It reminds me more of C418's "One" album, rather than his Minecraft songs. He uses a kalimba-ish/xylophone-ish instrument all throughout it, it's really pretty.
Korg is like what android used to be 20 years ago. Experimental but inviting and intentionally left unfinished, a master class of community engagement.
I started doing all my production on iPad.. still on the og iPad Pro and Gadget works perfectly, now it's Au3 all the way I can use so many other iOS apps with it but the core Gadgets are really nice.
It's like if a kalimba and a synth had a baby - love it! For anyone interested you can also look up the earlier iteration of this instrument, it was shown as a much more raw prototype last year at superbooth '23 (there's a nice video of Tats explaining in detail the technology and science behind all the overtones - he seems like such a smart and creative dude!). It's really interesting to see how this has progressed comparing these two videos, so I'm looking forward to when they finally have a working production model and I can grab my own. In the meantime I'll grab this samplepack, thanks David! :)
I recently recorded a cover of Radioheads “no surprises”. And I used this Korg Prototype sample that you released for us before this video even came out. I’ll see if I have time to record a video and I’ll share it with you. This Korg sample sounds great! Thank you David!
I also wanted to add, that many of these sounds can be found, rather naturally within the wide variety of Indonesian Gamelan music, particularly here, in an instrument which comes in a variety of octaves (sets of 6 drums each, called a Bonang. Very pleasing.
Yes the sounds it makes are very gamelanesque, and also a little like prepared piano, but I feel like the basic idea could be applied to differently shaped tines that would produce other styles of sound too, imagine using springs for instance
What a fascinating instrument!! Long-time (ish) watcher but first-time commenter-I keep meaning to say that I absolutely adore how relaxed your videos are. I love getting to take little musical journeys with such a passionate & chill guide :-)
Ive been fascinated with this instrument since I saw a video last year from SB '03 that went over it in some detail. I'm super excited they are planning to bring this to market.
The intro BGM is nice. I like it. Thank for uploading the samples. What a pleasant surprise. Since I found out this instrument, Ive been a huge fan waiting for its release.
I'm very little of a musician, but I'm very passionate about instruments. I would feel like heaven on an outside festival like this. Birds and synths. ❤ Thanks for the sample, David!
That’s what I really like about my city in the summertime, innovative music in nature right at the heart of the town in a chill atmosphere. Greetings from Berlin!
I’ve been listening to French 79 a lot lately and it’s been fun to pick out pieces of gear he uses. I’m fairly certain he loves the microcosm as much as you do. Thanks!
Ich liebe deine nie endende Neugier und Großzügigkeit = I love your never-ending curiosity and generosity. Thanks for yet another free sample instrument. It's really decent of you.
Tats is great, I love watching him talk about instruments and music technology, his mind always seems so open to exploration, and you can almost feel the creative ideas bouncing out of him. He's truly inspirational.
As always, thank you so much for your videos! Wow, I have already tried this wonderful DS instrument once it was released and now you have finally shown how even better it is in real life! As a kalimba owner my first thought about placing stuff on the tines was "I wish they had placed a tremolo chain on it". If this is basically an auto-kalimba, then a chain should make some really crazy and fun sounds.
thank you for the free samples, it made me finally do something on Ableton everytime i did use the app i never end up exporting, but this time i made a small minimal ethereal beat thing out of the one with rain (edit it was pad dew drops 💧)in the title with lots of reverb and some delay
You've made me realise how versatile acoustic instruments are. People can find new ways of engaging with them for decades, while a lot of electronic instruments seem to be designed much more rigidly. I love the idea of this new Korg instrument, because its analogue elements make it a lot more versatile, without the designers needing to add any more features.
I really enjoyed having the chance to play this on the last day. It was a lot of fun. Looking forward to trying out your decent instrument. Thanks for sharing.
