. When you went to outram park station, the system glitched and it didn't show the next train time 8:11 it differs between trains 8:23 I think you were in a train that had very loud flatwheels or a very strong motor.
@@thetheatreorgan168 also nel, nsl and ewl at peak hours. nel to harbourfont crowded in morning and night to punngol crowded but to punggol and to harbourfront in morning and night respectively is pleasant.
Well done Jordan for an honest and unbiased review. As a foreigner, I enjoyed your video as it was helpful and did notice you did have a sense of humour, which I must add is essential for such a video. You have done Singapore proud and keep them videos coming.
To be fair to the NSL and EWL, they are both old lines. The train you rode on the EWL is the old first gen Kawasaki C151 train and most of the trains running on the EWL are old while the NSL is using mostly newer ones after SMRT swapped the fleets in 2018 for some reason. For the TEL, despite the noise, it is a pretty decent line, the doors closing warning is good enough, better than the NEL, so I don't see what's bad about it. The exit signs yeah, can be improved much.
SMRT probably minimizes the use of older rolling stock on NSL (C751B & older) probably as they're gradually being replaced by R151s, so their route maps haven't been upgraded to be able to include Canberra MRT that was built in 2019
4:51 I not a Singaporean. But I just visited SG and stayed near DTL. I could have sworn the lights for the doors always flash up no matter how near the next station is
I really agree with the TEL being noisy part...omg. an what's worse is that when I put on a noise cancelling earphone I can literally hear the wheezing sound of the air that's getting in to the cars urghh
i remember accidentally taking the west loop of punggol and the lrt just casually opeed the door at teck lee.Very funny,no wonder no other trains stopped there fr
hi Jordan, great video you have there! 👍 admire your time and effort to explore our MRT lines. just curious - do you recall how long the entire journey took and how much you paid for the transport fare in the end?
You forgot 1 more LRT line: Sengkang LRT But I can forgive because it's similar to the Punggol LRT Also, at 7:28, the train you were talking about (newer train) was a C151B. And the reason it (C151) shakes so much is because it's the FIRST MRT rolling stock that has been around for YEARS and YEARS! EDIT: omg 10 likes in 1 day the like growth is fast for now EDIT 2: omg skipped straught to 30, close to 40, first time i had many likes EDIT 3: OMG 40 LIKES!!! EDIT 4: YEYYYY 50 LIKES!!!!!!!!! edit 5: 60! 60! 60! 60! 60! 60!
Sengkang LRT I would give 5/10. It's sort of worse than the Punggol LRT, in that it's similar that it doesn't shake as much, but the turning makes it hard to balance. Example, Sengkang to Ranggung. The train turns at such a sharp angle that a lot of times I stumble. The stations themselves very dated also. Yellowing in many parts of the walls, and for some reason the column's rubber parts got a few places missing??
All LRT i'll give 1/10. They are a disaster to begin with, designed for masochists. There are no escalators, only stairs and lifts, and the lifts are hot like sauna all the time. The platforms at BP LRT's stations are split to both sides, with the tracks in the middle, meaning if you climb up the wrong side, you've to go down and climb up the other way. SK and PG ones fixed this problem for most of the stations but Fernvale station is still designed this way for god knows what reason. The stations are not manned so if you encounter any issues with the gantry, you might as well just give up and take the bus instead. And don't' get me started on SK station. SK East and SK West shares the same tracks there, and one can only know which direction it's going by looking at the electronic signage, many people who are not familiar with the place, or old people who can't read English, will often end up taking the wrong train to the wrong direction.
If a C651 had showed up instead when using the NSL, the A/C would've been weaker, & you get more but narrower seats (my shoulders would end up bumping into the adjacent passenger's)
Nice video I was waiting for purple line. Good review and good to know your opinions and how it just weighs in with your score that helps me understand it.
Also, The Bukit Panjang LRT right, They should add the doors to making much more safely. And the carriage was not that shaky, and the famous glass, every glass pane wasn't broken. 6.5/10.
I absolutely loved this video haha I'd never thought about the smells of the MRT... I have to say, DTL will forever have a special place in my heart and is my favourite!
To be fair, you should also consider in the context of the train lines. NSEWL are the og ones so they should be given some slack. NEL has the least amoumt of stations out of all the lines besides LRT, so maybe the gov felt that it was not really needed to go all high quality like the downtown line. Idk, my opinion.
