I only have one Sailor pen, the Dragon Palace. I had to tune this MF nib. I also owned a Sailor Pro Gear with a 21K Medium nib that I didn't love because it felt fragile to me, and ended up selling it. While I love the simple design, and some of the colors of the Sailor pens, I don't see myself needing any more Sailors. There sure seems to be a following for these pens, but they can be a bit pricey and I am not convinced they are worth the price.

Marie, I am with you on everything you said. Have a feeling this one might be my only Sailor. Funny how certain pen brands catch your eye and your heart and others just don't feel "right" enough to keep getting multiples of their pens.

I have 12 Sailor pens with gold nibs and 2 with steel nibs in my collection. At first I was like you, I didn’t like the feedback at all, but I have come to enjoy it over time. Sailors are different from Pilot and Platinum pens and all the other brands out there and that‘s actually what makes them special to me. So they do deserve a place in my collection. Because I don’t only enjoy one type of writing experience… it‘s the diversity that brings me joy. I have fine, medium fine, medium and broad Sailor nibs and even one music nib. 2 Pro Gears, 2 Sailor 1911 (one standard, one large), 8 Pro Gear Slims. I have never found a pen too thin or to small or too girthy or too large to write with it… sometimes I‘m in the mood for a big pen, sometimes I want to write with a small pen… sometimes I pick up my Scribo Feel and sometimes it’s my Kaweco Liliput. That‘s part of the fun for me in this hobby. 😊 Oh, and I have a Sailor King of Pen on preorder… really looking forward to testing that one out… 😊

Whoa! You are a big fan of their pens with 12….and counting 😉. I’m beginning to think that Sailor pens are an either you really, really, really like them or you’re okay with giving them a miss. I will keep writing with this one until the Pen Fair and make up my mind then if I’m keeping it, just having a PG or maybe not any in my collection. I’m with you on that diff writing experiences tho, across my pen collection. I love my almost & fully flex nibs; Mediums (and certain F nibs) are my go to for regular journaling; Stubs are for when I want to have flair with my writing. Think I only had 1 Broad that I got ground to a Cursive Smooth Italic recently. THAT one I totally love. Thanks Heide for commenting. I do love how you’re enjoying your small but mighty herd of Sailor pens. 😊

I have 2 PGS and one PG the slims are a bit small but I love the way they write. I would say you would prefer the M or B as the feedback is reduced on those compared to the MF. I prefer the size of the PG but it too is a shy all and I am unwilling to spend the $$$ for a king of Pens. I might try a 1911 L but not sure. I really love Platinum pens and nibs so Sailor is not a super high priority for me they rank #3 in the three Japanese pen brands for me. Amazon has had some good pricing on sailors though which is how I got my pro gear.

Same for me with pen ranking for Sailor pens, never been high priority but def curious about them. I am glad I got this one but might be on the never-again train for adding lots to my collection.

I don’t have a Sailor Pro Gear but I am always drawn to the milky look of most of their colors. I like the feed back sound. I will be going to the St. Louis pen show in June and I’m considering purchasing a Pro Gear.

Hey Grace! That feedback I'm hearing sounds normal for Sailor, but it's a bit faint in comparison to the rest of the sounds in the video, so I can't pinpoint precisely that it's just the feedback. Medium Fines are definitely toothy and thinner so their feedback is just that much louder if you press down harder than usual with fountain pens (like I do). But the way the lines wrote - it looked SUPER SMOOTH to me xD Very lovely Sailor addition to your collection! I no longer buy Sailor PG Slims because they cause hand cramps and are too small, therefore, the Jinhao 82s would never attract me either haha!
@wildlyimaginable
@wildlyimaginable 2 месяца назад
Hey Lao, thanks for sharing that info about Sailor pens with me, especially that MF nibs are toothier and thinner. Makes sense for the feedback I’m hearing. I’m still so new to all the nuances of this pen brand. Someone suggested tuning the tines a bit. Need to do my regular boatload of research before I tackle that tho. 😆 I’m no fan of hand cramping but it’s weird because I still enjoy writing longer sessions with my 82s. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I recently purchased a Sailor PGS Shikiori as well. I got the dragon palace model, which is a beautiful muted pastel green. I absolutely love it. The feedback took some getting used to, but I do think I'd be in the market for other PGS in the future after this experience.
@wildlyimaginable

And that’s what I don’t want to do, have to get used to the feedback on the pen. If that the case I’d rather give it up entirely to someone who will more thoroughly enjoy the pen as is. We’ll see.

