I wanted to start commuting to work because I wanted to be more comfortable and fluid on my bike. Here I share what I learned about making commuting on a motorcycle work when going into a professional office, and my thoughts on whether or not I will continue after the 21 days was over.
3 years later, now full time with RU-vid, does this challenge still hold up?

Girl, ride at your own pace. Don't worry about people you perceive as being better than you. I have been into skateboarding, mountain biking and now motorcycling. What I have learned is that there will always be people that are better than you at certain things. I'm not saying don't work to progress, what I'm saying is do your thing, don't worry about anyone else.

Yeah, commuting does a ton for a rider's confidence. I've had my license for a couple weeks and I've been thrown into the deep end, as it were, because my usual daily driver vehicles have been broken for that time. I've had to ride in 30⁰ weather and once in the light rain. I have already learned a ton.

Sounds like you had fun. I was doing 120 miles a day for 6 years. Riding in rain, snow, hail, and sands storms with wind gust up to 80 mph. The more situation you are in. The better of a rider you will become. Keep with it.

@TheBikerboy86
@TheBikerboy86 2 года назад
@@letsfloatxkg1314 Yes, get yourself an adventure bike. Like a Triumph Tiger or a BMW GS. The riding position is better, you can carry extra items better, better wind protection, and heating grips. When I was riding 120 miles a day. I had a 2007 Yamaha R1. Fast bike and reliable bike but those cold mornings and high winds at night just sucked. I’m currently riding a Tiger 800xc. It’s fast and comfortable. I love the heated grips.

I commuted for 2.5 years solely by motorcycle in Maryland. It definitely made me a better rider. Riding in the rain helps you with throttle control and really knowing the limits on tires and different surfaces for traction. Watch out for wet wooden bridges lol. A Aerostich or Klim one peice makes it so much less of a pain to get suited up in the morning as well, 30 seconds on and off and it’s good through all kinds of bad weather. Watching “a twist of the wrist” and the total control books then working on weak points during the commute helps a lot as well. Research your roads and see if you have a few good twisty paths home.
@BobJones20001
@BobJones20001 4 года назад
@kalimarus. You aren't just describing what bike riding has taught you, your describing why you are now a better driver. It's something a non rider will never accept, riders are better drivers due to road surfaces and changing conditions affecting bikes to a much higher degree than cars. Good comment.

I recently sold my car as it was fairly old and becoming more costly to maintain. I have since been commuting on my motorcycle for everything. I go shopping, I get groceries, and I go to work. I started driving my bike to work more often around the end of last year as my car was having problems and I had grown tired of getting stuck in the parking lot waiting for a tow. I 100% agree that riding to work is that pick me up that helps make work just a little more tolerable. I feel more peppy when I come into work and I am looking forward to leaving work even with traffic as I feel so much more confident on my bike than in a car.

As a very experienced rider (40 years now) I am inspired by the quality of the comments I am reading here. I started watching curious on what a new rider thought and felt, it is so long ago I wouldn't know what they think or what it feels like to start riding. Totally recommend anyone commute to work, I’ve been doing it almost since I started riding just over a year ago. Living in the SoCal area, I was anxious over beating the traffic and riding my bike was the solution! I definitely had to adjust my routine in many of the same ways you mentioned, like I basically shifted my hours I went in to allow some time for me to change for work that day after the ride, and I was also conscious of wear I parked my bike and ensuring it didn’t attract too much attention, but I found tips and tricks over time and made it work, and like you, have found commuting by bike to be an absolute god send! Here’s a tip if you haven’t yet done so, ever take your bike out during your lunch break for a fun ride? 😉

I gotta say, the transformation from your bike gear to office appearance blew my mind when you show how good your hair looked by the time you were finished. Seriously, I don't know of anyone who can pull off decent hair without some serious brushing or even wetting their hair first because of helmet head - myself included, and I have short very easy to manage hair! P.S. I ride the 2019 KTM Duke 390 (named "The Duchess") and the crash bars I installed have ensured the two times I dropped it didn't leave a scratch - once en route to a motorcycle riding course, and another DURING the course.

The first thing I learned commuting (more like unlearned) was to give up on full safety gear. In commuting traffic sliding on pavement is not a concern. The concern is either dropping the bike in a slow turn or getting hit. Riding pants and armored jackets aren't going to help you at all. But always wear your helmet. You can get riding boots or high ankle shoes that blend in with business casual attire, but are obviously not oxfords or heels. That's mostly fine for men, but not really going to work if you're wearing capris or a skirt suit. Gloves are easy enough to take off before going inside. Wear a leather jacket if you want, as long as it isn't bedazzled or studded it will pass. Always wear your helmet. In case I forgot to say it, always wear your helmet.
@rightwingsafetysquad9872
@rightwingsafetysquad9872 4 года назад
@Michael Gee If you're in between cars, armored pants and jacket will do absolutely nothing for you. My experience with California freeways is that you're probably moving slower than you are between cars.
@rightwingsafetysquad9872

@Michael Gee I didn't misunderstand. That's why I said my experience with California freeways I was moving slower than I would lane splitting.

