I have never seen a single second of any NieR game before watching this opening movie. It was very eye opening to say the least! The character design and music really caught my attention during this! Looks story driven as well, which I love!

Nier music is next level. As others have pointed out, the language of the songs is "Chaos language" which is intended to sound like a language but not have any meaning (or rather the meaning is meant to be left up to interpretation) so there's no translation of it. It allows the vocals to act as an instrument and let the music itself carry the meaning rather than the words. If I were to sum up the Nier series, it'd be depression with a glimmer of hope. They are by and large very tragic stories in a very powerful way.

The music in Nier isn't just "chaos language", it's different languages based on a linguists' idea of what German, Hungarian, Welsh, Japanese, French, and Latin might have evolved to over a very long period of time.

@@Null_Experis That's what the singer Emi Evans calls it. From an interview: "I am probably best known for my vocals on Dark Souls and especially on NieR: Automata where I sing in my ”chaos language”- mysterious made up futuristic languages based on real existing ones. " You are correct, but the the term used by the creator is "chaos language"

The Nier games (Replicant and Automata) are truly a trip to get through. Their director, Yoko Taro, is known for his unique style of storytelling, really focusing in on the human aspects and character interactions in desolate or bleak worlds. His earlier series, Drakengard, is also worth a look at, especially the first one. They aren't the most enjoyable things to play now but the writing within has some real teeth. Suggest looking up a story summary or detailing if you're interested.

Oh boy, NieR stuff hahahaha I grew up on Drakengard as a kid which was a wild ride. And then played that series and NieR when it came out and then it was wild to see it all get really popular with Automata As for the language, it's called the Chaos langauge, and it was made up for this series. I personally like the Gestalt version intro more. Also, as a heads up, this is a remake/remaster of NieR for the PS3 and 360 which came out in 2010. It has a little bit of extra content too, which I haven't experIenced yet since I haven't beaten this particular version. This is a very, very weird series. It's really good for that, but there's definitely a lot of oddities. There's 5 main games so far. Drakengard, Drakengard 2, Drakengard 3, NieR, and NieR Automata. Drakengard 1 and 2 were on PS2. Drakengard 3 was on PS3. They're not very good games to play, as much as I love them, but the plots are interesting. I'd suggest probably looking up plot synopses or something rather than playing them first hand. Drakengard 1 had 5 endings. Drakengard 2 takes place after the first ending (sort of), and NieR takes place after the fifth ending. So NieR is an alternate timeline from Drakengard 2. Drakengard 3 is a prequel to the whole series. NieR Automata is a sequel to NieR, and NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139... is, as mentioned, a remake/remaster of NieR. NieR on PS3 and 360 has a weird quirk where in Japan, they got two versions of the game. NieR Gestalt on Xbox 360, and NieR Replicant on PS3. In Gestalt, the main protagonist Nier is an older man, and Yonah is his daughter. In Replicant, Nier is a young man and Yonah is his little sister. In the western localization, we just got one version called "Nier" which was NieR Gestalt, the papa Nier game, on both PS3 and 360. I actually like this version more because I find more of an emotional connection to a father looking after his daughter than a brother looking after his sister. Also Jamieson Price did a wonderful role voicing him in this game. NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139... is exclusively the Brother Nier version of the game, and the first time this was localized in the west.

Drakengaard as a child? oO I was traumatized enough when I watched Watership Down at a young age.... I don't even want to imagine what Drakengaard 1 would have done to me, back then, unless you mean teenage years.

Playing Drakengard 1 back during the PS2 days such fond yet traumatising childhood memories strangely though I would always go back for more.

You must have missed it, this takes place 1400 years after the events of a certain ending of a game called Drakkengard (or Dragon-on Dragoon). It takes place on Earth. This game series is....dark.

The Nier games are great, if you don't mind being thrown into the depth of despair every now and then and put through the occasional existencial crisis, questioning what it means to be Human and the nature of the soul and the likes. Then again... FF14 has quite a bit of that in the later expansions too... hmmm.... The "language" of the song is the so called Chaos Language. It isn't a language in the actual sense of the word, but a collection of kind of pseudo-words I guess you could call it, taken from a dozen or more real-world languages. They hold no meaning themselves, and are only meant to sound good for songs. Nier is a spinn-off of the Drakengaard (or Dragon-on Dragoon in the original Japanese versions) series, but as far as I know Drakengaard 1 had horrible gameplay, Drakengaard 2 a story and feeling that makes it pretty difficult to see it as part of the series and Drakengaard 3 was so poorly optimized, at times the FPS drop below 10... and all three are console exclusive. Nier meanwhile has considerably better gameplay and PC adaptations. In terms of music, the first Drakengaard has mostly a colleciton of soundscapes that make you feel uncomfortable, I have no clue about the Drakengaard 2 music, but Drakengaard 3 has a fantastic soundtrack, almost as good as those of Nier and Nier:Automata. In terms of which Nier is which: Nier: Replicant and Nier:Gestalt are essentially the same game, except that one is for the playstation with a child protagonist, who's the brother of Yohna, while the other is the X-Box version, where the protagonist is an adult, who's the father of Yohna. Otherwise the games are the same. And the bafflingly named "NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139" is a remake of the original game with improved graphics, audio, some additional content and overhauled (and much more fun) gameplay, and a PC port. Nier:Automata is a seperate game and a kind of sequel to the other Niers. I say kind of, because while Automata takes place in the same world, the connection with the first game is very light and you don't have to have played the first one to understand and enjoy Automata. There are some nice references and nostalgia moments, but it does absolutely stand on it's own as a stand-alone game. Interestingly enough in the Shadowbringers expansion of FF14, there is a series of quests and raids that's a cross-over with Nier: Automata. And it has some really fantastic mash-ups of OST tracks of both games.