OK, this is super cool! I love that you can choose your own resonators. I also like the idea of 3D printing faceplates and stuff too. THANKS for making this into a plugin instrument!! I wonder if the birds liked the sound from the synths. They seemed pretty comfortable with humans around. LOL
You created music. You created samples. You gifted samples. You also created a wonderful video impression of the event. Love this video for its entertainment value and the inspiration it gave!
Looks a damn sight warmer there than it is here. It's late Autumn here. Recently I went out to do some filming for a recent video project, and the frost was unreal.
@@DavidHilowitzMusic Hey David, so, I got a question, I’m 15, and Recently, I’ve had figured out the Optigan, and I thought it was a really cool instrument! I was wondering if you can help me make something a tad bit similar? While I don’t have a money (as of now) I was thinking if you could help me with with the electronic/coding of he electronic chord organ instrument!, I was thinking about me 3d printing this instrument and mailing it to you so you can work on the electronic wacky stuff, I also have an calculator you can use to work on the screen so I can access the settings n stuff! I guess reusing the calculator into something new! If you want to help, please, reply! Or just reply no, it’s your decision,
Reminds me of John Cage's songs for "prepared piano", wherein the piano has pieces of metal and rubber placed in between the strings at specific locations.
This might be really good for synthy jazzy stuff. There's an instrument called the Hang, which is used extensively by a band I really enjoy, Portico Quartet. This has a somewhat similar sound to that, only more synthy and with less resonance. Will surely try it out later. Thanks for another great instrument, David! Edit: after trying it out my suspicions were correct. The middle of this instrument's range very much sounds like a crystal clear Hang drum! Great for jazz, and better yet it's completely free!
Hey David! So cool to know you were in Berlin! If you're coming again next year, I would be more than happy to host you in our guest room - we live quite central and I can make decent coffee! :)
I love how this sounds, and I really don’t understand why so many people here and elsewhere are putting it down. It’s such a work of creativity and love from one of the synth geniuses of our time.
I could hear this in music you might hear in a spa or something like that, maybe mixed with a soft pad, possibly one from the Wavestation and/or subtle nature sounds like birds and a soft babbling brook.
As a retired engineer I’ve long recognized that Roland is run by engineers who happen to play music while Korg is run by musicians who happen to be engineers. This is a vast simplification but it makes the point: I would have been absolutely gobsmacked if Roland had produced this, but Korg? I can only smile. That’s my Korg, nice job guys and gals. Btw David, not sure of your ambitions, if you’re more liable to open a Tindie storefront or enter into a partnership with a music gear manufacturer, but many of your videos could be classified as Delightful Instruments, which perhaps could be flashed onto a Pi or packaged as a 1010 Black/Blue/etc. box. Think of it, a new Omnichord or Vocaloid or even this Korg venture. Hilowitz Instruments! In a box, with knobs and a screen 😎
Video turned out great Dave, nice recap of the week and nice showcase of the prototype. Wish there was a forest of gear to check out every week, but I guess pawn shops will have to do until next year 😅😂
The Zoom H4N is one amazing beast. Mine currently is acting as an audio interface on the laptop I record my weekly radio show on. Such a versatile device!
I would love a tutorial about how to turn audio recordings into a decent sampler library. I have an old Electone I’d like to turn into a sample library for fun.
Are you at all familiar with the instruments created by Andy Thurlow for his Anarchestra? Some sounds of these new Korg devices remind me of Andy's absolutely wonderful stuff!
I love it. Like being able to mess with a Rhodes, or Whirly, while playing it, but scaled down to just a handful of notes. I fear however, it's going to be really expensive, because Korg is taking a bit of a risk on this project.
I used to make kalimbas where it was easy to loosen 1 support bracket slightly, and then slide the tines forward and backwards to adjust the tuning, and then retighten the support bracket for best resonance. I'm hoping these are retunable, in a relatively easy way, too.
The mechanical / engineering process behind the synth is interesting, but what comes out of it in terms of sound can be easily replicated by physical modeling VSTs, such as Chromaphone. I wonder what type of really original sounds could be made out of it.
