Description of how I prepared for the FAA written for PPL.
Ground School:
-Checkride Prep
Books:
-Rod Machado Pilot Handbook
-FAA Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
-Airman Knowledge Testing Supplement - Sport Pilot, Recreational Pilot, and Private Pilot
-Gleim Pilot Handbook
Electronic Material:
-Gleim FAA Test Prep Online
-Flightready Private Pilot app (IOS)
Gear:
-ASA Plotter
-ASA Metal E6B
-ASA CX-3 E6B
Oops! Didn't meant to say Ralph instead of Rod. Please excuse me. I corrected myself in the video, but again, so sorry for that. Rod Machado is awesome, and I meant no disrespect.
Clarification on "free": I said I didn't receive anything free but then went on to say that ground school was free. To be clear: it was free for everybody, not just me. I did not receive any financial incentives for the products I used.

Thanks for the study tips . I watched the Checkride prep live ground school. Awesome class. I’ve learned alot from that ground school. I purchased sporty. Ground school testing prep. I also downloaded the others ground school you mentioned. I’m using the free version. I have all the tools you have as well. I feel like I’m learning but FAA questions could be tricky. My confidence is coming along . Hopefully in 3 weeks I will be ready. Thanks again for the study tips

Outstanding content and presentation. Thank you. I'm just beginning this process, and was curious to know how long it took from when you started prepping for the exam to when you took it/completed it? Also, were you flying more or prepping/studying for the exams more in your process?
@IvanSkyFlight
@IvanSkyFlight 2 года назад
I was flying and prepping at the same time. I did a ground school which took me a total of about 4 weeks, but I really retained very little. There is so much information, but after getting my letter from the ground school which lets you sign up for the exam I gave myself about 3 weeks. During that time I was ALWAYS studying. Like I said in the video, I studied up until I walked into the building. I was either reading my books, running through questions on my computer, or or answering questions on my phone. Having that shorter deadline really helped to motivate me.

Thank you, thank you so much for sharing your information and making this VERY informative video! I do have a question. I am currently studying for the written test and was wondering how FlightReady compared to Gleim in terms of the questions you saw on the written? I only ask because some of the questions on FlightReady are worded completely different and some I have not seen before compared to Gleim? I have also been using Kings, Sporty's, and Dauntless Aviation test preps so far and FlightReady is the only one so far that has questions worded completely different. Also, I agree with you on the CX-3. It is amazing and I have one too. Makes E6B questions a million times more manageable.
@IvanSkyFlight
@IvanSkyFlight 2 года назад
I found the Gleim questions to be pretty similar. For me the Flight Ready stuff was more about quickly answering questions when I could pull my phone out and here and there.

@IvanSkyFlight

I don't know about a specific book. The video discusses what I used. Having said that, the material in different vendors' books are probably very similar and entirely useable by most people.

@IvanSky How many questions were kinda similar to Gleim online study guide? How many were different in terms of question complexity?
@IvanSkyFlight
@IvanSkyFlight 3 года назад
Pretty much all of my actual FAA test questions were similar in terms of wording and complexity.

The disappointing thing is that when you get that piece of paper from the FAA, it doesn’t mention your score at all. So the score you get is really more of a morale booster.
@caribbaviator7058
@caribbaviator7058 Год назад
Exactly. Mine wasn't that high but my biggest worry now is the oral and checkride!
@seekunderstanding4280
@seekunderstanding4280 Год назад
Exactly....the score will not tell if you can actually fly an airplane or not, not will it tell if your a safe pilot or not.

Don’t use ASA Test prep. Horrible. Although I was scoring 93% on the practice test, I only scored a 77 on the FAA written. Now I have to spend another $175 to retake the FAA exam because I refuse to accept that score. Thanks for the info on what you used for a study guide, I will be checking it out to retake the test again.

@iceshantyprostitutedragon6627
good job Ivan, may I ask you how did your check-ride interview go? I understand the examiner will grill you on the questions you miss.
@IvanSkyFlight
@IvanSkyFlight Год назад
Thanks! My oral exam went very well. In theory your instructor has access to what you missed and should help you prepare for that. Your DPE will also have access to that and is supposed to cover some of that in the oral. The downside for getting 100 is that you don't know what you are going to get asked. For my oral, I went back and reviewed like I was going to take the written again. I also spent more time in the FAR/AIM. It's important to know where the information is. It's okay to not know everything, but you at least need to have a plan for looking stuff up.

Which ASA plotter did you use or recommend? The fixed version or the rotating version? Keith
@IvanSkyFlight

Rotating. It just seemed easier to use. My CFI used a fixed one for after flight debriefings. It's not night and day, thought.

I think they all have roughly the same data. Having said that, everyone has a different learning style, so some products may work better than others depending on the person.

So you need to do ground school to take your exam? I've just been studying reading the handouts on my own
@UltimateAnarchy
@UltimateAnarchy 2 года назад
There's just SO much data to take in that you'll spend way more time doing it that way. Ground school is structured. To assume you can do a better job reading some handouts and still retain enough knowledge to pass is naive.

have any idea where to get the ASA e6b calculator, can't find it online anywhere
@IvanSkyFlight
@IvanSkyFlight Год назад
From what I am hearing it's just not available right now. I just did an eBay search and couldn't find one. My best advice would be to get the Sporty's version. Since this video was posted I did pick one up, and while I do prefer the ASA version, the Sporty's version is still way easier and quicker than the mechanical E6B, at least for me. Others may disagree. In any case, good luck!
