Chris Stuckmann reviews I.S.S., starring Ariana DeBose, Chris Messina, John Gallagher Jr., Masha Mashkova, Costa Ronin, Pilou Asbæk. Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite.
I was thinking the same thing. LOL.Such a-GREAT-movie too. I did 7 yrs in the navy ( served on air-craft carriers ) got to go aboard a submarine for a guided tour ( I was actually considering sub-duty ) but, decided not to after that tour. LOL.
@@supermario8134 I like Jeremy because his reviews are less a breakdown of the film's aspects one by one and more of him just saying whatever came to his mind after he watched the movie as a list of no particular organized order. It's a very relatable thing as a typical movie goer in regards to hearing things that might stand out at initial glance which will affect enjoyment.
@@bathcat3759Chris obviously dislikes some films. He just doesn't like making negative review videos and has become more mature with age in terms of delivering criticism compared to other critics who built their entire channels out of rants.
I think it's very accurately rated. Not great, not terrible, above average in general. It's unique in some good ways that make it stand out but boring in others. I love all things space yet found it a bit silly, but I understand why some adore it. But again, as is I think it's rated exactly where it should be.
As a NASA engineer this was a painfully hilarious watch. Worse than Gravity for sure. The micro gravity completely took me out of the movie. Everyone looked like they were wearing diapers to hide harnesses. They were so stiff and their centers of gravity completely off. The way they moved was so off. Also so so many technical inaccuracies that drove me up the wall. Specifically the "drill" known as the PTG has almost no torque and is not going to drill into flesh like that.
Kinda brushed over the film’s ending / third act, eh? Jeremy Jahns mentioned the third act essentially ruined the film, and recommended movie-goers to walk out before the third act, form your own conclusion, and you’d enjoy it more. Would have loved to hear what you thought of its conclusion.
I don't understand how ANYONE can make a movie and consciously ruin the ending, knowing very well that will make everyone hate the whole movie and regret seeing it in the cinema. Just sit down and review the it! Just sit with your crew if you don't have enough brains and ask them what they think about it! Change it! Rewrite so it doesn't suck so badly! Why would you want to ruin people's lives? They paid to go see what you have made! And think about your mother for Christ sake! She will be mentioned so many times if your ending sucks!
@@id104335409"why would you want to ruin people's lives". Okay, calm down with the hyperbolic rhetoric. It's a movie. It's not life altering. I agree that I'd prefer a movie not to have a rubbish third act, but I'd be just mildly disappointed.
What was particularly wrong with the ending? SPOILER WARNING... The only problem I had with it was the fact that I had no idea what they were descending into. Russia? America? etc. But besides that I thought it was fine but I'd love to hear your thoughts
I think the final act, while weaker than the rest of the film, isn't anything different from what many thrillers do, where there's a final conflict. Do I think it makes no sense about the betrayal? Mostly. Do I think it's bad? No. Just average.
I'm surprised Chris has never reviewed/spoken on any of the films by Justin Benson & Aaron Moorehead. They're right up his alley of being weird, thought provoking, sci-fi lower budget projects made by two regular guys who just love making movies and their projects are stuff I usually only even know about because Chris recommends them. I just watched Something In The Dirt and the whole time thought "this seems like something Chris would have recommended"
I dunno. Maybe it's a good movie. I just can't get past the misanthropic premise. The whole world explodes so the last humans alive (who are scientists that are explicitly trained to work together despite national differences) choose to fight to the death over a hunk of metal in space? That's depressing
If you ask me, him not giving criticism and instead giving puff piece reviews, is the biggest middle finger he can give to any filmmaker. It's the equivalent of saying, "I'm not going to help you be a better filmmaker."
I have always wondered what it’s like to be someone that makes a comment like you did and have it be the exact opposite of what happened. He made criticisms throughout the review. He stated the things he didn’t like and why. I’m guessing you want some overly charged, redbull fueled, WWE style interview where he trashes the movie for no good reason. There are probably other channels that do that. Go find them.
I think your review is very even handed and thorough. However I want to add that I see it as a story about human nature and how we react under pressure. I think it was quite important the scenes with the mice. The mice at the beginning being so afraid of the weightless become aggressive with each other and bite each other to death. She finds them all bloody and missing parts. (Not that mice in real life behave that way). And at the end two mice that had stayed calm holding on to the mesh were peaceful and okay. I think was used as a symbol for the people. Kinda like saying that the fact of freaking out on paranoid distrust was their undoing and the two who mostly kept calm were able to weather the crisis. However I think that the most important line of the movie is the very last one, too bad it's said quite softly. She radioes NASA that they are going down, they answer that they are willing to welcome any US astronauts (in other words not the Russian guy). She looks at him, he asks her "Where are we going?" And she answers "I don't know"... and it ends with the important question unanswered... Because it is like nowhere will they be welcomed together as friends because the world has become so polarized.
Yay, Killer Klownz From Outer Space shirt! Now there's a B-movie that knows exactly what it is and has fun with it. And has some surprisingly good practical effects too.
Watch Russian movie The Challenge from last year. It has a pretty good cast and a solid plot but why it's interesting is it was actually filmed on international space station, it is the first movie shot in space. You have real cosmonauts and main actress and director actually went through training and filmed up there.
