I noticed a lot of seed heads as well in my new lawn. Even though I mow it at 5/8" to 3/4. They still hang around. Only brown in my lawn. Since I couldn't go any lower I found verticutting and/or grooming helped a lot. I've been doing it about every 2 weeks. I also think it helps with air flow to prevent fungus and the lawn from feeling sticky when it's hot and humid
Scalp anxiety is real. I scalped my back yard this spring, dethatched did some leveling and overseeding and for about 2 weeks it looked pretty rough but it looks great now.
Western NY I scalped my Rye grass lawn August 13th, 85 degrees, then I fed it Milorganite. We got drenching rain every day leftover hurricane and in 5 days my lawn is looking fairway quality again
Mid Atlantic area has been crazy this year. During a wet Spring and early June had thick, lush fescue mowing every 3-4 days. Now it’s been very hot and dry, my last mow was 4 weeks ago and much of my lawn is dormant. It’s been at least 5 years since my lawn has browned in the summer. At least the pre-emergent I put down has kept the weeds at bay.
I think you just explained what those brown stems are in my lawn. I have mostly green but there are some areas where I have patches of stiff, tan stems among the green. Thanks for the video.
Thinking about doing a total renovation and going straight perennial rye in my cool season lawn. I’m just obsessed with the color and I currently have a test plot that is doing really well but imo it’s a bit more maintenance than whatever mix I have in the lawn now but I think it’s worth it.
I've started doing this every year after the May funk starts to wear off. A verticut to open the canopy up and get rid of some of the old tissue. Of course i learned these techniques from years of watching ryan.
First Aussie 🧐. Ryan , another great explanation video. You definitely like a challenge in some of the things that you do . Enjoying your videos mate . 😎
What's your recommendation for seed in Southern Delaware (7B) in a lawn that gets half full sun, and half shade due to tree canopy? Some of the yard will be exposed to sun all day, while other areas are shaded out.
He works a day job and runs a garbage business on the side. When he gets home from work he does dumpster runs. In the last couple years the business has taken off for him. Has been difficult for him to make videos with the limited time. Last year he also messed his shoulder up bad so probably not ideal for making videos too.
It looks GREAT. Mine is a light green in color and my two neighbors have a beautiful dark green lawn. Should I be applying something during this summer season ?
Thanks for sharing i was thinking of doing a dethatch and possible verdicut on my lawn. But was sure do the high heat we been experiencing thank for th continued content
I put down a bag of Scotts sun and shade this year not knowing it was a mixture of Bermuda, fescue, and rye. I have clumps of Bermuda now and I didn’t want that. Am I screwed?
Hello Ryan, I seem to be experiencing same phenomenon here in Denver on my plot of 100% rye. Could the browning also be due to excessive thickening or thatch building up? My area is now in third season. Time for scarifier ? Or scalp?
Question... Is your property limited to the narrow strip that your house sits on and what's in front of it or do you also own the side parcels with the trees and hills??? I know you showed an overview when you first bought it but I can't remember the layout!?!?
Ryan, do you scalp it at once or gradually lower the mow heigh according to the 1/3 rule? Also, my mix KBG/PR lawn is typically mowed to 2.5 inch, how low should I scalp it? Thanks.
I don’t get it- you said you did the seeding in late September of last year, did that give the grass enough time to germinate and develop solid roots for winter? I’m torn between starting my aeration / overseed last week of August (to give new grass more time to mature before winter) or wait until highs are mid 70s… which can be as late as mid to late September. In MN, We will probably have frost by mid Oct. what’s the secret with this timing?
If you have water I start in August when I can. This was late due to just not having enough time to get everything done and I was waiting for the drought to end but it never did so I had to water basically by hand to get it going
Would this process work with TTTF as well? I did a partial renovation last fall and had lots of seed heads and stalks in late spring. Lots of browning in the yard now despite sufficient watering.
Meanwhile my fescue with prolonged 100-110 degrees, aka the last 3 weeks and projected future and no rain this year at all. Tall fescue is STRUGGLING, yes I’m watering but got blue grass mixed in unfortunately, and it doesn’t like it without an insane amount of water
@@ryanknorrlawncare I wish it was sometimes 😂 I’m just gonna have to do a reno this fall or spring, I’m on a good slope about 8-10° so I know that’s not helping and direct sunlight for pretty much the entire day, it don’t like it at all
My back yard is 100% RK PRG. I keep having areas that turn brown and pull up easy. Can’t see any grubs or insects. I think it might be shallow roots and then dying from the heat. But I water enough. Any thoughts?
I had similar issues due to soil compaction. Was watering plenty but the soil was mostly repelling the water and it was just running off. Core aeration is ideal, but difficult in the summer in some areas. Check your soil 'hardness' with a depth probe (a long phillips-head screwdriver or an actual soil core probe). If the probe doesn't go in easily you have a compaction problem. Soil looseners like Ryans (or just baby shampoo at a rate of about 4oz per thousand) can help, but you may have to ride it out until fall when you can do a proper core aeration.
Appreciate it. That’s what I suspected. I have a handheld core aerator from HD. I know a few spots it’s rock hard like 3” down. Other areas that have browned up the aerator goes in all the way. 🤷♂️ I have Air8 and plan on hiring a core aerator in fall. Until then I’m just hand aerating and watering plus applying Air8. I hit a rock on one spot that’s like 2.5” down. Not sure how I missed this when renovating. 😒🤦♂️
What don't you like about your Turf type tall fescue? I have a 50/50 Kentucky Blue / perennial ryegrass lawn that I'm thinking about overseeding with tttf next month.
@@blaiseducdaumont1280 for me, its not the darkest green (more of a emerald green super turf II) I have a different type of TTTF in my backyard that gets dark (SnapBack) and I want to mow low and was considering going this route. But Rye seems to be the darkest next to KBG and gives me the option to mow as low as I want, so I’m going to experiment with Rye this time around.
I have basically mix of everything in my lawn but its mostly tttf. Cuz thats what i use. To. Seed every year but i have a little spot of rye i think is just always like a brown stem with a little green on top im guessing its p rye but idk. Do you know if this is a characteristic of rye or another grass. I mow 3-4 inches all year. Its literally a 3 .5 in brown stem with like .5 inch of green on top. All the time
Hi Ryan! I am in Buford Georgia and it is hot hot and dry what type of grass do you recommend in an all shady area on the side of my house? Any ideas? My whole lawn is absolutely beautiful except the shady area along the side of my house! Thank you!!