It is great effort to take a trip down every line! Love the intricate details you find out about the stations and the train itself Here's a two pence to further improve the content of this video quality! Read up on other countries' subway/tube/train and do a great comparison with SG's! You had yet to hear UK's underground rail, they are so screechy, you have to plug your ear, or anytime you might risk going deaf Take the time to identify the model of the train? And why the functionality are built so as Enjoyed the video and cheers to future videos!
For the UK I think its because their trains leave some windows open for ventilation, as they don't have A/C, so more noise from the tunnel enters the train cars
My most favourite is The Thomson East Coast Line. Due to the animated screen above the doors, It feels much more perfectly. However, The screen on the ceiling of the train could be much better.
The dot matrix display is underutilized except on NSEWL & DTL, as they don't tell you what lines you can transfer to at interchange stations. Those on TEL are also often blank. They should get to show the name of the next stop instead of having the colour displays above each door to do so, & let the colour displays show the line map all the time, instead of alternating between that & the next stop's name
Circle line going through every highly populated are is the reason it gets so crowded. However, used to live in Macpherson made me kinda enjoyed that line.
Maybe you could consider making a series of vlogs reviewing every single MRT station in the similar way highlighting the pros and cons of each station including location convenience, the entry/exit locations and designs, etc.
@@boiboiboi201 Hence I suggested a series. This is an idea for you to create useful content that people would appreciate. I would particularly appreciate too if you could highlight the art and architectural distinctiveness of those better looking or designed stations.
@@harrytan9035 shameless plug here, but here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mfy7byY-U34.html am making a roughly detailed guide to every MRT station in SG as part of a series of guides, link is for a trailer and yes, made with very low effort lol
@@harrytan9035 ru-vid.com/group/PLhhQlZ1m_3i30sgy1IIyz-XNVt4jr56YR A small youtuber in the country is trying make this possible. minus the architectural or design aspect of station aside, probably something you're looking for?
EW line person here. I don't know why I was always excited to ride the Bukit Panjang LRT when I was a kid. Maybe its because of the novelty factor for me as a person who rides the EW line 95% of the time.
I finally clicked on this video, it’s on my recommended for so long that I keep seeing it every time I visit RU-vid. TEL is pretty fast too, live nearby one of the stations and the time to reach Caldecott interchange feels damn fast as compared to the red or green line.
US resident here, but frequent visitor to Singapore. A few comments: First off, nice video. Although isn’t there an LRT in Sengkang or is that just an extension of the Punggol Line? As to the TEL, we rode it about a week after the extension that included Havelock Station was open. I thought it was a very rough and very loud ride. We were just back in Singapore a few weeks ago, and rode from Havelock out to Parkway Parade. Much quieter and much smoother ride. Maybe the wheels needed some grinding down on the tracks to make them smoother. I’ve always seen next train time postings at NEL stations. Maybe a system problem the day you filmed. Not a fan of the Punggol LRT at all. We much preferred the bus. We always got confused as to which arm of the line we should get on. Slow learners. While I don’t mind the NS and EW lines, they’re both pretty regularly crowded and I find the NS Line to be slow. Haven’t taken the Circle Line enough to have an opinion. I like the Downtown Line. It got me out of a problem when a bus we took from KL to Sing left before we could clear Singapore immigration (pre-automated gate times). As a U.S. resident, however, I can safely say that ANY city in the U.S. would leap at the chance to have a subway system even 10% as good, clean and efficient as Singapore. You guys are truly lucky to have it.
i want to fly back soon. From Changi Airport to Woodlands Mrt, which line one is faster & easier? Transfer at B.Merah then City Hall or the Circle line via paya Lebar?
Your video is helpful, Just a quick question: Right in the beginning, east west line, I see a beautiful building. Is that New Creation Church? If yes, what station is that exactly? We're planning to visit that church next week. It would be really helpful if you answer. Thank you.
As for the NEL, it does have waiting time. It is just the screen that you are looking at, that means the next train is less than 1 min away from reaching the station. It is weird that you did not realize but every MRT line does not indicate when the waiting time is < 1min. Prob you don't take the MRT line often.