"Voyage to the Planets" (2004) is my opinion the best space movie. The synopsis, a crew of astronauts aboard an international interplanetary spacecraft Pegasus (ala "Sunshine" (2007)) for mission to Pluto. Along the way, the astronaut visit & conduct exploratory mission on planets & asteroid (ala Star Trek). Some astronaut got what they want for on their mission, some don't, and dies too. Even the ground support crew grow & change as the spacecraft on decade long trajectory.
I don't think her not having someone to contact at home wasn't to disconnect us, but to make us wonder what her life was like on earth to end up not having any loved ones left. I also really digged the zero-g camera, as it helped immerse me in the setting.
I have given up going to the theater. People are jerks and prices are too high. I don’t mind waiting a few months and watching it at home. Thanks for the vid
I went to go see this with a friend yesterday. She’s very picky about the movies that she likes so it was very difficult to find something that I thought both of us would like. And she still wasn’t a big fan of it but I enjoyed the movie. I thought it was pretty cool, and. I obviously cannot say much about the camera work, because as you know, I am totally blind, so there is that aspect.. that said, I thought it was a very gripping tail and one that is extremely cautionary and one that could’ve been avoided if they would’ve just communicated to one another. But then, if everybody was good at communication, we wouldn’t have movies.!
I don't blame your friend. This movie uses every regurgitated trope in the book. Once again, a film about two governments acting like a couple of jackasses on Earth, characters dying pointless deaths and using a tiresome, redundant Cold War trope. I kept thinking about a better plot for the film, and not involving pitting characters against eachother where it ends in paranoia and disaster. I could see the plot execution coming a mile away. This film is an insult to astrophysicists, astronomers, cosmologists and international joint organizations. I don't care how visually impressive, a stunning score or what complex filming techniques was used in this film, a polished turd is still a turd. This reminds me of "The Thing" in terms of self-preservation, tension and paranoia, and irrationality, but without the government intervention. Even the overrated 2001: Space Odyssey had better tension going against a rogue A.I than this uninteresting mess.
Just saw the news about the 'SNL 1975' movie being done by Jason Reitman with Gabriel LaBelle playing Lorne Michaels. Super pumped! With his past connections to SNL, he'll do a great job. What do you think Chris?
As interesting to me as Life, except you don't have a Gyllehnaall overplaying like he's sitting on nails. I fell asleep during Life... and was glad it was over after the very predictable ending. For claustrophobic "fun", I recommend 2020's Underwater since it was so underrated in my opinion. For paranoia, nothing comes enven close to John Carpenter's : The Thing. For fair reviews, I get Stuckmannized!
I watched this last night. I had a good time. I enjoyed the tension throughout. I’m not one of those people who needs to connect with the main actor. I can go to a movie and watch everything unfold with absolutely no expectations. I didn’t mind the main character being a bit of an emotional recluse. She was actively keeping everyone away and I was totally okay with that. My only complain is that they weren’t consistent with special effects and makeup in that one violent scene. And that it needed to elevate the suspense from the already established status quo. I felt like it needed a little more umph in the end. Other than that it was a very decent movie and it didn’t totally play out like I thought it would. So the movie managed to surprise me here and there.

Astronauts are some of the most professional people on earth (pun intended), so the chances for this happening are slim to none. Still going to give it a try.
Saw it last night. It was OK, I only saw it because I see movies every week without watching trailers, just pick up key words. I love space and end of the world type movies so this was my pick this week. I was a bit bored. And yes, it was very hard to connect with the main character. I felt like she was spark notes on what they wanted her to be like before they put in other details lol. Anyhoo, it was okay. I wouldn't see it again.
You'll get a pass on the issssssssssss, I will personally never stop calling The VVitch "The ViVitch" (and I don't care if it's period correct or not!) Or RE7 as "Resident Evii: Biohazard" per the logo. Or RE8 as "Resident Evil: Viiiage" per the logo.
I don’t know how anyone came into this month being uncertain about whether this movie would be good or not. Obviously it would be enjoyable - some things you just gotta know!
I didn't see the movie, but from these images, the floaty cameraworks could help selling zero G when the production wasn't allowed to have actors on wires. i think its a clever strategy, but might also be tiering to watch the whole movie. I remember Gravity's camerawork was much more stable, but they most likely had a much bigger budget, and it mostly had just one actor on screen, so its easier to build a splecial effects shot, when there's only one 'moving part'.
3:23 - Actor here- usually when a film is made this way its because its "nameless/silent hero" ; so the effect of you putting yourself in this characters place. its like you have no backstory on her, so it doesnt cloud your mind- you think "if I were in their position..." and the movie gets more inclusive
Just finished watching the movie, and I am actually curious about how this alternate Earth would be after nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia. Especially with the upcoming nuclear winter.
The thing directors always forget about when filming zero gravity is the hair. The hair on the actors stays flat on their heads when in real zero-G it is floating too. I'd rather they just not do it at all and invent some plot device where there is gravity.
Just saw it, it wasn't that bad. It was never explained why Russia or the US saw the international space station as a priority as the world burned. It doesn't have weapons and if you take some up you can just put them on a small platform made for said weapons. In a war between the US and Russia I just don't see this happening.
I enjoyed the movie like 3.5-4/5 stars but the reviews pissed me off. For example, one is complaining about the fact that the lead is a black gay woman, another was that the inside of the ISS was too "realistic" and not interesting enough, another was that astronauts would never kill each other. Like the complaints felt dumb and yours are valid just I feel that this movie is getting trashed by some reviewers for no reason (again, not referencing you just people on Google.)