Your observation with the weather forecast is exactly what I came to. After like 2 weeks straight of it saying 40%+ of rain then me begrudgingly driving home on a perfectly sunny nice day with 100s of other riders out I stopped caring what it said. Only when it's like 50%+ so I start maybe listening and then only if I can see anything moving towards on the radar.

@Jim-fe2xz

I used to ride my bike every day except in the rain. This included commuting to work every day. I stopped when bike riders started riding far more aggressively - splitting lanes even when traffic was already exceeding speed limits, passing cars at far in excess of 20mph faster than traffic, changing lanes at high speed knowing they're hard to see then kicking at cars as they go by. This made car drivers more aggressive toward bike riders taking it out on those of us who don't do these things. A super bike does not make you taller, bigger, stronger, prettier or make up for any of the other insecurities. To all who do these things, please quit screwing it up for the rest of us

Love your enthusiasm!! 👍👍 I started my riding back home in India where my two styles of riding were commuting or touring. And commuting really taught me a lot about Zen riding. You develop situational awareness, finesse technique and have small bouts of experiments which improve you as a rider. It also increases your endurance. I highly recommend it. Now after nearly 150k miles of riding over 20 years I ride more styles but commuting and long expeditions are still my first loves. I highly recommend a Motoport or Roadcrafter suit. Super protective and allow you to keep wearing regular clothes underneath it. I factor 5 mins before and after to gear up and shed my gear. Totally worth it. Stay safe and avoid riding parellel to cars. Riding staggered keeps you away from their blind spots.

You’re really overthinking this whole thing IMHO. Ive been riding since I was 15 and I’ve just turned 73. No more sport bikes or sport tourers. They’ve given way to a Goldwing. One thing to know: the best way to stay safe on a bike is to ride as often as you can, Don’t let the bike sit all week unless there is ice everywhere. You find your reactions are better, comfort is better, panic reactions when they happen can rely on muscle memory. You get more familiar with your bike. If you ride often you will have a better idea of what you like about your scoot and what you don’t. This leads you to more informed accessories. And the muscles in your face willl get better toned because you smile more. I was an IT manager at a glass factory for 28 years and no one ever called my riding to work unprofessional.

Yes, commuting by motorbike is great. The coldest I've commuted in is -16C (3.2F) and the biggest issue at those temperatures is your helmet visor icing up (and its too cold, especially at speed, to even keep it cracked). When commuting, I wear a full Aerostich Roadcrafter. When moving it is fine, even up to our max temps of around 30C (86F) as long as it is open. For colder mornings & temps a GOOD heated vest is wonderful but as my commute was under half an hour I didn't need more than that. On nice afternoons I'd sometimes take the "long way" way. That is, head in the opposite directions and ride through the mountains for a few hours, extending my 1/2 hour commute to over 3 hours of bliss! Keep the parking lot practise up, especially the really slow stuff!

Then I need to get back riding, at least around town. I learned to work with rain and only a thunderstorm stops me completely. A shower, that's just a free bike wash. But I spent 3 months looking through all the tires for teh best wet weather grip and longevity. I do my own maintenance to help my tire budget :)

Congratulations on choosing to commute regularly on a motorcycle. You will definitely see an improvement in your riding skills especially when making manoeuvres at very low speeds and when filtering through slow and stationary traffic :-) I have been commuting by motorcycle every day for the last 30 years - all year round in all weather though in deference to my advancing years I tend not to ride a solo bike on days when the snow is deeper than the axles. One HUGE advantage of commuting by motorcycle is the whole "never, ever being stuck in traffic" thing.

I live in the SF Bay Area where traffic is terrible. A 20 mile drive during commute hours in a car can take anywhere from 45 minutes (on a good day) to 2 hours depending on the behavior of people each day. On a bike it is consistently 30 minutes give or take a few minutes since lane sharing is still legal in CA. For this reason I commuted on my bike every day. Many years back I thought this day would be the last day on this planet but not due to drivers, due to nature. We had a torrential downpour with crazy lightning. I remember thinking to myself that omg this is how I go out. Splitting lanes for 30 minutes is mentally taxing since you have to pay attention above and beyond everyone on the road. It can be quite exhausting when you get to your destination. Who needs caffeine when you're splitting lane (Side note: i still need caffeine). Keep up the great work and keep riding

Commuting is the way to go. I started commuting to save money, but I keep doing it for the benefits you mentioned. Changing clothes can be a pain sometimes, but that's really the only drawback.

I bought a 2020 Yamaha R3 back in November and I've put 13000 miles on it and so far daily commute here in California is amazing lane splitting is awesome and also stress reliving. But again just ride and don't let people judge you.

Absolutely agree Happy Pill🤯I commuted on many different bikes over the years!! It makes you such a better driver, even if your 10-15 mi faster than the flow of traffic!! My current bike is a Ducati Diavel, with Shad hard bags!👍👍 @ 5’4” the low ride height is most welcome, After 20yrs of riding, it’s the first bike I could flat foot on both sides! Keep the rubber side down!!