Me too, haven’t ordered a pen in weeks. The Sailor came in 3 weeks ago but never had a chance to unbox it till now. Oh wait. I lie….i forget that I put a new Jinhao style pen in my cart instead of in my waiting-to-see-if-I-really-need-it Pen Wish List and was surprised when it showed up in an order for something else I placed on Amazon. So I’m not counting that as an “I ordered”, at least not knowingly. 🤣😆🤣

Ahh Sailor it’s either a love or hate with the feedback those nibs provide. I have 7 and find anything M and above to have less of that tactile feedback than the rest. I’ve yet to try their broad but maybe for my next one I’ll give that a go. The EF is surprisingly fine and feedback is heavy given the territory. MF is my sweet spot but I do love the M’s too for the wetness and less feedback they provide for journaling. I will say though if you like the chunkier grip you will enjoy the Sailor PRO gear. As much as I love the pretty colors that sailor puts out in the slim version I much prefer the pro gear model for its weight, girth, and the 21K nib.
@wildlyimaginable
@wildlyimaginable 2 месяца назад
I have a feeling you’ll be right about the Pro Gear being the Sailor pen I will prefer holding. Because I’m not interested in having a varied of colours per se in the Sailor pen brand I know I can satisfy colour variety of this kind with my Jinhaos (which I love writing with!). Already thinking will only have 1 Sailor in my collection and it prolly won’t be the one I just unboxed in this video. 😂

I do like Sailor pens and have 11 in a 12-pen case. Fortunately, I started collecting some years ago and I haven't had to buy a Sailor at their current outrageous prices. The one I never reach for is a Pro Gear Slim -- I find them just small enough to be uncomfortable (which is odd, because I do like other small and slim pens such as the Pelikan M200). I also don't like the MF nib. Although I do like some feedback, the wider nib widths are less scratchy, and my favorite Sailor nibs are broad, medium, and music. It's worth noting that the regular Pro Gear is not a large pen either. Sailor seems to put out the most lovely colors in the Slim model, and often the MF nib is the broadest you can get, so swearing off both has saved me a lot of money! It sounds like you'll have access to a Sailor event, which is a great way to learn more.

Def looking forward to the Sailor Pen Fair. Think that will be the deciding factor on whether I become a more-than-one Sailor pen fan or not. I’m erring on the side of one and done. Ha! The Music nib is what I’m favoring already if I indulge in a PG. I’ll consider fine tuning the nib on this one if I keep it or putting on my “to-sell” list. I didn’t realize that Sailor pens were not always as expensive as they are now. Just goes to show how the market (aka its popularity) dictates the jump up in pricing. I’m okay not to ride the bandwagon on them

i have 2 sailors, a pro gear slim and a pro gear. i have small hands so actually prefer the smaller pro gear slim in size but the nib on my pro gear is smoother and bouncier since its 21k. i enjoy them quite a lot personally but i def understand the preference to smooth over the feedback! i had a compass 1911 once and found the feedback to be way too much at the time, i wonder if my opinion would change now? congrats on the new pen and thank you for being so honest! i love hearing how different peoples opinions can be on one subject :)

I felt the same way when I got my Pro Gear Slim. Toooo much feedback. Mine was a medium. After a few weeks of using it, I took micromesh and Mylar to it and I took just a little of the tooth off. I wanted a little feedback because I primarily use Tomoe River paper, which some Pilot pens are too smooth for and my handwriting is terrible if it’s too smooth. So now my Pro Gear Slim Medium is perfect and I love it. Now I did buy a Slim Mini in MF nib. Loved the nib didn’t need any smoothing. The feedback is perfect. The pen is too small for extended writing. Nice pocket pen, though. I got a full size Pro Gear after that and I love it. The nib is different because it’s 21K. It has perfect feedback and more bounce than the stiff 14K nib. The pen is almost too girthy for me, and when posted, is a little heavy, but not bad. I do love it. I think you would like it, but might be best if you can try one at a pen show before forking out the money. I know I have more Sailors in my future. The feedback plus Tomoe River paper, is perfect for me. As long as the nib isn’t toooo much feedback and I have hear the Pro Gear Slim has more feedback than Slim Mini or ProbGear. Though you can also get PGS with 21K nib at a premium cost.
@wildlyimaginable
@wildlyimaginable 2 месяца назад
I’m so glad you said that. My theory is I will prolly like the Pro Gear better and perfect timing for my local shop’s Sailor Fair coming up to try it out. Also might try using the micro mesh on the Slim, see if it improves things. Now that I have a better idea of what size pens I enjoy writing with I realize how small the PGSlim pen is. And I have heard that the diff between the 14k and the 21k is noticeable but usually it’s just a smidge out of my price range at the time of a purchase. Thanks, Andrea, for your suggestions! 🥰

@@wildlyimaginable I would caution against doing any tuning of your own on the nib if you think you might be selling the pen. If you do, you'll have to disclose that. My guess is that many people won't want to buy a Sailor nib that has been altered by a non-professional. Might be a fun project if you're willing to keep the pen or sell it at a discount.

OOOOH Grace, I am with you and have lots of feels on this! I picked up my only Sailor (a 1911S) from Endless at deep discount; I like it OK, it's a MF 14K and the feedback is kind of pleasant. But it is so small!!! Just not comfortable for me, and unless I try a full-sized Pro Gear and love it, I'm probably one-and-done with Sailor. The barrier there is the price -- at over $300, and closer to $400 for special editions full size PG - OUCH. I can appreciate how people love them, but I've been acquiring a taste for more maker-type pens, and I'm sure some people would be horrified to pay as much as I do for a steel nib pen. ARen't we having fun? Anyway, I always enjoy when you break on of your "nevers", as I'm over here doing the same thing, right along with you. 🤩

This journey is definitely all about the fun…for me at least, and you it seems like. So breaking, then reaffirming my “nevah!” pen rule-that’s-not-a-rule (😆) is how I roll. 😄 So unless I fall in love with a PG pen at the Sailor Pen Fair, it might be one and done for me as well.