The funniest thing about the BPLRT is that one of its stations was built next to a ITE causing extreme congestion before and after school overstaining the small LRTs. The outram park station is also the 2nd last line in the northeast line hence it is extremely crowded not to mention having 3 mrt lines interject into each other, its practically how most people vet onto the northeast line
I think I'm the only one that likes the bumpyness of the bplrt, maybe just coz I only ride it for fun ahha and not for actual transport; and also because I like the feels and don't care that much about comfort Lol Also the background music sounds like gravity falls 💀💀💀
I really agree with how BAd the new signages are, although they claim it is "Simplified", they have added 1 extra step for commuters to way find and that is walking up to a destination signboard to find out which exit has what there...
Maybe LTA was worried about the escalators at the end of the station platforms with the more popular exits getting more crowded, if passengers knew in advance which escalator points to which exit
I'll be honest, I don't know how this popped up in my YT recs. I have like 0 interest when it comes to trains or any vehicle of transport, but watching this is somewhat soothing for some reason
That's the beauty of Geoff Marshall-style rail videos which average people love to watch, and I hope Jordan could do Least Used Station SG MRT video, also I'm considering doing similar stuff for Seoul Metro.
Actually, you cannot see outside the BP LRT because it passes by HDBs and whenever it passes by them, the windows automatically blur for privacy 😅. I guess it’s actually a good thing.
3:09 i live in sao paulo, and i have the same experience with the city's monorail line 15, i only rode it just to complete the list of lines of the sp rail network lines, and i didn't knew that the train ran very bumpy 💀💀💀
In defense of BPLRT, children love the ride. In defense of NEL, EWL, they endured 15-20 years of abuse and neglect before a minister miraculously saved them in 5 years. But the damage was done. It could have been 10/10 like the ageless Madonna/Demi Moore.
LRT works like a tram , which is placed beside the mrt . Only one lane is used . Queue platform not wide enough or big enough , that is why I agree LRT get the lowest rating in all the lines in Singapore
I just wanted to point out that not all LRT lines in Singapore are bumpy like said in the video. For example , as a punggol resident , I can definitely tell you that I have nothing bad to say about our LRT lines
Out of all, I have been riding all the trians in Singapore. My ranking ___________ - 6. North South Line - 5. North East line - 4. East West line - 3. Circle Line - 2. Thomson East-Coast line - 1. Downtown Line For LRT _______ Sengkang/Punggol Line is better than Bukit Panjang LRT
3:29 Reminds me of someone idk who run through a closing train door just before they got crushed(I saw personally but didn't record) Don't try that and don't trust LRTs? I guess? But fr don't actually try to slip through a closing door like that other guy did
NSEWNEL station toilets are traditionally wet & musty but ongoing renovation is giving them some hope for now. CCDTL station toilets are cleaner but small (except on DTL stage 1 & CCL stages 1 & 2). TEL toilets are bigger & clean, but now the renovated NSEWNEL toilets feel more premium than TEL ones
can you do an ultimate objective, unbiased tests of all the telcos and mvnos network in Singapore? similar to how Angel Hsu tasted and lab tested chicken rice from 100 stalls in Singapore. very curious to know how true are all telcos claims about 5G and near 100% coverage. perhaps selected mrt stations that are more crowded in mornings and evenings, at mrt stations & below ground? or selected tourists spots, popular hangout places all around Singapore?
You forgot to assess also the toilets on all these lines man. Not trying to be funny here - it does make a huge diff to the experience of regular users. NEL Is absolute shite because it's so old, at night the aircon is macam off, the toilets are horrid, and it's perpetually crowded (you're right), because it is such a short line with six interchanges. CCL is actually not really crowded except between Bishan and Serangoon. Very pleasant except it's really loud. DTL is the best overall in my opinion as trains are nice and new, smooth, and crowd levels are usually ok. Toilets are the best here, and the stations are very well maintained and quite decently designed (I disagree with you on this point).
As a BP resident now, I would like to say that there is announcements and there are also new trains. I think is probably because of that exact train...
i have a question for you, will you be taking and rating the sengakng lrt, jurong region line, cross-island line, johor baru singapore RTS? and will you also rate every single bus?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Singapore’s MRT and LRT lines. Since you live in a rich and modern country, it’s understandable you gave low scores to some of them. Many countries would love having what Singapore already has.
For the TEL is mostly curving so it is the noisiest because on the NSL I forgot which part but between somewhere is from Newton to Dhoby Ghaut where it curves. All trains have headlights but circle line is so dim, when I saw the plastic on the headlights it is so dirty and yellow from being old. It also does not do it justice like the TEL AND DTL where they use blue or white LEDs