Honestly, you learn a lot about street riding when you start commuting to work and back because that is when you learn how dangerously people drive their cars during those two times of day. I did it for years on an r1 (not comfy) and I got very good at judging weather lol

The best modification you can make to your bike/car is the driver/rider mod. The best way to upgrade that is without a doubt, seat time. Commuters generally put down double or triple the mileage than weekenders so it kinda makes sense that they would progress faster.

I ride to work as much as I can. If it’s going to be raining a lot I won’t ride but a 40% or under chance of rain is ok with me. I ride a Dorsoduro 900 and love it because I can se over most traffic because of the height. I’m 6’1” and can only get one foot down on it and it bothered me at first but I got used to it quick.

At one point I didn’t have a car 🚗 my wife did and we couldn’t afford a 2nd car. I rode the vstrom to work every day. When I changed jobs and moved to shift work I also switched bikes to a Harley 883 Superlow I rode for 6 years. I both love and hated it. The cost of parking a car at that time was $10 a day or $80 a rotation bikes were free. When I switched over to days I started using the wife’s Mazda 2 and kind of never went back. I got an Iron 883 much later on 2017 still have it and ride mostly on weekends. As a mental health support officer I have to use my car for clients

I commuted to college on my bike almost everyday for 2+ years. I live in NYC, so I learned so much from my daily commute! Now that I work in Manhattan however, the traffic is just horribly miserable. Manhattan traffic is bumper to bumper for 40 mins or more and it's worse at rush hour. I wish I would enjoy commuting to work 😩 It's not fun having cars inches from your handle bars on the FDR or cutting you off dangerously. I've learned to just enjoy my train rides.

I'm glad you grew to like commuting. I hope you get the chance to experience commuting in California. Lane-splitting is an acquired taste, but a necessity for us here. Splitting has its share of advantages and disadvantages...but in all, it definitely helps develop riding skills in urban areas.

You mentioned that riding in stop and go traffic didn't sound like fun, but it can be if you use it as a training tool. I like playing "the slow game" when traffic is creeping along so I can practice being stable at walking speeds. I try and only put my foot down when traffic has completely stopped... Or I've been doing it for a while. When I first started riding I accidentally overused the rear break while practicing my u-turns, didn't realize my mistake until I smelled it... The break disk was glowing... So yeah, not to much, but stop and go traffic is a good training tool.

I commute on my bikes and I tell people that its my decompression chamber. 30 minutes one way to work. My cutoff temp is about 40 degrees because in wisconsin weather is not an exact science. Ive got stuck in 32 degrees. I work 12 hours so a 25 degree difference between going and coming is common. I still love it though.

Commuted in all weathers for almost 20 years now. Just wouldn't take a car unless I really have to. I'll even do errands locally, like drop the kids at school, then go back and get the bike to go to work. It's just more fun that way.

I commuted into London (UK) for years - I mean like decades! Used a light rain suit over my office lounge suit during spring/summer and a heavier jacket overtop for warmth in winter. Filtering - or lane splitting as you would call it - is allowed in the UK and this definitely improves your reactions. I kept filtering speed below about 20 mph. Some go faster but don't give themselves enough time to react to a driver who changes lanes or U-turns suddenly. Riding to work certainly wakes you up and probably increases your output. The 'traffic light grand prix' can be fun and it's nice to rely on your own resources rather than the vagueries of public transport. What your co-workers think is irrelevant. If it suits you do it. Certainly suits a COVID climate.

Cool video. I love zipping past traffic, mostly at the lights and arrive more relaxed cos I have zoned out for the ride. If someone cuts you off, just chill cos they will be in your dust at the next set of lights. I am old male pale etc, a director of multiple companies. Attend most meetings in riding jeans, an Alpinestars leather jacket and business shirt. Park my Honda right outside. People love it! Sometimes change shoes and put on a sports coat. Tend to drive on rare suit days. Use a top box which is uncool but very very handy. Keep it up Doodle!! Ps what is your day job????

Yeah, your findings echo mine. I bought a motorcycle specifically for commuting. You do learn fast when you ride every day on a bike, especially in stop and go traffic. As far as cold days go, I wear thermal undergear, a neck gater, and different gloves, then remove the thermals once I get to work. Then I keep my riding jeans and boots on. Undergear isn't as bulky as overgear, but it does a pretty good job of keeping me warm. Just wait until you commute so much driving feels weird. It happens. Lol.

Thanks for sharing. I have been commuting Daily for last 3 years.(no car for me) Now for me, clothing not an issue as I wear a uniform (UPS driver) I commute about 100 miles or more a week depending if I take the long way home after work. It is Therapeutic to me. Atlanta Traffic tho seems it could be a mess tho. I was just up in Athens GA last weekend and came back to Memphis thru All, but it was early Sunday morning, so was not bad. Oh yeah, the Heated gear is a MUST. I have had a few 20 degree rides into work. It use to bother me riding in the rain or bike getting wet from rain in parking lot . I got over it and realize i just clean it again! 🤣
